View Full Version : Mad Constructor On Robot, Sormann At Work (3D)

11 November 2002, 08:45 PM (

A new picture of my mad constructor character on top of his
Body enlargement robot.

I am interrested in any opinion.

11 November 2002, 08:54 PM
Ha, ha....The dice add a nice touch. Are they air fresheners by any chance?

Great work.

I can't wait to see these characters come to life. Will you be posting an animation soon? The suspense is killing me.

11 November 2002, 08:54 PM
No crit here, only compliments. It looks very nice. I love the cartoony yet realistic look to it.

11 November 2002, 08:54 PM
really nice the render. what rendering software are you using?

11 November 2002, 08:54 PM
great pic! the fuzzy dice are a great touch!!

only thing i personnally would change is perhaps a tweak in teh lighting to bring the robot/character out a bit from the background. maybe just making the background a bit darker would do it, but right now it doesn't stand out as much as i would like... but really thats just a minor quibble, as its a great image

11 November 2002, 09:10 PM
Wahahahah! Great!!! :applause:

Very very nice idea! And amazing stuff as usual!

11 November 2002, 09:17 PM
Thanks for the replies!
I really thought about the lighting comments and
tried to make a version with darker Background.

11 November 2002, 09:49 PM
I actually like the first version better, before you changed the lighting. It looks more like a painting. The new one looks more like computer output. Its very subtle but that's just the impression I get. Great job on everything by the way.

11 November 2002, 03:01 AM
nice one!!.......second pic looks better the first one looked too similar to it's environment....

11 November 2002, 03:51 AM
yeowsa! This sure is impressive! I'm so stunned I dun know what to do except :D :applause:

11 November 2002, 06:58 AM
I think it needs more contrast between the character and background.

11 November 2002, 07:32 AM
Rather than tweaking the lighting, maybe try adding a little depth of field to separate the character from the background.

11 November 2002, 07:58 AM
hell yeah!

11 November 2002, 09:09 AM
great!.......i love ur style.

11 November 2002, 12:23 PM
One word

Your work is phenominal, you have inspired a lot of what I do. Not only can you model and texture with ninja skill, you can animate with it too..

Keep on wrockin it.

Hey Sormann,

lovely design. Allways loved your way of texturing, modeling
and lighting things. Yet, Id guess this one may benefit from
a more dramatic lighting of the backround. Not neccessarily
completly darker or out of focus, but with the same colored
and contrasty light you put into the characters.

Something like a strong semisharp shadow cast from the
bot onto the backround, stretched and distorted across
the backround. Allmost as if the shadow had a life of his own:-)

Or to keep it simpler, fading off light with distance to camera.
As if he came out of the dark. Blue, soggy darkness.

Oops, yes its your pic - not mine...

11 November 2002, 04:39 PM
thanks for the replies.
I really have to work on the Background more.
Anyway the current back is a replacement for the reactor
room setting I am planning to create for this scene, but this will take a while.

11 November 2002, 06:01 PM
sorry i was think iam in another Forum...

Great work.... 2nd one is much better more readable!

11 November 2002, 06:13 PM
Whoa! It reminds me of Dr. Willy in Capcom's Megaman for the Nintendo 8-bit! :buttrock:

You've got a really nice individual style here though, that has no resemblance to Megaman :) So don't get me wrong!

11 November 2002, 06:14 PM

11 November 2002, 10:10 PM
could you post some wires?

11 November 2002, 10:44 PM
simply amazing!

11 November 2002, 11:13 PM
really impressive! This guy reminds me of the evil character from Cubix (an animated cartoon that didn't last very long), only a LOT more detailed.

11 November 2002, 11:27 PM
Excellent work.

Where do you plan on going with this?

11 November 2002, 11:43 PM
I really love your style and work:thumbsup:

Im inspired!

11 November 2002, 11:54 PM
That fusion of painted/realistic/caricature looks awesome. Would you be willing to fill us in a little on how you achieved this render style? Is the secret in the painted materials?

11 November 2002, 12:24 AM
Ok if you keep coming with this amazing stuff I won't have anymore awards to give out :p

You are the first multi winner of the CGtalk choice award . Please feel free to display this image anywhere you like! Congrats again, extremely well done

11 November 2002, 12:55 AM
damn, that almost looks like an idea I did a few years back..but hell, after Megaman I guess its all Hemogonous.
I really like it, the dice on top is a cool add-on :)

Good stuff man, looks illustrated.

11 November 2002, 01:16 AM
Beautiful work :) ! Texturing and modelling are amazing ;) , more please!

11 November 2002, 01:50 AM
I think this is some great art work. Alot of thought and detail has been put into it. I appreciate the work you've done. So don't get me wrong, but I'm curious as to why it looks flat? It looks more like an illustration than a 3d render. That may have been your intent, and if so, more power to you because you did a fine job at it.

However, I feel so much more realism could be brought to it if it looked more 3d. The texture work is obviously there. Therefor, I feel the flatness is due to lighting. Possibly some bump mapping issues as well?

At any rate, good job.

Also, I've seen the animations on your web page. A+ work man. I really dig the animations there.

11 November 2002, 03:24 AM
Sinpl amazing, theres nothing I can say. Everything fits very well. The lighting is great, its sorta a twist from the normal mad sci, I like it!

11 November 2002, 04:57 AM

10 stars:buttrock:

11 November 2002, 07:16 AM

11 November 2002, 07:56 AM
Well done man, Keep post up.:wip: :wip:

11 November 2002, 12:27 PM
Tanks again for all replies!

I made a screenshot of the simple shaded version because
the pure wire is simply a bit too dense to see anything in a

Mahlon: In fact I didnt use that much handpainted textures.
Most shaders uses procedural textures conbined with some handpainted base textures like scratches or some special color/bump maps for the face and the kneecaps.

Lildradon: Thanks for the award!

Rouge: Its true ,I am not satisfied with the lighting jet. Maybe I will try a lightdome or something to fake gi a bit...

Tmortan: The next step is to animate the whole thing and create an reactorroom as setting. A (incomplete)test anim can be seen at:

11 November 2002, 01:04 PM

I don't have any negative feedback or suggestions. I went over to your site and saw the animation of this character walking. Absolutely spectacular.

Your work is very, very good. I would love to see you doing animated movies or such. Wonderful work.

11 November 2002, 04:08 AM
Sormann, this is fantastic :buttrock:

I have long admired your work, but with this latest work, both character and robot, you have excelled yourself.

The animation is brilliant, I can't wait to see it polished.

11 November 2002, 04:11 AM
In reference to the comments about how the figure should stand out more from the background, i disagree, as the figure is not so much in a background, but rather in an environment, the figure should interact with the environment, be a part of it, not look like it is pasted on, as the lighting in the second image gives the impression of. however, i do agree that the first image is a little too uniform. perhaps if you had just certain areas of the background darker (in areas where on the 2d plane of the image the background is close to light areas of the figure, for instance) it would serve to unify the figure and background as well as not end up with a bit of a mushy image. fantastic work, though, love the texturing.

11 November 2002, 05:19 AM
I love the steam punk look of this, you've really done an awesome job! The walking animation is looking very cool, I love how the guy sways back and forth and it looks like its really not a very relaxing ride. I'm sure you're aware of this, but his hands are clipping his knees in a major way. I can't wait to see the final :)

11 November 2002, 05:38 AM

11 November 2002, 10:37 AM
!hella cool!

cleverly funny characters design you got here sormann:cool:
and i like your texturing style as well. the anim looks cool too, but if i have to pinpoint a thing that would be the robots arms, the way they move they seem they're not as heavy as they look like. but its just my opinion. all in all hats off :buttrock:

btw whats happen to your pig, elephant and the gangster?

11 November 2002, 10:44 AM
Wow is amazing guy, I love your style, very very stylized characters guy, all they have one characteristic touch than you print to your models. :applause: :applause:
