You can not delete a surface if there are polygons that use this surface. If you have no poly for this surface the number of poly that use the surface should Zero. Otherwise, you have to assign another surface to these polygones in order to delete the surface.
Click on the "Surface" button at the bottom of Lightwave windows.
So press the "w" key to display the window with the content of the 3d project. There is a surface line, so select this line and a pop up menu with all the surfaces used will appears. Then select the surface you want to check and to delete.
Click on the "+" key at the left of the surface name, then all the polygons that use this surface will be selected!
Now, You have to assign another surface to these polygons. Click on the "q" key and choose or create another surface for these polygons.
Click on the left of the windows in order to deselect the polygons. Now if you make ctrl+F3 or click on the "Surface Editor" button, you will see the surface name with a number of poly of Zero!
Do not worry about this surface name, it will be automatically removed when you will re-open your project.
