For this challenge, I will have a child(or two children?) as the main character(will be a girl)than combine her with the stories behind... war, new land and journey. The time could be far future or past isn't matter...

1. Here is my very 1st rough sketch, a girl(or two?) walking together follow the large crowd in front... a journey to a promised land...

2. A little girl with arm(machine gun)... she lost her home because of wars, she try to find her family, a hope leading her to a unknown land(future)... she is a soldier... a toy soldier.

I still other ideas in mind, but need little time to tidy up... What do you guys think of these?? I know these two isn't a wow ideas(yet), but how to make them interesting is a challenge for me... cheers Alvin

These are the new sketchs I have just done, one is actually re-work from first sketch, I have took one child off and changed to new angle... The other one(girl with machine gun) is the second concept, a "toy soldier". Any comment are welcome. Cheers

Hey Alvin,

The 2nd last sketch is looking the best to me, the one with her looking directly at the viewer. The pose and facial expression is very strong in this one. Good luck with this.

03-17-2006, 03:51 AM
Fine modelling and nice presentation.

You know, my favourite sketch of yours is still the second one. It has an air of loneliness and great mood as if she is reluctantly letting go of what she is leaving behind.

To give her context, maybe you could use another prop in front of her, like another toy that is burnt and smouldering.

I like the doll at her belt - travel light with only the essentials

03-17-2006, 04:43 AM
Hey Bro

I like where this is going...

Good luck

Thanks, bkeiser3d:)

Thsnks, Stefan Stavrev:)

Hi Ordibble P. Lop,
Thanks for your time!
Yes, scond sketch were the favourite... then I decided to add some "prop" to make it
contrast to forground, and with an air(smoke).
Thanks for the good suggestion, I will look at to add something in front of her as you suggested. Cheers Alvin:)

This is not so much a shading, but just did this for testing... I have rendered this with ambient occlusion effect on to see the model looks like. ambient occlusion does a good job on it surface, I think I will combime this AO in the final image... will see. comment welcome.

04-03-2006, 12:53 PM
hey alvin_cgi,

nice looking concept! Was that a gun she was carrying in one of your early sketches? Would be fun if she was dragging along a toy-version of it.
Also, would it be too late to change the cheeks of the face? The head looks rather nice for a joung shild, only i find the cheeks a bit wide. Maybe push them a bit backwars as well.

The clothing looks clean as well. All will depend on the textures. I could only suggest adding some foldings. Not much work though: just add a loop inbetween 2 existing ones, and pull them forward with a dropoff to the sides. These could give some more dimention to the feeling of the clothes.

You could always try it with the puppet as well :argh:

The buildings are comming along nicely. I am a sucker for gothic architecture. But it's great you're developping something different.

04-03-2006, 08:05 PM
Alvin, your modeling and you idea Rocks!!!

reminds me a little of the legend of zelda, very awsome!!
i cant wait to see more progress on this one. :P

04-04-2006, 01:21 PM
Thanks CGzero

Thanks for your times.
I went for the comcept 1, a girl walking toward a promised land etc, not the one with the gun...
I was traced her out from my daughter head. Yes, her cheeks may looks a bit wide, I will see what looks like when her hair on.
Thanks for suggested of cloth foldings, I will add foldings on after textures done, just that I found much easier to apply textures with foldings first, and the poppet as well.

EXCELLENT CONCEPT!! Really exciting -- not the typical sprites, dwarves, and gnomes ridding turtles kind of thing -- very anxious to see where you go with this. The character model you just posted is deeply disturbing, which is I guess the look you are trying to achieve. Really good work. Very high-concept. Good luck!

04-28-2006, 04:40 AM
It's been a while since I've dropped by this thread and I'm amazed to see what you've done. The modeling and texturing are superb. Really nice building design too

Thanks Mark!:)

04-28-2006, 08:03 PM
The textures on this wall are very nice,
I also like the child modeling and texturing, there's only her face cheek that sort of feels a little off.
keep up the good work!

04-28-2006, 08:14 PM
Impressive work on the buildings!

Since the buildings are supposed to be collapsed, you should add some major damage to them. BREAK THEM APART! :D

04-29-2006, 11:27 AM
Thanks lostcat, I will have a look on her cheek see what can be done.:)

Jedi-Juice, thanks for your time and your suggestion... yes, break it apart could be good, but only be minor... it should be more like sinking rather than collapsed, in my mind its always are sinking buildings... but dont know why I have call them collapse or falling... I should change the title next time:)

04-29-2006, 12:26 PM
nice modeling

Thanks coochaki:)

04-30-2006, 01:34 PM
Thanks lostcat, I will have a look on her cheek see what can be done.:)

Jedi-Juice, thanks for your time and your suggestion... yes, break it apart could be good, but only be minor... it should be more like sinking rather than collapsed, in my mind its always are sinking buildings... but dont know why I have call them collapse or falling... I should change the title next time:)

LOL! :D Ok, I see. Then perhaps some minor cracks and crevices?

Keep up the good work. :)

04-30-2006, 10:51 PM
Thanks Jedi-Juice:) :)

I will upload more "sinking" buildings soon...:D

05-01-2006, 02:02 AM
I really like your building and texturing. It looks really old and solid. If I ever enter into another CG contest, I'd like to make some structures like that.

05-01-2006, 06:57 AM
Thanks WOODY:)

You're managing to achieve a great sense of drama and mystery which I like a lot. When I look at the little child and the ruins of the structures I'm instantly intrigued. This is turning into a really cool image

05-03-2006, 01:10 AM
Thanks Mark,:)

Yes... I have try to achieve several "results" if I could, hopefully I can make it...:D

05-03-2006, 01:15 AM
Hey Alvin,

Haven't been here for a while and I see you are making some great progress . The little girl is looking very nice  and I like the architecture stuff so far too. Keep up the great job.

Just added some grass on it... cheers

05-03-2006, 03:52 PM
Wow! Alvin that grass is really beautiful...like it being golden too, rather than the typical over saturated green in most CG images. Good luck!

05-03-2006, 11:05 PM
thanks oceanbluesky, keep it "golden" sounds good!:)

05-05-2006, 02:19 PM
Nice job so far! You did a nice job on making your textures look dirty and broken up. The smaller blocks in front look like they could use a little more dirt near the ground, though. Looking forward to seeing this finished.

05-05-2006, 07:51 PM
The modeling and texturing you have done here is superb. I love that little cloth doll. You have a super nice project going on here. Good luck. I look forward to seeing this develop.

05-06-2006, 02:23 AM
thanks safe05, :)
thanks for your times, yes, those smaller blocks in front will have more dirt add on, I will do that in post effect later.:)

thanks soapy:)
glad that you like it, the funny is, that doll cloths' were only took me little time compared to others textures... :D

05-07-2006, 12:14 PM
persoanlly I like the image from left-bottom, it's more gloomy, it's not a "usual" light if you undestand me, fit's better with your theme
only one observation: the mountains from behind is at the same level as low part of the bulding, create some confusion

05-07-2006, 10:57 PM
Hi Bam,

Thanks for your time.
I like the left-bottom one as well!;)

"the mountains from behind is at the same level as low part of the bulding, create some confusion"

I see, may be the mountains are too close to the building(palace), I will move it away more and see. cheers:)

05-08-2006, 06:25 AM
[this poor english of mine....]

ermm, I mean that the line of mountain it's the same as the line of building [lower part], you should move up or down the mountains or the building [mountains I think it's better than the building]... you may even rotate mountains a little, this should give a little more deph and a little dinamics to the compozition. hope to be clear :).

05-08-2006, 12:56 PM
[this poor english of mine.... too]:)

I think I understand now.. I will try your suggestions and see...;) , will post result later.

05-08-2006, 06:07 PM

05-10-2006, 02:40 PM
I like the camera angle and colors used on the palace. Looks a little to clean of a separation between foreground and background (color wise), but I'm sure you've got something specific in mind. ;)

05-19-2006, 03:16 AM
Thanks for showing your compositing setup. It looks like you're getting really close now. That dirty sky works really well against the backdrop of all that destruction. Excellent stuff!

Facial expression...(Left image: before, right image: after) turned her eyes pupil toward viewer, open a bit of her mouth... so she looks more curious, some uncertain and wonder...

05-20-2006, 01:38 PM
Hi there, to me it still doesnt look like curiosity. I think the eyes need to be squinting more and the cheeks raised.
Also, i know its a strongly lit image but the falloff on the face looks a bit sharp, try softening that off.
Good luck with it:)

this is update of the post effects wip, I will matte painting smoke and some lighting rays at the mountains. cheers

05-21-2006, 08:10 AM
hey Alvin! Congrats! Really a great image! Could you tell me more about the sky? Did you use a sky gen? It's amazing!

05-21-2006, 01:33 PM
Hi Marco, Thanks for your time.:)

The final sky will has 2(3) layers, this one here is the main sky which has rays effects, I want the sky reflect the late afternoon or dawn feel of the whole image. I have create a few samples if you look at the old post, Sky is fun one to do but also very hard to get it right...
The images was created by using Ogo_Taiki plugin, I dont think Sky gen can do anything close to this... (I might be wrong...):D
Taiki is Lightwave plugin and very good one!

So are you Lightwaver as well?:)

this is close up shot of the main building, I have matte painted some of the small cracks on the edges of the building, I think this will give it more natural feeling of it, and also added subtle smoke on the ground. cheers

05-22-2006, 06:04 AM
Wonderful Alvin -- really beautiful colors and strong shapes. Like the smoke and various shadows across this surface. Looking forward to seeing the final image soon! Good luck!

Then I have to thank you because your suggestion about Ogo_Taiki plug-in is very useful to me. I'm going to find it and study it! Thanks again! And congrats for your work my "Lightwaver fellow"!

Aliyah's diary

I have been crying for a long time, days and nights...I prayed for them every day and night...
... I heard someone saw them in a village called "Hopian", I think it means hope...Hopian is about 10 days walk...I think I can make it.
Today is my birthday, I turned 5, a big girl now... that means I haven't seen them for about 2 years...
I can barely remember their faces...
I have to find them this fall before the winter comes...
Tomorrow is the day? I have been waiting for this, they said if I go near the place called "Valley of the Shadow", then I can take a ride with traders who can take me to Hopian, can I trust them... I mean strangers???

Dear Lord, bless me and my journey...
Dora, you were given to me on my 3rd birthday, and since then, you are my best friend, always listens to me and be with me, always.

Dora, we will leaving soon, did you know you are my only companion on this journey... Oh! and God!

It is now, I must go today, I must be there before sunset...
...where are we, how far away from the Valley of the Shadow, are we near there or lost... I don't see any people around... all the buildings are falling and sinking...
I wonder should we continue or go back...
Dora, I am worried, scared... are you? It's cold, silence and it's dark...
NO, I do not fear anymore... I want this all to end.....
...that flood separated us a long time ago, but I believe we will meet again...Nothing can stop us from getting together again... I know the real journey has just begun...
Dear Lord, bless me and my journey... bless Papa and Mama, and help me find them soon...

05-26-2006, 10:18 AM
