02 February 2006, 02:39 PM story

after world war-X, where nuclear weapon is highly use, there is no winner in the war, only survivor, the massive destruction cause the planet fully cover with smog (dust?) total human population drop until 0.1%, human race lost every thing during the war, what they get is only a mask, the mask to keep them survive in the outdoor.

after a few years, with unknown reason, the smog (haze, dust?) start diverging…unveiling the blue sky, the sun light first touch on the land, grass start growing again, flowers…

a young girl won’t believe what she just saw, she takes off her mask, enjoying the fresh air…she remember the flowers, green grass and the blue sky when she was 5 years old and her parents, who scarified in the war…

but her little brother is so curious, what the hell is all those colorful thing, and why there is bright light from the sky?

Amazing. Also, I hate you ;)

I'm busy re-drawing my sketch with a stylus pen at the moment, shh, the boss is out :)
Very, very cool.

02 February 2006, 04:02 PM
Ian, don't hate me, I won't tell your boss...:scream:

I couldn't wait to see your idea, and also others who will submit later...

But there is Champions League game (Che vs Bar) waiting for me:bounce:...

I'll check yours thread tomorrow, see ya!

02 February 2006, 06:01 PM
Excellent sketch Loon.

02 February 2006, 11:45 PM
So different to the reminder I get each morning when starting up my Animator pdf. Your terrifing creature is "intense". Nicely done!!

Fantastic sketch!!

How are we suppose to compete with you!! :banghead:

This competition started with a few threads, then all of a sudden like a school project thats due the following day, we all flood the server with our ideas. This competition is going to be hard to win!! So much good talent!!

I remember trying to racing a man on a ten speed when I was a kid and he said that by edging his front wheel further forward in front of the opposing rider that you can cause them to loose motivation and make them to give up trying to come back and beat you.

I'm middle aged now. I hope this still doesn't apply.

Great to have you in this competition. Your talented is very much appreciated here!

02 February 2006, 11:57 PM
Given him a run for his money buggsy...

Only 8 hours left until the contest doors shut for entries. Still have some folks out there without any sketches. Stage 2 sketches are necessary to enter.

02 February 2006, 07:49 AM
I remember trying to racing a man on a ten speed when I was a kid

My motivation to beat Loon (hehehehehehe): I used to run for the North West, and in one 200m race I had a terrible start and was miles behind (miles behind in a 200m race is impressive ;) But! I ended up winning the race by 0.02 of a second.

Take that loon!!! Look behind you! Muhahahahaha!

02 February 2006, 02:52 PM
thanks for the comments...:)

I didn't notice that I am so dangerous:twisted:... actually I don't think my work is good enough, there are still lot of EI master much much better than me...

for me you are always ahead of me... the image you shown proof it...

02 February 2006, 10:19 PM
Who said anything about dangerous?! :hmm:
For the record I didn't think you looked anything like your "fierce creature"!

So you want to play mind games (this is a competition after all). I'll just have to go on and beat you then! :wavey:

Simple as that hey! (I wish!)

02 February 2006, 11:34 PM
for me you are always ahead of me... the image you shown proof it...

Hey Loon, i'll trade my rendering skills for your sketching skills any day of the week

02 February 2006, 12:17 AM
right, the sketch looks great.
i can't wait to see some modeling screenshots!

03 March 2006, 10:32 AM
quite busy for a late reply...

Buggsy let finish this competition and see who is the winner....:D

Reuben you should attend this competition, you skill will benefits all of us...

bronco thanks for the nice word... will show something later...

03 March 2006, 11:21 AM
very first modeling on the little boy...
the Ear will be latter...

03 March 2006, 11:28 AM
very nice!
is this silo?

03 March 2006, 12:34 PM
Yes, it is from Silo

and some update...i've added the ear, and improve the topo with "spin edge"
C&C are welcome...:)

by the way, check this thread if any one interested in Silo SSS mysterious trick... (

03 March 2006, 12:54 PM
this is developing nicely. i avoided the ear so far, its just to comlex for me right now, but sometime i will try it. no critic from my side.

03 March 2006, 02:34 PM
a very first test GI render, total 2 lights, one with transmission shadow, no shader, Encage subdivided once, it took 2-3minutes on my old 1.6ghz P4, but if i increase Encage subdivision to 2, it tooks about 20 minutes to render...

I'll need a new machine!!!

C&C are welcome...

03 March 2006, 03:34 PM
wow, unbelievable there is not even a shader applied.
looking closely: the lower part of the ear looks a little funny... :)

03 March 2006, 04:06 PM
Looks like young Anakin Skywalker, very attractive model you made!. :applause:
I wanna see him with tex and hair.

03 March 2006, 04:05 PM
Uwe you are right, there is something wrong to the lower ear (what do we call that?) I've modify a bit, will post something after I finish the body...

yoshiki ishizaka さん、お元気ですか?
almost forgot all those japanese word...since I stop learning almost 10 years ago...
thanks for the comments, I didn't notice he looks like Anakin and not intend to do so...
I hope I can finish modeling his body ASAP, so I can play rigging!

03 March 2006, 04:14 PM
OH! the modeling is way behind my schedule, this Boy modeling should have completed by last week...

Can I finish? Can I finish? Can I finish? Can I finish?

03 March 2006, 12:12 AM
Looking good Loon !, keep it up you can do it !!!

03 March 2006, 11:19 AM
modeling on the young girl, actually a fast tweak on the first model, the result...
just incase it doesn't looks like a girl, I paint her some hair, make-up a bit...

03 March 2006, 11:33 AM
this is really great!
how are you texturing the models? unwrap UVs? can silo supply good, usable UVs?

03 March 2006, 11:57 AM
Thanks, silo doesn't unwrap UV YET! (Silo 2 is coming this month?)
I'll use Blender which is good enough for the task.

My only problem is the hair, FiberForge is good, but to create the hair similar to this will take a lot of time, I might go for clipping map...

03 March 2006, 12:11 PM
Looking great loon!

Keep going! Breath!

03 March 2006, 01:39 PM
Terema kasih loon san. :) I traveled twice to your country, once by myself, and once with my wife. people`s tenderness and smile are so impressive, someday I wanna visit again :)

BTW,I admired careful work and model become more handsome.

Can I finish? Can I finish? Can I finish? Can I finish?

Of course,you can!

03 March 2006, 06:58 PM
the progress is moving slow recently, have not work on this for 2 days due to some other works....

Anyway here are my status, The charecter modeling is done, except some texture mapping, and the girl hair is not done yet... I try to use FiberForge, but couldn't get the result i wanted, so I'll go for poly model the hair in silo...

the grass is from FiberForge, The plants model in silo also, Terrain from image2Mesh+Silo, and the some clouds test, still haven't decide how i fill the sky yet...

no GI render yet, I know it will take quite a lot of time , II'll continue on this after I finish my work in hand, probably next week...

see ya!

03 March 2006, 01:56 AM
Hi Loon,
Everything looks great. The clouds look amazing!
I'm envious  'cause I can't model a human figure to save my life!

Can't wait for the finished image. Go home team :bounce:

03 March 2006, 01:58 AM
Great work Loon! Clipping map for hair? I'm affraid I don't get it :curious:

03 March 2006, 09:51 AM
loon, this is more than nice.
so, just out of curiousity, how did you do the clouds? they look really beautiful.
i can't really find anything to critic. :applause:

you have the force loon!

03 March 2006, 10:44 AM
Thanks for the nice word and sorry for the late reply, the clouds is created from Dante together with Dante clouds shader…

Here are the background pass… I'll finish the front later (I'll composite the two in that permited?)

I’ve use 15 variation of different clouds ‘Normal Maps’ map on a plane, but I've increase the contrast on the Alpha channel, hope I'm not disqualify on this :), than I use dante again to replicate to fill the sky…

and here are the 15 variation Normal maps ( for download, to those who interested...2.5mb

03 March 2006, 11:12 AM
Good man Loon! Thanks for the Maps!

So, I'm sure you will be fine compositing the BG and FG passes in Photoshop, don't know about your Alpha antics though we'll have to see what the competition overlord says about that.

It looks tasty! I like the atmosphere, can't wait to see the final composite,

03 March 2006, 12:41 PM
the modify on the alpha channel is brighten the grey area into white using the levels it won't make a thin clouds (yes I want Thick clouds)

03 March 2006, 03:00 PM
pretty nice!

only thing i have to mention: the clouds look a little bit small. compared to the groundtexture and the lightbeams they seem to be tiny and very low.
if you compare the datails on the ground near the right lightbeam and go straight up the light you'll see what i mean. don't get me wrong, the mood is beautifull, but the scale doesn't seem to fit.
...or maybe i am just dizzy from working 3 days straight with only 5 hours sleep :banghead:

go loon!

03 March 2006, 09:44 PM
Loon, the clouds have a great volumetric look about them! You might set dante to rotate each object differently to add more randomness. Better check with Brian about brightening the alpha channel. Doubt if it is allowed and wouldn't want to see you disqualified after all your hard work. Looking forward to seeing your final image.

03 March 2006, 06:06 AM
I found this message from Brian's Q&A :deal:thread... anyway I'll post to request a clear answer...

Ok.. let me clarify this. My biggest concern are indivduals using photoshop to touch up mistakes or to add/remove things that can't be done in EIAS. Compositing layers together is permissable because some users have slower machines and lesser amounts of RAM and they need to composite their work together in stages. As long as you are not painting, using a special non-EIAS plugin, or any other tool that modifies the pixels (outside of compositing) you're good. Using transfer modes between layers like add, lighten, darken, inverse, etc.. are acceptable because they exist in EIAS. Masking is only acceptable if the mask was generated through EIAS as an alpha channel.

03 March 2006, 07:12 AM
See my response in Q&A. You may proceed.

03 March 2006, 01:32 PM
Hey Loon
Your stuff is looking really good. I can't wait to see your foreground elements composited on those clouds.

Top notch work! :applause:

03 March 2006, 05:35 AM
yeap here is my final image...

03 March 2006, 05:45 AM
not too satisfy actually, due to some other job, i can't focus into thes contest...
I'll post some WIP later...

03 March 2006, 05:55 AM
We always want to do more, make it better and try this and that... All in all, I think your final image is very good. Excellent work!

03 March 2006, 06:32 AM
We always want to do more, make it better and try this and that... All in all, I think your final image is very good. Excellent work!

Thanks richard,
you are correct, just let it go... :)

but i will improve this later... somehow...

03 March 2006, 07:44 AM
Well done, Loon. I hope you'll post the WIPs on your blog. In fact it would be nice if all the WIPs for all finalists are featured on the EI website.

03 March 2006, 07:49 AM
well loon, i think you did it ... again! great work!

03 March 2006, 07:54 AM
Fantastic work Loon!
Nice detail work and composition. Your modeling skills are great! The background really works well. Again congrats!

My favorite saying is "Art is never completed, just abandoned" which is so true.

03 March 2006, 09:40 AM
Jaw dropping modelling loon, fantastic! And the composition really 'fits' very well indeed, great space and atmosphere, I love the way the background seems to be closing in! Great job on the hair too :)

03 March 2006, 09:53 AM
Hey Loon, I'm not sure why I seem to really miss out on your forum here. You were kicking but over here. Great modeling, nice character work. Sorry I don't see more of you stuff in the EI web site. Awesome Job. I like it a great deal.

03 March 2006, 01:27 PM
So moderate. I feel hope and future from this picture. Nicely done.

03 March 2006, 01:42 PM
I knew your final composite would look great!

Congrats Loon

03 March 2006, 06:30 AM
Thanks! I appreciate the comment from you all...

after looking into the image again and again, I found that...
1. the face expression is not there, the girl should look happy, the boy should show some curiosity
2. I need to put some details on the shirt (the bone rig can't produce that... I need to work that in Silo
3. consider adding some atmosphere on the front pass, probably Glare and Glow.
4. UV Map!

I'll work on this again after the winner announce...

03 March 2006, 09:01 AM
As I promise to post the WIP, I'll start with hair first...

the hair is texture map, I start create with a flat 'Grid' in silo (that is the name in silo)
than export obj to Blender just to assign a UV space (use the whole UV space, else there might some positioning problem in EIAS), than bring it back to Silo, Silo 1.4 doesn't have UV mapping yet, but i found it 'remember' any import object contains UV data, and export without any problem.

duplicate the 'Grid' and start position and modify to covered the head. but keep in mind that Do not add any vertex or edge.

because I don't plan to animate the hair, I decide to Merge the hair in to 1 group, it will be easier for me to manage it in EIAS, (don't worry about losing the UV data)
but IF I plan to animate the hair, I won't 'Plant' the the hair in silo, I'll do that in EIAS...
After satisfy positioning the hair, Export the model to obj. than convert the obj to fact with all the check box uncheck (except the 'process vertex normals' & 'fix smooth shading')

and here are the diffuse map cilpping map and specular map.

import the fact model into EIAS, under the shading tab of the info window, check using UV space and uncheck Normalise

other tutorial

Loon :)
Still no good english....

03 March 2006, 02:21 PM
That is so great! Thank you Loon.
Stop worrying about your english...It is perfectly adequate.

03 March 2006, 04:03 PM
Thanks for sharing Loon.

03 March 2006, 05:47 PM
Wow! This is the first tutorial on hair I have ever seen in EI. Didn't know people were doing this kind of stuff.

I may take a look at Silo. I sort of brushed it off before but now that I see what people are doing with it.

I really like your edge loop layout on the face. Is there a tutorial for that as well or link? I haven't done a human face but I hope to soon.

BTW, the english is better than mine and I'm American.
