MGAC - 003 - Master Key - Item

I wanted to make this challenge a little more "micro" in the hopes that we'd get some more participants.

You've been asked to create the master key which will open the door leading you to the princess, treasure, boss or whatever video game cliche your heart desires.

This key has to stand above the rest of the measly keys which open ordinary doors. It needs to be stunning, a work of art itself.

You have one week to model this from the post time.

Your model must contain:
-No more than 500 tris
-256x256 color

You may also include
-256x256 alpha
-256x256 bump or normal map
-256x256 spec

Light as best you can to show its awsomeness. You may dress the scene however you wish, but will only be judged on the model and textures.

I want to encourage everyone to post concepts and wip's since this thread will only last a week.

The winner will choose next week's challenge.

The texture size doesnt really correspond with the poly limit, I'd say 256x256 textures would be more realistic.

12 December 2005, 09:37 PM
Ditto actually - at 512x512 thats enough detail to display the key at screen resolution at *almost* an entire NTSC picture. Even on the 360 this would be overkill!

12 December 2005, 11:19 PM
Well you guys probably know better than me. Fixed.

12 December 2005, 11:55 PM
So, this ends on the 12th, correct?

12 December 2005, 12:14 AM
this should be interesting, I will do something, I guess it ends on 12th unless JuddWack has different plant also the previous link isn't working

12 December 2005, 12:37 AM
Hellboy, I guess it really depends on where you live. The posts have times in the corner that I believe are relative to where you live, if you set your time zone in your options menu. Just add 7 days to it.

12 December 2005, 01:11 AM
sounds like fun! :D

Could any moderator please pin the MGAC-002 down and pin this one up ?

12 December 2005, 02:47 AM
Hey guys, I sent a message to bentllama to get this as a sticky. A few of you were asking.

Anyway here is my submission.

It's 486 tris. Could have dropped it another 20 or so. I have a 256 color, bump and spec.

I'd really appreciate some help with the ribbon. I wasnt sure how to deform it properly except by manualy moving each vert. Am I supposed to rig it with a bone system? Just wondering how to get it done more professionally so that it could be adapted to a characters neck.

Can't wait to see some more entries. Good luck everyone.

12 December 2005, 10:21 AM
Hey JuddWack, nice keys man looks neat but can i ask u something the small triangles in the center is a real mesh or just bump.....just curious ....

12 December 2005, 05:20 PM
I'm not quite sure what which tris your talking about. I consider the pyramids to be quite large. They are modeled in. If you mean tiny dot jewels that run in a row leading to a larger dot jewel, they are bumped.

Hope this helps.

12 December 2005, 07:07 AM
i think i get it thanx a ton

12 December 2005, 10:13 AM
ok, I'm in. This sounds like fun.

so where do I post? in this thread, or start a new one?

12 December 2005, 06:18 PM
Just post in here. Let us know if its your final submission or still a wip.

12 December 2005, 01:27 AM

this is pretty fun...

here are the WIPs in order from left to right (

this is about 2 hours time including the UVs.
total triangles is 496

maybee tomorow I'll have a chance to work on some textures (

12 December 2005, 10:34 AM
Hey this is my first post to mgac and also my first game model and i must say this is a good way to this is a sacred key model i have done it has 498 tri.s and a colour map and a spec map....

12 December 2005, 03:35 PM
Hey ho done one, too. It took me 2 hours to make.
116 tris
256x256 texture sheet
256x256 spec map

Hope you like it.

12 December 2005, 04:00 PM
not bad:thumbsup: you projected the texture map coordinated just fine, but why choose stone texture over a key ?

12 December 2005, 04:23 PM
One reason is that it is a veeeeeeeeeery old key, the key to hell, another reason is that stone just looked colder and nicer for the style i wanted to go.

12 December 2005, 06:39 AM
Photons, that is a great first game model. Is this your first model you've completed? It actually reminds me of my original idea for this challenge, but I went with a gothic key. It definitly needs some work on the texture but keep it up.

BananaSlat, I say go with the stone texture, but not over the whole key. I was considering using stone in my key somehow too. I think you should beef up the tri count though. Your just over 20% of the maximum amount.

Nice work so far though everyone. I've seen a few of you working on the monthly challenge too, good luck.

12 December 2005, 08:09 AM
wow, Photons, what a cool design. it almost looks like a key for a Medieval "The Club"

12 December 2005, 11:52 AM
wow cool entries, well done every1

12 December 2005, 03:54 AM
wow, looks like I just made it before the 12th

Here are the maps

here's the final image

12 December 2005, 06:38 AM
`hey thanx for give me tips i will surely keep that in mind....long way to go.....???

thanx for the tips

12 December 2005, 02:07 PM
yorgo12345 nice clean mesh, but could be optimised alot. i think the bump map could do alot of what your doing in polys, and that your maps are not working hard enough. you could either halve them without much loss or add more detail, like texture, or extra patternning. also if you look at the texture alot of it looks the same, why not use one section of "edge" or tube and use that for all. even a simple overlay of a standard, metal texture would work well, but im thinking your going for that "toon" look

bannanasalat i think your maping could be better, the model is good, and the poly usage effecient, but the map is just a repeating stone texture, it would be alot better to draw an individual, map, adding detail, like patterning, and rust in the correct places. at the moment you have too much map detail for the poly count.

keep up the good work peeps

12 December 2005, 05:33 PM
Hey very nice stuff guys. Just wanted to let you know this challenge will be closed in a little over 2 hours.

Start thinking about who wins for the week. There are a lot of good entries here. We will post our choices in this thread at the end of the competition and the winner will choose the challenge for next week.

12 December 2005, 11:13 PM
hey this is pretty neat guys, some neat looking designs. if i had more time i would participate as well.

Damn, its already been a week... I have been WAY too busy lately. It never even made sticky status! Whoever picks next better make sure you contact a forum leader that actively uses this forum to make it a sticky.

12 December 2005, 12:56 AM
My bad about that sticky. I did contact a forum member but didn't know that they don't visit often.

Anyways I'm going to have to cast my vote for Yorgo.

12 December 2005, 03:14 AM
Eh. Why not? I'm already late but the contest sounded fun.

Untextured render:

498 polys. I'll try to get the textures done soon.

12 December 2005, 08:33 PM
Yorgo, r u willing to choose the next challenege, I think its kinda falling behind

Bazooka Tooth
12 December 2005, 08:56 PM
Shishka, lets see that key finished!

Everyone toss in some ideas, we will wait a bit to hear from Yorgo. Maybe this should be treated more like the daily sketch... but still weekly... you know.

My ideas:

Crossbows and Catapults
Teleport pad
The Monitors
My work station
300 tri character
Sprite character
non traditional powerup (traditional being ammo, armor and health)

12 December 2005, 09:36 PM
if its a teleporter pad ill be sure to jump in ive been looking to do somin like that in game art

12 December 2005, 10:03 PM
500tris firearm
3 Room prop (150tris each)
I also was thinking about

concept art: character design (800x600px)
concept art: vehicle design (800x600px)

Bazooka Tooth
12 December 2005, 01:51 AM
what is a 3 room prop?

I like the idea of doing just concept art, but when I mentioned the Daily Sketch I was reffering to the format, how Roberto just pulls from people suggestions. It might be kind of cool if it were coordianted with the daily sketch somehow, and maybe could draw more people into the MGAC.

12 December 2005, 02:23 AM
Oh hey guys,

sorry if you were waiting for me, I'm not familiar with how this all works.

is the voting over? I would throw in for Photons if it isn't too late.

anyway, yes, I could pick the next challenge if I'm supposed to. just let me know, I'll check the thread tonight to hear from you guys.

Bazooka Tooth
12 December 2005, 02:35 AM
Yep, it is Judd's pick, so your up. You can PM me if you have any questions.

12 December 2005, 04:37 AM
