3DEffects

... or maybe a village wiped out by a tornado?

I filmed some reference videos/photos for this in the Caribbean last month.

PS And the dateline will be killer too

A pirate ship caught in a storm?I like the sound of that!At the one side I also like that idea, as it can be very spectacular, especially when you think of the fact it will all be 3D... At the ๓ther side it would be very cool to do something with pirates and live-action; to get a sort of 'Pirates of the Caribbean'-likey thing.

If we have to make 'just a ship and a sea' completely in 3D, the real 'cinematographic aspect' will be lost. Which would be a bit sad, as we now have a fanclub with 14 members already (read: 14 extras ;) ).

We'll see! Roberto will manage it, especially when you know that 'he has been strugling with the idea for more than a year', isn't it?

I wonder the same as Joseph... I need something to live for, now the Close Encounters has been past! :p

And also: I myself would still better like a Pirates-challenge in which we can incorperate live-action stuff (unless full 3D is also... cool ;) ). Maybe 2 ways; do if via 100% 3D, or via VFX & Live action?

Well I wan not going to add a live action cathegory, but dutchman, you have inspired me.
The rules will be up soon.

So for a water challenge, would a month be long enough?

Hey roberto plz keep both live action + 3D(but it should be realistic)...maybe i will take digi cam
on rent.. :D

But one month?? wasn't it one month for last challange? if u won't extend deadline and all would wanna submit before one month deadline then i don't see any problem.

2 months would be ok .... what you think?

02 February 2006, 09:28 AM
Two months is a long time to live for a VFX challenge.... I'd rather have just a month, and then do a shorter shot.

Of course, to this the obvious reply would be "you don't need to use the full two months if you don't want to, just use one".

But, my reply to that is that I want to keep up with the rest, I don't want to fall behind. ;)

Either way, I think I'm in!

Cheers everybody,
- Jonas

The reason i said 2 months is because Roberto normally extend deadline, 1 month is no enough time to do a good shot most entrys wont finish on time... when people can only work 2 or 3 hours a day and water is really difficult anyway...

I think I will try this challenge !!!

Please no live action! That will not enable me to participate in the challenge (which is a reason why I declined from this one). A month would be just fine!:)

Yeah, I too would like a challange without CG this time.. It will still be great VFX shots IMO. But two months may be better as most of us may only have some hours a day, at most, to work with this. Better to end up with something nice and useful for a reel than something less useful. Umm, what did I just say.. Nevermind the thought was good..

Cheers 3DEffects btw, hope all is good with you.

Take care guys,

Sounds like a plan to me, a good compromise. Nice of you to point out that we should render the last two weeks. Somehow most of us seems to postpone that till the last minute...

You can add live action if you want, BUT, the key of the challenge is to do a CG ocean.

RobertoOrtiz

Ok I am writing the rules, but here is a preview of them.

It will be a simulation challenge, so realism is key.
there will be three categories for the challenge:

THE BEACH (Waves gently rolling on a beach.)
THE OPEN OCEAN (Ocean waves. )
THE SHIP (A ship moving up an down in the Ocean.)
Extra bonus if you can simulate storm weather on any of the three
categories. You may add live action people walking in the virtual ocean, or in the deck), but the key is the simulation.

I've no idea how I'm going to attack this yet but I want to try it.

Hi Roberto,

Seems like this challenge might have been written for me. I have just started a thread on the Blender CG forum.

I'm releasing a new tutorial on ocean creation for Blender users this week from my website.

www.cogfilms.com (http://www.cogfilms.com)

Anyway, I'm in for entry to this latest challenge. However, as this would be my first entry what's the process? How do you register etc? and when is the challenge going to be annouced?

Anyway great idea and I look forward to stretching my meagre skills by entering.

Hello guys,

well i was doing some quick test of ocean foam shader..i thought i should post it here...
i havn't tried particles yet..for foams..will do some tests when challange will be announced.

Seriously sounds like tons of fun, and I'm thinking that I'm in on it.

I've been doing some technical R&D work this week on getting decent looking spray/foam/particles generated by a collision with a boat.

I was hoping to use this as an excuse to immerse myself in Maya fluids, but I haven't been able to find a way to drive collisions with the ocean preview plane yet, and I know I want dynamic spray, so I may have to check out the RealFlow demo...

Without plugin... it's very challanging to create foams..
Creating ocean foam shader is very tedious job...we can use smoke, noise or celluler to fake foam but it's not that easy...
i used mentalray but i m not happy with quick test.
the best way to do is i think in composition....with lots of layers...:)

Ive been trying to animate procedurally proper waves without plugin and @_*($&)&*# its not that easy.. i thought a simple noise modd and some animated displace but its not that convincing
