View Full Version : Car modeling question

I am modeling my Ferrari Enzo, and I got to this part where There is this bend in the car, looks like a triangle emerging from the plane, here are the pics of what I did, and how it looks after smooth.
not too pretty, is there a way to accomplish this ? It should be pretty smooth going, but when my light lights it up it looks very twisted.
Thanx alot !

it would be good to include an image of what you are trying to achieve, it will make it easier for people to comment and help you.

You have a point there ... :)
So here goes, I am talking about the rear part, (between the rear lamps and the ferrari logo).
Hope it's clear now,
All the best,

Wow. Itís been just over a year that I have been out of the 3D world and it is amazing how much you forget. Keep in there.
I had this problem once and it was as simple as having all the vertices come in to one point. The way you have it now, when you smooth it you have a square it will become round (simple experiment, create a cube, now smooth it. you will see that the basic shape of a cube is now round. thatís not what you are after.)
now you will say that you are trying to keep to quads. my answer is for things like these shapes you may need to bed the rules slightly (3D always works in triangles) but just get the result you want and then throw in a vertices as part of a straight line (this does always work but just experiment) remember I think it was thomas Jefferson who made the light bulb, he made over 1000 different designs, and what did he say, he did not fail a thousand times, he just found 1000 ways not to make a light bulb. Yes I did watch National Treasure a few days ago.

So, is that about what you mean ?

Yes but the verticie on the right produces 5 sided plane. The 3 sided plane is where you want it. Best thing to do is just work with 3 sided plane for where it meets up. The suggestion i gave before is a bit more long winded.
All 3 vertices just merge them together.
But before you do that just give it a smooth to see the results.

I think things got worse, I used to start this model quite a few months ago, but I think I tried the triangular way also, here is what's happened...
I think the way to solve this is using quads though, as they don't tend to moosh :)

sorry i cant help you any further but an idea is to download a 3d model of a car and see how they do these types of effects.

Thanx for the help anyway, I hope other people would have a look too.
