I was going to buy camtasia for 300$..but got hypercam instead for 30$ ;)

there's also a script somewhere for taking screenshots of 3dsmax

Camtasia is excellent... It has a lot of great features particularily in editing mode and it compresses well. For a free alternative, try Windows Media Encoder 9... which can do quite a nice job of vid tuts, I've tried it myself (problem being it doesn't have a wide range of output formats). I've also tried this next app, called Wink:

Not so good though, at least not for capturing at a frame rate, but excellent for other types of computer program video tutes, as this one captures well based on mouse clicks and keyboard usage.

My recommendation is that you try all three... get the camtasia demo, try WME9 and give Wink a try too (although not all that good for 3d tutes)
