02 February 2006, 03:50 AM
Thanks for stopping by Rebecca and Michael!!! im glad you like the idea so i decided to write a basic idea of what it will be , 100% final thou :)
A young man decides he is going to leave his house far in the mountians and undertake a long hard journey to become an artist in the city , armed only with dry meat , a sack of water ( made out of a buffalo badder) and his art portfolio made with what little paper he could find as well some braclets he has made to hopefully sell to feed his brother while in the city, He relies on one belief ....himself, in hopes to make enough money to feed his starving family. His little brother is also very sick and will also be taking part in the travels , barely able to walk the young man will have to pull his younger brother by sled .
02 February 2006, 04:41 AM
already with a concept huh? way to go buddy

03 March 2006, 07:46 PM
Hey man! Nice sketches.. :) I wish you good luck and lots of fun! see you around...
03 March 2006, 12:48 AM
Just another idea i have , a group of people traveling to a city made out of crystal with a lava river.
03 March 2006, 02:03 AM
hie matt~thats one good update u have got~the idea is good and i like the color as well.it'd be great if u could focus more on the characters:)
03 March 2006, 04:25 AM
giving up on the running away from home , this one is about people going away to war , and there is a little girl waving goodbye.
03 March 2006, 04:29 AM
i dig the lava river and the christal city :), but im a real fantasy addict ;). really like the colour scheme of that one, nice saturated colours.
but find your sketch to work with dont let you talk into something you dont really want to paint, you will most likely quit if you do.
see you around and have a great deal of inspiration for your 3D one too.
03 March 2006, 04:30 AM
I am really looking forward to seeing which concept you decide on...
03 March 2006, 04:38 AM
Hey thanks for the kind words :)
That pic there i have of the girl waving goodbye was ment to go in my 3D thread but i dont know how to get it out of this one :(
03 March 2006, 06:24 AM
I started working on the city in the background.
03 March 2006, 06:36 AM
nice colors , but dude u don't have a foreground with the current composition,
just middleground and bg... i think they stressed foreground elements in the rules..
i mean if u care ' bout rules might check that out maybeez
03 March 2006, 06:40 AM
dont worry man , shes all under control. I always work background to foreground , I just added those little people in the bottom corner to give myself an idea of what direction the will be coming from :)
03 March 2006, 06:43 AM
ah okay, rock on dude
03 March 2006, 07:07 AM
Beautiful colors in that last sketch. I really like the atmosphere of it.
03 March 2006, 07:12 AM
Sweet colours Mat. This is really coming along! I'd better subscribe to this one too! *click*
03 March 2006, 07:30 AM

good luck Mat!
03 March 2006, 07:47 AM
i like the lava river and cristal city concept very much matt :D keep up the good work :D
03 March 2006, 07:57 AM
i'll just say it again matt~goodjob with the colors~like squib mention about the forground characters,i'll be looking forward to the next update:)
03 March 2006, 08:16 AM
So i decided to do a quick sketch of was the people will be doing in the painting , it will be based on a father having to leave his son to go to the crystal city to hopefully find work to feed his wife and kids.
03 March 2006, 08:40 AM
I like where this is going, I think more emotion between the 2 characters in the forground could work really well for this image.
03 March 2006, 08:42 AM
I like where this is going, I think more emotion between the two characters in the forground could make this image very good.
03 March 2006, 09:21 AM
Oh wow, the parting scene with that father in the foreground added is really kind of moving.
03 March 2006, 09:59 AM
Hey hey! Glad to see your entering. I really like your sketches so far, keep it up!!
03 March 2006, 10:06 AM

03 March 2006, 09:02 PM
Rachel , erilaz, Stefan, Jannis, Anna, Madalaine and Micheal! thank you for all your kind word , I am really happy to hear that everyone is liking my idea, so I think this will be the concept i follow through with.
I will update it again tonight and get everything in there i want and then it is off to start the final image :)
Thanks for the support everyone , it means a lot :)
03 March 2006, 03:39 AM
Hey everyone , im just trying out some more sketches before i pick the one i will follow through with. I will stay with the crystal city idea with the father leaving his family , just finding a good composition.
03 March 2006, 05:34 PM
Hey, a local boy ! I like the colors so far; and the pillars on the hill are foreboding...good luck !
03 March 2006, 04:59 AM
Just started getting more of an idea of what the city will look like , next i will change the characters a bit , add more emotion between them.
03 March 2006, 05:19 AM
Now that's what I call a great composition, keep it goin' !
03 March 2006, 05:35 AM
yeah matt~the crystal city,looks good as b4.:scream:
03 March 2006, 09:03 AM
Darcy1- Hey ! where you from? lol i dont think i have seen anyone from Nova Scotia on cgtalk! thats for the comment.
Sh@ke- haha yeah man it hasnt changed a whole lot in the newests update , thanks :)
George- Thanks a lot , this concept painting is just for working out the basic composition and colors. Right now I am working on the line art and getting most of the detail in there , the crystal city is proving harder to design that i thought. here are a couple references I am using while designing , every building will be clear.
03 March 2006, 12:33 PM
Hey everyone , right now I am just trying to get a sense of what this city will look like , so i think i will be doing many of these kind of sketches before i decide on what the city in the final image will be.
03 March 2006, 03:51 PM
looking good Mat,I saw an awful TV movie a few weeks caled the core (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1807859491/info) possibly the one redeeming feature of it was a nice crystal city near the earths crust
your main concept composition looks very good, keep at it!
03 March 2006, 03:25 AM
I'm from Halifax, just found this board six months ago - absolutely the best site I've ever found on the Web.
I really like this crystal city idea. I also love the purple. My thought is to avoid any kind of curving lines. No matter how well you render the translucence of the material, if there's curves it will probably end up looking like water and just be really weird :-)
03 March 2006, 09:55 AM
Stefan thanks for the kind words hahaha i want to see that movie now , but it was made for tv you say , so i probly never will.
Darcy- I agree i didnt like that curve aswell , but i have a new idea for how the city will look so i will paint that up today , cheers !
03 March 2006, 11:09 AM
Hey this is look great keep it going I look forward to seeing your final 'lineart'! :)
03 March 2006, 05:24 PM
So this is how my background will look :) but hopefully a lot better hehe , so now i will start the line art and draw in all the people , the hardest part of this painting will be getting a good emotion going on between the 2 major characters.
03 March 2006, 06:40 PM
Nice composition. I like the layout and the colors.
03 March 2006, 05:34 AM
nice going with the latest background concept matt~id like to see the crystals like the reference u posted, crisp and hard.especially those laying by the edge of the river.keep it up matt:thumbsup:
03 March 2006, 10:03 AM
nice composition and colors matt :D i like the ay it flows to the top :D great job keep it up
03 March 2006, 02:23 AM
I think you've really nailed it with this background image. I love the way the warm and cool colors kind of smoosh together; it looks very organic. The shapes are also oddly reminiscent of a rib cage, I'm not quite sure how that relates to the idea of the journey but it is certainly very interesting!
Can't wait to see the figures and how they relate to the background and each other.

03 March 2006, 04:51 PM
Hey thanks for the comments everyone!
right now i am starting to go in and add/detail the city in the background , still lots to do to it but this is what i have so far :)
04 April 2006, 02:36 AM
Can't say enough about this...the way you're laying on the color is just amazing, and the structures are so unique; weird yet believeable at the same time. Keep going !!

04 April 2006, 04:10 AM
hey thanks for the words everyone! i hope an update will be coming soon , but I have been working a lot lately and havent had much time or energy to work on the painting but soon for sure hehe
Darcy- thanks man! haha im moving up to good ol halifax in 3 weeks , it should be a good time i hope , maybe if im lucky i will pick up some freelance gigs, i will have to start hanging out at bars and start networking , know any good places for that? :)
04 April 2006, 05:18 PM
Started detailing the bottom left corning of the painting , trying to design a lava flow that has hardened into rock , also I am working on the characters but i dont want to post that until i have a solid drawing for them. thanks everyone!
05 May 2006, 06:57 PM
Just started working on the concept some more , i think i will be going for a more vertical canvas since this is a very vertical painting , soon i will add in the people and start getting into the heavy detailing
05 May 2006, 12:27 AM
very nice colors here i'll be watching the progress
05 May 2006, 10:54 AM
Hey everyone , I relized that I did not post any line art so here it is :)
05 May 2006, 10:57 AM
Almost done , right now i have a lot of problem areas that i will have to fix up , like blending more of the background color into the characters and fixing up some of there anatomy and so on , Hopefully i will make it on time! everyones doing a great job!
05 May 2006, 02:10 PM
an interesting concept you have here. i would adjust the arm of the hooded character that falls behind the other character. it looks a bit long. maybe it should be on her arm or her shoulder. anyway, good luck with getting this finished.
