I've been working on some dog movement animations for the duck hunting game we are developing. The I have numerous clips that I can use as reference, but my run cycle just doesn't look like the video. :(. Does anyone have any experience with 4 legged character or animals that can give me ideas of what areas to fix.

I would say speed the whole thing up.. its difficult to see because its such a short clip. Loop it so it plays a little longer...like 3 to 5 seconds.

It doesn't look particularly fluid when the dog moves its front legs forwards--it's kind of a "snap". Try slowing that down some, and speed up the rest of the movements.

Has the hunter missed the duck and shot his dog instead? You have quite the limp going on, if you watch a dog run fast there is an overlap in the front two and back two legs, the spine has quite a bend to it.

ahhhh, Raleigh. May I assume you went to SCA?
To be quite frank, this animation needs lots of love.
smooth out the up and down head motion
smooth out the forward and back motion of the legs. Too much 'pop' as has been mentioned already.
Cycle is too slow, though someone said that already.
Tail is too linear, it needs to move in relation to the hips, but a few frames behind.
Not animation related, but it looks like Rover could use some skin weighting adjustments. His arms really shouldnt crumple like that when they bend.
Eadward Muybridge may have just what you need for this. Do a search for some of his animal cycles.
Maybe you could post the reference you are using, we could crit your cycle in relation to that.

hehe forgot to update u guys, sorry about that. In crunch time for our games release. I spent a little more time tweaking the dogs animation, but I'll get back to it after oyur inital Beta on wednesday.

OneSharpMarble: I have been watching a few videos for reference, I am planning on going back to tweak the animation after next week. hehe
adam crockett: I didn't goto SCA. I know alot of people who did. I graduated from RIT in Rochester NY. I ordered the Eadward Muybridge book, but it hasn't come in yet. I'm not really an animator. hehe I prefer modeling, being the lead artist on the project, It kinda fell into my lap.

i did up a really rough flash animation of how i think dogs move... it's not accurate by any means, the best would be for you to tak a video clip, and analyse the run frame by frame.
notice though, (and it's a really cartoony run :p) that the dog's spine really bends in and out. a reversal of curves like that really brings out life in any animation.
another thing... the path of the dog's head could be in a smoother arc.
that's pretty much what i can say about the run:D looks good though, i just think it needs a bit of spine bending:)

I made them using quicktime 7 pro....:(
I re-encoded them using Sorenson 3 codec. Sorry, for the troubles :(. We are 5 days until our debute at the local IGDA meeting. Lots of bugs to fix, artwork to touch up :). I'm planning on re-doing some of the dog animations when i have more time :D when we get aim towards release candidate 1. hehe
