View Full Version : PhotoRealistic Desert Tutorial?

Any good tutorials for creating good desert scenes? Something with a good sand texture. Not sure really how to accomplish this. Here's a picture of kinda what I'd like to create. Maybe a few less plants and some more dramatic mountains, but overal what I want. I think for the mountains they will be a matte painting. Thanks!

This shouldn't be too hard to do.
For the background I'd use Terragen and for the foreground a displaced plane with an appropriate texture and maybe some pebbles. Add a skylight and a sun and adjust the light colours and you're done.

You will need a large texturemap. And use the mix material to mix together lots for layers to make the texture look better. And a bumpmap. Very detailed, maybe a noise-map with a scale of 0.04 or something. And use some kind of scatter to put out the rocks.

And by the way; the background is a bit.. You might want to use some kind of fog effect and decrease the contrasts of the backdrop..

You might want to use images like this: as a backdrop, if you dont want to make it yourself of course :)

Hope this helps you..

I can't recommend this from experience as I use Maya (just getting into Max this week so I'm forum trolling :D) but I am a heavy Terragen user and I saw this utility which may help with integrating Terragen backdrops into Max.
I'm hoping to get familiar with Max more quickly but it really is an entirely new beast and I feel like a beginner all over again. Good luck!
