Sort of an experimental painting, the way I'm doing it is painting in one layer per sitting, so once I finish I merge the layers down *shrug*, just mizing things up. It's entirely photoshop so far, started as an 800x800pix sketch that I upresed to roughly 4000square and that's the level I've been working at.
Trying for a very rembrandt-esque subtlety to it. Still not sure what I want to do with the background, the beard and layers of clothing are more important atm. Looking for any critiques you might have.

Updated the image with improved reflected light. Still not sure what I want the background to be.

I love this image and I'm sure you will make a super render - it already shows now !
You do have some anatomy issues though that you would perhaps like to solve before getting too deep into the render.
I downloaded your image and placed the Loomis image (afterwards rescaled and rotated it a bit) on top of it - layer set to Product. Then I just blocked in some colors in areas where something seemed to be missing.
The below (next post) is what I came up with. I also moved the mouth a bit to the left to get it more directly under the nose. It seems like he needs a lot more head volume and a much bigger ear for once. In this case, you would need to develop the beard a bit more in the left side of the image.
However, changed like that, he doesn't any longer look directly at the spectator as before, so I think if you want him to continue doing that, you will have to rotate the face and get less left side and more right side and the noseline much more in the middle.
I hope you don't mind me fiddeling with your image - I learn a lot doing it and so wish I would be able to do the same thing with my own images ....
I'm leaving for skiholidays and won't be back until two weeks from now - I look forward to seeing how you've progressed in the meantime

Sorry, I didn't manage to upload the two images in the same post, so here is the one where I just blocked in some color under the Loomis layer.
