View Full Version : Re: MTOR Alfred where to start?

I am trying to find a good starting point to learn Alfred. Here are some questions I have:-
a) Is it possible to do something else with Alfred other than rendering ribs? And if so, how does one start? An example I have a maya scene and I want to render with mental ray, or maybe a shake file I want to render or a process that is non renderman related.
b) from the docs it says alfred [options] [ worklist | RIBfiles... ], so even though it sounds simple can someone please help me out by showing me a simple example? Like say I have a .ma file and I want to render frameA to frameB, how can one do that with alfred from command line?
btw the documentation is really great but its wayyy too much informaiton and I do not know how to start...
thanks in advance

There's a section in the Alfred docs on scripting, which you might want to take a look at. Basically it tells you how to write job scripts that Alfred will understand and execute. If you're rendering with Maya's renderer, there's a AlfredforMaya tcl script that's been posted on our forums you might find helpful:

Also, if you have RAT, you could use MTOR to write out a job script, and then play around and edit that until it does what you want. At least then your not starting with a blank page, and you can just go to the docs when you come accross something you don't understand.

how does one get mtor to write out the job script file?

Under the Alfred tab in the RenderMan globals, there should be an option to start Alfred paused. Switch that on and do a render. The job script should be in the rmantmp folder in your project directory.
