I was wondering if its possible to model afro hair without any extra plugs. I think that the modeling would be fairly simple, but I'm more concerned about the texture of the hair, since it has to have volume and transparent spots all over the mesh object...Any suggestions?

well i don't know exactly how...i've ponder a method...you're gonna need a hair plugin if you want a realistic look...otherwise you're gonna have to do the black sphere on the head type of look :)

A displacement map and maya fur would do the trick.

That might be expensive if chikos isn't using currently Maya.

The Fuzzy Bee shader from highend3d.com tweaked on a roughly fro-shaped poly worked rather well for my coworker.

It depends on how realistic you want it to be and on the kind of hairstyle. What about several mapped grids with alpha channel? That could be a good compromise.
