Here's my concept..

first focused on the main characters. want them to have/show movement/action, cause their Journey has just begun. They are compagnons on this trip.
The perspective is going in depth downwards and just above the fella's backpack there will be a skyline..

03-01-2006, 10:18 AM
Excellent character design and concept. Clear and efficient. Also like your 3d sketch.
Good luck

03-01-2006, 10:57 AM
That looks rad man, absolutely great characters, your style is awesome!
A boy and his doggy on a big journey, I think it's a great concept.
One thing I'm trying to figure out though, it looks like they're falling into a cliff, but the boy doesn't atleast seem concerned about it because of his big smile, or am I reading this wrong?

03-01-2006, 11:07 AM
man i always love ur line works,so clean and with confidents:thumbsup:

03-01-2006, 11:19 AM

03-01-2006, 02:41 PM
Vahn, thanx mate!

authentic, thnx a lot, cheers...

Rudeone, thank you! Well, the fella ('Ghiljy") is a hiking expert, he's been all over the world with his little compagnon 'Bullah'. He's not falling but he's jumping and turns in the air to wave quickly. He's not concerned at all, no.. (The dog) Bullah on the other hand hasn't realy gotten used to those hiking-trails yet.. :D

sh@ke, thanx for dropping by man, glad you like it so far.. :)

Sergey Banityuk, cheers mate!

Loris_, thnx! Need all the luck I can get :)

the1st_angel, Thank you! Yep! Toons is what I do best (MO), in the 'spect chall.' I made the mistake to go to realistic. So, I'm sticking to what I think I'm good at.. Toons..

beelow, Thanx buddy!

DeeVad, ahhh, appreciate it, made me  :)

Cr@sH, Thank you! ;)

W!L, Yeah? Been there? He's smiling cause he's not scared at all! He's an experianced hiker, he's not dying..:surprised
Dog isn't pleased at all, you're right. He never got used to those dangerous Journeys :argh: :)

03-01-2006, 04:42 PM

good luck

03-02-2006, 05:15 AM
A fun post to keep up with! As a positive critique it wasn't until looking at the image a third time that I finally realized the kid is belaying off a cliff rather than running down a road toward us. Maybe this is due to my own unwarranted subconscious expectations...when the background is perhaps eventually rendered with a far distant view of the ground, where a person misinterpreting it like I did would normally expect to see a horizon and clouds, the potential for such an initial misinterpretation will make your image even further engaging.

Do you have a website displaying more work? A lot of fun. Great to see.

03-02-2006, 06:57 AM
enialadam, Thnx, yes this in an exiting challenge, great topic, I suspect some great looking pieces in this contest.. :arteest:

oceanbluesky, Thanx a lot! Yeah, the little fella's jumping into the depth alright. Skyling will be there in the end, I guess just above his bagpack, been focusing on the characters so far. Cheers!

Here's my first background idea.

03-04-2006, 11:15 AM
Looks really good. Has a great sense of motion and energy to it. Looking forward to seeing more.

03-04-2006, 11:43 AM
looks good mate but is it really beggining of journey as the brief states? looks like they been hiking for a while.. i think perhaps instead of having those mountains in the back you could have the rest of the green land beneath himmsprawling abck.. possibly a village in there that he just left.. and next to him on the mountain is a sign saying 1000 miles to the top .. better said than that but you know what i mean... maybe some fireworks coming from town cheering adventurer on... ??

03-04-2006, 12:32 PM
wow great perspective and depth.I'm looking forward to seeing it's progress!

03-04-2006, 02:47 PM

Second background concept..

03-04-2006, 03:01 PM
schaal, soapy, Poonks, thank you!

DoInferno, thanx buddy!

rawwad, hiya mate! got another idea on the shelf, but think this one is pretty interesting myself, dunno yet.. cheers!

medunecer, thnx!

Elsie, 'k, here ya go, hope u like! :)

Kahlan Amnell, thank you.. I won't.

beelow, did you know I work best under pressure! :D

Poshspice, yeah I know, we'll see how that goes. hope I'll make it in time.. ;)

Nord, Always go for energy in a piece, that's the most difficult I think..

W!L, thanx a milion, bright idea! take a look now.. going for a village indeed, but he's going there, not coming from it.. thnx tho..

Velarion, cheers!

03-04-2006, 03:13 PM
Hey Michael. looking very good mate. I prefer the second background idea. Much better in my eyes.

03-04-2006, 03:31 PM
Congratulations Michael,

This work is very promising! Good lock!

03-04-2006, 03:35 PM
Michael, great concept and excellent sketch.
Keep up the good work!

03-04-2006, 03:49 PM
Wow great skills!
I really like the character!

But I dont like the background.... Mountains are boring....
Ofcourse u need a montain cause he's a mountain climber... But the range of white mountains behind is kinda boring....

03-04-2006, 06:03 PM
Ogghh!! This just keeps getting better and better!! Really like the two horizons now (both that of the mountains and the rim of the valley into which your character jumps). The grin on his face just makes it so much more perfect. Looking forward to seeing this evolve -- maybe if there were low clouds down in the valley below him through which he would fall, or if the valley were ridiculously low, outrageously dangerous,? Not to interfere with your own creative direction -- this is really great! Fantastic to see the stages through which it has gone.

03-04-2006, 06:10 PM
Hi Michael. This is coming along beautifully! Keep up the good work

03-04-2006, 07:25 PM
Hi. I was looking foward to see new steps. I think that mountains in the background are a bit too regular. Nice colors. Good luck ;)

03-04-2006, 10:57 PM
Loris_, lotaH, Art2, assafk, oceanbluesky, Gord MacDonald, Pawlack, thanx! ;)

assafk, Pawlack, I guess you guys are right 'bout the boring part, I'm working on this as I write. I placed those mountains there in the meantime, there's a lot more coming, but I reveal this pic in pieces.. thanx for the critz tho!

03-04-2006, 11:07 PM
Hehe, it is good to hear that u work well under pressure. U will be under that a lot!:D

03-04-2006, 11:09 PM
Hey again Michael, sweet looking updates! I am looking forward to seeing those updates your promising. ;)

03-04-2006, 11:45 PM
Great work Michael :bounce:
Excellent characer (as always:eek: ), but don u think that he needs some steps(stairs) underfoot to make his high jump possible?
I'm looking forward to seeing more updates
Good luck

03-05-2006, 03:24 AM
Very nice drawing! I like the energy and the composition. Keep it up!

03-05-2006, 04:33 AM
such a charming character and a great feeling of adventure!!! i like it:thumbsup:

03-05-2006, 09:29 AM
goodmorning michael .

The second background looks great and it centers more the characters so the eye just moves on them easier .great job :D

03-05-2006, 09:04 PM
beelow, lol..

mmbenya, can you please wait a little longer! Bit busy with the dayjob.. Updating soon.. :)

PSych, have you seen vertical limit? These guys make jumps of rocks, you can't imagine! So, is this little fella! He slowly tightens his fist around the rope, so he will slow down.. You know these guys! They do alot for action, they live on the edge! ;)

dvelasco, thanx a lot!

bandro, glad you like it, I'll try and keep you happy with the next update, k? :D

Jannis, that's what I thought! second one's much better, also have to thank W!L for that! Next one is getting there.. ;)

03-06-2006, 08:28 AM
I am subscribing to this too... :bounce: ...

03-06-2006, 05:51 PM
I am impressed with this peice.

While i must agree that the background mountains are quite boring. i would like to add that the general concept of this peice is very intruiging. The grin on your characters face while making that job is quite humorus while showing that he lives for this kind of action. I myself am a mountain climber so i know the rush.

Great work. Looking forward to more.

03-06-2006, 06:01 PM
Hi Michael! Wow, your second background is really an improvement. The bright green makes the two characters stand out much more (who, by the way, are great! really vivid expressions).

03-07-2006, 08:22 AM
sup mike! great stuff, nice sense of depth in your latest post!

03-07-2006, 08:45 AM
this image gonna end up with the feelin... - ops! I better hold on to something, I donīt wanna fall of the cliff- when I look at it... :)

03-07-2006, 08:59 AM
really cool characters

03-07-2006, 09:00 AM
Really like your funny character !!
You're a master !

03-07-2006, 10:22 AM
Waaaaaaaaaaaahoohoo! This height will scare even Wiley Coyote! I'm really going to keep a tab on this one!

03-07-2006, 11:01 AM
heheheeee... love that face of the dot... good luck !

03-07-2006, 12:43 PM
DimitrisLiatsos, appreciate it!

Kahlan Amnell, cheers, yeah I know, but hold on I'll post an update in 10 min or so..

Koekebakker, thanks! well, this was important in this challenge, the expression of the characters at the beginning of the Journey.

NOOB!, thanx, I'll make it even deeper I think! :)

makaron, haha! This little fella has so much confidence and experience that he has time to take his hand of the rope and wave to the viewer! ;)

grobouk, Aldebarande, thank you both!

dash2k4, pschaffi, thanx a lot!

03-07-2006, 12:50 PM

Here's an update.

changed the valley (mirrored it?) and made a path to the challenge of my little fella. The challenge for him ofcourse is to reach the top in the background, dog still isn't that happy 'bout it, he could be home happy and warm. Doggy get's cold even by looking at the mountain..

03-07-2006, 01:06 PM
hi Michael!

Great, man!

the path indicates the travel, but he start ou finish?

If he looked down, it would be going the mountain and it would be more the theme!!

Good Lock!

03-07-2006, 01:28 PM
xcellent update michael!!! This is getting better and better. Really like the path, it gives the overall concept a very entertainment "begining" of a journey!! hehhe :D
The background wouldn't be so empty though, would be?

keep up!! ;)

03-07-2006, 01:35 PM
This is looking great. I really like the characters and the composition is much stronger with this new background.

03-07-2006, 02:07 PM
yeh i'm not sure whether he is coming back from the journey or just left, hehe, its a difficult problem with this challenge,we want to draw our characters, but not the characters backs hehe, just have to be clever with it. keep it up man!

03-07-2006, 02:29 PM
He couldnīt give a jump like that towards the camera, heīs definetely going to the castle, not coming back!

This is the best background so far. It really seens like a long and difficult journey!

03-07-2006, 03:38 PM
everytime i see the expression on the little doggy it makes me smile! gogo! :bounce:

03-07-2006, 04:11 PM
lotaH, Loris_, Marco J, NOOB!, DoInferno, dunkelgold,
thanx for those nice words..

03-07-2006, 11:03 PM
great sketches michael, love the look on the dog, great landscape, very nicely done....

03-08-2006, 12:49 AM
I really dig the perspective of this piece, very dynamic. Keep it goin'

03-08-2006, 04:56 PM
Good update, those mountains really pull it together.
You had me worried for a minute there with the flat plain.

i love the style!! is soo cute!! great work! the colours, and the painting style is perfect!! :drool:keep it up mate!!

03-11-2006, 03:29 PM
This is looking great so far. :D I think the sky is a little bit too vibrant and colour saturated though.

03-12-2006, 12:30 AM
The concept is working out very well. The character with the background makes this image have movement. Good luck and keep them coming.

03-12-2006, 02:14 PM
simply 5 words absolutely very very dynamic amazing, this idea is unique and the scared dog look so funny, you know for me i loved all the landscapes but i like the snowy one with the layered rocks the most.:argh:

03-13-2006, 12:24 PM
The landscape is very good, but I think it is taking too much space in the composition.
I thought it would be more like your sketch.

03-13-2006, 12:38 PM
Ack! This is my favorite entry in both the 2D and 3D competitions but the mountains are beginning to divert attention from your main character's delimma and the valley below. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

03-13-2006, 12:40 PM
"this is my favorite entry"...unfortunately including my own.

Made another concept...
Guess this shows the beginning of a Journey, right?

03-16-2006, 04:28 PM
hehe nice. it sure does.

it remineds me a bit of Monkey Island and that guy is Herman Toothrot =P

build some more landscape and changed some colors.

03-16-2006, 08:23 PM
The emotion on the chracters is great. I'd go with the pair but I can just see that ship wreck guy talking to a volley ball :D

03-16-2006, 08:25 PM
Hi Michael....I'm sorry I havent seen this earlier. It really looks like a fun adventure and I really like the characters (especially th dog) and the perspective of the drawing. Keep up the nice work...I will surely follow this thread.

03-17-2006, 03:39 AM
wow! man! very nice 2d work you done! you are great both 2d and 3d , nice style!

03-17-2006, 07:24 AM
I really like the characters. They tell the stories themselves.

03-17-2006, 01:27 PM
beautifull update...!!the mountains fit greatly!! i love it!! cant wait till you start working on the characters!:D

03-17-2006, 11:59 PM
really a beautifull update! Love the characters, expressions on their faces, colors... But I think that if they r jumping down, u could make the boy looking at that direction. After all, everyone wants to look where they r jumping to, so it would be more real. and the second thing is the dog... if he is scared of going down, u could bring him into the first plan, going down last.. u know, like he wants to grab something at the last moment like that would help him stay on the edge :) keep up the good work!

03-20-2006, 07:55 PM
Lovin the new concept. The detail is really bringing this to life.

03-21-2006, 01:36 AM
very nice man! gudluck:thumbsup:

03-21-2006, 09:26 AM

HIMALAYAn style..!

03-29-2006, 07:03 PM
You are showing pretty strong skills here as well! You just canīt sleep, hah... Keep going.

03-29-2006, 07:10 PM

03-29-2006, 08:01 PM

03-30-2006, 04:41 AM

It's a long Journey heh?

03-30-2006, 09:52 AM
Cool... Love that Yak, and the dog seems so self satisfied... Fantastic concepts Michael.

03-30-2006, 10:36 AM
Nice Concept sketches Micheal, keep em coming!

03-30-2006, 10:43 AM
hehe great characters michael

why the smug look on the dogs face ? :D

03-30-2006, 04:09 PM
That one is really funny. Why the chicken is in jail? Because of the bird flu? XD

03-30-2006, 04:21 PM
Oh - I didn't know you where doing both challenges, and this one is faboulous too, very impressed I am :)
You have a thing for doggies it seems, this one has lots of charm just as the 3d one.

03-30-2006, 05:53 PM
Oh, I didnīt put anything in your thread,so sorry! Cool concepts and cool chicken, haha. Looking forward to watch your progress in this challenge =)

03-30-2006, 06:24 PM
but... what happend to that hen! she looks so scared. poor thing. The dog reminds me of my dog I had as a kid. She had that look when she got a ride with me on my bike. Like she owned the world :) yep, she was a bit lazy... haha... hope that you progress with this one...

03-30-2006, 06:29 PM
looks like 2 styles of toons, or 2 levels of tonishism...
my sugesiton would be to make the yak a bit more toony too. dog: funny and very toony. Hen: hilarious, great, yak, coud sow more expression in the face :)

03-30-2006, 10:04 PM
Love the idea, the expressions are just great, and the dog...the dog!
Good luck and good work mister!

03-30-2006, 11:46 PM
Haha! It seens to me that youīre going to have a hard time choosing wich concept to go to the end... Both are great! I loved the dog and the chicken!

If i were not an illustrator myself, but a writer instead i would want you to illustrate a children book of mine!

03-31-2006, 05:19 AM
yeah its totally coming along

03-31-2006, 09:02 AM
I just love the chicken! ...and the dog! and the yak (is this how it spells?). Put them on a real long journey, friend, cause they seem to enjoy it! Good luck!

03-31-2006, 01:07 PM
Grreat characters, looking forward for updates, this'll be an interesting journey

04-01-2006, 06:48 PM
I second that, great characters once again. Are you changing your whole concept now, by the way?

04-01-2006, 09:18 PM
great work - great progress

04-02-2006, 05:15 PM
Hey Mike nice work,man..I really like the characters but I do have some comments..I think the way the bull looks doesn't match the style you chose for the dog and the chicken..he needs to have more character..more exaguration maybe..And I know you've just started working on the idea but I have to make sure that you have this on your mind : Let the symbolism go somewhere..y'know..let the animals symbolize something..And if you already have that on your mind then GREAT :) good luck and looking forward to seeing where you're taking this...keep on rockin' (and I would love for you to come check out my humble work..I've made some sketches so far and any comments would really be great..)

Here's a background for a the jak-idea..

04-12-2006, 05:39 AM
Hi Michael!
Very good to see you! :) I'm delighted with your characters! They are very nice and funny! Good luck! :)

04-29-2006, 02:26 AM
Oh Michael you are in the 3D Challenge too! Ddidn't put that together -- very tallented entries in both. Hope you update and finish your 3D entry sometime too...really wonderful work (even though I can't understand why you are changing concepts so frequently...heck, I know some people who would love to start any one of them from where you left off and split the proceeds! : ) Good luck!

04-29-2006, 05:31 AM
Great colours in this last one, truly captures one's imagination.

05-05-2006, 12:02 PM
I'd like to thank everybody for supporting while it lasted..
I'm sorry to say I think I won't be able to finish, the job is holding me back with the always anoying deadlines and those last weeks I'm working on a big project that's takin' all my spare time too... So, hope to be back in time.. but if I'm not, please don't shoot me!
Thanx again for the words and support! ;)
