View Full Version : "Ogre" - Conception for Game Character

Hello everyone!

In this threat we'd like to document the development of a 3D Character from scratch. The bold ambition is to develop a highly detailed Game-Character, fit for use in some upcoming Next-Generation Console Games.
So far, I've been entrusted with the design & conception.
In the beginning, we took hold of and older sketch of mine, describing an ogre who was slightly inspired by this old buddhistic tale of "Prince Five-Weapons and Sticky-Hair" (check this out:
there' that first sketch...

yet a bit too graphical for this purpose, I'd like to use this as a base for fleshing-out.
I started filling in my sketchbook two weeks ago at random times until I finally got to scan and post the first approaches. Any kind of comment is of course most welcome, also regarding considerations about potential upcoming difficulties for "making it 3D".

First, I focused on general appearance, proportions and shape/ "1a/1b"

The antlers here became somehat more like branches, and also as the arm shaped, I found it more interesting to make the limbs look a bit more like wood, rather than skin/ "2"

Likewise the tale of Sticky-Hair suggests, there might should be weapons, mostly arrows
sticking all over his head. Just as the sculls around his belt, it gives a nice feel of human scale to it and as for the weapons, also some Moby Dick-like marking of a "die-hard".

Following up is a more aggressive version. Reminds a bit of a raging gorilla maybe..
apart from that I just realise that face reminds one of the 'Predator'/ "3"

Not sure wether I like that mace better or the knife. I think it depends a bit if it is more of a savage beast or a chrotchety forest-elf with a soft spot for roasted kids.

In the next one, I focused on materials and again on getting a general shape before
going more into details....

The beard might be getting too much of a kung-fu drunken master here./ "4"

The Hand in the middle/bottom has turned out more into that tree trunk-like shape. There should be Fingers loke roots and between them some greenish moss, so the arms would cmouflage as small trees../ "5"

Now here was some attention to the Face and later the arms...I already felt like drawing the same all the time. I tried to give him bigger fangs and also tried to find the right facial shape and look./ "6"

..yes, it's chewbacca/"7"

Last for tonight, I put this very recently drawn arm and hand, which is more human, rather than tree-like again. Not sure yet../ "8"

I finally think that coiling root-muscles and vene-like interweavement will do. (Maybe Z-Brush?).

I used only pencils and sometimes a marker to sketch, later I used a pen to ink. But I guess the sketch block paper i use gives a nice washy look as it gets scanned.

I've been trying to get the face away from the "predator-spook" and also keeping it from becoming too ape-like. I find it difficult to get more detailed on the face by keeping the feel it has in the very first sketch. I somehow wasn't able to reach this.
here, I was hoping for the pen to do it by itself../ "9"

...I scanned two drawings that needed editing and gave it some color with a paint program.
I've been told he is getting too cute...can't shake it../ "11"

The beard is growing out again, away from that Fu Man Chu thing. I keep some detail, discard some other. By now I grown fond of the idea of having the ogre blending into the woods, so that you could bump right into him, first wondering why these roots in front of you move and where this sudden sharp stench is coming from...
(having him as an ambusher rather than a hunter would also go well with him, being rather short legged) / "12"

me and a friend are going to turn it into 3d as soon as we all (the thread/designer/operators) are pleased with the results.

operators criteria...

1. showcasing our skills
2. to use necessarily todays and upcoming realtime techniques
3. alot of detail

... the rest is all yours!!! =)


PS: somehow the beast has a cute feel to it ^_^

"3D Division asked me to post this technical question, so if you're a passerby and might know: "How many Polygons is the average amount for a character used in a Next-Generation Console Game?"

I know about the useage of normal-maps, but it'd be interesting to know how far you can go with mere modeling..

This one is the latest sketch or rather more elaborate drawing I did. It developed out of some luckily placed strokes, unfortunately placed a bit to high up the page, so it cuts the
Antlers (who need extra treatment anyway..)
On the rather positiv side I do like: general proportions, the beard, the face, the interweavement of the wooden limbs, for which I've gladly found the time to render.
...I hope to be getting on the right way away from that "cuteness" I've been recently accused of...

Gee, thanks a lot rawwad, Propictales and BMunchhausen, for the very kindly motivating comments!
I'll strive to and hope to keep up your interest in this. There's going to be more drawings shortly, also including some real attention to detail as well as some in-action poses. If you have any suggestions for anything, I'd gladly meet them.

Also perhaps an idea for some situation/pose you'd find suitable for a Game Character, I'd welcome it as an inspiration.

hm...I would prefer to see this as a high detailed 3D model and not as a high detail fake lowpoly model. I think this character deserves detail especially in 3D. Just my opinion.

Thank you guys! I got quite a bit on my hands again, but I'll keep this a steady progress, tough. Glad you share interest!
As you do all, I agree totally on the need for a high res/ detail 3D Model, yet I don't exactly know about dis - and advantages of using normalmaps to gain high detail.
The idea is surely not to do some quick low-poly character that doesn't meet with this level of detail.
I'd sure feel like doing some modeling myself, tough for now I stick with drawing it; and by the way, I'm not sure what my 4 year-old CPU thinks about handling a high res 3D model like this would be with acceptable performance...
we'll see!;)

It grows, already page two. Need to do something more like poses next time, just as promised, and the "3D Division" had let me know something about a upcoming first post of the modelling-progress(!!!).
There's one more detailed rendering of a hand, together with the idea for a butchering-knife. Did it with a ball-pen which surprisingly worked out very well, until it dried out...

I like the inky weighted feel and your confidence with hands. The face/drawing reminds me of the old witch from the movie "The Dark Crystal". It would be good to also find out the poly count for a next gen model, (as you previously posted), or indeed the method of modeling.

These sketches are just seems like you've already got an excellent

3D People unfortunately haven't been coming up with much recently, and I've been a bit too busy, hence this piece took me some after-work hours over the past week...

- Thanks keyframekid! Must say that some body parts still vary in the sketches, but I think they will narrow down quickly as I prepare the schematics.

Now here's the feature detail. Doesn't look like friendly forest-elf any longer, but might give
some hint for nightmare-potential, if that's what "3D-Department" is lingering for..;)

Whoa, glad you like it, goro-san. Perhaps your Deer-Hunter wants to take this guy out for a ride? But he might be too sluggishly moving...
We'd sure like to drop by for doing the sketching, I think I can in general manage to take 2 days off..!

Concerning the teeth, In fact, it is not so much the paste, as you would find if you could smell that odour emerging from the gullet, but as the dentist says: nice circular brush strokes. As you mention it, he might should have some traces of peridontosis, or some rests of former meals between the gaps; )

thanks a lot to you all for your comments and motivation during this thread :)

apologees for not having added anything in quite a long time here.
3D-Model is in progress, but has not been posted yet. I do have some screenshots myself but I just exceeded my modest share of webspace with these final drawings that are about to follow...
These show a collection action poses meant for giving a clue and feel for animation, if once the creature is finally finisehd and rigged. I found nice inspiration for this within the anatomy FORUM here (thanks rebeccak:-), especially for that poses showing the ogre's backside and profile. I feel that the creature's proportions vary too much between the skteches, tough. yet the idea was to give a feel of the vitality and attitude rather than
doing a modelsheet.

You should draw him in a hillariously sexy pose, insteady of just pictures of him throwing rocks and trees and being all angry. He needs to have a tender side too.

I love your character design. They are really nice sketches and concepts..
The only thing that bothers me is the swords that were thrusted into ogre.. Arrows are fine but swords looks too much :shrug: They can kill even this beast nomatter what huge it is..
Anyway, arrows are good idea :)

Hey shoque ( excelent work!

It's great to see an Ogre that doesn't follow the LOTR style. Must be hard to be original in that area this days without beeing pulled by the enormous LOTR influence :)

That "monster" in some sketches looks kind of cute, so I think it would be great to see some sketches of a baby ogre, running and playing in the deep forest :thumbsup:

This is an amazing concept so far. I like the how he looked at the beginning of the thread. His horns resembled tree branches and his limbs had the detail of roots. That in mind, if this ogre were to hibernate during the cold season, he could blend in with forest surroundings, only to be awakened by a band of unknowing travelers. Very cool concept!!!

one thing: stop calling it an ogre.

i think calling it an ogre undermines your attempt to convey a new concept, because people already have strong ideas of what an ogre means (and in your case i think those ideas distract from the images)

This is an endearing character. I hope you are able to bring him to life in an animation or short story of some kind.

I would love to see this guy as a good guy, maybe hunted by the "good guys" or troll hunters. I always love ugly characters actually being the good guy.

This character automatically gave me a story of a kind troll, whom the villagers hate and hire a knight to kill him. Being bad is only a point of view.

Yeah he killed a villager or 2 who came to his territory eating his food and stealing his things but wouldn't a villager do the same thing if he came to their villager and started sneaking around, breaking things and stealing food and valuables? I see this character in this predicament. Well you did get me thinking of a story, great work

Very impressive work!

I think it's very interesting how you designed the eye sockets. The high brows and circular wrinkles give an innocent look to him, which makes him very simpathetic/likeable. In fact, the brows may be so high that you will have a hard time making the 3D version of him look angry without a lot of stretching.

Nice. Personally i think # 12 was the most complete as a 'whole' concept sketch. Looks very nice and has such character without being too cutesy. keep it up!
Z-brush is going to bring out that great vine feeling in the arms if you decide to go that root (haha..cough.)
I just love the trunk feeling to the arms in #12. Makes the creature that much more connected to its natural surroundings.

APD_JACK - Right, the swords I skiped in the later drawings, even in the original story any weapons would stick to the ogre's thick hair; still it was somewhat too much, but I now consider giving it the arrows back. Thanks!

lehmi - My '3D-Department' already critiziced the cute look early on, and I admit some heavy shifts of espression here. Still I wouldn't like him always fierce and horrible looking.
I'd rather go for potential for both - amicable and daunting ;)

Djampa - I Like the story too. Actually I found some diffrent interpretations of the story/ monster's look along the way and I intend keeping the root-like fingers, rather greenish with moss. Glad you like it!

JPGargoyle - Great idea with the baby-ogre!*Keeping it in mind! Thanks, but it's not an orc as most in LOTR but an ogre which obviously have very diffrent appearings in various cultures. But that thing I actually dreamed of :D

Flog - Like your thinking ;) Nice idea. The creature would maybe just eat some of the villager's sheep or cattle once in a while. Guess the "friendly-forst-guy-idea" benefits from having all that skulls removed from the belt by now. Could be a moody-darker version as well. I'll think about it*. Thanks!

I like "troll." But there's also "Forest/Tree Demon/Daemon," "Titan," "colossus," or something of that nature.

Troll is best in my opinon though as this is the definition:

A supernatural creature of Scandinavian folklore, variously portrayed as a friendly or mischievous dwarf or as a giant, that lives in caves, in the hills, or under bridges.


Or you could just call him a monster.

Okay, let's call it 'Troll' from here on!
Latest Version that occupied me several hours.
It shows the baby-versoin (or maye sprout) hiding in the thicket.
It might will take it a couple of hundred years until it's fully grown, just tree-like.

this is an awesome thread. Its great to see so many scketches to develop this character. the 3d folks must really apreciate all the refrences their getting. I noticed the buchers knife is absent from the most recient scketches, I think thats a good decision. IMO he would have a club with pieces of his victims that he didnt bother to clean off, or a more makeshift knife fasioned out of bone or rock.
