how did they make those realistic looking individual grass in metal gear solid3, or tiger woods ea golf game?

how would i make bunchs of polygon grass for game without using too much cpu resources?
please help. texture? alpha channel? any other way? besides paintfx

I haven't played either game, but I'd say it's probably textures with alpha channels.

If the lighting on the grass looks good, they might have normal maps on the grass too, to make it look more 3D.

I found out fur is another way, it's labor intensitve, and u can animate it also.
