So I came up with a few ideas which will more than likely become the foundations for my entries:

The first revolves around the basic premise of robots who are tired of being treated like servants. They yearn for the same rights and privileges as human beings and decide to escape a world of servantry for a chance at a better life. I have this idea of a few robots hiding in a background ready to jump at the opportunity to become stowaways on a spacecraft in some sort of intergalactic backdrop.

The second revolves around a race theme. I have a few ideas for this oneÖ I thought maybe doing a spin on the cardboard race car set in the future where kidís have these pimped out high-tech racers, or maybe a throwback to the old turtle and the hare race. Kinda luke warm on those but I see myself gravitating toward the irony of a rat race, with rats dressed as humans waiting for a gun to go off.

The third and last idea is a take on little red riding hood. I thought about having her standing in front of a huge dark forest in the bg with and a shadowy figure of a wolf in the immediate foreground. I think visually I can pull something off really nice with this but itís not a very original theme.

So thatís it. Since Iím entering both the 2D and 3D challenges Iíll more than likely split the robot theme into 3D and whatever I decided for the other into 2D.

I probably wonít start sketching stuff until this weekend but any ideas or suggestions as to which of the above concepts you feel are the strongest are appreciated. Thanks everyone and if I havent said so already, good luck!- J

03-03-2006, 03:04 AM
Some good ideas man, think I'm going to try and tackle the 5d thang too. Good luck and God bless.
A2 and B2 seem like you could do alot with them

03-03-2006, 03:32 AM

I finally got some time to work on my 3D concept art. The idea I have is to create a scene involving a scientist either putting the finishing touches on a time machine or have him inside the machine, seconds away from his first departure.

This concept sketch doesnt exactly follow the challenge guidelines but it will serve as my reference for the image's overall feel.

I plan on using zbrush to create the majority of this piece and I will probably start modeling after a couple of more sketches for the time machine design.

03-04-2006, 07:56 AM
Wow, thats an amazing sketch!!

03-04-2006, 08:00 AM
i noticed you have the same entry for both 2D and 3D...

probably just a mix-up...

very nice concept tho!

03-04-2006, 08:25 AM
u rocks there and here too, nice

03-04-2006, 08:54 AM
Great sketch (if that's just a sketch...!)! It'd be nice to see this one in 3D, but as another person said you used the same image for 2D =/... perhaps you haven't made up your mind yet? ;)

Joel said on 2d forum:

Another concept. I was back and forth on this one but I've decided to roll with it for the 3D piece. I have a few more ideas which I might sketch out but I think I'm pretty certain as to what I will be doing for the 2D piece. I'll post that one next. - J

Mecha LOVE Chimp!
Great work dude! I really dig the sketch. So far it looks a little sterile or like a museum or something. I don't know what you are going for but maybe a work station or desk would add a bit to the scene?

Keep up the good work.

03-04-2006, 10:04 AM
an amazing concept sketch.:applause: Don't you want to go to 2D challenge? Ok, it was a joke, I just wanted to turn down a competitor... :D Great concept, waiting for your 3D work!

03-04-2006, 10:37 AM
Wow, the time machine concept is looking great. I think the simplicity of the room works really well for this. Looks really ominous with the long banners and small windows to finish the room.

I really like this composition.:)

03-04-2006, 11:34 AM
One of the best concept sketches I've seen so far, wish I had that sorta 2d talent ;)
This is deffinately a thread to watch.

03-04-2006, 11:37 AM
ok... your sketch looks like a final image to me - WOW.:scream:

03-04-2006, 11:41 AM
Yes amazing sketch there, love the ambience, this image in 3d could really rocks :buttrock:

03-04-2006, 11:52 AM

nice sketches and interesting story so far... ...oh btw hello & welcome to the challange :)

03-04-2006, 12:18 PM
Wow, coool idea, rescuing the essence of the time travels

03-04-2006, 08:47 PM
Beautiful lighting! I like the muted colors, maybe a couple of little colored lights in the machine would look nice? Interesting how the concept is journey, and yet the scene is so static, almost contemplative. Feels a bit like heīs in a very quiet museum or an old europpean medical college. Good luck!

03-05-2006, 12:45 AM
After looking at your concept I am asking myself if 3d version can possibly devastate my ego even more... yaw on the floor...

Somehow this concept makes me think about Vermeer- light, pavement... colours are not in his style but rest fits perfectly.

03-05-2006, 05:29 PM
Hey nice sketches, the last one has really good mood and atmosphere. Cheers, good luck.

Took some time today to sketch out another idea for a layout. Im not really digging it too much but I think Im on the right track. The most difficult part for me will be conveying emotion on the character's face so I might go for an even closer shot next and just try to tackle it head on.

03-06-2006, 07:11 AM
The sketch looks great. Maybe the character is dominating the space though, so the journey idea takes a second place.

A question: Are you using ZB for your 2D entry also?

03-06-2006, 07:24 AM
Like always Joel, your sketching skills are great!

Keep it up:)

03-06-2006, 08:19 AM
Oh my...! ...this is amazing...i can't just call it sketch.. :) ...Beautiful and very J.Vernes style look...Argh...5Ders are a dangerous species.. :D .
Great idea man (in 2D also)....

Subscribing on this journey .

Got around to modeling a low poly figure in zbrush today. It's going a little slow for me with both challenges but I'm looking forward to knocking out some work over the weekend.

03-17-2006, 09:33 AM
Nice ZBrush base mesh.

03-19-2006, 07:52 AM

Dinking around still as I try to get my head around modeling in zbrush.

My boy Ig suggested I try tech-ing out the scene a bit to make it look a little more futuristic and maybe make the guy in the labcoat help a cosmonaut put on a suit in front of the time machine. I wasnt digging on it at first but it grew on me the more I thought about it. It would definitely help give the impression that a journey is about to happen, or atleast more so than in the previous concept sketches I put together. Suffice it to say, I think its an excellent idea.

03-31-2006, 08:01 AM
the cosmonaut dress might possibly help but since your construction is a closed unit its not quiet much required :) if he's planing to travel trough time, he will most propably stay in the capsule until he arrives. and in case he lives in a future where timetraveling is reality, he might have materials andd a design for it that are away a bit from what nasa uses today :) you are such a talent when it comes to sketching, i'd love to see you develop a kick ass design in 2d first to get a clear idea of what zbrush will be used for. hehe. rockem all mate, keep up the pace. looking forward to this with great expectations, go go go:bounce::bounce::bounce: !

04-13-2006, 11:40 PM
You better cut that out Joel, you're making me look bad. Here you are busting out two entries, and I don't even have one :scream::):D The cosmonaut kind of threw me off a bit . . . but I don't have anything to say really, so instead I'll just sign up to keep tabs on your progress.

BTW, what's with you and turtles? :p

04-14-2006, 07:11 AM
Heya Joel, :)

I've been completely remiss in terms of keeping up with the Challenge (I've totally slacked myself, but I blame the Workshop) :curious: ;) ~ ha, no, of course that took first priority, but it's nice to be able to check in and see how everyone is doing on their entries ~ great stuff, looks like things are well underway! :)

Best of luck, heh, looks like you finished your 2D entry in no time flat! ;)
