Shahryar is betrayed by his wife, which makes him go mad and believe that all women will, in the end, betray him. So every night for three years the mad king takes a wife and has her executed the next morning, until he marries the beautiful and clever Scheherazade, the vizier’s daughter. For 1001 nights, Scheherazade tells Shahryar a story, stopping at dawn with a cliffhanger, forcing him to keep her alive for another day so that she can complete the tale.

A quickie I only had 30 min before I have to leave for work but wanted to get something wacom out. Play with Lighting
May do one in Artrage at work
Photoshop Wacom, 25min
01-07-2006, 08:41 PM
I took a little bit longer on this than usual.
1 hour 37min/PS7/wacom

2 hours | PS Elements
Se7enthcin, love your colors and the mood they produce, really helps the idea of a mad king
Zyrinx, intruiging way of potraying this story, I like it
01-07-2006, 10:18 PM
Zyrinx I like the expression on the Kings face :D
se7enthcin That kind looks pure evil, I love his suit because it looks like a ribcage, all bony and bloody. Wonderful. Oh and Thank you so much for your tips on trying to fix my file problem in the last sketch, I will try it with this sketch.
Victoria Oh me like! Nice style, very clean almost cartoony. If you go back to The first 1001 nights sketches "The Sultan's Daugher" you will see that this is kind of what I had attempted to draw but failed miserably. You did a great job, congratz.
All these 1001 nights topics make me want to reread the book, its been a while.
01-07-2006, 10:27 PM
what happened after 1001 nights?
01-07-2006, 10:46 PM
Zyrinx: looking forward to your update :)
se7enthcin: gritty and cool! i agree with Ines about the ribcage
Victoria: vibrant colors!
very very strange colors this time ... somehow i like them & hate them at the same time
ps + tablet | 2.5h
se7 : yeah i like the rib cage form too
Victoria : hehe i like her story magic clouds :)
deaderthanred : mhhm nice clothing maybe you should be my kings taylor :D

Here is my effort. 1.5 hours... I was trying to make a angry king he has just discovered this wife's betrayal. ... Lol, but he just looks constipated. :D
ni-cdp/b] If I remember correctly he figures she is a smart lady and falls in love. :D
[b]deaderthanred Holy Guacamoli, Awesome Clothes textures.. I agree with Vahn you should make all the kings clothes :D
Vahn Great sketch, you captured the story telling playtime moment very well. She is very pretty and playful looking. great job.
Victoria - very funny and poetic pic at the same time... I just love her slightly bored expression
Vahn - I need to make a text template for: just great, man!
01-08-2006, 12:23 AM
Had to do another from work, thought of this on the way in and couldn't help myself
Deaderthanred, I'm not sure if I'm going to work more on the first post. I have to close at work so it would be really late to finish. I was just playing around with using a wacom and trying lighting effects (inspired by your sinbad post)
InesD - did you get the colors working in photoshop?
01-08-2006, 12:56 AM
lol! Zyrinx, your trailing bride heads pic is even better :D
InesD: thanks! the expression on the king in your image looks horrified to me, not constipated lol btw try some custom brushes in Photoshop, they help add more to an image with less time. Goro has some really awesome brushes posted in the sticky thread at the top of this forum, but i can't use them since i don't use CS:(
the patterns on the clothes in my pic are just some ps motif/print brushes and i added some random squiggles lol
Vahn: thanks! all your images are vibrant with colors (my sketches on the other hand are always abit too dark for some reason :curious: )

Not every day you get to draw a mad king :bounce: , 2hrs 10min, PhotoPlus, Wacom.
01-08-2006, 01:44 AM
Painter IX... 1 hour or so. I wanted to promote the mood of it by colors... hopefully it is successful.
01-08-2006, 02:13 AM
The king ponders his next move...
PS and Wacom. No scans. Total about 2hrs (with a few distractions in between).
01-08-2006, 02:19 AM
This is my first post. I took about an hour, I used Art Rage WITH A MOUSE! I hope you like it.
01-08-2006, 02:21 AM
Victoria - I love your style and colors.
Vahn- I think the colors are sweet.
Zyrinx - That's funny as hell. You really need to get a tablet!
Probablly a couple of hours on this. I now notice that the body on the lady is way too short for the arms. I also think that the chair of the king is too angled.
01-08-2006, 02:52 AM
Fal$e - I just got a wacom two nights ago, but it's at home. All I have at work is a mouse, artrage and paint. You'll see varying quality in my work depending on where I'm at. Once I get used to the wacom that is.
01-08-2006, 03:30 AM
Time: 50 min
I started out with a photo of meat that I found (http://www.emediawire.com/prfiles/2004/09/15/158782/kobe-rib-roast.jpg) online, then played with it in photoshop.
01-08-2006, 04:15 AM
OpenCanvas 4, Wacom; A little over two hours
Indeed - good idea with starting with meat. This is a very disturbing image, and captures his madness well. The figures as part of the crown are a nice touch.
fal$eProfit - good command of form on the lounging king; The folds of cloth on the legs and arms are also quite natural; I think the tilt of the chair actually plays well in the image... leading the eye to the king and makes him feel wrong -- MAD, I tell, you MAD!
mahir - excellent pose; nice eye for costume. I like the blue lighting on the arms
dreammaster - the pallete is well chosen, and does set the mood appropriately. The stringy hear and opulant clothes pair nicely with madness.
redsquirrel - good composition; The king in your drawing seems not so much evil as troubled. The executioner in the background is good. The picture as a whole seems fuzzy - almost dreamlike.
zyrinx - very funny idea
inesD - the turban is well done, but the rest of the clothes seem very flat. Also (on my monitor, at least), the color of the hair disappears into the background.
vaughn - exellent blend of style and realism. The color pallete is a bit hard to look at for too long due to their strangeness.... but it works in this picture!
deaderthanread - the robe and turban coloring is amazing! Lots of very good detail as well. I like that the face is mostly in shadow
Victoria - nice style and color. The story coming to life as she speaks is a good idea, as is using the story as a light source
se7evthcin - Disturbing. Texture and light are nice. The ribcage is appropriately gory.
Zyrinx - an interesting experiment with line and color, which works well for the image. The idea is a good take on the story as well.

Photoshop around 1 to 2 hours.
It was a hard topic
01-08-2006, 06:47 AM
here is my contribution.. took like 2 hours? :p I know I suck.. but it was really fun to make.. and I don't know if i stuck to the topic really well.. if not i can add a bunch of blood if that helps? :D
01-08-2006, 07:02 AM
great start though geta-ve. keep it up. I think your concept is hilarious zyrinx. nice lighting deaderthanred, and I like your mood, se7enthicin.
Painter, under an hour.
01-08-2006, 07:22 AM
Well this one is a bit risque, but there's no naughty bits so I thought it was alright. It took me about 4 hours, but I played scrabble and then went on a walk to the park. So I don't reallt know how long it took.... Wacom, Procreate Painter Classic.
PS..: I HATE DRAWING FEET. AND THERE WERE FOUR OF THEM.
01-08-2006, 08:13 AM
Drone2222 - The feet look great, I hate drawing things I can't draw. In your case maybe you just don't like feet.
Geta-Ve - I love it very Kirbydreamland'esk the light source is consistent, good colors and cute character, go with it!
Indeed - Crazy! good stuff
Wiggin - Great start and Welcome, keep it up homey
01-08-2006, 10:03 AM
Here is my contribution.. took about 6 hours total in Photoshop and Painter.
01-08-2006, 01:59 PM
As the night advances, the mangled body of his latest concubine besides him,
The vengeful king with his never ending sorrow sinks further
into the darkness of infuriating delirium.
This is the first time, he took the matter into his own hands,
with the anticipation of the vizier’s daughter arrival next morning
could not delay the inevitable any further.
The indifferent loyalty in his beasts eyes reassures his quest to rid off evil…
And the timeless truth resonates through the hollowness of king’s castle
Obsolete power corrupts absolutely…
What if the corrupted also has been swallowed by an uncontrollable insanity…
PhotoShop + 3 hours

Mecha Hate Chimp - Thank you for your comment. You got quite a sinister looking king there. Very nice.
Indeed - Reminds me Henry Darger. Very creative indeed.
