Is there anything worse then getting milk, when you just got home from school and thought you could finaly get some rest. Doing an errand for your mom, at the one place, where they have the finest of this product; at "Cat-Rock City".

03-02-2006, 11:32 PM
I'm subscribing to this one, it should be fun!
at first I thought it was a cat who was inside there, ordering the dog to go and get some milk, something like cats ruling over the dogs...

Best of luck with the 5D (it's quite an amount of D's, you know)

03-03-2006, 12:22 AM

Started modeling 'CatRockCity'

03-03-2006, 10:09 AM
nice rock. :D

03-03-2006, 10:13 AM
excellent start. Maybe more hard edges and putting more up the ears; I know it's a wip^but I have many hopes in your thread.

03-03-2006, 12:41 PM
This one really rocks! ....interesting concept. Good luck and keep those wonderful models coming.

03-03-2006, 01:20 PM

03-03-2006, 02:22 PM
This is a funny story, hehe :buttrock:
Nice sketch as well! Can't wait for updates!:bounce:

03-03-2006, 02:53 PM
great :)
cool concept, i agree with authentic, hard edges and bevels on the angles will make it "more rock" :) . keep it up !

03-03-2006, 03:45 PM
Dont now why everone thinks it shod look more rocky, its only going to be a blurdout shadow in the backgrund anyway. And the shape i good if you are in a tranin like the grand canyon.

so it looks good, the consept is funy :D. go for it

03-03-2006, 04:11 PM
So... a dog is going to get milk in a cat city... Gee, no wonder why he is upset...

Good luck again!

03-03-2006, 04:39 PM

Here's a quick texture for the 'CatRockCity'
In the end, I think there will only be a silhouet of this rock, dunno yet..

03-03-2006, 06:46 PM
that is a perfect catrock, even if you only have the silhouette:thumbsup:

03-04-2006, 11:48 AM
Hi Michael, like your ideas of cat rock city, looks very promising so far with this 3d cat symbol...looking forward

03-04-2006, 12:17 PM
Great start for the modeling - very cool catcity!

03-04-2006, 01:06 PM
Very nice!
I really like the Cat City! No critics!

03-04-2006, 01:25 PM
It i just a suggestion: Make the botom sharper. i mean I would make sharpe stones there. But again, the deatils depend how much blur will have because of the motion blur. However, I suggest a slight color change from bottom to the top

03-04-2006, 03:40 PM
Funny idea, and really interesting style so far.

Keep it up!

03-04-2006, 06:46 PM
Cool idea

03-05-2006, 08:44 PM
makaron, 'CatRockCity' has to be clear. People have to notice it almost right away, so, don't know how much blur I'll use, but thanx a lot for your words! :)

cipher, cheers for that comment.. :)

Gunilla, thanx a lot!

Alberto_Ro, ;)

E.M.P.E.R.O.R., don't know about how much blur I will give it, texture isn't dun yet. I'll think about the color variation tho, thanx!

Started modeling the doghouse.

Roof still has to be done. then comes a little stylizing (proportions). Thought I'd post an update..

03-06-2006, 05:12 PM
Nice beginning, looks very sweet! :)

03-06-2006, 05:13 PM

03-06-2006, 05:37 PM
cool keep going

03-06-2006, 06:15 PM
Yeah, this is nice progress. What about more kinda perspective deformation for the doghouse?

03-07-2006, 03:10 AM
Ok man. I loved your concept, so i cant let you move on your image without telling you something thats bothering me. If you dont change, then its your choice, but ill have a clear conscience that i, at least talked to you about it.

I think your cat rock is too blured. It feels strange to me... Instead of telling you why, ill give to you a link that you probably read already, on the instructions page of the challenge. Anyway, here is what id like to say, and CGSociety people said better than i would:

Atmospheric Depth
Depth haze arises from the scattering of light by particles suspended in the air. The physics of scattering is well known and is worth noting. Scattering will reduce contrast but dos not blur the background image. Selective scattering and absorption of different wavelengths also leads to shifting of color towards the one background color.

So, to achieve atmospheric depth to an image all you have to do is add more of a single color with increasing depth. The color should be the same light color of the distant sky. The result is that the foreground is always darker with more contrast and saturation. With distance, the contrast drops and the image lightens towards the distant sky color - but things in the distance are not blurred.

You can have the blur, but it mimics lenses view, and thats not wrong, but i dont think its looking so good on your image as a focused "distant but kinda hard to see " rock would.... (just like on your sketch...)

I believe im complicating a simple thing im trying to say.... Here is the link...

03-07-2006, 04:58 AM
the dog house is adorable, really nice work on modeling the planks, did you try leaning the doghouse back rather than forward?..I think that would help the composition alot.
I also think the 'catrock' is too blurred, though it's a only a wip & I'm sure you'll be working on that some more,

looking forward to seeing some colour in this, such a cool style you have

03-07-2006, 05:02 AM
Hi Michael,

Very funny idea, yous sketch looks great, and it is great that you already hit the modeling milestone, :) what an envy.

Very nice modeling for the doghouse - sweet style

03-07-2006, 08:26 AM
love that doghouse. like the style with nails missing and boards are look like they falling off soon... but as magic it still stands... :) and the touch with the bone above the door is original :applause: usally it is a dogsname there...

03-07-2006, 09:16 AM

Stefan_Morrell, thanx! still working on it and haven't decided the pose for the DogHouse yet, bit more backwords would help a lot for the perspective POV, thnx for the words! ;)

Nakary, Gunilla,, thank you!

makaron, thanx a lot! yeah I know! or a board with some sort of name the've given the house, so.. there's still some option left heh?

03-07-2006, 05:33 PM
Your concept is so simple and great all at the same time, the modeling on the dog hours it self is extremely detailed, cant wait to see it textured and lit.

This is looking very good. Lots of style.

03-07-2006, 10:08 PM
I love ur concept and i dream ur render keep the simplicity of your rought

03-07-2006, 11:11 PM
Hey great work on the modeling Michael, it really captures the style you have in your concept. And the style in general looks great! :applause: My only comment would be that the nails don't make indentations into the wood. And I think since you went through all of the trouble to model the wood grain in into the individual planks this little detail might add to the look. Anyway just my two cents. Keep up the excellent work!

Matt :)

03-07-2006, 11:58 PM
This is one neat house....very nice work u do sir ! :)

03-08-2006, 01:59 PM
thanks for comments, i love your 3d concept

03-08-2006, 07:12 PM
I was going to say the lil dog looks real cute, but I've been beaten to it. Nevertheless he is cute, I had a feeling he would be :)

03-08-2006, 07:22 PM
The dog is neat! I love your process so far. The dog house is a character itself

03-08-2006, 07:51 PM
The little dog rules:)

03-08-2006, 08:06 PM
Reaaly Love de little Dog... so cute!!

03-08-2006, 08:33 PM
I like it very much either in terms of the design resolution you gave to the image, and the cartoon fell you pass to the modeling and in terms of idea too, I found it very interesting the journey of an unwanted dog trhu the city of cats. The hole Idea of abandon / independent age and the controverses, those unfriendly tipes we must face in our life journey is well depict on the image! I cant wait to see more!

03-08-2006, 08:58 PM
cool modeling

03-08-2006, 11:59 PM
good job man...

Agamemnwn, awww thanx, you made me  again!

se7enthcin, I now use Lightwave and ZBrush, there's a lot of other great 3d software I want to explore tho, like XSI, Modo, so the road ahead is long..

03-10-2006, 04:17 PM
hey man,
thanks for checkin out my entry!
I like your character design.

03-10-2006, 04:26 PM
Very cute dog! will it have fur? The concept is sp far my fav.!
Good luck!

03-10-2006, 04:38 PM
The dog is excellent!*****

03-11-2006, 12:19 AM
It's pretty obvious by the number of replies that I'm not the only one who likes your style a lot. Good luck

03-11-2006, 02:06 AM
Fair enough. I think you would like modo. You should try out the demo. I was sold on that program in the first five minutes. Honestly, five minutes is all it takes. XSI is pretty cool but I do not think it could replace my maya. I recomend you try both of them because each user likes different things.

03-11-2006, 06:28 AM
Ya ! nice start :P i didn't choose my idea yet and u are already in the modelisation stage ! wow .

Great sketch and idea! I luv cartoon style, maybe i'll take this kind of approch too for my entry. If u have time maybe u can model his mother saying him goodbye( just an idea like that).

Thx for passing on my thread too.

Good luck dude !

modeled the car (carrier, dunno how to call it) with some milkbottles (maybe there will be three) behind the dog.

Still has to be stylized, lines are to straight for now, but, here's where I am so far..

03-11-2006, 04:49 PM
We usually call the car a "fifth wheel." At any rate. Keep going man!

03-11-2006, 05:02 PM
Very nice!

03-11-2006, 05:03 PM
keeo going :bounce:

03-11-2006, 05:09 PM
great stuff,I love all the curves on the dog house...never a straight line in sight!.

03-11-2006, 05:36 PM
lovely concept and excellent cartoon style ! the dog is so cute. I prefer the dog's head's shape of the concept but the 3d one looks more agressive (and yet just as cute). very nice.

03-11-2006, 06:29 PM
Still my best fav. best thread! you got my vote, man!

The planks and stylin on the doghouse are killer Michael:thumbsup: LYW... How did you make the planks?

I think the dawgs head is really well communicated but maybe the ears could be thicker and I think his body could benefit from being a little wider, especially on his back end to break up the uniformity a little...

...Hope it's OK for me to critique... Anyways... I've just unfolded my old lawn chair so I can stay in the yard and watch this evolve... Rock on:buttrock:

03-11-2006, 06:52 PM
Yea, this is gonna be a good one. Nice style.

03-11-2006, 07:52 PM
Looks very promising! Subscribed.

03-11-2006, 09:37 PM
tuck, cheers, glad you like it..

varma, still have to decide if the dog would have some fur..., haven't made up my mind... You'll have to be patient :D Thanx!

sergioKomic, appreciate it.. ;)

mdavid, yes, I know and it means a lot, Realy overwhelming, it's a great feeling :bounce:

se7enthcin, thanx for that, I already did try the modo demo, but a month was to short, I didn't have time to fully enjoy it, what I did btw. Going for the extension of the demo, but I'm very busy, so hope I can explore it more... Oh.. fifth wheel, k! Thanx for that!

dominikmk, I have been thinking of modeling his mother, and I guess I'm going for it.. Still a lot of work to be done with the main character.. thank you!

Alberto_Ro, mate

the best, thank you!

Stefan_Morrell, well that's what I'm going for! the fifth wheel is going to look like the doghouse to, it's just to straight now! Thanks man!

Banjowanjo, when I'm done modeling, posing and texturing the dogs head will be turned slightly, this is why the head isn't like the concept yet.. also didn't want to it make that cute.. thanks!

varma, thnx! aren't you in the judging? :D I need people like you!

DaddyMack, I hope you will enjoy the ride! Thanx! No problem, critz is what I need! Makes this picture even better I think. I'll try that with the dogs body.. cheers!

3D_Explorer, thanx for dropping by and taking the time to comment! ;)

JDPinto, cheers!

modeling a part of the fence, chimney and pully.. There will be a rope around the pully with at the end a hook, or to clichE? Maybe a bucket?!.. dunno yet.
Nails in de front of the house are to big, just noticed, I'll fix that next..

here's the update..

03-13-2006, 05:21 PM
Like I said before, the dog house you created has a life of its own. I consider it more as a character of your still, than a prop.

03-13-2006, 05:24 PM
a bucket does sound good, though with your style I think either will be just as good :)
nice work on the wood planks,& post some wires too if you can,I like seeing how your making these shapes

03-13-2006, 06:16 PM
cool updates

03-13-2006, 07:34 PM

03-13-2006, 08:00 PM

cipher, I'll try and do my best, thnx for dropping by..

shakes, I'm starting to love the doghouse myself! thanx ;)

elmasfeo, the door, yeah, that's because of the big head of the dog, but he'll fit in
there, maybe I'll strech it up slightly, cheers mate!

yunisirees, no1gashuffer, ragdoll, Loris_, :) thanks a lot!

Hoju, the wood was done pretty easy, I'll show some wires next time I update.. ;)

03-14-2006, 08:35 AM
makaron, been thinking about that, but maybe not for the bottles, there's gonna be something else.. cheers Mona!

hmm.. thats not fair... you have to tell what.. :curious: now I have to sit here and guess... haha

.oO( for nails and hammer, to repair the doghouse? to keep the petcat in? maybe for the mail? or for mummydogs curles? worms for fishing? or milkmoney?)

03-14-2006, 09:14 AM

Hey all, been modeling the textballoon and the bomb..

what do you think? Should I make a flat texture (draw the bomb in 2D) and past it on the balloon? Or go with this.. Hope you'll comment Cheers!

03-14-2006, 04:44 PM
excellent with this style of bubble I think.

03-14-2006, 05:32 PM
maybe the 3D makes it better in a "3D picture" but I really like the 2D version... I vote on that... 2D :)

03-14-2006, 05:33 PM
Ha ha ha, man, this is first real 3D comics bubble Ive ever seen :scream: Go with this style. BTW, very nice progressing in here. What do you think about to thick ears just a little?

03-14-2006, 06:22 PM
Love every stpe of this - the dog house is fantastic!

03-14-2006, 06:44 PM
Not much to say. One of my favorites!

03-15-2006, 07:14 PM
I'd definitely do a 2d balloon if I was doing this-I don't think 3d speech balloons work, or are necessary. lookin cute !

03-15-2006, 09:12 PM
cool updates

Modeled the bucket and a 'know-it-all'-bird, The bird will point his finger/wing just like the mother (humor element), where the little fella should go get the milk..

03-16-2006, 12:14 PM

05-04-2006, 08:51 AM
I agree, this concept is too good to be abandoned! Please give us some more, if you can spare the time!

05-05-2006, 12:01 PM
I'd like to thank everybody for supporting while it lasted..
I'm sorry to say I think I won't be able to finish, the job is holding me back with the always anoying deadlines and those last weeks I'm working on a big project that's takin' all my spare time too... So, hope to be back in time.. but if I'm not, please don't shoot me!
Thanx again for the words and support! ;)

05-05-2006, 12:09 PM
If you do have to give it up it's a great shame.

But the family dinner comes first ....

05-05-2006, 12:45 PM
It's a sign of how wonderful your work is that you have so many keen followers on your thread - me included. But like hobo said, putting meals on the table comes first. I sure know what it's like to be dragged away from the things you enjoy doing by the realities of work, and I bet most of the other folks here do too. Good luck with those deadlines Michael
