monsitj, SheepFactory, Elendil le Grand, sylpaco thanx guys !!

sylpaco :merci a toi, chuis impatient de voir cette image aussi :D

Here is my first idea for the journey...

**None of those 2 ideas are the choosen one, go directly to post 29

"Gino wants to drink"

Gino is a real clown in his tribute, he's always so drunk and crazy in his mind, Gino is a pure stupid guy, little, fat, always smiling (and he got only 2 teeth...)... One night, Gino leaves the village and go sing in the forest with some bottles in his pocket, he finally fall asleep some hours before sun rise after having made all sort of funny things.... When Gino wake up, the sun is shing, the forest is all colored, Gino look around him...he's lost :( He begin to walk through the first little way he saw and a strange creature is coming behind him, this creature has a neutral expression but wonder's carrying bottles.....a very long journey begin :)

I imagined this story after drawing some characters, Gino and the creature, i imagine the scene on the way in a forest, we could see our 2 characters walking, The little fat guy is slooking at the creature and smiling, we could imagine he's talking to it...

2nd Idea :

"The 3 Little Brothers"

It's the story of 3 little babies (strange humanoid species...) found in a forest by a village master in the past, today kids have grown and the master discovered their origin and so where their parents are... A morning, the master announce to the kids they're gonna leave the village and finally meet their parents, the beast is waiting they go in some minutes....

It will not really be cartoon but a mix between cartoon, Miyazaki style and fantasy design

I have some sketch i must scan to make colors tests, i'll send them soon !

Hope you'll enjoy, critics and comments are welcome ! :)

03 March 2006, 02:42 AM (

Characters for the current idea...

03 March 2006, 06:47 AM
Knowing your style... that can works very good... I already imagine the scene... good

03 March 2006, 08:46 AM
haha ! I like the style

03 March 2006, 10:37 AM
Ahahaha , this concept is briliant !! I can't stop laughing on the face of that guy !! :scream:

cheers ,

03 March 2006, 10:49 AM
Lemog, Elendil,Zapan thanx for your comments guys ...

Thinking about the project and i may choose a different story for this one, don't know why but i have trouble imagining the scene and the compo with this 2 different characters...what do you think ?

I thought about another story with the same beast, maybe something more poetic :scream:...

The character i would choose for the 3 little kids would be in harmony with the beast, dunno yet if they will be on the beast or standing on the ground...

What do you think ?

03 March 2006, 11:57 AM
ma foi, du peu que j'ai reussi a lire, ça m'a l'air interressant ^^
reste a voir ce que ça va donner
keep the good work comme on dit^^

03 March 2006, 01:18 PM
Hi Seb - great start for your journey!
I like both stories - but I think Gino and the creature could come out absolutely crazy - much in your style :) Looking forward to see what you choose - have fun!

03 March 2006, 01:27 PM
A short head for Gino too...

03 March 2006, 02:01 PM (

Not really a composition test but a try at scene colors, trying to think about a composition now... c&c are welcomes

03 March 2006, 02:54 PM
oronox : merci mec, j'attend de voir la suite de ton projet aussi ;)

Gunilla : thanx girl, actually it's hard to think about a compo to make this idea of alcoolic relation clear, hope i could bring something better

Lemog : glad u like it, c'est pas encore tres clair dans ma tete mais ca avance :scream:

I though rapidly about a thing i could do to make the scene more clear, the idea would be to make the little man walking in direction of the beast (like a drunk man) with a arm trying to catch a bottle, the beast would be more far away, not paying attention to him... more coming soon

03 March 2006, 03:04 PM
Heyyy really intesresting concept here

I love the face of this character Muahahahahaah...

03 March 2006, 04:55 PM (

This comp test add another idea in the journey...the death of the character :)

03 March 2006, 05:22 PM
That would be more like the journey ends :D

Perhaps it could work if you make the gates to the land of the dead or something?

03 March 2006, 05:30 PM
Haha yes that's an awesome idea gunilla, yes in fact the journey begins with the death in front of him, but this death could be a travel... wanted to make a very dark color on the bottom like smoke and fog, will make it if i stay with this character :)

03 March 2006, 06:08 PM
Like Gunilla said... just a hint or sillhouette (of a gate) would be enough to make this image more exciting

03 March 2006, 10:03 PM (

Here's a third idea and i think i'm gonna stay with this one les gens :) Bored with the previous one, hard to find a composition that could work...but the beast in this one will be the same...No story for the moment just a sketch...

hope u like it

03 March 2006, 11:22 PM (

A mood test with different color light... c&c are welcome !

03 March 2006, 12:07 AM
Yup ..last one is better...i always liked "orange, fire like" colors...:)

03 March 2006, 10:52 AM
huh, don't think anything about the new idea...? Anyway i'll start soon a rapid 3d sketch to have a better idea of compo and then i'll go for modeling... cya

03 March 2006, 11:15 AM
Yep - really nice colors...good mood. ... but, but whatever happened to Gino the Drunk? Have you dropped him?

03 March 2006, 11:28 AM
Gunilla : euh... yes :bounce:... those last sketch are in fact what i first though about when i came in the challenge, i wanted to test something funny with Gino but unfortunately it doesn't work when i think about a compo....sorry for ppl who liked this idea, changed my mind suddenly but i most believe in this last image, works better for me

03 March 2006, 11:55 AM

yep, same goes for me... like the last one best. Looks a bit like a "dreamer`s journey" image. I`m curious about the story behind...

03 March 2006, 12:13 PM
I think with your last sketches you have a very interesting image and deep. I really like this! Bonne chance !

03 March 2006, 12:58 PM
hi! your last sketch says something about the theme of the competition.
enjoy and good luck

03 March 2006, 04:10 PM
Hey Sebastien , nice "revirement de situation" !
The last sketch is great , could be something really moody with lights and stuff ...
Keep it up ,

cheers ,

03 March 2006, 04:35 PM
Glad this last concept works better, wated to experiment something new, it's fun !

theuni : thx, i try to imagine the story along with the construction

jddog : hey man glad u like it, will do my best to make it works !

vfxluc : huh yeah sounds more epic maybe lol

Zapan : thx for your message man, i'm spying your works also, go go !

see below for more

03 March 2006, 04:38 PM (

A vertical compo test (without compsiiting)

03 March 2006, 04:42 PM (

Here is a quick test i made with photoshop to get something with more variations, what do you think ?

03 March 2006, 05:41 PM
it's a sweet atmosphere for the background..looking good, nice style with your concepts too :)

03 March 2006, 06:05 PM
How beautiful is that last test !

Totally love the mood ...

Keep up the great work , and thx for watching me :) !

cheers ,

Edit: I would be up for the panoramic framing

03 March 2006, 06:53 PM
I like the colors in that last one:)

Good luck!

03 March 2006, 08:17 PM
Hi Sebastien..better late than never! I know what you mean about composition in this comp.. little figures travelling to a big thing! anyway, my favourite is the vertical composition..really like the balance there, and colors a great. good luck!

03 March 2006, 08:38 PM (

Ideas and rough design of kind of characters mounting the beast...they are thieves in a little strange story yet sorry :)

03 March 2006, 08:49 PM
Hey thx for the replies ppl, glad u like the mood, i will try to play with lighting in this scene, build a little strange world as you saw in the concept :)

Stefan_Morrell : thx man, i keep an eye on your work also ;)

Zapan : merci ca fait plaisir stephane, j attend ta 3d !!

Vedic kings : thx man !

shakes : hehe yeah it's been a long time, i think compo will be horizontale...arf sorry man :D

Next steps will be modeling soon as i have many concepts but nothing in 3d yet :\

03 March 2006, 10:49 PM
I really like the compo on horizontal view, very cinematographic... love it

03 March 2006, 11:04 PM
Think this last concept has a lot of potential.
sketch with light/lampion looks good (mood)
be lurking here..

03 March 2006, 07:56 AM
Ah great , nice design on those thieves , you've a very cool personnal style !

Next steps will be modeling soon

Yay , :bounce:

cheers ,

03 March 2006, 06:47 PM
jddog : thanx man, glad u like this one also...more to come !

MichaelMotion : thanx man, more work is coming for this one, want it to be realistic but looks kind of puppet work...
Zapan : thanx man ! :bounce:

See below for updates ! btw, i'll post a short story of the scene these days, more to come, thanx

03 March 2006, 06:49 PM (

Here is the basic shape of the creature, his look is almst there but it miss many details like bags, skin etc.. suggestions are welcome !

03 March 2006, 07:02 PM
great monster so far- love the position of it's head.nice and beastly!

03 March 2006, 07:03 PM
interesting character :)

I will have to come back to see what else you do.

03 March 2006, 05:16 AM
Even if I find it much funny, his originality must do the difference... I really like his design Seb

03 March 2006, 09:28 AM
I love your modeling ...

The style is very pleasant :)

03 March 2006, 10:10 AM
Thanx guys, i will do my best on this piece, see below for new composition/idea with the same environement...

03 March 2006, 10:12 AM (

In this last composition, i changed my idea about characters (but i will keep only the little one from the 2 i drew before...)... I'm planning to make a bigger character in the same style (a sort of old master...)...

03 March 2006, 11:17 AM
ma foi tu a l'air de bien avancer, j'espere que le resultat sera a la hauteur de mes esperances x) ( meuh non, je te met pas la pression x) )

03 March 2006, 12:20 PM (

Here is some refinement i made quickly,i don't really want to create a unique story with this image but make it open for free interpretation...The characters are more explicit now i think (finally...after all this changes :D)... i think i will wrote a little paragraph for this image, a sort of monologue by the little character, about how he see this long journey he's gonna make with this old man, more coming soon !

03 March 2006, 02:41 PM
oronox : euh jme la met tout seul la pression je crois :scream:...mais cette fois c'est bon, je suis enfin fixé sur une idee !

03 March 2006, 03:01 PM
Great , that last compostion works really me think and those new characters totally crack me up , beautiful is your style !
And also great start on the beast , except I personaly would add a third fingers on legs ... just a thougt ..

Keep it up !

03 March 2006, 06:01 PM
those two will look funny together, I think!- I like the composition and lighting look. should be quite powerful.

03 March 2006, 06:54 PM
Count me in! Very cool sketches.

03 March 2006, 07:07 PM
Thanx guys, glad u like them, hope you'll like them more after this little story line...

Zapan : Merci mec, we thought about it at the same time, i added a 3rd finger in the last update and made the legs more stronger:)

Finally a little story about after all those little researches, first time i get inspiration from my images to get a story, f.... inverted mind :D

On The Road to Daera...

People from Faenoe have never seen the sun or any real day lighting, they live in a constant dark/blue night lighting, their lives have really become sad...
An old legend tell that the only real source of natural light is situated in a place named "Daera", the same legend tell that 600 years ago, an old master and his apprentice were to this place, driving old traveler creature, to catch natural light sources, we don't know anymore about them and what they became after this experience, but the legend tell the whole journey...

One day, a little kid in Faenoe discover the old book of Faenoe Legends in a library, he opens it and begin to read a part named "On The Road to Daera...", the kid love the story so much that he begin to dream...he begin to identify himself to the apprentice, he hope he could bring something luminous from his dream to his world...A long journey begins...

C&C are welcome ! More modeling coming soon :)

03 March 2006, 07:45 PM
Great men :D i like the idea :) good luck

03 March 2006, 07:48 PM
Bien marrante la créature !
Continue comme ça ! ça le fait bien !

03 March 2006, 07:49 PM
Kewl creatures!

These'll be to watch their progress.

03 March 2006, 07:58 PM
About composition. It's too much empty space in center and characters are too close to left border. Eye can miss it. Light is ok - makes area of characters contrasted and brighter then rest os picture. But just try to move a little your characters - you will see diference imho. Good luck.

03 March 2006, 09:57 PM
yeray, gpepper, gpepper thanx for response guys, more things like that are coming, thx for watch ! :)

Hynol : Thanx for the input man, yeah i know this shot problem, talked about it with a friend also and i'm thinking about it... making a closer shot on characters maybe or delete the rock at the left rework on composition...thx ;)

03 March 2006, 05:48 AM
The story seem quiete good Seb... that make me feel a little to Kaena... but that can be great... :arteest:

03 March 2006, 07:23 AM
Splendid updates! I really like that character design and the story is nice, you could make a straong image from it. Also like the comp sketch - maybe you could crop it a bit on the right side but that's to soon to say.
Yeah - good work over all, keep it up

03 March 2006, 09:06 AM
Thx people !

Lemog : oh yes, keana ? never saw it so i can't tell you, anyway i want to focus on the image here...not necessary on the story, hope you'll enjoy the next, thx for support :buttrock:

Gunilla : Thx Gunie, glad you like the concept so far, a lot of works is coming in perspective :)

03 March 2006, 09:09 AM
anyway i want to focus on the image here...not necessary on the story, hope you'll enjoy the next, thx for supportYou're totally right, and especially on these challenge rules...

03 March 2006, 09:16 AM
Your concept suprised me but it does suite the image better than anything I was thinking of.

Gotta keep an eye on this, great potential for some fantastis lighting effects.

Good luck mate :)

03 March 2006, 09:41 AM
That's a good concept you got there, good luck!

03 March 2006, 10:46 AM
awesome character design, looking really good man!

03 March 2006, 03:55 PM
Here is the basic shape of the creature, his look is almst there but it miss many details like bags, skin etc.. suggestions are welcome ! of the things you might want to do is have it up on it's toes more. It will give the animal a better sense of balance to the viewer as most heard type animals only hit the ground with the toes or toenails. A good refernce for that type of foot would be a reindeer or caraboo. Though they have three toes. :)

03 March 2006, 04:00 PM
I like the character a lot. Maybe his hind legs could be longer than the front ones, giving it a more springy action when it moves.

03 March 2006, 07:13 PM
Wow thx for replies guys, very glad you like it, i'll do my best on this one :buttrock:

Lemog : yes of course, very large palette of style possible :)

tilite : thx man !

reiv : you here...that's fantastic :bounce:, i love your work man, merci :)

Versiden : Thx much man, can't wait to see your work too

Tirjasdyn : Yep i made the 3rd toe as i said to Zapan, more beast modeling is coming, thx :)

a-papantoniou : thx, i'm thinking about it man.. but i want a beast enough stable for riding, i'll make some test when i will finish the model ;)

More update coming soon, tonight or tomorrow if i'm strong enough after school :)

03 March 2006, 09:50 PM
Great idea, keep going :scream:.

Good chance for the challenge.

03 March 2006, 02:17 AM (

Maybe i will make the face less fat...what do you think ?

03 March 2006, 02:45 AM
hey there.. very nice creature design in your sketches and cool modeling too, congrats on that.. waiting to see more of your work.. good kuck!

03 March 2006, 02:51 AM
very nice charactor man! stylize and cool , can't comment anything now! so give us more! :wip:

03 March 2006, 05:00 AM

03 March 2006, 08:37 AM
really great character! love the beard.

03 March 2006, 09:27 AM
Excellent design. Certainly one of my prefered one on this challenge. The flat way to do it si great for me. Juste continue.
Good luck.

03 March 2006, 12:25 PM
Nakary, monsitj, Lemog, Zapan, Elendil le Grand, Mr Micro26, shakes, authentic thx so much guys, your words are very encouraging, you rocks :buttrock:

Going to continue the characters modeling, i should finish the 2 guys to pose them on the beast in order to make accessories... At the same time i'm making sketches about what i really want in the environnement...looking for something magical ...stay tuned ! :)

03 March 2006, 12:30 PM
Very stylish character and cool concept ... . I see u are enjoying it Sebastien!:)

03 March 2006, 05:30 PM
for me, it's a perfect story, poetic, mysterious, all elements for a good receipt ^^

I waits now results ^^

keep the good work x)

03 March 2006, 07:59 PM
Cool characterisation mate... I already like the way this is heading:buttrock:

03 March 2006, 08:19 PM
Like your character a lot! Fat is all right to me. About your concept, I am affraiding about killing main character with such a huge dark enviroment. Is there any way to get more firelight within its place... just my 2cents. Keep up good work

03 March 2006, 08:49 PM
DaddyMack : thx to come here mate, glad u like it:buttrock:

Oweron : many thx ! yes you're right about this murder story but i wanted to experiment things i had in mind these days....about lighting i explain a bit what i'm going to fact the environnement will be lighted with many little lights, it's also the main purpose of the story...there will be organic structure with some kind of light of various colors coming from them, planning to do some shaders test to watch where i plan to go...but then if it's just because the image is too dark it's because of flat screen i have at house

more coming soon, thx to watch

03 March 2006, 03:47 AM
You already came to modeling... :)
I guess in this challenge are many people fast ;)
Nice work Sebastian :)
Cute monster ... if such thing exists ...

Maybe some more details on the legs?
Like really strong muscles... and maybe make the upper leg a bit stronger, near the hip?
I'd also suggest you to make back legs something different than the front legs

I'll keep watching ...

03 March 2006, 06:20 AM
Love the face!

03 March 2006, 04:49 PM
Super le personnage :) Il est vraiment charismatique :) Enfin... il a un air de gros bébé, j'aime beaucoup !

03 March 2006, 06:34 PM
atra : thx for the kind comment atra ! More details are coming yes, texture will make a big part of the work though. thx :buttrock:

3D_Explorer : thx man !

Darknessshade : Hehe...euh...un bebe ....:D Allons y pour le bebe ok, merci :buttrock:

See updates below

03 March 2006, 06:35 PM (

I continue the old man modeling, more details coming soon

03 March 2006, 06:47 PM
Hey Sebastien I really liked your concept and great star with modeling mate, keep it up.

03 March 2006, 06:49 PM

03 March 2006, 08:26 AM
Good job the style is always here

03 March 2006, 12:57 PM
Now this I like. The stylization is awesome. What's in store for the background?

03 March 2006, 03:41 PM
Hey Sebastien!

the old master is coming along very nicely!
The creature could have a long tail, to keep his balance? Just a thought  ;)

03 March 2006, 05:13 PM
Hey Seb !

Freakly cool design you got ! Jeez , this is just  ... me fan !

keep up the splendidness !

cheers ,

03 March 2006, 05:41 PM
alancamara, shakes, atra, monsitj, Elendil le Grand, Zapan, thanx so much !

asbassie :thanx, well the environnement in which they are going is a sort of organic mountain with dense vegetation at some place... will come later ;)

MichaelMotion : Hey thanx man, as you said the tail is not a bad idea...i was looking for a way to make this beast more balanced... maybe i will also make changes on legs...

Working on mental ray to make shader and light tests and learn to work better with passes... will send something very soon, thx for passing by :wip:

03 March 2006, 11:50 AM
I like the character of the guy and his mount! Looking forward to updates.:)

03 March 2006, 06:34 PM
Now that's just freaky. I like freaky.

03 March 2006, 12:41 PM
allez, je veut voir la suite moi coupin x)
la derniere modelisation, quand a elle, est bien realisée, juste la petite arrete centrale qui donne une impression de kinder surprise x)

03 March 2006, 03:53 PM
nice design and cool modeling ! keept it up man ! :)

03 March 2006, 07:52 PM
Yeeea, we´ve got a ride here. Looks good together  You did very nice character with old man´s face. what about to change the proportion to make his head bigger (?) Something like 1,3 times. Keep up good work.

03 March 2006, 12:01 AM
Thanks for comments guys, some more updates now...

Oweron : I think i will make it bigger yes but not as much as 2, something more important could be fun yup ;)

Updates below

03 March 2006, 12:03 AM (

Made the uvs and started to paint a texture with photos ref, it was interesting to tweak the render with photoshop, i get a lot more of texture and lighting with it...want to contrast it more

03 March 2006, 02:23 AM
Magnificent character design! Love the lighting of the face. This thread is a joy to watch!

03 March 2006, 02:28 AM
This is really cool man:)

I just love your character stylization, which give it a nice feel.

Keep it up!

03 March 2006, 08:20 AM
Nice up the render is really pretty ;)

03 March 2006, 08:40 AM
I have a tiny crit about the creature. I'm not sure about the legs - it's bit like it has four uper limbs. I'm saying this, because it may prove to be 'funky' thing to pose ;) - as most quadrupeds have some difference between hind/front legs - mostly they bend in different ways. Something to illustrate my point:

03 March 2006, 09:21 AM
Great render. I hope such realistic texture will work with so designed character. But I think it can really be a success.

03 March 2006, 10:28 AM
Nice work. I like the concept, good luck !

03 March 2006, 10:34 AM
Spectacular character!

03 March 2006, 06:02 PM
Wow great progress on the character there, looks like the shader's working well too. Hope you can finish this one man!

03 March 2006, 07:21 PM
love thee character

03 March 2006, 10:33 PM

03 March 2006, 10:28 PM
love the little guy..very funny! looks cute on the animal. nice contrast between the two figures-great!

03 March 2006, 11:48 PM
Hi Sabastien, what a lovely characters you have made i like the style so much very nice realy those creatures looks so funny with this long legs, i like it a lot, keep it coming, i just recommend you lower the value of your bump map for that character you textured and try to enhance colors, the models are so lovely made i think they deserve more in texturing, ohnestly the models are fantastic but the texture is a bit weird.(sorry but i don't exactly know what you are up to).

03 March 2006, 12:38 AM
You have some very cool looking characters here. Keep it up!

03 March 2006, 04:18 AM
No limits for your imaginations Seb... that's some good for us... and for your models... continue... especially interesting

03 March 2006, 07:16 AM

Nice concept and the models are coming out very well. Keep it up!

03 March 2006, 08:18 PM
shakes : thx man !

FlaminGlow : i understand what u mean by this, i'm gonna rework the old man texture soon, gonna change a bit the bump and add more speculars, but as the characters will be quite little in the final compositon, i will not going too far on resolution textures... thx

se7enthcin : thanx man

Lemog : no limit...this one looks fine to me  merci !

Versiden : thanks man, gald u like the project :wip:

authentic : waiting for your pics too don't forget hehe, we must finish

dorian3d : glad you like it, thanx !

04 April 2006, 06:56 PM
Realy a great style :)

I like it ...

04 April 2006, 07:58 PM
I like these creatures. They seem to defy the traditional laws of anatomy with rubbery like legs. Normally this would bother me but I like it. Keep it up!

04 April 2006, 08:29 PM
Wouhouuu ! I like it ! The style's really fun ! And the creatures' style is quite near from the one I wanted for mine at the beginning of the challenge ! I'm waiting for the final picture, it should be very appreciated !

04 April 2006, 09:58 PM (

I tried to put the characters in their environnement to make some compo test, i think this one could work, what do you think ?

04 April 2006, 06:30 AM
J'aime bcp l'ambiance qui se dégage :)
Waiting for the next ...

04 April 2006, 07:21 AM
Very nice, im really liking where this is going!

Keep it

04 April 2006, 11:30 AM
That can works... but sincerly... the pic is very dark, I'm obliged to watch it photoshop... :scream:

I'm always very impressioned by the design you've imagined... so good

04 April 2006, 01:57 PM
I missed rockin' updates here !!

The second character is awesome , I love the face and his mini grin ! egggselent !!
The overall design is superb ... but as Lemog , I find the pic very dark, probably due to the very black shadows ... Other than that , better than great !!

cheers ,

04 April 2006, 03:15 PM
Elendil_le_Grand : merci gars ;)

Vedic-kings : thx vedic, watching ur progress also

Lemog et Zapan : haha sorry for the dark image but it's because of my flat screen, actually i see it normally at home but yes i watched it at school on CRTs and it's pretty dark, will tweak my screen right now !

thank you for the support guys, really motivating ! more coming soon...:buttrock:

04 April 2006, 01:39 PM
Lemog mentioned the design you are imagining. I'm struggling to imagine this myself but I can tell there is something good comming. So keep it up

*catiously waiting*

04 April 2006, 03:37 PM
Hey nice progress! I think you could work on foreground elements and use some smart displacement mapping on your mountains and do an expensive render that you can use in a compositing. Be sure to store it in a float format :).

That way you could work on the foregruound elements to bring the characters 'into the light' so to say. I really love this concept. I think you;re going to pull off a good one here. :D

04 April 2006, 03:52 PM
Really like how this scene is coming - it's not to dark for me, but I'm on a flat screen too.
Nice comp and the characters rocks

04 April 2006, 09:06 PM
tilite : hey thanx a lot man, your comment is very appreciated, i hope to not disappoint you :wise:

jmBoekestein : hay man thanx for dropping by :)...actually i have made nothing for the environnement, just those cube to make the perspective and geometric composition... my plan is to do some sort of organic environnement, a bit like the very first sketch about this concept, so yes displacement will be very helpfull here, about foreground it will be like the background but less detailed, as u said characters in the light will be the most important ! stay tuned :)

Gunilla : thanks gunilla, glad you enjoy :)

I'm now going to work on textures for those characters, uvs and shaders are my next steps... In parallel i'm beginning on modeling environnement.

updates below

04 April 2006, 09:08 PM (

Here is the almost final characters without textures. I finally put some wires, critics and comments are welcome

04 April 2006, 06:32 AM
Nothing much to crit about the character design... I really appreciate it... I just hope that heads of beast will be well visible in the final composition... if not, no easy to really understand how works the animal... or maybe you must add a queue... a long one :)

04 April 2006, 07:56 AM
SO unbelievable characters...
love them.

04 April 2006, 09:46 PM
they're just great and funny!

04 April 2006, 10:08 PM
Yeah great characters, my prefer is the little guy ! I dig his head Lol
Great work so far !

04 April 2006, 08:21 PM
Thanx for feedback guys

Lemog : Yes the queue is done, i made it with the final tweak i had to do... in fact we're gonna see well the face of the oldman beast, about the little beast head, will be almost in the direction of the background so less visible, as the children face, but i'm gonna place them so we can see the maximum of course.

authentic : thanx vince, hope you'll like the textures soon !

shakes : thanx man !

collings : thank you, glad you like him :)

I'll post more updates this week end though, i'm being busy these days and it will be harder and harder to progress rapidly, i have my school end year exam soon (making another 3d pic from a theme lol ) so it will be 2 challenges for one unique life...

Am i crazy ?

I hope no, will just need to sleep  lol

See you soon !

04 April 2006, 11:29 PM

04 April 2006, 07:03 AM
It feels like they are going somewhere without a doubt, very nice style.

04 April 2006, 03:24 AM
nice work...really like the way you are paying attention to lighting this early in the process, especially hanging lamps (aren't they great?), and the colors you are fleshing out...good luck1

04 April 2006, 09:18 AM
Thanx a lot for the comments guys, actually i was very busy, sorry for not having updates for those last 2 weeks but school is taking me a lot of time, as i'm in holiday now i will have more time to work on no, i don't have give up yet :scream:

Haha...yes! I likes! :D

Waiting for more.

05 May 2006, 11:49 AM
Thanks a lot for every one of you, you rock guys :bounce:

I will post a real update today, i finally found a way to make my environnement !

Here's a test i made yesterday with Zbrush, i made a simple poly shape in maya, then i paint the details you can see and i export the low poly in maya (no displacement...) and a soften edge give me this :

Now i'm working on the whole set, stay tuned and thanks again :)

05 May 2006, 12:01 PM
Superbe ! That's really a ver nice work Sebastien, congrats... will continue to follow the next steps !

05 May 2006, 05:23 PM (

A bit more on the old man and his tools textures. Next updates i'll make the render with the beast textured, what do u think ?

05 May 2006, 01:26 AM
nice work on the textures Seb- looks very old world and fairy tale like. will be a great image, I think!

05 May 2006, 08:27 AM
Really nice texturing mate... comparing his design, I never imagined something like that, but that give a result very pleasant.... congratulations Seb... and good courage for continuation... that rocks :applause:

05 May 2006, 09:38 AM
Nice Job Seb !
The style is there !
Great texturing job !

05 May 2006, 10:54 PM
Thanx !

Here is a lil update about the environement, it's 50% modeled and i need to make shaders.

Have to hurry up :scream:

05 May 2006, 11:00 PM (

Basic modeling, need shading and some other details like plants

05 May 2006, 07:40 PM (

Here's the main composition of the image, the characters still needs some texturing (legs of the beast, other colors for the kid)

I rigged the old man, and pose the characters for the final image.

Now it need more details on environnement, i plan to paint a sky like i did for my 3d concept sketches.

05 May 2006, 08:30 PM (

Some more details and refinements, more to come again soon

05 May 2006, 08:36 PM
wow, this will be one crazy image! I like the environment so fat- a bit hard to tell without textures, but it looks nice and surreal like the characters.

05 May 2006, 11:18 AM
shakes : thanx buddy ! Hope this one will be finished at time :)

I'm doing a little check list of the last tings to do :

Characters :

- Finish texturing the beast (legs) , make the bump and spec maps
- Finish the little boy cloth texturing (Scarf, Sweat) and changing colors.
- Paint the lil boy face texture.

Environnement :

- Add little organic and mineral elements.
- Shade the environnement (camera mapping for 60 % ), Color, bump, spec and SSS.
- Bump Map the ground to make it look rough
- Paint the sky
- Rework the lighting set
- Add Depth of Field

Render and composite Passes :

- Render and composite into 3 global different Passes : Environnement, Characters, Sky

- Each of the Passes will be composited with effects like : SSS, Occlusion and HDRI.

That's it, basically what i need to do to finish it !

See you! :)

05 May 2006, 07:14 PM
Hey sebastien, I didn't see your composition. Interssant, the idea of journey is here and I think you have to pay attention to lighting to make your character visible because there a little small in the picture.

05 May 2006, 09:13 PM
good luck to the finish cipher!

05 May 2006, 09:16 PM
This is looking very good!

Can't wait for the final render!!

05 May 2006, 06:16 AM
