03 March 2006, 03:11 PM
Hey there,

Great concepts, love the different atmospheres that you create in each of them. I especially enjoy the top left one, middle right and bottom right.

Matt :)

03 March 2006, 03:32 PM
Hiya! Welcome to challenge, I'm really liking the thumb sketches. My best wishes to you in the challenge

03 March 2006, 03:57 PM
Hi, personaly I like the top left one. I think it shows they are on a jouney and their destination is clear.
Good luck with it.

03 March 2006, 04:01 PM
hey! Very nice concept! It's a good start! Good luck!

03 March 2006, 04:08 PM
I forgot... As mike_t_3d, I like the first one.

03 March 2006, 04:28 PM
wow, great concepts! Good luck stefan!

03 March 2006, 05:58 PM
Hey Stefan,

I like your concept sketches  . I personally think the strongest sketch is the top left image the best . Look forward to more wip's

03 March 2006, 06:03 PM
top left and bottom right

Matt -

03 March 2006, 06:51 PM

03 March 2006, 08:12 AM
i agreed with matt~the top left is my fav:)the one in the middle right is prety cool in the compositional value. goodluck mate and thanks for the post in my thread

Liquid Monkey Brain
03 March 2006, 02:46 AM
They all look great to me, Stefan.

03 March 2006, 03:22 AM
Nice concept sketches dude! good luck with ur entry!

03 March 2006, 03:27 AM
I like your atmospheres aswell, options are great.

03 March 2006, 08:06 AM
Nice start, I like all of them. One with the flying boat is verry intriging :curious:

Good luck and have fun

03 March 2006, 08:53 AM
I agree with nomad, the flying boat looks the best. But keep going if you haven't reached that "place" :D

03 March 2006, 11:05 AM
I Do like the Top left for composition,
but to me it says
"we are almost there"
rather than "we are heading off".

03 March 2006, 11:05 AM
nice atmospheres you heve here.:)

cheers alvin

03 March 2006, 11:09 AM
Beautiful concepts! I personally like top right most. Interesting foreground elements and nice tilting.:thumbsup:

Good luck to you!

03 March 2006, 03:43 PM (

another series of concepts,I want to get some kind of grand future city in here somewhere & haven't put much effort into foreground figures as of yet,

03 March 2006, 03:46 PM
attached todays sketches for the background
Top left seems to be well received & I also felt it was the best for telling a story..I like the forground elements but the whole image idea seems a bit cliched to me..I really like the colour options in the 3rd one..a future city over a desrt landscape would be cool.

however in keeping with the story I've been thinking of..
..a scrap yard for old robots, with a few 'bots making a hole in the fence & preparing for freedom..I can sneek my grand city behind the fence as a symbol of the journey they are about to embark on :)..& making a bunch of old grungy bots will be fun..

more updates soon

thanks for all the comments so far, there's a massive amount of quality entries in this challenge.

03 March 2006, 04:01 PM (

I have a story..
set in a derelict scrap yard filled with old robots,a small band of 'bots have found/created a hole in the fence & are preparing for a journey out into the city beyond the walls of the scrap yard.

03 March 2006, 05:12 PM
Nice concept and environnement work so far, taking a seat here, good luck !:)

03 March 2006, 08:18 PM

Hi Stefan,

really nice sketches you created there! I wish I could do like this :)

03 March 2006, 09:02 AM
Nice sketches, I like that simple and 'cute' little robots idea, it will look great showing all kinds of robots that come out of your mind! Personally following this one :)

03 March 2006, 12:55 PM
I really enjoy watching the series of concepts you have for this theme. most likely your work will have a great impact on the competition.
looking forward for your next steps.

03 March 2006, 02:05 PM
Great sketches. Knowing the rate that you knock stuff out, you should have this done in a day or two ... LOL ... I'll be watching.

03 March 2006, 03:31 PM (

another character concept.

03 March 2006, 03:34 PM (

The first stage of modeling will be the characters, these will help to define the look of the city.modeling in 3dsMax

03 March 2006, 05:12 PM
I really like the design of your robot..already has a lot of expression, good job

03 March 2006, 05:17 PM
Nice start on bringing them into the third dimension mate! Thos eyebrows are going to be a godsend for conveying the emotion! Maybe compliment them with a set of slopy half closed eyelids?

03 March 2006, 05:25 PM
Looks just a great start, nothing to crit

03 March 2006, 05:29 PM
Het there Stefan!
robot is looking good so far, nice looking style you have.
*subscribes* :)

03 March 2006, 05:34 PM
thanks for all the comments  ..much appreciated

Crin,I like the eyelid idea, would add a bit more character for sure :)..the eyeball(pupil) in the GI render is hidden behind what will be a glass covering..I can't wait to start dirtying this guy up with some textures

3D_Explorer..hopefully my frantic pace can see me through to the end, hehe ! ..good luck with yours too Ray

03 March 2006, 05:50 PM
Excellent start!

Nice idea too. I can't wait to sse the texturing.

03 March 2006, 06:43 PM

03 March 2006, 04:46 PM
Hey there Stefan, your character has a lot of expression! You did a great job capturing the look and feel that you have in your concept. Thanks for showing your wires, you did a very nice and clean job on modeling him.

Matt :)

03 March 2006, 05:07 PM (

modelling the first character,

03 March 2006, 05:12 PM (

Some testing on the textures for the first character, using textures created in Photoshop as blend & rust maps.

03 March 2006, 05:19 PM
Man I just love your models.
You and a coule of other guys here make me totally jelous with your modeling skills.
If I were rich I would have you guys model all my stuff.

Keep up the great work!

03 March 2006, 05:19 PM
The mini iron giant, i love it

Superman :)

a busy day today..
modeling is nearly finished on the first character, need to fix the hands & feet & some other small details,I'm uv mapping as I model so texturing can also take place at the modeling stage,

mmbenya..the wires look a bit heavy in the last shot,I might cull out some edges before this one is done.

looking forward to your C&C

03 March 2006, 05:21 PM
Looks like bender in his teen years. :scream: :D

great update!

03 March 2006, 06:54 PM
Nice! One small suggestion, I love the texturing, test, but maybe include larger patches where the paint is still intact. THis would indicate the the wear on the paint is from use on specific parts as oppose to there being wear throughout the paint on the whole body.

Just a suggestion.

Brilliant model so far!

03 March 2006, 06:55 PM
Looking good stephan, really like the bot so far, wondering how it will be with many lights, i keep an eye there

03 March 2006, 07:00 PM
very classy work, Stefan! fantastic character, beautifully modelled. nice texturing. love it!

03 March 2006, 08:40 PM
Hey Stephan Really nice bunch of work you have here. The sketches are really slick and the texturing on that model is great! I think this image is going to be a good one. Subscribed. Cheers, good luck.

03 March 2006, 05:43 AM (

Fleshing out some background ideas with quick thumbnail sketches,

Hey Stefan, just wanna let you know that your thumnail sketches really helped me nail down my compostion. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

03 March 2006, 06:43 AM
Great robot and nicely done textures! :scream:
Feeling of chipped paint is really good. I would add maybe a little different shades of red to give more depth, replaced parts or something like that - but that's really matter of opinion. Keep up the good work!

03 March 2006, 07:09 AM
this is a thread to watch! Great little rusty robot, good text-job ;)

03 March 2006, 07:17 AM
I love your thumbnails! The robot is very expressive. This work looks like a safe bet. It is very much inline with the mission statement of the challenge so far. I will definitely be watching this thread.

03 March 2006, 10:28 AM
hey man , everything is coming along very nice , nothing to crit just keep rockin it!!

03 March 2006, 01:59 PM
That robot is pure genius!

03 March 2006, 02:37 PM
Hmmm.. Looks like character from "Robots" a little. That's not bad of course, but i hope to see brushed, reflective and weathered metal. So I'm a little disappointed ;)

03 March 2006, 04:48 PM (

rigging,pose & texture testing,
I've baked some parts of the earlier shader test into a texture map & painted in extra details, grime, scratches, decals etc.
also created a rig for ease of posing..& modelled a suitcase.

03 March 2006, 04:51 PM
Excellent modeling Stephan ! Texture and render are cool too ! :applause:

03 March 2006, 04:56 PM (

a GI render of the previous textured pose, rendered using the 3dsmax light-tracer.

03 March 2006, 04:58 PM
nice pose, great robot! Keep doin what you are doin! :)

03 March 2006, 05:11 PM
Great modeling and texturing!

03 March 2006, 05:15 PM
Wow, very cool work Stefan! Excellent job on the modeling, texturing and lighting! :applause:

03 March 2006, 05:22 PM
One small suggestion, I love the texturing, test, but maybe include larger patches where the paint is still intact. THis would indicate the the wear on the paint is from use on specific parts as oppose to there being wear throughout the paint on the whole body.

good points,I baked out the torso to a template & painted in some details while erasing some of the rust from the torso, might do the same for the head :)

cipher,shakes,soapy,MichaelMotion,a-papantoniou,Matellis,3D_Explorer...thanks for the support guys

JulianHo..good to hear that Julian,I'll be keeping an eye on your Journey too

robobot..yep, I addded some variation in the torse texture, the solid red wasa bit much for me too

Hynol..I'll try & get a brushed metal one in..though it' will no doubt be a little a bit grungy,& yes there's definitely a 'Robots' influence in this 'bot,a good film

..this bot will be one of several 'bots in a there should be a good selection of different texturing styles,I'll put it aside now & start on a couple new designs & maybe some miscellaneous props.

03 March 2006, 06:15 PM
hey man. lookin great.
i love the lighting.

03 March 2006, 06:17 PM
Man, I LOVE your style and attention to detail..the little logos everywhere and the oil drum body..totally brilliant stuff!

03 March 2006, 06:32 PM
Amazing model!

Keep going!

03 March 2006, 06:40 PM
Blimey you work fast! I've been toying with the idea of replacing one of the characters in my scene with a robot and seeing this latest update has made me want to do it all the more! Keep it up mate!

03 March 2006, 07:06 PM
This is one of my favorite threads I'm following. Really pro stuff Stefan.

03 March 2006, 07:32 PM
The robot is looking great! I like non texturized models, keep the good work and c ya later!

03 March 2006, 07:32 AM
And here i am happy to find a turbo mode modeler/texturer... :bounce:

The robot is just simply cool...from the concepts u have drawn i could guess which one i would choose to build...every one of them is looking great . The one u made looks so expressional...

This is going to be one of those threads....i can see it now/already. :)

03 March 2006, 10:06 AM
I like the design of the robot and the modeling! good job! Good idea, also, too post a few concepts, good to do some brainstorming

03 March 2006, 10:17 AM
Very cool and fun. Awesome model :applause: Good luck to you!

03 March 2006, 10:48 AM
Okay, I'll admit it. I havn't read you concept, I don't even know if you have posted more than one image.

I'm just here on the pure eye candy that you produced. I'm gonna subscribe, come back, read up, and blast you with my opinions :)

03 March 2006, 01:36 PM (

here's the painted texture for the Suitcase,

03 March 2006, 01:38 PM (

a close up of the textures

03 March 2006, 01:40 PM
hey stefan - still coming along nicely. I gotta keep going back cause so many people are posting on this thread!

my only critique is the suitcase. The textures look a little blurry on the actual model, or was that intended?

Matt -

edit: once I went back and saw the actual model with the textures - looks awesome. very good attention to detail and following your concept very well.

03 March 2006, 01:40 PM
Awesome textures :bounce:

I should have a small update on the next 'bot tonight..

hey stefan - still coming along nicely. I gotta keep going back cause so many people are posting on this thread!

my only critique is the suitcase. The textures look a little blurry on the actual model, or was that intended?

Matt -

Hi Matt..the textures in that last shot were a screengrab from the viewport, not rendered...I'll post a shot of the case by itself shortly

03 March 2006, 02:16 PM
impressive model and texture ! subscribe too, follow the progress !

ps : how much must I paid to put my logo on his suitcase ?! :scream: good advertising

03 March 2006, 02:17 PM (

here's a quick render of the suitcase using a modified hdri light setup from Pete Drapers site,I included a specular pass to get the extra detail in the textures

03 March 2006, 02:21 PM
wow,. you are working very fast!!

looks good too!

03 March 2006, 02:21 PM
ps : how much must I paid to put my logo on his suitcase ?! :scream: good advertising

Hi SweD,hopefully cgtalk don't mind me using ther logo & they see it the same way you do..I couldn't resist using it.

:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

03 March 2006, 02:40 PM
uoww! great work!!

03 March 2006, 02:43 PM

03 March 2006, 03:19 PM
Your render skills are too good to be true !
Continue Stephan , this is great !

03 March 2006, 03:20 PM (

here's a wip of the second 'bot,a two legged oddity.

03 March 2006, 03:41 PM
Great robots. Really like the designs. Maybe not the main character in red because he looks a little bit like the one from "robots" the movie...
Good luck.

03 March 2006, 03:50 PM
Hi Stefan

I've spent some time going through your thread. Your work so far has been nothing short of inspirational. I would like to see a concept sketch of the final composition, or are you planning on improvising as you are going along.

The only thing I don't like as much is the robot's eyes. It has allot to to do with my own personal taste, but I was hoping that you would add eyelids; I think it could be a useful tool to enhance the robots emotion.

Other than that I like what you have done so far.

The new robot is also looking good, keep it up and good luck.

03 March 2006, 05:12 PM (

I think I'm getting carried with the pistons :)..might tone them back a bit later..still working on the design this one

03 March 2006, 05:18 PM
I like it, continue your good work !

03 March 2006, 05:21 PM
authentic..thanks :) may still get the eyelids, depending on how much of that figure is seen in the final shot

the last post is very much a wip..I hate the feet on it & I possibly went a bit overboard on the pistons,lol...not sure if this model is in keeping with the style of last model though, but I'm running with it

any C&C on it is welcomed

03 March 2006, 05:36 PM
Awesome stuff!

03 March 2006, 07:19 PM
sharp modeling and texturing skills ant our style is very nice i`m gonna keep my eye on this one :)

03 March 2006, 08:06 PM
Holy S***...your stuff is freaking awesome Stefan..the 'bot master! and your texturing skills are lovely to watch..keep em coming!

03 March 2006, 10:06 PM
Hey looking really cool Stefan! Excellent job modeling the little guy.

I think I'm getting carried with the pistons

I don't think so, you've placed them well on the character and it adds to the belief that it could actually move. They also add a lot of detail.

Matt :)

03 March 2006, 04:57 AM
That eye candy just keeps getting better, beautiful models and textures. I love what your doing here, keep it up :)

03 March 2006, 05:50 AM
Wow, you've got some great robot designs going. Nice details too. Keep them coming!

03 March 2006, 06:23 AM
Beautiful progress!!
I agree with mmbenya - Pistons are just the way they should be. Don't touch them!!

I can't wait to see this one with textures...

03 March 2006, 06:43 AM
Fantastic work Stefan!! Concepts, models, textures…

I have 1 crit for your suitcase. You might want the make the different logo labels into stickers on the case, with their own bumps and wear-not subject to the underlying worn leather texture. (they currently look stenciled/airbrushed-on, not stuck-on like stickers)

I think I'm getting carried with the pistons :)..might tone them back a bit later..still working on the design this one
I actually agree with you on this one-to an extent The placement seems to be more limiting than anything else. adjusting the anchor points of the various pistons on the legs will make them appear to be much more functional.

keep up the speedy work!

03 March 2006, 07:45 AM
Shame on me for not seeing this earlier! Fantastic work all over - love the textures for the red robot
Looking forward to see where this goes - good luck!

03 March 2006, 08:55 AM
keep going and going ! superb mods again, lov the props of this robot !

03 March 2006, 10:35 AM
fantastic modelling and engineering. It looks very functional and feasible, maybe add some pipes or wires in a few areas too

03 March 2006, 12:16 PM
Excellent mechanical modeling here, love it so far :)

03 March 2006, 01:00 PM
Here's happening things! Wow, man, great stuff! Like your texture work and your modells are great! This will be intresting to see your final image!
Keep up with the great show:applause:

03 March 2006, 01:07 PM
Great great great modeling/mechanics coool texturing... (subscribes)

03 March 2006, 01:32 PM
Cool machine, I like the level of detail and the clean modeling of the machanical components. Your character looks both fututristic and old fashioned, and that design is very interesting, compared to your standard sci-fi robots. Keep up the good work. Alexi.

03 March 2006, 01:33 PM
Cool modeling again !
It is nice to see your art ! continue Stephan !

03 March 2006, 02:06 PM
Oh my... you did very much since I was here last time, Stefan

I really like the texturing.
Worn out suitcase, some rust... your robot had great time :)
Just keep posting. I really enjoy following this thread :bounce:

03 March 2006, 02:13 PM
great concepts and colours, and great modelling!

03 March 2006, 04:33 PM (

started painting the texture for the second bot

03 March 2006, 04:39 PM (

actual texture size is 2048x2048,I've also made a reflection map & bump map, along with a generic tiling texture to use on the not so obvious parts

03 March 2006, 04:55 PM (

Still haven't worked out the modeling on this one..but the textures are coming along

03 March 2006, 05:02 PM
Being a product designer myself usually I see robots and they annoy me becuase they just don't look mechanical enough. But yours... yours are excellent, you really have the whole industrial look nailed! Fantastic textures too. Good luck keping up your pace though! How fast can one man work before something in his head pops?

03 March 2006, 05:05 PM (

modeling progress,I'm quite happy with the top half & overall balance of this one, still need to redo the feet though & add some more cables.

03 March 2006, 05:06 PM
Wow. What a great texturing clinic you are putting on here. This is amazing.

How all this detail is going to be corralled into the scene is going to be interesting.

03 March 2006, 05:09 PM
really your textures are very beautiful, it delays me to see the continuation.

03 March 2006, 05:10 PM (

Some wireframe screengrabs

03 March 2006, 05:14 PM
Very nice little robot you got there, the textures so far look great and the glass in the little camera thing are awesome I love it, the little mesh details behind the glass really add to it. Keep it up I’ll be checking back

03 March 2006, 05:14 PM (

another close up..hdri render,

03 March 2006, 05:22 PM

03 March 2006, 05:22 PM
Looking Ace!

Super modeling and texturing and very nice details!
Danm you are working fast.

03 March 2006, 05:25 PM
wow that looks so real.....enough said...keppup the good work

03 March 2006, 05:37 PM
thanks for all the comments so far..much appreciated & great to know some people are following this one

matwire..heh,there's a lot of threads here delaying my progress too,I'm torn between working on mine or admiring everyone elses :D

Versiden..certainly wires & cables are coming..whats a bot without lots of cables :)

Crin..that's good to hear,I'm going to rig this one too & see hjow feasible he is when walking..should be interesting

Wintermute..I agree about the stickers, the bump map should have considered them,though..I doubt they will even be seen in the final render so might leave that for a bit,I've removed a couple of those leg pistons, might add some cables to the others & see if it works..thanks for subscribing!

& that's another day done, hopefully I can get his legs & feet fixed up & start a new bot over the weekend,

03 March 2006, 05:48 PM
Whoa... amazing modeling and texturing in a short time :)

Great job!

03 March 2006, 05:48 PM
ouch ! so realistic texturing ! kickin'ass !

03 March 2006, 06:11 PM
Nice work on that bot Stefan! Is that a spring between the torso and hips? if so, the secondary torso motion on his walk cycle could be very amusing–bouncing and wobbling about! :D Fantastic textures all around!

keep it up!

03 March 2006, 07:10 PM
Hey Stefan!
take a load of heh? take it easy! :D

great modeling, these models are getting impressive with these textures!

03 March 2006, 07:36 PM
your texturing is just lush!! I've never been a huge fan of rusty bots(mainly coz they wouldn't work!) but yours is just exceptional. really loving your work ALOT!!

03 March 2006, 09:43 PM
Dude, You are seriously rockin' this.
I am really digging you work so far.

03 March 2006, 09:44 PM
Front page :bounce: !!!

03 March 2006, 11:07 PM
Wow man your textureing and shaders rock!

Keep it up man:)

03 March 2006, 02:52 AM
lilCara,SweD,KOryH,sergage,Vedic kings..thanks!

Wintermute..I need to polish my animating skills but I'd love to try & get this guy's a very awkward design.& yep, the spring should add a bit of a bounce to his step.

shakes Cheers, grunge is good & adds a tonne of character for robots

MichaelMotion ..can't slow down now, there's only 79 days, 21 hours, 10 minutes, 31 seconds yea,I'll be putting this aside soon to work on other is getting very addictive.

03 March 2006, 03:55 AM
Hi again...
Now, could you change your name to "Master of texturing" ?

I love realistic pictures, and the last is even better than the robot was...
You are really paying attention to details. I guess it will pay off ;)

03 March 2006, 06:38 AM
Way to many replies to this thread to actually keep track of but I check back in often and am awe struck every time. Typically fantastic work. I'd love to know how you crank this detailed stuff out so fast. Do you ever leave your house? ... LOL

03 March 2006, 07:36 AM
great texturering...

03 March 2006, 02:18 PM
Modeling, texturing and lighting already? Wow...that's some quick work! Model and tex looks good too!

Great job so far

03 March 2006, 02:37 PM
Holy cow Stefan, already with the texturing and modeling? I'm still working out concepts  It's looking mighty fine though, looking forward to more updates :)

03 March 2006, 05:37 PM (

03 March 2006, 06:19 PM

03 March 2006, 06:30 PM
Hi stephan, looking good, very nice and clean modeling.-- good job.

03 March 2006, 06:35 PM
Just wonderful!

03 March 2006, 06:39 PM
awesome amount of's the puter coping? whenever I do robots they get sooo boggy.

03 March 2006, 09:50 PM
This one is great too !
great detail all around and really nice renders !

03 March 2006, 10:36 PM

Although in the last foot update, I don't know but the heel doesn't seem 'complete', what makes it rotate? I only see the dashpot that pulls or pushes it... we'll I'm not robot expert or anything but it popped when I saw it :P

great modeling nonetheless!

03 March 2006, 11:07 PM
Great modeling man, really like your robots. The textures are really good too. ill keep an eye on this thread. Really interesting stuff
Keep it up mate! :bounce:

03 March 2006, 11:26 PM
What to say... wonderful.... :)
I just can't stop looking at this pictures...

03 March 2006, 01:26 AM (

a quick concept sketch for a possible new bot

03 March 2006, 01:27 AM

Although in the last foot update, I don't know but the heel doesn't seem 'complete', what makes it rotate? I only see the dashpot that pulls or pushes it... we'll I'm not robot expert or anything but it popped when I saw it :P

great modeling nonetheless!

Hi..yeah the heel I didn't get around to yet,I like the idea of the 3 toes & a heel.
will be working on that some more today

Shakes..PC's going far so good,I expect the final render will be several passes, forground elements, background etc..that way I dont need to fuss too mcuh about a massive polycount.

thanks for the comments:)

03 March 2006, 03:37 AM
everything is awsome! i was looking forward to seeing you develop characters and you are kickin some major butt here. i think i'm liking these more than your architectural stuff. the texturing is amazing. keep up the great work.

03 March 2006, 04:56 AM
it seems a big work you'll like to do , wait for ur next update , so far so good

tuck..your entry is looking awesome,a pleasure to watch your work
luigithekid..great to hear that it inspires..thanks

03 March 2006, 02:20 PM (

a beauty pass of a half finished bot, still got a few smaller details to add

03 March 2006, 02:24 PM
What a great collection of characters. Everyone by themselves are a treat. Can't wait till they join forces.

03 March 2006, 02:25 PM (

03 March 2006, 02:31 PM (

& a GI pass,
I'm starting to think the first character wont make the final render, thinking I'll go more for hard sci-fi rather than anything too 'toony' & the first model just doesn't fit well with the direction these bots are heading..the concept of bots escaping through the hole in the fence with a grand cityscape beyond still remains.....

03 March 2006, 02:37 PM (

& an overhead shot

03 March 2006, 02:44 PM
I think you're right about your first robot. The direction of the other two feel "better." Keep going man. Looking great! :wavey:

03 March 2006, 02:48 PM
Inspiring stuff. I was going to be real cheeky and ask why aren't you in bed, (as you are in NZ) then I looked at all your entries. Nuff said. Great work.

03 March 2006, 02:51 PM
Wow.. I'm enjoying your work..
I love the red bot with the luggage =)

03 March 2006, 05:31 PM (

more modeling progress, might move onto texturing this one now

03 March 2006, 05:51 PM
great modeling job on this one, I think that you are right about the first character, it doesent has the same "feeling" as the others. Keep it up man

03 March 2006, 05:57 PM
Wow man this is nice stuff, love it love it!

03 March 2006, 07:20 PM
insane detail're out there! love every bit of it! great images.

03 March 2006, 07:50 PM
haha ! Look Really great, I like you model!

03 March 2006, 08:48 PM
very very nice stuff man, u inspire me to start on mine already.,

03 March 2006, 09:06 PM

Very nice stuff mate!

03 March 2006, 09:12 PM
I just love the way you model your characters

I'm all exited for the final piece!
This is looking very promissing, you've got a fan :D ;)

03 March 2006, 09:33 PM
Fantastic work. :bounce:
Master, you are an inspiration for my.

03 March 2006, 12:56 AM
Hi Stef.
Want to express my self here.
I find your thread very inspiring and educative for me..
I think your sketches rock, and the way you presented them is also very neat,,
I'l try make my workflow cleaner, way you keep yours.

Keep rocking man..

03 March 2006, 02:22 AM
I am just watching...and watching.... :)

I just like the way you put so much details into your models and textures.

It's a good idea to model then texture each model... rather then model everything and then add the textures and lights... Maybe I'll steal the idea :bounce:

03 March 2006, 02:33 AM
Clean looking models and artwork

03 March 2006, 07:57 AM
Still looking great stefan! I like the windows to the underlying elecronics. Will you beat this one up as much as the others? Maybe break some of that glass? Keep it up!

03 March 2006, 05:16 PM
hi again..thanks for leaving a comment,I've started some textures for the second bot, still working on the modeling too

Wintermute..there should be a few cracks in the glass,I've never textured crack glass before so that will be interesting

atra..yes,modeling & mapping is very important, especially modeling hard surface stuff where there's many repeated elements that get cloned around

03 March 2006, 05:16 PM (

some modeling & texture progress

03 March 2006, 05:18 PM (

one more..more updates soon

03 March 2006, 05:23 PM
very inspire thread ! and the best mechanic rendering I have seen so far ! it would be great if you share some behind the scene stuff! good job man!

03 March 2006, 06:58 PM
just great stuff all the engineering details, and again, superb texturing.

03 March 2006, 12:27 AM
i must say these are AWESOME :buttrock: robots
i'm still at the concept designing stage of my robot... not easy thing .
looks that you are over that stage huh?

looking forward to your progress
good luck:thumbsup:

03 March 2006, 01:31 AM
Yes, and the cloning shouldn't be to obvious, you're master at that :)

I'll just keep watching. Sooo cool

03 March 2006, 01:44 AM
...I'm starting to think the first character wont make the final render, thinking I'll go more for hard sci-fi rather than anything too 'toony' & the first model just doesn't fit well with the direction these bots are heading..the concept of bots escaping through the hole in the fence with a grand cityscape beyond still remains.....

Yeah, you've come away from the original toony concept :) Go for a style that you feel comfortable with, and it seems to me that would be hard sci fi more than toony. And by god does it look good :) Looking forward to more updates!

03 March 2006, 01:54 AM
This is amazing stuff and beautifully designed too. It's a lot of fun watching you work. I'll add my voice to the chorus by saying how much I admire your texturing.

03 March 2006, 02:55 AM
Wintermute..there should be a few cracks in the glass,I've never textured crack glass before so that will be interesting
If texturing the breaks doesn't work to your liking, you can try cutting the cracks in to the glass, that way you'll get correct reflections and refraction from the edges as well as the different pieces (think "broken mirror" look)

Just a thought :) Keep it up!

03 March 2006, 06:24 AM
Wow this thread is awesome. Why didn't i look in here earlier?

03 March 2006, 07:37 AM
That is some really cool texturing there! ...arrgghh...i love sci-fi stuff u make man! :bounce:

03 March 2006, 02:48 PM (

some more work on the textures, this bot has several template based textures, plus some grime maps for the glass.

03 March 2006, 02:51 PM (

a screenshot from photoshop

03 March 2006, 02:54 PM
do i see a CG logo in there? :scream: :applause: lookin good!

03 March 2006, 02:56 PM
Some really clean and tidy stuff in there. I always like to see clean UV's....mine are such a mess...:scream:

03 March 2006, 05:04 PM
DimitrisLiatsos Cheers!, & I thought I was being a bit messy with these uv's,lol...cheers!

ragdoll..I couldn't resist not using it

pencil-head,mdavid,atra,sandfish,shakes thanks for watching guys :)

monsitj...(awesome Spectacular entry you made)..The renders are using hdri with the 3dsmax skylight, diffuse & reflection maps are being used along with some procedurals, the reflect maps are to get the reflection working only on certain parts(though I'm still tweaking this aspect) bump maps have been used yet.
there's also a specular only light, plus 3 small omnis for the blue light,(inspired by a car stereo) :)

Wintermute..modeling the cracks sounded good,I had a go earlier using Procutter ( & results we're not that great so I'm still tweaking the glass,

urgaffel..yep,I might even turn it into trash & sneak it into the final render somewhere,I'm thinking a nice contrast to the big city will be an old scrap yard,so a lot of these bots as well as being featured whole, will also be dismantled & scattered about as trash.

03 March 2006, 05:08 PM (

a rear view of the bot, still tweaking the textures, the modeling is pretty much finished for this one & a new design will be started on soon.

03 March 2006, 05:14 PM (

a couple shaded views of the second final bot

03 March 2006, 05:15 PM (

view 2

03 March 2006, 05:20 PM (

one last view of this bot, cheers!

03 March 2006, 05:27 PM
I love your whole process! I have shown this thread to all of my students. Your attention to detail is amazing. When this is over it will be one of the most comprehensive step by step walkthroughs I have ever seen (you could publish this stuff!)

03 March 2006, 05:44 PM
That's insane realism you got here , breathtaking !
Everytimes a take look here , I lost an eye , and since I only have two , you really have to stop doing that :scream: !!

More seriously , that is just too good !

keep going mate !

cheers ,

03 March 2006, 05:51 PM
Have I said I want one? I don't know what I would do with it... but I want one. :bounce:

03 March 2006, 06:22 PM
Amazing work man, really cool texturing/shading, that will be an amazing picture, just keep it up :buttrock:

03 March 2006, 06:44 PM
Very good, pal.

I am really enjoying the lights and textures.

Good luck.

03 March 2006, 07:42 PM
Holy F@#!! you're good! a pleasure to watch, Stefan! a true detail crazy boy!!

03 March 2006, 08:19 PM
Wonderful Texture and shading, so realistic

I will follow your work
Good luck

03 March 2006, 08:21 PM
Yoink$$$ !.........hey stop posting real stuff ...get back to 3d u nut! :scream:

03 March 2006, 08:43 PM
Amazing stuff.

Your texture maps are simply stunning.

Good luck with the journey!

03 March 2006, 09:03 PM
Very nice detail in your designs, and the textures are spot on.

03 March 2006, 09:22 PM
Amazing, simply kickass :D !

03 March 2006, 05:52 AM
I really wish I had more time to keep up with your progress. The work that you have done is nothing short of amazing. Not only the modeling but the texture work you've done. I first met you at Renderosity and fell in love with your attention to detail. This thread only solidifies the respect that I have for your work and your unquestionable talent. Keep up the great work buddy!

03 March 2006, 07:07 AM
The orange of the texture is a tad too even. Other than that its amazing! You inspire me to work harde (just need to find the time though)r. This type of attention to detail is one of the things that drove me to study 3d modeling.

03 March 2006, 10:28 AM
Awsome textures! Cool high detail! How many robots will u build? Don't forget the enviroment, hehe!
Fantastic work!

03 March 2006, 10:58 AM
I should have a turntable of this one shortly,

a-papantoniou...considering I have no formal training in cg that comment is very good to hear, thanks :)

Zapan..."breathtaking !"...ditto on your entry Stéphane,,great to have you watching!

se7enthcin..."I don't know what I would do with it... "
I keep thinking I'd whack it with a crowbar, keeps reminding of the flying bots in Halflife2 which so often become targets for the infamous crowbar

DimitrisLiatsos,altebanger,mstic,sergage,cipher,rodrigoessinger,dust_fr ..cheers guys, thank's for dropping by

shakes..detail nut ..yup, that's me..& chances are none of it will be seen in the final render :D ..I think it's those kind of details that make the hard surface scifi pics look good..cheers mate

3D_Explorer....Ray,I know the feeling, the only thing slowing me down is watching everyone elses progress.& thanks for the kind words mate, the feelings mutual

Womball...The orange of the texture is a tad too even
I do agree, there is some subtle variation in the red part of the map, maybe too subtle?.adding the red was tricky, but I did want something different to the previous bot..good to have you watching :)

Jonason..thanks,there will be about a half dozen unique bots,
good point on the background

Max 234666 cccp
03 March 2006, 11:02 AM
Excellent textures!!

03 March 2006, 11:24 AM
Superb modeling! Cool, I'll be back for more hehe! Good luck man:bounce:

03 March 2006, 11:55 AM

Here's a small quicktime turntable ,10.mb (

there's a couple errors in it,some missing textures on the back,& I forgot to turn the wires on one side to 'visible' :D ..there's a general lack of detail on the backside as I don't expect that part to be seen in the final render, still a bit of tweaking need on some areas, the glass in particular needs more grime..but I'll put this one aside now & move onto the next one

Max 234666 cccp,thierry2005..thanks for looking in :)

03 March 2006, 11:56 AM
Awesome work dude ,that is one great render.

03 March 2006, 12:26 PM
interesting... can you explain your idea????it tooks coool

03 March 2006, 06:49 PM
Nice turn table man. The surface of the metal seems too shinny for the ammount of wear it has. I know it is missing some textures and all. Is that why it is so high in specularity and reflectivity?

I love the details and it does remind me of those little bots in half life 2. I use the crowbar as well. :wise:

03 March 2006, 07:12 PM
what an impressive work ! :applause:

You're so fast and your modeling/texturing is so good ... it's a real pleasure to follow your
thread ! (which means a lot in robot modeling I think)

03 March 2006, 07:18 PM
shakes..detail nut ..yup, that's me..& chances are none of it will be seen in the final render
..I think it's those kind of details that make the hard surface scifi pics look good..cheers mate

gotta love that, and the sign of a true perfectionist! couldn't agree more though. you've inspired me to go hard with my textures when I get to mine..meanwhile, I'll enjoy watching you go for it!
P.S..LOVE the turntable!

03 March 2006, 08:45 PM
Awesome QT! model is look amazing!

The texturing is super!
