i have taken on a project that is making a game in 30 days for a local contest set up for fun.

it involves me and one programmer. I have decided to post the WIP for fun and to see what people think of the idea.

i now only have 21 days left so this is gonna be tight... wish me luck : P

heres the fist test

heres the second set with color

the 2d layouts are done and i have started 3d.
will post more when i get a bit further

heres the knights wip.. hes not textured but im working on a tune shade style for the whole thing as i dont really have much time to texture... anyone know any tune shaders better then the nprs ramp shader ??

the game in the end at least for the 30 day project is going to be renders rather then realtime so i dont have to worry about tech issues.

in the end im lookin at these and i think i like the regular render better... i might go back to that style..

also there will be a symbol on the shield of whatever element he will be.. he can change from
fire /earth /wind/water right now he is fire

using maya 6.0
knight = 3344 tris
sword = 186 tris
shield = 340 tris

hahahaha - that knight and dragon are AWESOME - they look more like they would hang out at a pub together than actually get in a fight! really fun characters, can't wait to see more man.

damn that idea make my head hurt just thinking about it, have you put the rest of your life on hold for the next 30 days or what, planning on getting any shut eye, or are you going for a 720 hour straight work session.


personnelly i like the toon shading, get a simple texture on it and itll look sweet. if you go for normal shading you will have to work alot harder on the textures- me thinks

I love the concepts and the models so far..... you stick to the concept wonderfully.

I think you can do it in 30 days......might be a bit tight but even if you don't totally finish this in 30 days, you gotta keep posting the work until you are done (no getting out of this one easy)

Im guessing you aren't writing an engine from scratch. What technology are you building on?

18 more days..... ive been slackin.. or rather just busy...

finally today i managed to get more done..

heres the goblin wip

Tech Update:
body: 2038 tris
backPack: 728
bow: 342

he turned out not to shaby... i used a rig i had from before and i just modified it so that it fit him... i have never done something like that before but it seemed to work.. ok i guess... though wow kinda a pain in the ass.... specially making modifications to both halfs of the body ie rightarm left arm.. and such...

also what are your thoughts on the poly counts of these guys.. ?? am i up to par or am i goin to high ?... oviously its rather dependant on the game sinario.. but is this about average what i got here ?

also another note this is the first time i tried this :
i did orthographic drawings for both these chars as you can see from the first goblin pic.. if you guys havent tried this yet kuz ur just modeling your stuff from looking at drawings or just eyeballin stuff... i STRONGLY SUGEST trying this teqnique.. it was really helpful in nailing the characters dimentions and speeds up the whole process kuz you arnt guessing where verts go .. and the orthographic drawings didnt take long at all

I got to say this is a brilliant challenge! Where is it being held initially? I'd like to try something like this soon too!
also your designs are simplistic enough to make a decent and fun game! great stuff!

the challenge is being held in winnipeg manitoba.. thats in canada for those who dont know where winnipeg is..

yah the challenge is quite interesting as it forces a load of creative challenges and really makes you learn your shortcuts..

also stresses you right out hahahahaa

but its been pretty fun so far...

These look great so far..I'm digging the style...
I used to participate in similar game challenges using independant or (hobby) game engines....such as Blitz or Darkbasic....
what engine are you guys using to build your it an Unreal mod, something like a "game-basic" or totally original?

cant wait to see the completed entry, please post a link when you guys of luck!

this acutally took some time.. tho theres a bit here that your not seeing and i cant show yet kuz its not done..

but this is the basic frame of the game

i dont remember if i said it was a flash game.. but yah thats what its gonna be..
the long purple strips are the health bars and other meters used to play the game

hhmm now that i look at this pic these guys dont have shadows under there feet lol... i forgot to add that hahahaha

oh well next time : P

lookin good, love the pumpkin head dude, other guy is hard to tell whats goin on, no its harder with the bigger guys to get silouhettes, but maybe try helping the veiwer see whats happening by giving a little more form to the body parts, mainly the head gets lost... maybe slight color changes, also might try giving another level of highlights on the health bars.

k i got mr Dragon done.. hes definatly one of my fav of the set.. i havent given him his textures yet but hopefuly there will be time for that in the near future..

the final character is DONE boo and YAH

Body/Head: 1778
wings: 128 tris

now that all 4 are done theres just 3 more backgrounds and all .. all .. alll the animations to do..

im planning 1 week for the animations and then 5 more days extra for doing tweeks.

my programming partner has most of the game together and is working on hashing out bugs .. so if this all works according to plan we should make the deadline of the 24th!!

Heres a link to the knights animation tests..

im very open to critiques so by all means some pointers or ideas would be great !
also every character is going to have about 4 attacks ,1 defence, 1 win and 1 death
these animations took about 4 hours to complete in total

another note:
i know this file is an animation .. is it ok that im posting it here ?? or should i post it in animation section or both ??

Nice animation :D. But something bothers me in the animation (watches it again to see what exactly it is) :P... well I guess it is the constant speed. example it attacks and the arm goes beck like he is going to strike with his sword someone who is behind him, but then the animation stops suddenly. Maybe you should make it go slower when you get to the start position again.
Oh and another thing... the standard posision shouldn´t be so motionless I guess... the char isn´t even breathing or moving lik he is in a fight. I gues that is the main problem the char is like a statue when in start/standard position. It makes your char look unnatural.

Are that enough crits??? :D well keep it coming :D

well the situation is that i only have maybe 10 frames to get an attack off.. right now there 15 frames each.. so im going to be dropping some frames to accomplish this..

also the still sections are the characters rest position.. im not sure how we are working the breath animation.. maybe even just one or two frames to switch inbetween these attacks.. but what i have there is just to show of the attacks themselves..

but i agree that there a little fast and i guess its the best i could do with such a budget frame allowance

also the one where he swings his shield is actually suposed to be an attack.. but it kinda looks like a block aswell : P

Im pretty sure it is okay to post the animations here.

As far as the animation goes, I think it will be good once in the game. I especially love the way he dies:D

I dont know wether it is a mistake or on purpose, but when he throws the bomb, it remains in his hand, until he is in relaxed position again.

heres the castle level scene


im aiming for 4 levels.. basicaly static backgrounds .. 1 for each character... this is the knights BG and the cave b4 was the dragons
im working on the fairys enchanted forest right now .. ill post it in a bit

time spent: this scene took about 2 hours start to finnish

what do you think of the depth of field here ? is it to much or does it work ?

Wow, I really like the atmosphere you have created. As wonderfully well done everything is, I really love the backgrounds. It's so happy cartoony, but dark and almost morbid looking. I really like the almost Dr. Seuss style, it's so stylized. You don't really see much cartoony happy looking anything in games any more. It's so refreshing to see it appear once again.

I, like everyone else, wish you the best of luck and hope to see this compete among the best in the contest.

all the artwork on this post is my work. theres 2 people on the team.. me and the programmer.. hes currently workin hard for the final presentation happening tomorow night.. most of my portion of the project is complete now, though theres still last minute touches..

i'll be posting the final competition version sometime tomorow so you all can have a look!
