Yay. :) Can't wait to get started.
I just landed a freelance gig though, that'll keep me 300% busy for a month, so chances are I won't finish. Still, I'll give it a shot!
02-10-2006, 09:53 AM
Forgot to specify, I'll be doing "The ship".
02-10-2006, 12:03 PM

02-11-2006, 09:03 AM
Good luck !
I hope it'll be a pirate ship ?

02-13-2006, 11:39 AM
Thanks guys, you're too kind!
Yes, it'll be a pirate ship (or similar, from that age), with torn sails and all.
My first step is to model the ship (gathering reference right now).
-Because I know I'll never completely finish putting the "finishing touches" on the water, so if I start with the water, I'll never get to working on the ship. ;)
However, since the water is what the challenge is about, I'll have to do some darn quick speed modelling, and get the ship over with quick.
Will update soon.

First update, the ship.... the reference is mainly The Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean, the goal is to have a modelled ship by the end of the day.... rather optimistic, perhaps...
02-19-2006, 08:00 PM
...this is all for today, I'll be back tomorrow! :)
02-19-2006, 08:26 PM
The ship is coming out really good! Well done!:buttrock:Looking forward to the pirate-like ship!
02-20-2006, 11:18 PM
Thanks! Here's today's detail.
Cheers, folks! :)
02-21-2006, 11:35 PM
Didn't get a lot of time today, but tomorrow I expect to give it a big nod. :)
02-22-2006, 06:20 AM
nice ship its looking great, this gonna be a great simulation
02-22-2006, 07:14 AM
Thank you, I've been forced to up my standards after I saw your chinese fishing boat. :)
02-22-2006, 08:29 PM
Yeah the chinese fishing boat looks nice, but yours is really coming along too! I'm really liking it so far, can't wait to see more. I love the style of ship you chose.
02-22-2006, 11:45 PM
@Rusdom: thanks! :)
I feel like I'm moving at snail speed, every day I hope I'll finish modelling the next day...
02-23-2006, 09:21 AM
Fantastic stuff! Going to be great learning from you guys! I will probably enter the next fx challenge but wouldn't have the time for this one unfortunately!
02-23-2006, 02:26 PM
:thumbsup:this going to be great, i had the pirateship idea also but since your making it already i will leave you with the honours.
the model is becoming a real ship more and more every time i see it.
Maybe i will join the wars, just need to find myself some time for it.
Goodluck i'll be watching you (^_^)
02-23-2006, 09:31 PM
This ship is looking awesome :applause: , the stairs and the cannons are looking great, and I love the barrels, just the size of that barrel next to the cannon seems a bit out of scale. Besides that, great work! :D
02-24-2006, 11:36 PM
the model is very good indeed.
Will be watching you too:thumbsup:
02-25-2006, 10:25 AM
That's absolutely awesome, Jonas! :scream: You really got that 'main shape' very nice! I'm looking forward very much for the ocean itselfes! :)
What about the freelance-project? Is it an interesting one? :D
Have fun & Luck! :)
02-28-2006, 06:13 PM
Thanks for the encouragements, guys! :)
...working on the back now...
EDIT, forgot to answer this:
What about the freelance-project? Is it an interesting one?
It was, actually, but I had to decline because I'm too busy with a deadline at work. The project was an environment for a cinematic for E3, which would be really cool for my CV. Technically, I don't have time for this ocean clip either, and the ocean clip doesn't even pay, so you may ask why I didn't cancel the ocean challenge to do the freelance clip... Answer is, no-one is gonna sue me if I don't finish the ocean challenge. ;)
That looks awesome
What app are you using?
02-28-2006, 08:37 PM
Hey Max, thanks! :)
I'm using 3dsmax 7.0.
03-01-2006, 03:33 PM
...beginning to look ship-ish. :) The sails and masts are still temp.
03-02-2006, 10:07 PM
...finalizing sails and ropes...
I still need some lanterns and a pattern on the back of the cabin.
And those large, tall triangular shapes on the sides will be replaced with patterns of rope.
Beautiful  . Could you show some wireframes? I like to see how skilled modelers work :)
03-03-2006, 07:10 AM
Aww, you flatter!
here's a wire....
The sails will be smoothed to a higher poly count.
03-03-2006, 07:47 AM
very very nice model
03-03-2006, 03:23 PM
Great jonas! well done! keep it up!:)
03-10-2006, 12:54 PM
Hi, Jonas :)
Your ship is fantastic.
the pink plan will be with opacity map?
03-10-2006, 02:26 PM
the pink plan will be with opacity map?
No, I won't use opacity maps as they don't work well with Max's render elements (they will render as solid in zdepth and lighting passes  ). I plan on building all the ropes and knots.
But unfortunately, I doubt I will finish in time, as I have zero time to work on it for the next 14 days.
03-10-2006, 04:07 PM
Hey too bad i was looking forward to your results!
Oh well one man overboard!
03-13-2006, 08:25 AM
Well I will finish (to much effort put into it now, to just skip it), just don't know if it will be in time for deadline. ;)
03-13-2006, 03:51 PM
well then hope its finished before I retire!
jussing you! you better finish it!
Comon man YOU CAN DO IIT!~
03-17-2006, 11:38 PM
Hope to see an update soon. The dateline is fast approaching, so you have enought time to render the final scene.
03-27-2006, 07:31 AM
so chances are I won't finish. Still, I'll give it a shot!
Yup, I'm not finishing. Sorry.
I hope lots of other people submit their entries, there were lots of really cool water preview renders all around.
