02 February 2006, 02:09 AM
apparently my post num. 1000 has been my submit to the challenge lol, maybe it gives me good luck ;)

03 March 2006, 06:51 AM (

This is my first idea. I won't be using it probably, but as I finished the sketch I'm posting it here.

The main idea is a civilization of some creatures who live among the darkness. They use all kinds of toxic and fossil fuels, and have no remorse in wasting it, as well as all what nature gives them. One day the dense athmosphere of clouds that surround their world gets broken and they find out that...they can't survive with the sunlight as it makes them blind and corrodes their skin...This is the cause why most of them die.

So the survivors begin a journey, looking for another place to be. Hopefully they'll have learned the lesson, and will treat their next place more carefully... :)

When I choose a final concept, I'll work more on it :P

03 March 2006, 07:22 AM (

Placed in a futuristic world, this concept is about a girl looking for adventures, tired of spending her time in the same facility, watching from far distance the place she wants to be.

03 March 2006, 08:05 AM (

A warrior, tired of not fighting anyone interesting, starts a quest to find stronger people.

hehe.. that will be 3d, isn't it? have a look on my WIP here !!:) (
We have similar ideas!!! :)

Escaping from the light, sounds interesting man, but dont put that much creaturs there!

keep it up man!

03 March 2006, 02:01 AM (

He understood he had a monster inside;
The demon couldn't be held anymore.
Then began the journey to the dark world,
leaving neither mercy or remorse behind.

Thanks man :) although I think I'll go for my last one...It's more CHALLENGING :bounce:

03 March 2006, 06:15 AM (

First steps...

03 March 2006, 06:16 AM
sorry for the silly shaders, just having fun :bounce:

03 March 2006, 06:25 AM
Holy crap thats awesome!!

Good luck man!

03 March 2006, 06:36 AM
Hey thanks man, really appreciated, I'll be updating later tonight or....tomorrow

03 March 2006, 06:47 AM
for a head preview this is impressive

03 March 2006, 01:04 PM
Wow thats a bit good! Only thing i can think of to crit -is that the shinyness you have on the face wouldnt be of such an even coverage - thered be some more matte bits -which'd just give it that small edge and get rid of the overall waxy look you sometimes get with SSS -but im sure you already know that - seriously -this is pretty much flawless!

03 March 2006, 01:54 PM
Hey DDS nice to see u here! good luck and Good start!!

03 March 2006, 09:02 PM
Hey thanks guys, sorry couldn't update yesterday :(

Selina, right now there are no textures anywhere, just 3D maps for giving some more quality to a default specular, at the face, and some normal maps for bump :) Hehe, as I said, just having fun with shaders, I won't use much SSS in that face. Thanks anyways, keep 'em coming!

03 March 2006, 04:29 PM
I love your style really original and beautiful!

03 March 2006, 02:14 AM
Very nice start. I will be looking for more.

03 March 2006, 09:57 AM (

Pieces of armor seal the demon

(some are subject to change, the black one is just preliminary, dont have more time today!)

03 March 2006, 03:15 PM
Looking good so far... sure that they are gonna look great at the finishline...

03 March 2006, 03:58 PM

This is obviously looking very good, and it helps that I go totaly gaga when I see an awsome samurai. It makes me happy, I thank you.

You sound like a busy man, but could I kindly ask if you could perhaps give us some insight on how you work, it would be much appreciated.

Samurais are cool

03 March 2006, 07:34 AM (

Gotta wake up in 4 hours...NOT ENOUGH TIME!!

03 March 2006, 07:34 AM
Btw thanks for the replies guys...they keep this alive :P

03 March 2006, 07:38 AM (

this is how it looks in zbrush window, fingers are messed up, as other zones...haven't really had time. Maybe this is enough, as it will be covered with stuff. What do you think?

03 March 2006, 09:11 AM
nice work on zbrush.
thanks man; i think the arms are alittle bit; big on your character , it will be better if you change the scale of them .
really nice work.

03 March 2006, 10:15 AM
Impressive start on 3D! that head is fearsome.. also nice works with that arm. That's a bit bumpy for my taste, but definitely fine muscle shapes you have.

Best luck!

03 March 2006, 10:45 AM
Simple but very nice style...

03 March 2006, 10:40 PM
very good anatomy:thumbsup: ... the details are awesome
good luck

03 March 2006, 01:41 AM
Wow.....very nice

03 March 2006, 06:43 PM
Thanks guys!! I agree with ur crits :)

In the end I've seen that generating the normals with Zmapper is a lot better than with zbrush standard and everything looks much better now...

I'll update tonight :)

03 March 2006, 07:55 AM (

I've been messing with Zmapper and normal maps are much better now. I've added some more stuff too! :)

No final textures anywhere, just messing :P

03 March 2006, 08:06 AM
Brilliant stuff man...only humble thought ...maybe head should be a little bigger with that torso and hands...but then maybe i am wrong!...

Very cool Zbrusing too ....

Have fun.

03 March 2006, 12:04 PM
Great work man!
The only think I don't like is that the face is too much covered by the helmet...
Well, looking forward to new updates!

03 March 2006, 12:46 PM
cool man!
u got the most interesting model I've seen in this challenge so far.
keep it up.

03 March 2006, 03:35 PM
great detail man! Awesome model !

03 March 2006, 06:37 PM
Thanks guys for the nice feedback :)

Dimitris: The head is a bit small in the concept. Maybe I tweak it in the end, if it looks too weird.

Lara: yeah u're probably right, but I like the look of the concept and want to make it look as close as possible. As said to Dimitris, I can always tweak it in the end, it's just a piece

03 March 2006, 08:33 AM (

just a little bit more and I'll have everything from head to waist :)

03 March 2006, 08:48 AM
wow, nothing to say except great stuff. that armour looks insane!

03 March 2006, 09:36 AM
great details and superb model, I'll be keeping a watch ;p

03 March 2006, 10:26 AM
Amazing! I love the organic shapes you're using in that armour. your work is totally unique.Keep it up.

03 March 2006, 12:17 PM
I really like the armor you are building for this guy.Good job

03 March 2006, 01:14 PM
Looks great except that thing that covers the face.Get it will look uch better...

Make some angry expresion on the face and whoala...

Good luck Bro

03 March 2006, 07:45 AM
today no update  I've spent like 2 hours trying to beat Kintaro in the Mortal Kombat II arcade and have to go to sleep....yes I know, it's sad, but one day is one day.

now I feel bad...

Thanks for the support guys, u keep my challenge alive :)

03 March 2006, 08:36 AM
How did I know you'd be into Mortal Kombat?! :D You should send your character into the arena instead, he looks like he could take out a few!

As for the modelling, it's looking really good, I love the detail although if I was to crit, I'd say I want to see his face more as the nose guard covers it up too much, but I realise that's the style so maybe that can't be helped.

Excellent work though, keep plugging (and kick Kintaro's ass!)

03 March 2006, 09:13 AM (

Ok, as mentioned Ive made the head bigger, just to test out while I dont have the final version, some more parts were added, by next update I think I'll probably have his body blocked out, and will just need the adjustements.

By the way, instead of that demon I'll make a really long haired horse with armor too...let's see how it comes out!

03 March 2006, 09:15 AM (

(reupdating because the previous one had a pink ugly nail :) )

Nice modeling, Albert! So many wonderful details! But your idea is so dark for me :) Good luck!

04 April 2006, 10:31 PM
As already said, the armor is coming out nicely.keep us posted.

04 April 2006, 10:38 PM
nice armour, but if u try to imagine the character without the armour, aren´t the proportions a bit weird? like the distant from shoulder to shoulder too big, the head too small and the neck too long? just giving some constructive criticism! goodwork overall!

04 April 2006, 02:41 AM
Thanks guys!

btw u are mostly right metamesh, hehe. I did the concept without any ref model and tried to mimic it all the time, I'm fixing props eventually, its not that its really difficult to do that in this model :)

04 April 2006, 05:47 AM
That armor is really cool. Amazing detail and craftsmanship. Good stuff.

04 April 2006, 07:55 AM
Incredible modeling on this character, congrats! Will be back for more:bounce:

04 April 2006, 12:30 PM
Nice modeling, good details and shading, powerful character.:)

The Journey Begins (
Spectacular 3D (

04 April 2006, 02:59 AM
wow! Nice. In my opinion the head does look better bigger. Great modeling, but I dont really like the mouth guard. Your going to have fun posing!!

Cya around... Poof!

04 April 2006, 03:35 AM
Insane details on the latest character. I like the head enlargement you've done. Some bits not facing the camera look a bit stretched, are you using bump maps for the details? I'm just nitpicking though, it's looking really good.:)

04 April 2006, 01:05 PM
DDS. Really nice modeling. a think is good idea changing the demon for the horse. great job so far. keep it up

04 April 2006, 03:15 PM
I've been watching this guys progress and he just keeps getting better and better! I agree with the head crits it does look a bit small, but you are aware of that! I also am not a fan of that nose guard because your facial model looks so cool its a shame that it is covered by a less impressive peice of armor! Keep it up though, you can win this! YEA!!

04 April 2006, 04:42 PM
The warrior`s armour looks a bit like made of bronze. For me, it associates with Japanese samurai but also a little bit with ancient Babylon?! Interesting design, waiting for more.

Good luck!

04 April 2006, 07:20 PM
hi albert very good detailas i like it i dreaming 2 see it when u animat it

04 April 2006, 08:51 PM

04 April 2006, 10:04 PM
hi albert i like your model a lot can't wait to see the scene

04 April 2006, 07:50 AM (

Seeing so many nice replies today has reminded me to update the thread. I'm very bad at that...I never know when a new update is a good update...As you can see I practically almost finished the body and I've made a blockout for the terrain, as well as tested some color mood...

Thanks a lot everyone!

EDIT: the transparency maps are 50% shown because of a quick ambient occlusion layer, I will fix that in the end but right now it's much faster :) U can notice that in the small cloath that hangs from the waist belt

04 April 2006, 08:18 AM
TONS of elaborate details, I love it.
Some small crits: The arms and head look too small proportionally.
At first glance I thought he was facing away from the camera, I think that impression comes from the shape of the armour around the neck-line. Normally the collar would dip down at the front; as it is it would get in the way if he tried to lean his head forwards. Somehow the arms look stuck-on; I don't get the impresion that they join up to the shoulders in an anatomically realistic way, perhaps again its related to the armour, looks like he might have difficulty with mobility of the shoulder as it is currently designed. Perhaps larger arm-holes?

Keep it up!

04 April 2006, 04:22 AM (

Here's a render of the almost finished model with the pose. Probably next details will be added eventually and I dont think I make another full body image of him again!

04 April 2006, 05:00 AM
Fantastic model with great!

04 April 2006, 05:04 AM
hi Albert, that model is is good detailed . ilike it very much . grt work . would definitely wait for the final image .all the best

04 April 2006, 06:05 PM
Just great ! One of the best CG character I have ever seen !
The detail is amazing ... What could we do without Zbrush ?

04 April 2006, 09:17 PM
:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock: Very cool! :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

04 April 2006, 09:38 PM
I can't even begin to imagne how long it took you to do all that detailing.
He looks brilliant, nice work

04 April 2006, 12:40 AM
this is extremely good! very inspiring details -- from your attention to clothing design to secondary artifacts such as the forearm wraps, right shoulder shield, and belts. Would be interesting to see a wireframe, especially if you are using displacement maps. Also, where you are finding inspiration for this -- if you are using reference images or historic clothing types...

Best of luck!

04 April 2006, 01:09 AM
gjpetch: thanks man. I agree with your crits about the head, it looks small, but with the helmet it looks so much bigger...that it gives me a right feeling in the final image. Also the fact that the body is proportionally a bit bigger than the head is already on my mind since the beggining...anyways, just wanted to say u're right and It's not very difficult to change it and I'll work hard to make my image looks good, and if this is what it needs to look good, I'll enlarge the head! About the armor, not giving him enough flexibility on the neck, I agree, but he doesnt actually move much...he's more like a "sauron" type of warrior, u know, much more powerful and protected than actually fast (ill make a subtle aura over him eventually). The arms issue makes sense, a slightly bigger hole is definitely in my TODO list now :)

tuck: thanks!

frag: thanks too, let's hope there is a final image!
gpepper: ur comment is really appreciated dude. And yes...zbrush...mmmhh I'm wondering if I could make the background completely rendered in zbrush!

m477: :buttrock:thanks man!

womgoose: well...I only remember I began by the times of 1000th post lol

oceanbluesky: Thanks for the good detailed comment. Well i didnt use any references of any kind for the details. I just got 1 image of an actual samurai suit to get a mind refreshing of what they looked like. I used to work on apocaliptic Jerusalem reliefs during some months at work, so I guess that I have them in my mind...I really love making reliefs and thinking about them, I make them everywhere I can, they take quite a lot but otherwise i wouldnt have so much fun!!

well, I got a new PC here where im staying so I guess I'll work faster 'cause the older one was so annoying, I could only make 1 render per MAX session 'cause it didnt have enough RAM :)

04 April 2006, 07:44 AM (

Hey, here comes a quick idea for the horse, proportions probably suck but I'll watch more about them when I'm with the actual model. I want to make a long legged horse and with long hair going through the armor, that can look good.

04 April 2006, 10:32 PM
I'm sure the horse will turn out excellent, a daunting task perhaps after the detail in the last model! The horse will need to be powerful and loyal, I think a shire horse/back beauty hibrid perhaps? Can't wait to see him/her come together!

04 April 2006, 01:55 AM
Wow! What a spectacular model! Although lighting wise you can't see that much of the details. You might want to use a strong rim light and a somewhat strong front light to bring out some of those details.

04 April 2006, 05:38 AM (

maybe its a bit dark in some screens :P I'll try to enlighten it up with the armor hehe :)

04 April 2006, 05:41 AM (

the front

04 April 2006, 05:45 AM (

screenshot. Model is not totally realistic, I mean legs can look a bit too long and other issues, but I just wanted the armor to be able to fit, as well as give him the look of a good horse for my guy.

04 April 2006, 04:50 PM
Good work, is complet modeling in ZBrush?

Best regards and congratulations¡¡

PD: Remember the ZBRUSH spanish community is ;)

04 April 2006, 09:33 PM
The Horse looks good.
Sure it's not 100% accurate but with 4 weeks to go, you won't hear me saying a word and besides it is still very very good ;)
In art we all want to do perfect work all the time but sometimes deadlines come first and I really want to see you finish this.
The work you put in on the main character was incredible and he will look amazing in the final render.

Good luck with it all... see you at the finishline (if I get there).

05 May 2006, 12:23 AM (

Been really busy lately...

I'm on the horse modelling stage, pitifully he will be half covered by the samurai on top. It's rigged and it's supposed to be climbing the wall behind the guy, which is pulling him from the chain...

05 May 2006, 12:25 AM (

working on a matte painting from photos on my 3D landscape, I'm still defining the color scheme and so...didn't have a wacom so it was pretty slow :(

05 May 2006, 04:52 AM
Great looking character and BG. I like character armor. Great work... All the best

05 May 2006, 10:56 AM (

my silly version of a naginata :)

05 May 2006, 11:13 AM (

the cliff where the woods that support cut bleeding heads lie on.

05 May 2006, 11:17 AM (

an example of the mood I'm aiming for in the foreground

05 May 2006, 11:18 AM
hehe long time no brain must hate to think about updating each time i do something...oh well, I forgot another thing

05 May 2006, 11:34 AM (

what do you think about it? any tips?

(btw if you can, check the last updates as I made some in a row :P!

05 May 2006, 11:24 PM (

messed with lighting and colors a bit more (which is what worries me the most) and added base terrain (will probably have some dry plants).

The new terrain has been done the same exact way as the cliff.

05 May 2006, 11:26 PM
the last one needs some more sharpness... (obviously the big image...the thumbnail is totally sharp :P)

also If you have any advice or comments they would be really appreciated, I think I can make it, but alone is less fun :)

05 May 2006, 12:06 AM
The background could use thicker fog. And more random rocks on the ground.

05 May 2006, 11:06 AM
yeah I agree. Haven't worked much on the bg but the rocks or any other element to give more variation to the ground will be added soon. Thanks :)

05 May 2006, 09:55 AM
just submitted the turntable for my character...

boah, that's getting hard 2 days. Still working on the sword texturing, gotta finish some buildings for the village and the matte painting!!

that will keep me from sleeping during a couple days :D

05 May 2006, 08:48 PM

Holy hell this is awesome! :applause: The samurai model is stunning. You must finish! :buttrock:

Just to speed up the matte painting, maybe you could just model a few rocks in zBrush, texture with photos and use the clone tool in PS.

Anything to get this to the judges :D

05 May 2006, 10:56 PM
great tach. do you use Zbrush?

05 May 2006, 11:02 PM
thanks guys!!

Don't worry, the only motivation left is finishing body's full of adrenaline and I work better. Just have in mind that...

WTH I'M GONNA FINISH THIS!!

ravioli, thanks I thnk ur advices are great, I'll make use of them at some point during the next hours!
kreuz, thanks, yes Zbrush massively :)

05 May 2006, 01:38 AM
Caffeiene! You have lots to do, but your work has been top notch. Your portrait of your mother is really impressive.

05 May 2006, 02:27 AM
Thanks Womball :) Caffeiene is not enough, i have headache today...

i'm making tests, i would upload something but it would be another incomplete thing. Next one will have all elements i've done, but i need to throw the samurai rendering tonight...for previewing the big size picture. Layer rendering 4ever!

I'll keep you posted

05 May 2006, 02:40 AM
I feel for you on that. Been rendering layers all day. I had to switch to an older version of software I'm using to be able to render at the required resolution!

05 May 2006, 04:30 AM (

cut bleeding heads...they didn't take much to do, as they are simple and crappy. Anyways it's not worth more time as they will be against the light.

I'll show how they look with the rest in less than 19 hours :D

05 May 2006, 08:02 AM (

I might add those rocks if I have time. Right now I think it's much more important to finish the background!

15 hours left...c'monn!!! (haven't slept today lol)

I really think that if I've got this far I gotta finish in the timeline, that's the fun part!

05 May 2006, 08:07 AM
Get cracking. Your almost out of time! Looks awesome. I think you could submit it soon.

05 May 2006, 08:10 AM

I have a doubt...

no 15 hours left?

05 May 2006, 08:12 AM
You may have 15 hours, but the server has been down a lot lately for this section. And you still have to submit the tiff which can be tricky if the server is down.

05 May 2006, 08:14 AM
oh sheet, well I'll have faith, I have good plans that need 14 hours 59 minutes to be done...I'll try to go faster :buttrock:

05 May 2006, 08:24 AM (

it's something I did for someone that wanted some more details about my character.

05 May 2006, 11:54 PM (

"Please father...
please no more pain!
tell me why all these chains
that keep me sealed among the darkness."
"Please mother...
please no more lies,
that keep me from knowing myself.
What are you hiding me?"
"dad who is this man?"
" again! please stop it...NOOOO"
" that what life has to offer me?"
"I refuse."
"What, more...? who are you!?"
***you know very well who I am***
"No...I don---"
***you are free, go and find me***

The demon couldn't be held anymore;
He understood he had a beast inside.
Then began the journey to the dark world,
leaving neither mercy or remorse behind.

05 May 2006, 11:56 PM
It's been an awesome journey guys!

Thanks everyone, specially Womball, who has been there all the time...supporting me :)

05 May 2006, 12:12 AM

Beautiful final scene. The demon and his horse have an extremely professional quality to them. :buttrock:

Hopefully they can roll some heads with the judges.

Fantastic work. :applause:

05 May 2006, 12:28 AM
thanks man. I'd have liked to add some more stuff, but that doesn't mean I'm not happy with it.

If you check the concept u'll see that I keep the same idea as the beggining, and that's what I like. It's been a willpower test being so much time doing the same stuff!

I'll see you in the next challenge. Your entry ROCKS.

05 May 2006, 01:57 AM
Awesome image! I want to learn to more about zbrush so I can try produce very detailed objects like this. Really fantastic job. Samurai's are awesome btw. I didn't know I made that much impact! Um do you happen to have any zscripts of your workflow? I just saw some of the test heads, again, and am rather floored by them.

05 May 2006, 09:22 AM
hey Womball thanks!

well, I don't have any zscripts but if the community needs some I can do that. (np :) )

See you in next challenge :bounce:

05 May 2006, 09:39 AM
Great Image Albert!

Nice composition and amazing sense of detail!
Congratulations and good luck with the judges!

05 May 2006, 09:43 AM
Hey Albert! Really inspiring modeling and lighting in this scene! Also like the image you made of your mum on her birthday -- great idea, something all of us should do! She also looks so smart and encouraging! Good luck with the judges! Cheers!

05 May 2006, 11:28 AM
Hi try, thanks! your image is really wonderful :) Good luck too

Hey oceanbluesky thank you :) That image of my mum was very fun to create! Good luck with the judges to you too!

05 May 2006, 12:34 PM
Wow, that's some crazy modeling detail. Too bad you can't make a huge turn table so you can zoom in close to see it all.
Good job.

05 May 2006, 12:39 PM
Great job! Very nice!

05 May 2006, 12:44 PM
That's some incredible modeling! And the horse seems real and full of energy. I don't know how many times I've seen a scene fall apart because the horse doesn't look right, but yours is killer!
Great dark and powerful image.

05 May 2006, 01:52 PM
very nice image ! you are a great modeller , and composition look nice too , congratulation fo the final and good luck man!

05 May 2006, 05:11 PM
Woody, Thanks, I made the turntable 2x the size u see in the page but I don't know where to upload it...

alvin, thanks man!

glenn, one of the weak points I see in the image is in some part, the horse, so I'm glad u're telling me nice things about it. Thanks!

monsitj, hehe you are great modeler/texturer/lighter/renderer... thanks!

Great work on the final image. Background is maybe a bit sparse...but the foreground is amazing! Nice lighting too. Good luck with judging!:)

Greatto, thanks man!! very encouraging. I'm glad u liked the text, it was a very personal style and I was afraid that people would just read it without noticing the "---"...btw there are 3 layers. The main ground with the character and horse standing on it, the cliff of the heads, the heads (separately), the buildings of the background and then the matte painting (edit: ehm, that's not 3...)

Burpy thanks dude :) If I'd had more time I'd have worked more on the bg!
