I could REALLY use some tips...

It seems like no matter how much I smudge and blur, I CAN'T get this to look good. I can say it's a major improvement after I learned about masks, but even that is giving me trouble. The colors show up too light in most places and it just overall looks like an amateur photoshop image. (I use gimp)

Please help!

Okay so I found out what I was doing wrong. I redid most of it and it turned out alot better. Still want to work on it though. Any tips? thoughts? All are encouraged!

Hi djtrousdale,

You know, I am not really good at painting, so please consider this a comment which you should countercheck with your preferences...

I think there's three things that really disturb me, because they make the pic look too flat.

1. The viewer can't figure out the light source. The spheres on the right indicate a light source from bottom/right, but then there should be much darker values on the keys of the xylophone and the central panel. Also the alien's righthandside should be much darker then.

2. connected with this, you could enhance the solidity of your forms. I did practice with Ron Lemen's basic forms tutorial ( order to get a grip on basic forms (again: not that I could say I am good already, but I feel I have improved) which is to give you an idea of how to shade planes and surfaces in your pic by breaking down anyhitng into cylinders, spheres, cubes a.s.o.

3. the keys of the xylophone should be in perspective, i.e. they should all be directed to a common vanishing point on the eye level/horizon

hope it helps

Thankyou :D
Your points 2 and 3 aren't so easy to fix-- If I had known about them before I made the drawing it would have looked better.

But I tried to do something about the light source. I don't know how light looks when it goes through a bubble. I flipped all the values because they were 180' from where I wanted the lightsource to be.

This is just a general practice. I want to be done with this for now so I can try my new method on some DSG topics. :D
