I seem to remember reading somewhere that if you use the Colour Picker in lightwave and hold down a certain key, you can pick a colour from anywhere on the monitor... is there any truth to this?

Whoa! --- That would be seriously cool. -- If it's not true that you can do that.... it should certainly be built into the next version of Lightwave!
In the mean time. -- You can use "Picky" -- It's a Lightwave Color picker plugin that replaces the errr.... lightwave color picker. It has the ability to load an image and then grab RGB values right from that picture. -- It also works with HDRI pics aswell! It is actually quite often that I take a screen grab, load it into Photoshop, save it as a bmp... (only works with bmp's) and then load the bmp into "picky" to grab the color, then switch back to the default Lightwave color picker. -- Sometimes I use Picky exclusivly... but I like the gradient options of the Lightwave Color Picker to much.
Picky can be found here:
And here is a screen shot of the interface:

Here's what I use at the moment. It's designed for colourblind people like myself, but I can see alot of other people getting some good use out of it.

You can get RGB values directly off the screen if you have rendered with Image viewer active. You cant actually pick colors off it but you can get RGB values.
