Already posted this question in MAX forum and later remembered bout this one (I think it has more rigging pros around here =))

Well I use 3dsmax for 4 years but for all this time Ive "rigged" only 2-3 chars.
As for my experiense both tools as skin and physique have much in common.
My question is for ppl competent in MAX riggin. What are the differences? What are adventages of one and other? What should I use for preciese rigging of hi poly characrer
in summer cloth (not being used in any animation only for still image).

I have the same question as to what a solution would be. Same problem, but a different setup. I've got a dense mesh in Max and need to rig my characters faster, only to be used for an animation... I have found in the past while working with bones and skinning that I could actually mirror the envelopes and weight on the verts and it would also actually stay in balance... Although now I need to work with bipeds ( to save time on ik solvers and the rest) I need to know how I could speed up the process. So I pose my question in sort of another way:
Is skinning appropriate for bipeds, should I stick with physique, or could I in some way combine the to for a more accurate rig?

Sorry if I fell in this from the wrong angle,but as soon as I saw this post I knew an answer would not be too far away..:D

If I remember right, Autodesk has stopped the development of physique with Max R3, so I would go for Skin, even in Max 4. It doesn't matter what kind of object you use for bones, works with biped too.

Wait for PEN, he can tell more about it.

I've been using Skin modifier for some months, and I feel more comfortable with it than woth Physique. In MAX 8 there are a few Skin tools that let you work faster than with Physique, I think.

But you can do the skinning even with Physique or Skin: correct deformation depends on the time you spend weighting vertex ;)
