View Full Version : Why LW cant import .3ds correctly?

Its not the first time its happen... pretty annoying.

the c4d of a friend just import it right...

im sure other people ad that problem... is there any work around?

I don't know if this would help, but it might.
You could try exporting as an OBJ and then importing the OBJ into LW. That might help. Seems like all apps like OBJ files.

This is only a guess, but I used to have the same problem with very old 3ds files.

In the times when 3d studio ran from MS-DOS, when the workflow was separated in shapes, lofts, modelling, texturing, and animation, sometimes if you made instancing or moved geometry about in the animation module-thingy, the resulting 3ds file did not see the changes. In the .prj file it was ok, but not in the 3ds.

That happened to me once.

I would also go for the obj format.

Uh,why don't you just use the free FBX plugin from Alias? Check the "Character Studio to LW" link below.

Lightwave (or 3ds, not sure) doesn't understand groups, references, instances etc properly.
If you are coming from Max (this may work on other 3d progs), i suggest that you get rid of groups, collapse everything down into meshes and reset the Xform's (utilities tab).

thanks for all the answers... Ill watch all your post carefully tomorow morning...

yes it was converted from .max to 3ds by the 3D departement here at Buzz... I should ask them an Obj...

free fbx plugin?! arrrgh... tomorow!
