03-06-2006, 10:24 PM
Thanks for taking the time out to reply guys,as i said in my first post,i won't be getting into this till the end of march, this will probably be my last post for a couple of weeks,i will get around to replying to everyones threads eventually, don't worry about it,i hate to see good art just drift away.
heres 7 ,8 and 9.i've gone water/lagoon crazy.
These are also my favourites of the 9 sketches.
my thoughts are....8 is the weakest of this bunch
I'm in love with 9 hehe, but infact,i don't want to use it for this challenge,i have a project goin at the moment that this would be perfect for.
7 is beautiful in my opinion,it has a wide setting, depth,i think it will be perfect for blowing up and refinement,if u stand up and look at it from a distance you will see what i mean.
All in all my faves are 2,3,7,8 and 9 (even though 9 won't be used)
I would appreciate your replies, and theres nothing wrong with disagreeing.
03-07-2006, 12:28 AM

03-07-2006, 03:58 PM
nice sketches, digging #9 in particular.
keep it coming : )
03-07-2006, 05:25 PM
since you saving nr 9 for later... my vote goes to nr 7... like the green and the water as a comp. :) the highlight to the right and the redish tones to the left is really nice to the eye.
I was wondering when you'd step up to the mic:D
Good concept. I kind of like No 7 a lot.
03-07-2006, 06:13 PM
Thankyou for your comment in my thread :D :bounce:
I really like 2,5, 7 and 9
Hi Greene! goo luck on your journey, er....challenge!!lol
cya on the road!
03-07-2006, 06:19 PM
Number 9!!! :bounce: Why won't it be used? :)
03-07-2006, 06:25 PM
Damnit i cudn't resist,challenge...too...addictive...
anywho,i basically had the idea of
sum nymphs flying down a river scattering rose petals to purify the river,a journey of purification if u will hehe... i blew up thumbnail number 7 and will basically refine if from here i already started on the rocks on the left cos i was bored.
i wanna add more figures,i just don't know where.
i'm quite confident in callin this my lineart.
03-07-2006, 06:28 PM
hey noob good to hear from you again :D i really love the sketches, nice technique..
well have a good luck, and finish this one!!!
03-07-2006, 06:31 PM

03-07-2006, 06:34 PM
Oooo you just can't resist!! :P
Great work! I quite like the composition, and the idea sounds very intriguing!
03-07-2006, 06:47 PM
You said the nymphs are purifying the river, so why not add some maliciously looking small pest who are defiling the river, kind of competitioners? ( to add figures )
Anyways, glad you're not keeping us waiting for a month to see your stuff. ^^
03-07-2006, 06:48 PM

03-08-2006, 10:34 PM
03-08-2006, 10:50 PM
I'm gonna whinge a little bit...my background is as a writer so I can't help looking at things that way. I'm wondering: how are nymphs, purifying a river, on a journey?
Maybe they do it only once a year? Purify all earths rivers in one long journey? Or maybe they're like migrating salmon, they purify till they reach home, then die? Anyway you get my drift. I would like to see something like that in the picture to make it convey a journey more.
I love all your backgrounds, am amazed at the way you make an interesting landscape with few brushstrokes. And the whole atmosphere is beautiful too. I'm subscribing! Hope you don't mind my crit.
03-08-2006, 10:57 PM
:) nebezial that actually sounds like a good idea,i'll stuff sum purps in there probably on the right .
wil n cal thanks!
Maladie, yes! exactly actually about that once a year thing, how did u know? hehe,i understand your point, its something i was thinking about too,but its not something i can put in without blatently putting a sign up in there saying *nymphs purify these waters once a year* haha
its quite difficult,if u have any suggestions on how i could put that across more clearly i'm happy to take notes.
and theres no problem criting
haha na man your pic is awesome. no crits from here. just keep pumping out the wips :D
btw sorry for being incoherent, i typed that after just having woken up.
03-09-2006, 12:39 AM
Maybe the purification each year could be linked to the seasons of a year. Like when winter passes and spring begins, a cyclus that is sure to repeat itself (lets hope, damn global warming ). If so , you could work with cold, harsch coulours and more warm, frivolous colours where the fairies have passed.
Dun really know if it would give more impression of a journey, but I think it solves the 1 year thing. Anywho, hope to see what you come up with ^^
03-09-2006, 01:55 AM
It looks like you created a good sense of movement with your line sketch, very good. Keep it coming, should come together quite good.
03-09-2006, 07:19 AM
a little bit early but the colors seems good:thumbsup:
interesting, I'm not sure what's going on at the moment but colors seem pretty nice
03-09-2006, 12:22 PM
Faras has a good point there. Maybe you could have them visibly turn winter into spring. Though that may be a bit corny:)...
Also when a once a year-event takes place, it comes in a very ritualised form. You could have some beings/folks on the side cheer them on, one fairy with a ceremonious-looking bowl of flowerleaves flying in the front, them all wearing the same ceremonial dress etc etc. Make it look like an ancient ritual. But maybe that would spoil the beautiful simplicity of your lines and image. Your perspective already conveys a journey, by the way. It's up to you!:)
Thanks very much for visiting my WIP-thread. I know I have to work on all the things you said, but I have decided to do it in the form of an (for me) interesting scene. I sketch in a dummy too (but no scanner) but practising everything in a 'dry' form just makes me want to cry:scream:. Especially perspective and comping, because that's just a brick wall to me at this point.
If I may ask, how did you learn to do such interesting thumbnails? Read a lot of art books?
03-09-2006, 01:11 PM
You all have given very helpfull thoughts,i think the only one i can consider however is the cheering people,or even waving, ordinary people in the scene.it will give the impression of a kinda festivally atmosphere.i really like the others ideas, but the cold colour thing,i just don't wanna mess around with the colours and screw up a good thing ,i have the tendacy to do that.
Maladie, thumbnails was a new thing i was trying actually,it was half inspired by baron impossibles work flow (check out his challenge thread if u can find it) i would find some ref images and basicallly take something i like from each of em and stuff them into a composition.i think i had like 10 seperate ref images for this, water, rocks, trees etc. just to get the feeling i wanted realistic.
when i say reference,i don't mean copying exactly from an image,i mean using it as exactly what it is....a reference, for example this image below inspired the water ,and the rocks on the right side of the image...
the colours of this photo really drew me in.
just gotta find where it works best.
03-09-2006, 01:27 PM
Yaay, you have started, looking good so far, rock on NOOB! :D
03-09-2006, 02:11 PM
Thanks for the tip! I can see how that could help me, because my problem is I never looked around enough when in natural environment:).
I looked at your lineart again and the big far-off rock on the right could perfectly host a vague distant crowd of people, without it getting too crowded imo. Makes me think of the end of marathons. I hope the fairies don't puke with exhaustion, or pee their pants:).
03-11-2006, 03:54 AM
Oy, again, i missed a lot on this thread too.
I like the idea of nymphs flying. it definately has the dreamlike quality to it. If you're going to add more people, then i would suggest to add a bit more space on the top of your digital canvas, so it wont feel contrap or clostophobic... unless that's what you're aiming for :D
i shall return
03-11-2006, 09:39 AM
I realy like the concept paintings you've made. Love the colours!
Same with you last image with the nymphs. I like the composition and the painting technique you used.
Good luck Nubian. This will turn out great
03-11-2006, 09:57 AM
looking cool dude :)
sorta hase an nice old school painterly feel as it is at the moment :)
and yummy colours too :)
03-12-2006, 04:18 PM
nice start! lol
How are ya? what's new. nice to challenge again with you and nebezial etc! ;)
World domination team!
03-12-2006, 04:24 PM
Quite like your colours, they're varied but it looks like they'll work. I'd try out a few quick compositions to get an idea of where you want the different elements. Hope to see an update soon ;)
03-14-2006, 03:24 AM
Wassup, slob on my NOOB!
um are you immitating the Mike Jones song Slob On My Nob? cause if you are...hahaha what a funny song!:scream:
03-14-2006, 11:49 AM
I'm not sure the journey aspect is strong enough yet in the backstory - its a nice idea, but doesn't quite fit the brief to me. Now if you got the group of fairies/nymphs sitting around a fire, chowing down on some big bad old glo-in-th-dark mushrooms.... maybe then I might realise they were off on a trip....
Nice brush work, keep it dirty.
I'll be back ... crazy man.
03-16-2006, 08:32 AM
Hi Noob! Finally have some time to browse more on the 2D part, wish you luck and fun on that piece. Cool subject, I like it:thumbsup: , but how about having a central character detaching itself from all the others on the front, maybe a smaller one like suggested in the challenge definition.
Anyway, keep that brush brushing and that arm moving hehe, will drop back for more later!
03-22-2006, 11:37 PM
This is looking pretty good! I agree about pushing the characters around. They shoudln't all be in the same plane. I would have a few figures very close to the exit at the center of the page.
05-01-2006, 10:35 AM
heres a close up of what i've been working on
05-01-2006, 10:38 AM
heres yet another close up of what i've been working on
05-01-2006, 10:39 AM
sorry its been a while guys, heres what the bg is looking like so far...
*yawn* still not even 20% done lol.
05-01-2006, 11:34 AM
hmmm wierd, saving out from painter shows more detail...

Couldn't help but be as annoying as I traditionally have been to you with your entries til date.
I like the way you have plotted most the activity along the tablo... but you just may want to move the nymph on the paintings left wing to seem a little bit bigger and outstretched.
And to pull the one at the end to sort of have a triangulated depth between the tree so far on again the paintings left side.
I did this excuse of an example to better illustrate what I mean;
This may or may not add to your composition to your liking... as a result this is just typically me again.
But it actually may help you access some more key area's to place Nymphs as you had wished to.
I am also not too sure if I liked all of the brush stroke effects... but mmm I am sure you know what you are doing and will find a way to have them better participate in it all. There is yet a lot to be worked on.
Good luck! And hope you have it in time!
05-04-2006, 08:58 AM
Hey Nubian, it's great you're back! I thought your journey had come to a standstill:). I think you are so good with colours, they emanate (?) peace and springtime. Did you work in traditional media for that? I think I see slabs of paint?
Btw it's so cool you're an animator and an illustrator. How on earth can you combine the two? It's exactly the sort of combination I want, only I've only been going for a few months.
Anyway keep this up! I think you don't want it crowded with fairies so much as have a feeling of a big event, which you might get across if you add more 'hustle and bustle' vaguely in the background - like a crowd or more fairies (but just not in the foreground).
05-04-2006, 04:08 PM
Welcome back, my nub, good luck with this, waiting for more updates!
05-04-2006, 10:50 PM
Hey Noob! Great to see you here... shame on me for not finding this thread earlier. Very interesting idea, not seen much in the way of more 'traditional' paintings from you. Will you still be adding some of those Noob surrealist touches to the image, or are you going for high fantasy?
Looking good so far... I have to say I was fond of thumb 3 for the enviroment, but I think this works nicely as a journey, with more story. Looking forward to updates.. not long left!
05-05-2006, 03:59 AM
Hey Noob, love the textures in your image. Lookin' forward to seeing the final. Good luck!
05-19-2006, 03:55 PM
Nice work on your entry.
05-25-2006, 02:03 PM
 oh well, looks like another challenge i'll be unable to finish thanks to college
