Lets see dem Ladies now...

02-28-2006, 01:38 PM (

Cheers guys! This should be fun! I hope I can finish this one, as I had other things I needed to do at the end of the 'Spectacular' challenge and never completed it.

My first thoughts on 'The Journey Begins' was something Pre-Raphaelity, and I don't really mean the knights in shining armour Waterhouse pre-raphaelite stuff. I mean the artists like Millais and Ford Madox Brown, who were as much social commentators as romantics. Some of their works showing real people in real settings are incredible character studies. So I was thinking a Victorian or Edwardian family on the deck of a ship or a train station huddled together, their lives in suitcases about them. On their faces struggle and pain as they go to a new life somewhere, leaving behind something they don't want to. Perhaps two children, oblivious of the heartache running enthusiastically around their feet, with the steam of the train or the smoke of the ships funnel atmospherically swirling around them, perhaps on the Titanic.... My other alternative was a couple of hot girls in short skirts and backpacks, hitchhiking. Hmm.... what to do eh!? ;)

02-28-2006, 01:41 PM
If not, u will recieve a personal slapping from me! Cocks hand in the ready position*:D

02-28-2006, 01:44 PM
mate i love the first one already... although the hitchhyking femme fatales doesnt sound too bad. (woof woof, -pant- hooooooooooooowl!!!) cant wait to see what you bring.. good luck!!!

02-28-2006, 01:44 PM fast.nice to see you enter.i like your titanic.look great composition.can't wait to see more.good luck.:bounce:

02-28-2006, 01:47 PM
Whaaaa no "chics in boots"

02-28-2006, 01:47 PM (

The train idea.... Back to work now! Lunchtime over. All I want to do is look at the challenge page... oh well, tonight... :)

02-28-2006, 01:49 PM

02-28-2006, 01:52 PM
My other alternative was a couple of hot girls in short skirts and backpacks, hitchhiking. Hmm.... what to do eh!? ;)

Choices, choices!
I really like the concepts so far - its strange too, cos ive never seen you draw children.
I guess this is gonna be a non-sexy piece for a change, eh?

Keep up the goodness.

02-28-2006, 02:02 PM
My other alternative was a couple of hot girls in short skirts and backpacks, hitchhiking.

depends on the camera angle !

nah, your concept sound great so far. Keep it ^p!

02-28-2006, 02:08 PM
Your work is always so impressive and inspiring. Canít wait to see some of these concepts fleshed out.

Nice looking concepts.. Don't go to quick, k? :D

02-28-2006, 05:01 PM
Hey, Aly! Good to see you back again. Look forward to seeing what you come up with...

An' I'm just going to sit here patiently and wait to see how long you can resist doing sketches of the hitchhiking women.
(Just the sketches, mind you, you don't have to stick with them if you don't want to...)

02-28-2006, 05:06 PM
Nice to see you for this new challenge , i'm sure to see a great pic

02-28-2006, 05:47 PM
Great start so far, Ally. Even in these early sketches, I'm really digging the expressiveness of the characters (particularly playfulness the girl). I'll definately be keeping an eye on this thread. :)

02-28-2006, 05:58 PM
I wish a good luck and lots of creative energy to all of my buddies from previous challenges :D Dont be mad coz I'll post the same first reply to all of u, but wishes r sincere.. I just wanna to sign up to ur thread. Once again best of luck!

02-28-2006, 07:42 PM (

Getting these out of my system! I'm sure I've seen this kind of composition before. A bit Norman Rockwelly, but I mifght change it. Make it the past with a coach, or at a spaceport....hmmm...

02-28-2006, 07:47 PM
hahaa i love this last concept, composition is calm and tells the story wery well, good luck ally:thumbsup:

03-01-2006, 01:49 AM
Hi , Aly!
Good idea with bus!)
and good Luck in Journey)

03-01-2006, 02:53 AM
Nice concept, it's got a good feel. I think it just needs some indication of where the journey will lead.

03-01-2006, 03:33 AM
nice sketches going on aly~i kinda like the last one~it has a sense of emotion to it and the compo clicks either:)keep them coming mate

03-01-2006, 04:43 AM
Didn't see you join Posh! This is going to be tense... love your work! :D

03-01-2006, 04:52 AM
Fantastic little ideation sketches. They all have potential to me....

03-01-2006, 01:46 PM (

I thought I'd put a bit of detail on the couple in my last rough to see how I felt with it. I'm still thinking of changing the time period to the future or the past, but I quite like the idea of doing an old 1950's British bus like in a Miss Marple story. I'll try and sketch up a couple of other ideas as well.

03-01-2006, 01:59 PM
wow~looks good even in the early color sketch,i like their reddish cheek.oldschool pin up kinda style.keep them coming my friend:)

03-01-2006, 02:01 PM
awwwwwwwwwwwwww - omg her expression is ssssssso cute :D
All the luck in the world aly :)

03-01-2006, 02:03 PM
Yes, good expression indeed!
Love her lips, very good.!
Keep going! ;)

03-01-2006, 02:04 PM
I like your rendering! This has a real greeting card/ Rockwell feel to it.

03-01-2006, 02:24 PM
Very nice color sketch. I like the expressions and emotions how turning out. I'll be keeping an eye on the progress of this!! ;) keep it up.

03-01-2006, 03:30 PM
Hi there, sweet concept, can't wait to see more!

03-01-2006, 03:35 PM

03-01-2006, 05:32 PM
Yahooo!!! a new challenge, I was quite missing it...when did it start ?
Uh and by the way Aly:good luck with your entry! I love your style.

03-01-2006, 06:30 PM
very nice emotion in that sketch.

My suggestion would be to make this WW2 era - make that guy to be going to war and.. yeah.. I think that would work pretty nice as the context (massive WW2) would make the piece go to pretty tragic direction (which might be nice thinking of impressing the judges)

03-01-2006, 06:46 PM
hiyaaaa aly!! :D :D nice sketches and idea!! n:D good luck on the challenge, great to see you again :D

03-01-2006, 07:36 PM

i love the colors on the couple and the feeling of goodbye :D great job Aly :D

03-02-2006, 08:36 AM
I agree!! Tis very Rockwellish....I like it!

I would love to see this fully rendered, it has so much promise. I'd love to see them on their own with just the lamppost, actually, a la rockwell...

03-02-2006, 09:36 AM
hiho aly :wip: very promising sketches .. the 1950's style is really cool :D

Journey Begins Challenge by Khan (

03-02-2006, 06:07 PM
Lovely journey
i like it
so glad to see u in challenge again

03-02-2006, 10:23 PM (

The composition is too broad, but it's got some of the elements in that I'd go with if this is what I settle on. The idea is this is set in the 1950's, with Ted and Rockers, and when British kids had to do National Service. The Bus driver is going to be looking at his watch...

Thankyou for all the hello's!

03-02-2006, 10:23 PM
A BIG HELLO to everyone! I'll try and respond to each post in the future! I can't believe how quickly people are posting stuff up this time. It's buzzing!! And there's loads of colour stuff coming through already....

This time I want to get my idea sorted quickly, rather than faff around with loads of ideas over the first month, as I'm determined to finish this one... Unlike last time where I was a big wet non-finishererer...

03-02-2006, 10:28 PM
Hi Poshspice, A really great aproach of this subject, I really like your way to skech characters, there is a lot of life in them. I will follow your thread with attention. Good luck !

03-02-2006, 10:46 PM

You can take any time period, any fashion, and any style and incorporate it into your work seamlessly!

This is looking mighty fine! Great idea and handled really well. Maybe put some kind of indication that hes going to war or something to add to the drama? I dunno....

(Actually, scrub that - i just read that its set in the 50s, so that rules out any big war he could be going to)

03-02-2006, 11:01 PM
well... I can just type... great... it says it all...

03-02-2006, 11:04 PM
Really like all your concepts heh... Anyway, that last one is really good but at the moment it lacks a certain epicness somehow. However t's an emoitional goodbye scene, a start of a journey and I'm sure that you'll add the details and touches that will take it into epic territory :D Will keep an eye on this (damnit, running out of eyes  )

03-02-2006, 11:05 PM

I love the way it's going with the bus in there- it sets the scene off perfectly. Go with it, man! I repeat: I love it!

p.s- there is now a zeppelin in my thread, thanks for the idea. :D

03-03-2006, 12:44 AM
I already told duddle, what I would do if I were to not see u finish, I already have my ticket on reserve, hehe! Gets brass knuckles, shotgun, pistol, nail bat, nicca beata, puts it in the bag*:p :D

03-03-2006, 12:56 AM
Nice work Ali! I like how the line flows cleanly in your sketches, u have the gift :) c ya later!

03-03-2006, 04:33 AM
yeah mate progress now this have more life... when do you will show more?

03-03-2006, 08:51 AM
I'll try and keep up with the individual responses, now. Left it a bit late before...

Deevad - Thankyou! I try to get a bit of life in them. I'll check you thread out too!
Andy H - Hi Andy! Thanks maytee. I would set it in the 40's and have him going off to war, but I kind of like the fifties setting. This may well all change next week though! :)
Makaron - Thanks! :)
urgaffel - Cheers! I'm not going for epic with this. I kind of figure that a parting, going on a journey and travelling is all about personal experience. And you could be going to the moon, or down to the shops. It's all about a story. So I know what you mean, but no explosions here! :)
Paperclip - I've just seen your signature, and I can't stop chuckling to myself like a loon! :D
beelow - Hi Bryce! Hehheh! Thankyou.
Climax - Thanks for that comment! :)
Melkao - More soon, I hope!

Ta ta fer now... back to work!

03-03-2006, 09:36 AM
i like how the composition is turning out. Very 1950s feeling... I like the kids in the right loughing and is a good idea that the bus driver will be looking his watch. I have no comments or any suggestions at this point. I want to see more!! :) Just keep it up Aly!!

03-03-2006, 01:30 PM
really adds to it this new take on the idea... lot of emotion and story in it... more more more..

03-03-2006, 01:33 PM
Yow Aly - really looking incredible. I am in awe of your sketches! You've captured a great deal of emotion already :bounce: knew this thread was going to be great...really enjoying watching it develop.

03-03-2006, 02:52 PM
Great sketches! I really like your ideas so far!

 good luck with the challenge

03-03-2006, 03:57 PM
urgaffel - Cheers! I'm not going for epic with this. I kind of figure that a parting, going on a journey and travelling is all about personal experience. And you could be going to the moon, or down to the shops. It's all about a story. So I know what you mean, but no explosions here! :)

Aww... Why not? :p Seriously though, doesn't need to be epic, I'm convinced it will look great regardless. And with this setting you can squeeze in a few scantily clad girls somewhere ;)

03-03-2006, 04:00 PM
Jeeesss.. Your characters rock..
so little lines and so much personality's already.. impressive.. ;)

03-03-2006, 04:09 PM
Looking very good so far!!! I like your style!!

03-03-2006, 04:40 PM
that style just complements the area and idea so much Aly.
Besides the character work is impressive. Each of those figures has so much personality it almost hurts.

03-03-2006, 04:51 PM
Good luck! Well, we see Another great working from you :D First concept is great

03-03-2006, 09:37 PM
great stuff!! nice update! i love it! the idea is great!! :D

03-03-2006, 09:58 PM (

Phew... I've spent quite a bit of time playing with the composition tonight. Decided to set it in the 40's after all. Thanks Andy H! I think the idea that he's going off to war is a bit more dramatic, rather than just National Service. So the Teds are out! However I might put the 50's girl I started colouring in the back of the bus, as I kind of liked her! I also might bring the composition up a bit, but I don't want to lose the couple in the other stuff, as they are the focal point.

I'm doing it again, and giving myself lots of work.... I'm going to have to research a bus, correct uniform, haircuts... eek! However, this one is growing on me I think! :)

03-03-2006, 10:11 PM
Yeah, I am rather fond of this idea. Seems to have more emotion in it, and I am interested to see how u will handle this piece. U should give a 40's look to this piece as well, Paint it in the style of the era, if ur up to the challenge dude, I see that u may have to make changes compositionally, as well, keep it up dude, I will be lurking!

03-03-2006, 10:52 PM
Looking good, Aly!

I have one suggestion on composition: What if the entire image (except for the couple) were flipped, so that the motion in the piece is from left to right, with the would-be soldier closer to the bus and the exit (right) side of the page.

That might also entail showing the front of the car that's currently screen-right. It does look a little weird that both vehicles are parked but facing away from each other right now. It's like one vehicle was driven by someone British and the other someone American. And we can't have that, now, can we? Flipping the image will also make the bus look more British and not parked on the wrong side of the street! :)

To answer your question in my thread, yes, blue col-erase pencils, all the way!
Hey, and just out of curiousity, what happened to Mr. Dixon this time around?

03-03-2006, 10:55 PM
Looking good Aly. I really like the idea!! I wish I could come up something more original but alas a fairytale it is!

Haha, I can't wait to see some colours

03-04-2006, 01:00 AM
Must say I agree with walrus- having it flipped would make it flow better.

And I did wonder what happened to dixon...looks like it's a lonely crowd now, just walrus, poshspice and jonnyduddle left....the cute/funny crowd...

sob. :'(

03-04-2006, 01:04 AM
Great drawing.
I noticed in your work you seem to avoid BG's a bit or atleast flatten them a lot.
My suggestion is to add some more depth. If you are put off by perspective then bust out a REAL simple setup in 3D( no more than primitives ) and fly around the scene with the camera until you get a comosition with all the things you want in it, but is more dynamic and interesting. Right now the flatness is doing the concept a disservis. Also watch out for some scale issues. Thoes 40's cars and busses are a lot bigger that you would expect.

Great start, I love where this is going.

03-04-2006, 06:44 AM
very nice drawing! I follow your work for long time here and at ca , do you have any suggestion about human drawing?
I agree with walrus about the direction of car , and perspective , but I think your work will shine when you coloring! wait for more !

03-04-2006, 07:11 AM
This is a very emotional scene Aly and you are capturing it so well. And as you've said, we must not loose our main focus on the couple.

03-04-2006, 07:42 AM
i'd agreed what koryh mentioned about playing with the angle,it could look better than having it profile shot.this concept is great so far:)

03-04-2006, 06:24 PM
Hmm, some food for thought here...

Loris - Thankyou, but it looks unlikely to be 50's now, unless I change my
mind yet again!
Wil - I hope to get some in there... I'm trying because the brief says to
concentrate on 'character'. :)
Elsie - Hehheh! Cheers!
enialadam - :)
urgaffel - There will definitely be girls, but no scantily clad ones! :)
Michael Motion - Thankyou Michael! I think you're the master of persoanlity
Zycho - Thankyou! :)
Kyena - Thanks Tascha... at the moment they're doodles, I hope to not lose
the character when I render them up. It can happen sometimes.
rawwad - Cheers.. I might come back to the first concept yet, if this
doesn't go well!
Calisto - Thankyou Linda.
Beelow - Cheers, I'm trying for some depth in the emotion and the
characters. So I'm concenterating on them. :)
Walrus - I'd tried flipping the whole pic, but wasn't happy with it.
However, I didn't try what you suggested, and avoid flipping the couple, so
I'll do that. Very valuable thoughts! I haven't settled on a final layout
yet though.
enialadam - Thankyou Madelaine. This isn't very original, I guess it's all
in the way you do something... I just hope I can tell a little story.
paperclip - Mr Dixon is keeping a low profile isn't he. I'm sure he'll join
in! :)
KOryH - I'm not put off by BG's, but I get bored with them really quickly. I
like concentrating on character, so I tend to put them against minimalist
backgrounds. I'll do what you suggest and build something pretty basic in 3D
to get an idea. BTW, this is Britain! Our cars have always been diddy! ;)
The bus is pretty much to scale; I had a look at a few quickly online. The
car needs work as I've only sketched in a rough position, not a final
drawing. Thankyou!
monsitj - Hi Monsit! I'm hardly the person to ask about human anatomy! ;)
What is it you're wanting to know? :\
Queensoul - Thankyou! If I end up playing with the perspective a bit, their
position could change, but they'll always be central.
sh@ke - Will do! Thanks Michael.

I do kind of like the straight on view though. I've been looking a lot at Rockwell and he uses that particular viewpoint quite frequently. So I dunno... long way to go still! :)

03-04-2006, 06:27 PM (

I flipped the whole thing as Walrus suggested, and I kind of like it. I also thought I'd put up another real quick doodle, which I like but doesn't suggest 'The Journey Begins' quite as much. He's jumped on the back of a double decker bus and she just can't let go... sniff...

03-04-2006, 06:34 PM
I do like the straight on view too... suit this image perfect..the flipped version works better for me... I see the couple more in "focus"... :)

03-04-2006, 06:42 PM
Emotional concept.. Its lovely! Really nice sketches! Love your previous work.. Good luck and have fun.. See you around! :)

03-04-2006, 11:04 PM
Glad to hear that ur a fan of Norman Rockwell, illustrations dude! He has some lovely compos dude. Ur work is somewhat remant of his, I see the influence of his work on yours. good luck with this again, I am sure that u will figure it out, u have till May to solve and finish things, pending on ur schedule.

03-05-2006, 12:45 AM
G' day Poshspice, love your work!

The top sketch looks good, easy to read! Can't wait to see your next few milestones!

Keep up the great work!

03-05-2006, 07:24 AM
mmm tasty, i want some more:)

03-05-2006, 09:25 AM
the flipped composition is looking better Aly. but i loved the close up with the "plz dont go" feeling of it . more dramatic and dynamic image and more emotional and personal from the one above. Amazing job on the characters :D will be following your work . have a good day :D

03-05-2006, 04:16 PM
I like the first concept more! The characters in the bus can be a bit distracting tho, probably taking away from the mood you want to depict. Just a thought. Love to see this finished! good luck!

03-05-2006, 04:24 PM
I really like this new sketch, much more emotion and expression

03-05-2006, 04:49 PM
i cant see it...;_; it opened the upper one half way...

03-06-2006, 03:15 PM
Emotional concept.. Its lovely! Really nice sketches! Love your previous work.. Good luck and have fun.. See you around! :)

i'm agree the emotional sence is great, this is one of the most deep that i have seen...good work!

03-06-2006, 06:32 PM
I love the Rockwell-feel of the piece (I have 4 books of his work at my home); a very emotional and expressive piece.

My only thought for improving the image is maybe (and I say maybe) increase the size of the top and right sides of the comp to include more of the enviroment. Maybe if you include some type of background scene that has to do with the soldiers leaving for war (like a sea port with the ships preparing to leave), that might highten the emotional impact of the 2 lovers?

All the best, Aly. :)

love your work! wish you all the best in this one. i'd agree that it reads a little easier in this flipped version. as you pointed out though, there's some danger in losing the focal point a bit with this much information gong on on both sides, and your other quick doodle again nicely points out whats really touching in this concept...the moment of saying goodbye and the emotion of the two. anyways, just my two cents. 'ave fun and look forward to more.

hey Posh... look very classical sketch, but your style is great... good luck and have fun:thumbsup: show very pretty women

Again, amazing personality and composition! but I think the romantic feeling of the couple conflict with the humorous girl in the bus. So maby decide on what feeling your going for IMO. Keep it up!!

Im loving the Norman Rockwell feelling of your layout.

You capture moments so well Aly. Can wait to see the next stages.

*pokes Aly* Pik-chures!

I really am adoring this scene, it fits together so well. And as many others have said here, have loved the recent Rockwell influence I've been seeing in your work. Eagerly waiting for more ;)

Nice sketches Aly. I agree with some of the others the first is a better comp...but it seems to have a bit too much "bus". I don't know...I'm sure its going to light my fire!

Any more updates?

You GOTSTA get this un finished!

I very much like the fact that the backstories of your characters fuel your work so much. It gives most of your work that I've seen a very comfortable feel - even in very rough stages. The sketches are very direct and clean... here the Rockwell comparison (for me at least) ends. I like your stuff much better.... saw a Rockwell exhibition in the flesh a couple a years ago and was deeply disappointed!

Most of his brushwork f******* *********.

I shall of course be stopping back - especially if you somehow manage to incorporate all those personalities in your original 'lover leaving' sketches - I was enjoying how all the characters stories were about to fragment.... how you keep the focus on the couple in a single frame, would indeed be interesting to find out - maybe a combo of the dynmaic bus leap and the crowd scene?

lots of love (to incorporate into the image :)

Sorry I've not been around, but I've had a couple of other jobs on, which took up all my time! And things have been very sTrAnGe at work this past week. Ask Duddlebug, he'll tell you how strange! Anyway, nearly done now, so I can get back on with this next week... and I can't wait! :)

Makaron - Thanks Mona! Of these compositions, this way round does work best, but I think it would need simplifying a bit.
FrozZT - Thankyou very much!
Beelow - Definitely a fan! Really getting into the classical American illustrators at the moment.
jsn - Thankyou! :)
bandro - You can have some.... very soon I hope!
Agamemnwn - Thankyou! I'm stiill in a bit a flux with this challenge. Going away last week and coming back to it has made me want to do something a bit tighter, and more intimate. So it may end up going the way of a closer in sketch.
ragdoll - Thyanks for that comment! :)
enialadam - Cheers Madelaine. Could go that way...
Calisto - It's there now! ;)
melkao - There has to be emotion in there, even if it's cheesy! :) Heh heh!
Artistic Visions - It's deciding where to go at the moment... bigger and more expansive or tighter and more intimate. Thankyou!
jpedro - Thankyou for that!
Ducklator - Heh! I got a girlie in somehow! ;)
rblitz7 - Decisions still to be made. Cheers!
schaal - To be honest, I don't want it to look to like Rockwell. He's part of the inspiration, but I haven't picked up oils in years! Thankyou!
erilaz - I gotta get moving. Most people are well past the concept stage now!
Elsie - comin' soon!
Sundance5000 - Hi Dan! Good to see another CA'er over here! You going to join?
Andy H - I've done some other doodles, and might post them before the end of the week, but I'm thinking other stuff as well at the moment. Cheers!
Avatarist - I envy you. I'd love to see his work up close, but I's sad to hear you weren't impressed by his brushstrokes. I guess Rockwell was a commercial artist so his work was designed for the printed page, and it's what suited at the time. They weren't really gallery art. I'd still love to see it! Thankyou for your support! :)

Thankyou for stopping by even when I'm not here! :)

Howdy Aly, yeah I've signed's a bit mind numbingly intense with the quality of artwork on this site, but it's all about pushing the limits. So we'll see how it goes!

Hey Aly, glad to hear you'll be back about soon, this piece is defintely worth carrying on with, but I know how life can get in the way of things...

05-14-2006, 07:00 PM
Thanks Beelow! It's the second one I'm not going to finish... I don't want to get a reputation or anything! :) I know I'm not alone, but it's just been a bit bonkers. No excuses. but there was a family crisis in the middle of the Challenge and I've had to find time for other priorities, which means this has had to suffer. Hopefully the next one will be pretty soon anyway!

05-15-2006, 05:25 PM
