View Full Version : Fire hydrant

I got tired of my helicopter so i did this today for a change.

Normalmap, specular.
564 tris.

I may put more dirt on it, and change the specular, it's too bright in some places.

But what else? What do you think?

some of the aging and weathering seems just a bit random. Maybe work on the areas next to the cap, some water damage, rust or buildup of some sort of fungi or something. The bolts could use some paint scratching, and then the base might use a bit of dirt buildup from people walking by kicking up debris, and the cars on the street throwing stuff around.

Looks fine so far.
Agreeing with the above though.
I think the paint is too worn off on the main body too.
The grafitty itself could use some aging as well, maybe make some of them have fallen off with the paint too.
I think there shoudnīt be grafitti on the base, spraycans usually donīt work well when you spray the floor. And it would probably be too dirty to be inviting to sprayers anyways.

I also agree with the above. The paint itself is also way to bright, I would dull it down and make several variations; from the paint that is still 100% intact, then the peeling layer underneath, then the rusted layer.

As for the spray paint, a fire hydrant is too small to be able to tag anything intricate; i would lose the spray paint all together and just keep some marker graffitti. It just seems like you aded it in for the sake of adding it in, and it kind of takes away from it.

Hi all and thanks!

The things you've said are things i thought about myself... but it's really good to hear from you guys too!

I've been thinking about the grafitti and stuff and i wasn't too sure about adding it... now it seems i was right thinking that.... maybe i'll remove all of it or just some of it.

Deadboy: The paint is actually VERY bright on these things, at least on all my references. (google)
And maybe i need more COWBELL! ;D

Now i'll get to it!

I agree, you need to put more work into that dirt to make it look convincing.

Here's a good example of how to do it:

sysop: Yeah... had that "tutorial" in mind when i did this...guess it still needs more DIRT... and maybe cowbell...

Changing stuff... still not finished

Its much better now! One thing that bugs me is the specular highlights. atm. it looks like it is covered with oil or extremly wet. Without a surrounding scene (where it rains) it looks a bit strange.

Maybe you should support the round things which hold the hydrant to the ground with some geometrie. They are big enough. Try something simple like a 5/6-sided Pyramid or something.

I really like the dirty texture now, it supports the forms of the hydrant in a nice way.

Hey, looking much better!

I agree with the above about the spec- but the dirt you've put in looks much better than the random graffiti from before. It's funny, I cant recall ever critiquing a prop so many of us take for granted so much- fire hydrants are in games all the time, and we walk right past them. I think it's pretty cool that youare seeing how to make something so generic interesting.

keep it up! And yes, whenever possible, cowbell works wonders!!

Yes much better. The paint looks a lot more right in the way itīs peeling off now :)
More dirt needed still though :)
