Ok guys this is my first Low Poly character. I have done a couple of faces but none of them have been that great, so I figured I should do a lowpoly character to get better. I will really need help as I go along so please crit this like crazy. I am also trying to actually think through this guy, as usually I just jump into things and it doesnt come out that great. So here is the helmet concept I had, its not anything amazing, and its a mess but whatever :p


I am working on the body conept right now so I will post that once I scan it in. While I am working on that I started the helmet and the face, its at 928 tris so far. Hopefully soon I will get some more views up but for now, here it is....

Ok well I had an idea for the clothes, and I decided not to go with a full armor scheme. I started the torso and pants, once again please remember that this is my first full character. I also started making and texturing the shield that will be on his back for good. I am trying to mess around with bump and spec maps, but I really am not noticing that much of a difference. I will post renders of just the shield later, and hopefully someone can help me figure out why it doesnt look right.




Still working on my drawing skills, but here is the concept for the clothes. The shoes and idea for a weapon, so tell me what ya think of it.


Please crit....I really want advice, and I can take it so let it all out on my crappy m0del :D

It looks ok for your first model, but there is a lot of room for improvement. First off, the body is too small for the head. Assuming it's supposed to be realistically proportioned, the character should be about 8 heads tall.
On a more technical note, you will need at least three edge loops around the knee to prevent it from deforming when it's skinned and weighted.

For a first model, it's good, but not great. You have a good base model though, so you should have no problem fixing it up.

So the knee needs at least 3 edge loops *takes a note*...ok. The bottom of the pants are supposed to be just a little bit under the knee, and then the boot starts. Maybe thats why it looks unproportioned? Shouldnt be a problem to fix that up tho. Thanks alot Aggroblakh :)

Ok here he is with the boots, does this make his proportions look right?

you must check your propotions of the body!
work with a reference ;)

Ok I put a reference up and his body is wrong :banghead: Thanks pimeto, now my head hurts :p

I am redoing the head, I made the original one to low and the mesh was a mess. I am actually kind of happy with this new head, its not top notch yet but its better than the first one. I am not really sure where I can take polys out of the head, if I take them out of the top will that make it look retarded...or is it bad or anything?....um yeah heres the wires. I will get wires of the original head up so you can see the improvement lol. But I am tired now and I just closed max...grrr



Gonna tweak the general shape a little I think, but crit anyway I really need it.

OK I am going through now and just fixing up what I can, and just adding more detail. I also started on the weapon...just an idea tho, its a mix of a hammer and ax. Oh yeah I changed the shape of the helmet a bit. So here it is, please crit. I feel like I am improving a little as I go :) so I'm getting happy!

nice work so far, much improvement if you compare it with your first render ;) , i think the body is still too small compared with the head, maybe you should work on that a bit. im looking forward to see this skinned/textured

Hey thanks Jelmer! Yeah I shortened the body because when I put the new head on the body was too big....so I will make it longer again :)

Ok I am very proud of this hand haha. This is the best hand I have made to date, even tho its crap compared to most here. Its amazing what taking your time will do hehe.

Still working on adding more things in certain areas, I am at 3300 polys. Wires later.



Oh yeah is it bad to skin the m0del before I texture it?

Ok well I worked some more on the arms, once again I am proud of this because I feel it is yet another improvement. But to other work compared here it isnt close but hopefully I will get there soon :D

Just gonna ask it again since it probably wont be seen up there. Is it ok to skin the character before you unwrap and texture it? I mean does it make it hard to unwrap if hes skin or is it just better to wait?



grrr....I cant upload the wires for some reason, so I will have to try it again tommorow.

Are you planning to give him any armour? His helmet looks cool, but the rest is just plain clothes. Not much of a knight if you ask me...

Hmm well does a knight have to be decked out in armor? :shrug: I wanted to give him some armor but not have him in all armor. I might give him some sort of breast plate, not sure what I am going to do as far as armor, I am going to look into it :)
