03 March 2006, 06:18 AM (

So I came up with a few ideas which will more than likely become the foundations for my entries:

The first revolves around the basic premise of robots who are tired of being treated like servants. They yearn for the same rights and privileges as human beings and decide to escape a world of servantry for a chance at a better life. I have this idea of a few robots hiding in a background ready to jump at the opportunity to become stowaways on a spacecraft in some sort of intergalactic backdrop.

The second revolves around a race theme. I have a few ideas for this oneÖ I thought maybe doing a spin on the cardboard race car set in the future where kidís have these pimped out high-tech racers, or maybe a throwback to the old turtle and the hare race. Kinda luke warm on those but I see myself gravitating toward the irony of a rat race, with rats dressed as humans waiting for a gun to go off.

The third and last idea is a take on little red riding hood. I thought about having her standing in front of a huge dark forest in the bg with and a shadowy figure of a wolf in the immediate foreground. I think visually I can pull something off really nice with this but itís not a very original theme.

So thatís it. Since Iím entering both the 2D and 3D challenges Iíll more than likely split the robot theme into 3D and whatever I decided for the other into 2D.

I probably wonít start sketching stuff until this weekend but any ideas or suggestions as to which of the above concepts you feel are the strongest are appreciated. Thanks everyone and if I havent said so already, good luck!- J

03 March 2006, 06:21 AM
Great thumbs! I love your style Mecha, so this will be fun to watch! :D

Overchord - Thanks Jens, likewise!

Elsie - Hi Alisa, good luck as well!

FrozZT - Thats my aim! :D

NinjaASSN - Thanks Blaz!

erilaz - Thanks Martin!

03 March 2006, 06:50 AM
nothing like brainstorming. Keep at it my friend

03 March 2006, 06:52 AM
Great thumbs joel.

I agree with u about putting the robots in the 3d challenge seams more fit. I like the race theme very much especially the rabbit and turtle race :D

03 March 2006, 07:46 AM
Love the style, good thumbs..

I like the middle one, only thing I would let them go away from the viewer instead of towards it.. So you can make an gigantic racecircuit in the distance, maybe even so far, it kinda disolves in the distance.. I'll be watching ya!

03 March 2006, 08:41 AM (

Another idea,

I kinda like the way this one is going. I'll throw a couple more sketches up over the next few days. -J

03 March 2006, 08:44 AM
Ow! My jaw just hit the floor! Awesome job Mechsta!

03 March 2006, 08:44 AM
I'm really liking the way this is shaping- great values and mood going on there. I can tell it's gonna turn out well. I'd like to see some more of the guy though and some suggestion of a journey. Right now he looks like he's there for a spot of fishing.

Good luck and have fun!

03 March 2006, 08:49 AM
ow hi man!
glad u entered this challenge too!

that is an awesome sketch u got there.

03 March 2006, 08:52 AM
whoa~great sense of mood my friend:)remember about depicting an emotion for the character.looking forward for more

03 March 2006, 08:53 AM
Niiiice atmosphere there Joel, can't wait to see this one develop! The colours are gorgeous...very tranquil yet the dominant greys and steel blue makes it rather uneasy at the same time

03 March 2006, 09:05 AM
Yeah, I like the mood of the latest one as well. This idea can support a lot of attention to details and I think it has potentials!!

03 March 2006, 09:29 AM
nice start. good to see you here :wip: :D

03 March 2006, 09:45 AM

Definetly get a feel like there's a certain something ABOUT to happen.

03 March 2006, 12:43 PM
Veeery nice mood in that concept... Looking forward to more! (and have to agree that the little red riding hood-esque idea is a bit un-orginal but it can still be a powerfull piece)

03 March 2006, 02:19 PM
Great concept, I like the mood you've created.

03 March 2006, 02:24 PM

03 March 2006, 02:26 PM
man, that second sketch already looks like a finished moodboard. How long does that take you?
the mood of that one is beautiful, but I wonder how you would indicate a biginning of a journey?
Ride on!

03 March 2006, 04:24 PM
excellent composition. Waiting for more details.
Maybe more light from the top for more mystery ??

03 March 2006, 04:40 PM
Hey Joel! Great start mate, I like idea and atmosphere, Good luck friend!

03 March 2006, 07:57 PM
SheeshÖIím surprised and flattered that this sketch has received as much attention as it has.:p It was done in just over an hour, but itís definitely not what I plan on moving forward with.

The difficulty of this challenge is definitely proving itself as I have had to seriously think about how to incorporate all the elements that are expected for the final image. On top of this, Iím going to attempt to do both the 2D and 3D challenges, making it a bit more difficult. Iím up for it though and I think this type of pressure is what I need to motivate me to work faster and more efficient.

Iíve had time the last few days to come up with what I think are some really cool ideas which will follow the challenge guidelines a bit more accurately. Thanks everyone for the wonderful compliments and crits and Iíll be posting some more sketches over the weekend. Thanks again! - J

03 March 2006, 09:45 PM
Even at this early stage, it looks like you already nailed the mood. Looking forward to more refined versions. I have always been a fan of your work. So good luck. I'll continue to drop by. Dont be a stranger now.

03 March 2006, 07:56 AM (

Another concept. I was back and forth on this one but I've decided to roll with it for the 3D piece. I have a few more ideas which I might sketch out but I think I'm pretty certain as to what I will be doing for the 2D piece. I'll post that one next. - J

03 March 2006, 06:52 PM
The best design and ambiant I ver seen for a time machine. This "sketch" ( I would say "painting" ) is really beautifull. The soft light / the tiles on floor...all is good.

03 March 2006, 07:02 PM

What him ^^^ say. The moodiness of this one is fantasitc.

03 March 2006, 07:12 PM
:p You're gonna hate me for that but i think that concept its static and without a strong feeling on it, its a little bit boring

dont take me bad its my opinion to encourage you ok

03 March 2006, 07:26 PM
bandro :p You're gonna hate me for that but i think that concept its static and without a strong feeling on it, its a little bit boring

dont take me bad its my opinion to encourage you ok

Hey bandro, you're may be right and I respect your feeling, but don't you think that this static composition represent as well the concentration & loneliness to scientist who try this machine , lost between link and book ? For me , this sketch is a "must".

03 March 2006, 07:32 PM
Bloody hell matey....thats awesome!

And what a journey that guy is taking!!:bounce:

03 March 2006, 07:43 PM

yeah but where its the "journey" theme?

03 March 2006, 10:48 PM
Mecha, I think this is a great concept that you should go with. Personally, I like the lonely intellectual solitude of the piece. It's the calm before the time-storm, so-to-speak.

You may have this already in mind, but some miscellaneous lab equipment, maps, books (history and science) and other artifacts could further define the piece.

In any case, amazing work!!!

03 March 2006, 10:52 PM
Excellent, especially the composition and atmosphere. How to make it look more like a time machine, though...?

03 March 2006, 11:15 PM
Joel, yur work has improved phoniminally dude, Great sketch dude, I am honored to be watching the strength of ur work unveil dude, utmost respect from me!

03 March 2006, 03:02 AM
Awesome sketch man. Love the mood of the latest one. Values are superb, looks so realistic.

03 March 2006, 09:36 AM
Goodmorning Joel,

Very nice idea about the time machine . I love the mood of the image and the contrast colors :D great job

03 March 2006, 10:51 AM
man.. if those r just sketches, than please stop participating in this challenge.. breathtaking! love the ambient and feeling u caught there on a last one (as well as on the first one ofcors :)) Please, post more sketches, I'd like to see some more great art..

03 March 2006, 08:21 AM
Yup...i love too the time machine mood...but i must confess that i like also the prev one with the man in that moody dark woods :) .

God many talented people in here... :argh:

Have fun Joel.

03 March 2006, 11:05 AM
Wow; this new concept is really cool and original. Pay just attention to make it clear to understand and readable. But, wow, so cool composition and lighting.

03 March 2006, 04:43 PM
I am liking the second one mightily, but the only problem is...there is no suggestion of a journey in it...

Sorry to throw water over this.. Maybe you could have bags packed beside him, like he's taking the thing with him to a world fair type of event in order to show it off?

03 March 2006, 12:08 AM
Your newest concept, the time machine, looks awesome. You nailed the lightning effects, one of the most dynamic entries I've seen so far, in terms of color and lightning. Keep it going, you should do great if you continue working at this level.

03 March 2006, 11:19 AM
Beautiful painting on all your concepts so far. I think that the mixture of opinions coming about the time machine piece reflects an important feature of the brief. It is beautifully executed work, but perhaps is lacking another dimension (Time, in this case :) to truly describe (without background text) that a journey is imminent...

Looking forward to being part of the crowd here - drooling on your every WIP. :D

03 March 2006, 07:43 AM (

I finally had some time to sit down and work on a concept for my 2D entry. Influenced by the movie "Hidalgo", I decided to make an image of a race across the desert on horseback. I'm still working out the details but the final image will be close to what you see here.

03 March 2006, 07:53 AM
It's really a powerfull picture, and I like you said the final rendering will be close of what we see. I found it important to have this sketch feeling, and you are one of the best of this way to do, so don't hesitate. In other point, I see that judge like the technical sometimes more than the living brushed style. May be it's cause never a real good one was proposed ? To do this is a risk, but I know you do the 3D one , best medium to show technics. ahhh ! so complete artist, you made me jealous !
Keep this one, I really like it :).

03 March 2006, 09:44 AM
woohoo ... rock on mecha! a powerful sketch with really nice brushwork

i love it. One crit tough ... its not very clear, that a journey begins here :wise:

cheers m8

03 March 2006, 11:30 AM
Beautiful Mecha, just beautiful. You've really captured a wonderful essence of adventure and power.

03 March 2006, 12:01 PM

03 March 2006, 12:45 PM
great layout! :surprised

03 March 2006, 04:18 PM
"It's all for show little brother"
Well, if you go with this one I will be a little sad to see the time machine one go by the way side. And I don't know why some people couldn't see it as the start of an epic journey... going back in time can be adventurous, dangerous, and unpredictable. But I think it had a very nice quality to it...reminded me a bit of a Vermeer painting.
Anyways, I say all this not to say that your current one isn't nice. Because it does have some nice things going for it as well. My advise to you about it would be to change it more and do some research. Currently, it looks a bit too much like the movie (pose, costumes, etc). Try looking up arabian costume. There is a lot of variety there. Also, I would suggest making the horses truely arabians, not just generic. So you might want to look up Arabian breed for specs on that.
Just some thoughts. :)

03 March 2006, 05:38 PM
This last concept looks fantastic!
Can't wait for more.. ;)

03 March 2006, 06:52 PM
PLEASE do the time machine one! You CAN have the same concept for both 2d and 3d as long as they look different (and they do). I love the ambience in that one and when you brought up the new concept, even though it's cool (and it is!), I still screamed internally 'NOooo! He MUST do the time machine one!'

So now you know my thoughts anyway. :D

Edit: I'll tell you my reasons. That one has a feeling of some antiquity in it, a wonderful quiet atmosphere, very enigmatic and it really draws the viewer into wondering what's going on in here...where is he going... and such an atmosphere is perfect for storytelling.

03 March 2006, 07:08 PM
excellent form and sense of motion here -- the image really makes you feel like you're rinding alongside. wonderful colors and texture, too.... looking great!

03 March 2006, 07:21 PM
the final image will be close to what you see here.

and it will also be very likely to make me wet my pants when it's finished.:wise:

03 March 2006, 07:31 PM
that is stunning mate..

03 March 2006, 07:58 PM
Hi All,

Thank you for all the wonderful comments and crits!:)

At the risk of disappointing a few, I think for the sake of time and sanity, Iím pretty sure Iíve made up my mind as to which concepts I will use for the challenges.

For me, the hardest part so far has been trying to come up with ideas that would make good concepts for my entries. Itís also important for me to create completely different concepts for each submission, not just because of the challenge guidelines, but because I do enjoy the idea of bouncing back and forth between two different worlds. If I was not doing the 3D challenge, I would more than likely use the time machine concept for my 2D submission. I just think overall it would make for a very interesting 3D piece and I plan on staying as close to my original concept as best as I can. Taking into consideration that I am attempting to do both a 2D and 3D entry, I also need to accommodate my abilities if I am going to finish the challenge in the time allotted. I am a newbie when it comes to 3D (which is a huge challenge in itself) so Iím trying to stick with a concept that I believe my limitations can handle, and I think the time machine is better suited for it.

I really do like the idea of a race in the desert as a 2D piece and I believe itís a concept that I can do a lot with visually. Iím aiming for a very cinematic shot and even though itís still in the early stages, Iíll be posting different sketches for layout and overall composition in the upcoming weeks.

This challenge is definitely pushing my abilities as an artist already as I try to incorporate my ideas while trying to adhere to the demands of the guidelines. Thanks everyone again for all your comments and critiques. Although I may not respond individually to each and everyone one, please know that I do take them all into consideration.

03 March 2006, 09:54 AM
that's pretty damn cool work... very well done horses and movement

03 March 2006, 03:50 PM
Cool dude! I will be keeping a close eye on this thread good luck!

03 March 2006, 07:51 PM
Wow ! Great doode ! I love it !keep it this way !

Good luck ! I'll keep an eye on ya !:scream:

03 March 2006, 07:49 AM
your sketch got everything it takes for a good piece and the roughness of it is like a final touch no technical excellence will make better. you got here a most beautifull piece, fast dynamic with a sense of movement that is simply unbelievable. keep your final piece working up this way and you will stick out of the mass of technical perfectionists that try to achieve photorealism at all price and kill the pieces... with simple raw power of the very essence of painting: feeling.
love your sketch, one of the stongest works i seen around yet. rock on!

03 March 2006, 04:56 PM
I second what Sacha just said!
It certainly looks complete as it is.

04 April 2006, 07:26 AM
Hi Joel,

Could you put your reference photos here as well? I would be also very interested in process of your work, you know, things about software used, brushes, tones, lighting, etc.
Don't get me wrong, i'm not telling you cheated or something, i'm actually totaly blown away by this horsemen. And i'm into photorealistic painting too, so that's why i wonder how other people work...
And, by the way, i think it's a very wise decision NOT to do a Sci-Fi scene; that's when it gets really hard to nail the viewer to the image without all that bling-bling...
Get some updates soon, bro.

Best regards and big respect

Khan alias Chupacabra

Hi Kan,

Thank you for the compliments :)

There are a lot photos I used as reference to build up the image but the one I would say that inspired me the most was the actual Hidalgo Poster (

As far as brushes go, I generally use the ones available on Barontieri's site ( (you can download them at the bottom of the page). I use maybe one or two custom brushes that Ive created on my own but I find that the Barontieri brushes are very well rounded and suited for just about anything.

Ive been in a rut the last couple of weeks mainly on the 3D challenge because its so time consuming. As the challenge keeps progressing I may or may not use this as my final theme for the 2D entry... Im just trying to get the 3D thing down without losing my mind. Once I feel like I have most of my work done there, I will come back to the 2D entry.

Hey Joel, I just stumbled on your 2D entry. I must say . . . holy crap dude, those are some awesome concepts. I'm a little sorry that you didn't go with the man in the woods one, but I can see why you'd might not want to do it for this challenge. I hope that you get a chance to finish it though, I really like the moody atmospherics that you were able to invoke within such a short time.

I like the composition in the desert race, and your stylized but believable technique works well. However, I kind of wish there was a way you could give a sense that this is the beginning of something larger, and not just a romp in the desert. Also, the front rider seems a little static . . . maybe giving him a more aggressive stance like the back rider migh help give a more dramatic flair to the piece.

I don't want to give you the wrong impression though, I really like where this piece is headed. But as we talked about over brewskies yesterday, there's nothing worse to an artistic career than a yes-man, so those are my crits :scream:

I hope you rock this thing out, it's got a great start! And now I must hop over to your 3D entry . . .

Joel, I really think you should reconsider dropping out- your concept is great and with just a little effort you could probably end up one of the winners!

HAhaha... thanks guys :)

paperclip: wish I could bro. My heads just not in it anymore. I definitely would like to finish at the very least the Time Machine concept but its more work right now than I can handle.

Im trying to get a portfolio ready for my trip to Cali next month. Between me squeezing out some new work for the trip and making time for other work/hobbies, theres just not enough time on my plate to get a finished piece completed in time. If and when I get any of these concepts done, I'll definitely post them in the finished section. Thanks again for the encouragement and kind words :) - J
