Hello! Here is an early concept sketch for this challenge. Changes may apply in future progress.

The whole idea is to depict mankinds journey to ensure our survival for the future by venturing to neighboring planets in search of possible chances to expand. Namely the Mars expedition, but the main focus is the 'Mission Patch' on the astronauts arm which says "For All Mankind" which was inspired by the movie "Armageddon".

It struck me as both heroic and romantic. I'll leave the translating to you. :)

sorry double post... and while im editing, thanks flamingbs! i'll do my best!

Oooh, looks really nice! Great composition, and the patch on his arm really adds to the feeling. Looking great, can't wait to see it in 3D!

Did you see where it said "It is recommended that entrants focus on physically small characters....in a foreground setting against a vast backdrop of epic proportions (by comparison)."

Can I ask how you plan to make your character look physically small an the backdrop look suitably vast in comparison?

Also, what about being brave and dropping the stars and stripes and putting a more appropriate flag there (considering you're including the "for all mankind" patch)?

Just some ideas...

03-01-2006, 05:23 AM
Regarding the flag, that part is what I was (and still am) working on. A custom designed flag that would replace the American flag that I have for now. I knew it wouldn't make much sense to be country specific if it's for "All Mankind" but a custom design is in the works and will soon take it's place in the pole.

As for

"It is recommended that entrants focus on physically small characters....in a foreground setting against a vast backdrop of epic proportions (by comparison)."

If you think about it, we humans are dwarfed by such a vast universe. Hence the idea. You could say it's viewing it in a more philosophical way rather than literally and probably doesn't do the topic justice. :D

I suppose if I gave it a different perspective, where the astronauts are dwarfed by the orbiter, but then I'd be faced with the challenge of getting the message "For All Mankind" across to the viewers. Well as mentioned, changes will be made as I progress.

Thanks for pointing those out! Very much appreciated!

I'll make you proud! :D

Good luck with your concept ! Roman.

03-01-2006, 06:58 AM
I like the idea. I think giving it a lower perspective so you're looking up at the shuttle would be a more dramatic approach. Maybe the stars and the darkness of space could be slightly visible at the apex of the sky? And I would use a more modern design on the shuttle

Or better yet design your own.

Good luck!

Granted, this is the 1st sketch, but I'm not really digging the way the flagpole divides the composition. Some have sugested a "looking up" compostion. that could work with a night shot (vast starfield background) with the ship illuminated by spotlights, and the emblem painted on the wing.

If you really wanted to use a flag, you could do like the UN building and use a dozen nations' flags instead of trying to design one for all.

hope that helps! good luck!

So I went back to the drawing board and this time around sticking to the suggested recommendations of using "physically small characters" hence the use of ants.

Hope the message comes across clearly without the need to translate. =]

I wanted to finish the model before I posted it, but it's getting late and it's been a while since I posted any updates so here's what I have so far. His head and bum are still missing, after that, just a few more details here and there and he's good to go... =]

that's looking pretty good so far! Really nothing to crit on the model so far. I like your updated concept too. Picnic raid! :wip:

03-05-2006, 04:53 PM
No better journey than headed someplace with ginormous food!

Mmmmmmmmm! FoooooooOd!

03-05-2006, 06:12 PM
wow! nice concept! thank you for stoopin by my thread!! :D :D

03-05-2006, 08:00 PM
uh, new concept. that's fun ! ... modeling looks good so far. I only suggest to show the picnic as something really delicious, so the ants are doing BIG journey to get BIG meal.
sorry for my english, I hope you know what I mean.

Itís looking good so far, ragdoll. I like his torso and the way youíve attached his legs. Once he gets his tail/bum it should add a lot to the design.

Your bug is cool

I`m looking forward to see more :bounce:

Nice - I like your new concept a lot more than the first. Here you have a chance to be truly original. It could be interesting to somehow show a great expanse of desert/river - whatever it is in the background that these ants are about to traverse... to somehow convey the idea that these ants - tho they're depicted big - feel very small in their surroundings...

Looking forward to more concept development...

calisto - thanks for stopping by too! i'll be keeping track of your progress!

Grin3d - hey roman thanks for the suggestion! the picnic basket is going to be far away, suggesting a long journey up ahead, but i'll try to keep a level of detail making it a trip worth risking!

Hoju - thanks! im trying to make it as detailed as possible so that there's more to see when finalized. beauty is in the details!

Nomad - thanks man! same goes for me with your work!

LisaT - Hi Lisa! Thanks for stopping by! :wavey:
The reason for showing them as "normal" size is to show facial expression, the dwarfing part will come from the giant grass blades, giant mushrooms, giant dead leaves, and if you look at my sketch, there's also a giant penny on the left side, or so I think it is. :D I'll make you proud! :wavey:

school hasn't been friendly with me for the past couple of days. i've been stuck doing pointless projects that would never serve its purpose on this planet. week of hell plus i had 3 wisdom teeth extractions. that was the fun part! ^_^ massive blood loss and all! then followed by the flu. =[

well even after all that, i still managed to get stuff done for the challenge which i've placed on hold for sometime now. i see that im not too far behind from everyone else but i still have a long way to go.

anyway, this is the final character model. he went thru a couple of changes, namely the antena, bum, and head/facial area. threw in some details here and there and tadaaah! =]

meet Grasshopper! he's an ant... i just decided to name him that cause i can. enjoy! =]

03-12-2006, 08:28 PM
nice concept & character
looking for more... .. .

03-13-2006, 02:45 AM

wintermute: yeah progress at last! :p thanks! i'll keep at it! :wip:

03-13-2006, 04:22 AM
Sorry to hear about your bad fortune. Youíve managed to do a lot in spite of it though. I like it that he has nice big eyes, and I look forward to when you texture him.;)

03-13-2006, 02:38 PM
I hope there are no more problems for you now. Your ant is looking great. There is a long journey to reach the basket, keep it up!

03-13-2006, 04:02 PM
your on the right track now with the bug/ant idea. A lot of entries are getting the idea/concept confused or forgetting about it all together. A well planned start means a great ending- well most of the time. :D

03-14-2006, 04:39 PM
hey man,
