hey i'm a bit lost here... cant really remmeber what happend in the thrid voyage of sinbad... so can any1 give me a short summery fo the story?

01 January 2006, 08:57 AM
i didnt know the story either until I found this on Wikipedia:

The Third Voyage of Sindbad the Sailor

On his next voyage, Sindbad's ship anchored at an island inhabited by hairy dwarves about two feet tall. These tiny men were very savage and took the ship, leaving the crew marooned on the island. The crew soon learned that the island was ruled by terrible one-eyed giants. The giants imprisoned the sailors and began to eat them, one each day. Finally Sindbad and a few of his crew mates used a wooden skewer to put out the eye of the giant who guarded them and escaped on rafts they had made while the other giants threw great rocks after them.

The rafts took Sindbad and his fellow survivors to another island. On this island a giant serpent began to prey on the men, devouring them until only Sindbad was left. Fortunately Sindbad was able to signal a passing ship and was rescued.

The first part of this adventure is generally assumed to be an adaptation of the adventure of Odysseus and Polyphemus the cyclops which first appeared in the Odyssey.

Sounds like a fun topic. :)

About as finished as I care to make it with an el
cheapo coloring job. But I had fun with the story.

RobertoOrtiz: Oh yeah, why didn't I think of that? :)

01 January 2006, 09:07 PM
A quickie: photoshop, wacom, no ref. 30 minutes

01 January 2006, 11:19 PM
Trying some new things in Photoshop, and I thought it would be nice taking part in the Sketch of the Day, after a long time of lurking ^^;;
So here is my modest contribution to the adbentures of Sinbad :
PhotoshopCS - 1h15 - Wacom

01 January 2006, 11:26 PM
Hey jŚnnis, thanks for the info! There sure seems to be a lot of Wikipedia usage in the DSF lately!

I really liked the idea of being attacked by 2 ft. tall baddies... lots of small creatures are almost scarier than one large one... hmmmm...

About an hour on Photoshop CS on a Cintiq.

01 January 2006, 11:36 PM
Some pretty good stuff. 1 mean cyclop + 1 nasty serpent = 1 escaped Sinbad!

PS and Wacom. No scans. Total 2 hrs.

01 January 2006, 11:54 PM
aelwine: welcome, and that's one cool sketch! :)

1hr, photoshop7 (

01 January 2006, 11:57 PM

my start into this new year just did not feel complete until my first sketch here...

"now this is going to hurt just a little bit..."

mahir, can't see your pic...

01 January 2006, 12:11 AM
Mr. Mu I did put it in my post and it displayed fine then. After you mentioned it I went and took a look again and it was gone. So I went and edited it but it came back again (even though I didn't change a single thing). Strange. Maybe it was my server acting up or something. You can check out my image now.

PS: Your image is cringe-inducing! :)

01 January 2006, 12:17 AM
There some great ideas here.

aelwine (member.php?u=138661) is awesome and aaraaf (member.php?u=105310) too..

good stuff everyone. Glad I've joined the fun.

01 January 2006, 12:21 AM

JŚnnis - Thanks for the info
Aelwine - Looks like the things you tried are working
Freakwncy - Welcome, great look
Deaderthanred - Wow, great lighting, love the character
Vahn - Freaking Awesome Great pose and proportions

Here's 3 or so hours of me screwing around on my new wacom in photoshop, you guys all make it looks so easy. The cyclops, the snake and the men got cut. Tricky to get used to.
Critique very welcomed

Going to try a fancy lighting dsg tomorrow.
Yay! Finally got a Wacom, no more mouse!

Sinbad's anchored ship.
I used many ship references.. so this one ship probably looks like 10 different types of vessels.. so I hope there is not hardcore maritime history experts here :D

Took me about 1 hour and 30 minutues.

edit: Wow... why do my colors look so crappy! They are different when I make them into jpgs from a photoshop file, even at 100%quality.. I am viewing them from the same screen.. grrrr anyone know?

Kalakal It looks like the monster is giving Sinbad a welcome necklace :)
Psudonym I like your illustration for the characters especially the front two. Most the The one pointing at his eye.
budji Thats a scary cyclops! he has scary fangs,.. for the fire I you might want to add some smoke around it,
jannis he is hideous! great job. I like his happy fat face.
Freakwncy Welcome :wavey: nice choice of black and white. I really like your compostion of having silloutes. I like the distant looking silloute of simbad, you succeded in giving it depth.
exigentCan you post a larger image, I cant see the details. From what I see nice job capturing movement and cool snake
aelwine He almost looks friendly with that smile.
aaraf Great sketch, I like your visualization of the dwarves and you caputured the movement of Sinbad great. ... Ohhh you have a Cintiq! I am so jealous. ... I ve only seen them in action but never tired one.. what do you think about it? Is it all that it seems to be?
mahir :D Reminds me of the old king kong fighting the giant snake. Lol.. I just now noticed your little Sinbad running away.
Deaderthanred Oooo interesting view of the cyclops, definetly different from what I have usually seen. I like it he is defiently more monstrous and really scary.. i love that little light he has under his mouth. Makes me think of those fishes that live in the deepest parts of the ocean. Oh and i love the little guy sprinting as fast as he can in the front. :D
Mr.Mu Why does this make me think of the dentist... oh yeah it must be your title
Vahn Oh god that looks terribly painful. Nice sketch, as always, my only suggestion would be to show the cyclops mouth open like in pain not just closed. He looks too calm.
Zyrinx Ha! :scream: I love this character, he has so much personality, and is pure little evil.
BishopLynx Nice take on it, :) I like how the dad looks Sinbaish (if that makes any sense.)

01 January 2006, 05:14 AM
I just wanted to play with color for the most part.

40 min/PS7/Wacom

01 January 2006, 05:21 AM
Vahn: great sketch! (as always :) )

Zyrinx: thanks! yours is excellent, very clean style and amusing character too

BishopLynx: nice idea and great style

InesD: thanks! yep it's a deep-sea-fish "appendage" so that he has enough light to "dine" with :D lol tho it's just my lazy work-around as i was wondering how to add a second light source. as for colors and photoshop, yeah i notice my colors sorta switch abit when i change to jpg.. i'm guessing it's because jpgs have a more limited range of colors (web-safe or something like that)? i'm not sure, either way, but usually if you use alot of color shading/tones in an image, it's not really obvious (usually warm colors tend to shift hues the most when saving out to jpgs for me)

se7enthcin (member.php?u=145100): that's quite a nice color combination! :)

01 January 2006, 05:46 AM
InesD - hmm do you use Flatten Image command? What is your Mode set at for color...? Did someone eat crayons and sneeze on your monitor? Hmmm that's a tough one

01 January 2006, 06:51 AM

1.5 hrs.. photoshop and making excuses for not having a wacom yet

everybody - great work today, good colors, nice concepts

01 January 2006, 07:13 AM
Fun stuff everyone. I like your colors, se7, and I'm very impressed with your mouse skills, Freakwncy. (

oh, and Painter - 1 hr. or so. Kinda half watching Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

01 January 2006, 07:18 AM
the only thing I can think of, inesd, is that you might have something like "cmyk" mode on in your psd, and then be switching to "rgb" for jpg. But that doesn't really sound like it fits. Oh, you might be struggling with color profiles. Those are crazy. Like, I can have something look perfect online, and then pull it up for printing at the lab (with a perfectly calibrated machine) and my work looks psychadelic (sp?). Haven't got a solution.

01 January 2006, 07:24 AM
2hr 20min Tablet PC, Sketchbook Pro 2, Photoshop
You guys got me stoked up on doing a cyclops

01 January 2006, 09:28 AM
i'm having alot of fun taking a stab at the topics for the DSG.

I used to like attacking some of the stuff on but it got a little too least in my opinion...I like leaves room for question...and life is all about's like a little part of yourself is the eternal 4 year old...anyway. looking forward to more DSG's.

01 January 2006, 02:44 PM
Great work everyone!

Here is mine! 2h +/- PS + tablet

01 January 2006, 03:06 PM
InesD : yeah i had the same probs with jpg's but after making the Adobe gamma correction
it kept the same colors only slightly darker when i saved as jpg ( with save for web )

btw. his mouth is open ... just too messy too make it out at first glance :)

01 January 2006, 04:04 PM
oooo seems like we're havng a cyplops party... awesome entries guys... heres my big guy... big lady i they say... 2 heads r more then one...

1 hour + PS9

01 January 2006, 05:19 PM
hmm... yeah the difference in color is not UBER dramatic, but it does change.
No I do not flatten my image, I use RGB not CMYK, ... so it must be something else. Maybe its my color profiles or Adobe Gamma problems... can someone tell me how to fix them or where I can find it out?

Thanks Vahn, beaux, Jonas8200 and deaderthanred for trying to help out,

01 January 2006, 05:31 PM
mahir - can see your pic now.. great struggle!

vahn - great as always...

01 January 2006, 05:54 PM
IndsD. Your color profile is in edit>color settings. I always use adobe 1998 for rgb because that is sorta the standard. I use us web coated swop v2 for my cmyk I use gray gamma 2.2 and dot gain at 20%

Also on my management policies I have rgb set to convert to working rgb.

These settings work for me. I'm not sure what's going on with your file but I hope this holps.

01 January 2006, 07:03 PM
This is my first post . . I decided I would start here with the sketch area and work my way up to posting more finished stuff later. I happened to have a book of the Arabian Nights so I read what the giant looked like and came up with my own version based on the text I had available. It took about 2 hours and was done with Photoshop CS and Painter 8 w/ a wacom.

01 January 2006, 07:39 PM
Wow, Great start and welcome. The great thing about DSG is you can do these daily to keep the jucies running while you work on larger projects. Some of your sketches may even end up being your larger projects. Good to have ya

01 January 2006, 08:09 PM
