View Full Version : Awkward Moments - Restroom - Magarnigal

wahey! Animation challenges finally, awesome!

OK, here's the concept:

A drunken alien stumbles into a restroom and is confronted by a urinal which was obviously not designed for use by a creature of his proportions (we see by the sign on the door, as it swings open, that the restroom is for completely different shaped aliens) Nevertheless, this plucky alien attempts to make use of the urinal as best he can, much hilarity ensues....

Concepts and model's n stuff to come.

ha, sounds like a great idea!

11-08-2002, 06:50 AM
Great concept!!!! But also sounds like alot to get in under 15 seconds. That'd be great 1-2 minute short!

11-08-2002, 07:02 AM
thanks! But don't worry I think it will fit...just. He will enter real quick an have come to terms with the situation in the first 3-4 seconds, so should have about 10 seconds to pull off one main gag - him attempting to but failing utterly to make proper use of the toilet.

OKie, this is our alien hero, in all his polygonal glory.

And this is what the alien "urinal" is looking like so far:

The exquisitely modeled box on the left is there for a reason, which hopefully will become apparent when I get some sort of animatic happening. Bear with me.

Time for some rigging...

Next: Animatic.

First pass of the animation.

animatic_03.avi ( 1,872kb Divx 5.02 codec

I took it a bit further in terms of detailing than I had intended, but it seemed to be working so I just went with it. Still a bit rough tho, things to fix, I'm not sure the final 'slip an fall' sequence is reading too well and its a hair overlength right now - 16 seconds. Comments and critiques welcome.

great ,very funny acting, good timing, and i love the idea.:):):):):):)
if you push your animation in another pass, you definetly got my vote. But since you mentioned the fall
maybe just this
When he slides down he keeps on looking at his foot, maybe let him panic mildly, maybe the fall would come out better.
just a suggestion.

Dude, I'm really impressed and inspired! I had an idea I was about to post for my entry, but after seeing yours, I am inspired to think of a more original and challenging direction!

Thanks for spurring us on!

Nicely done!

Holy cow. That rocks! He looks good and drunk when he walks in. Everything reads very well.

There's only a few things I can crit. And forgive me if you're already fixing these things...I know you said you have some adjusting to do....but I figure I'll point them out just as well.

Just before he climbs on the box, his legs are a little stiff and his right foot slides forward. That's the only thing I can say about the actual animation.

The other crit isn't about as much the animation, but more aesthetically. When he does get on the box, his left hand quickly jumps to the wall, then to the alien urinal thing. It looks as if he's trying to stabilize himself, but it just happens so quick, it doesn't quite read as to what he's doing that for. Maybe you can have it just go straight to the urinal instead. Just my opinion though. Not a biggy.

Hell man, this is a great animation. It's funny, it reads well, and the character is consistantly animated in his behavior. Excellent job!!! I'll be watching for new posts!

EDIT: Showed my work peers, they all love it and got a good laugh out of it.

I'm curious about how you went about animating him. Did you use a pop through method?

I ask because it looks really nice; both the poses and the timing.

11-13-2002, 08:58 PM
lol! Priceless!

11-14-2002, 12:07 AM

that's the stuff!! Really nice work!! So sweet...

11-14-2002, 02:51 AM
cheers guys, glad your all enjoying it :)

Fiber: Good suggestion, I'm going to try and get more of a sense of urgency throughout that whole straddling section.

Rogue: Thanks for the comments, you're right about the hands and legs, they need some tweaking and its definately something i'll look at when I get some time to do another pass.

Grayson: I'm not familiar with this term 'pop through', but I started by doing a very rough timing pass , just setting the dude in the key positions throughout the frame range, getting a feel for the overall timing. Then using that as a guide I animated the whole thing in a pose to pose style, but also discriminately detailing and loosening up sections as I went, confident that so long as I hit the key positions in the guide, the overall timing would come out ok.

Thanks everyone for your comments, I'll do some more on this over the weekend.

That's looking sweet so far! I like his zip action at the end. I thought the urinal was a shower though until I saw him using it so I thought it would read better if it were flipped over some. Hmm, maybe they like golden showers. ;)

Good job~!

It's strongly conveys the message of what he is doing there. since you've got this to this stage. what's next?

11-14-2002, 01:48 PM

i like it a LOT! :bounce:

11-18-2002, 01:13 AM (

Did a bit more over the weekend, not that much has changed, just tweaking some poses and timings n stuff.

muckywetnoodle: Hey, thats a nice idea, makes it a bit more recognizable. A friend suggested adding a little pull chain as well, that he could bump as he falls down. Will do if there is time.

This still cracks me up.

Ok, more crits. His foot doesn't slide anymore, but his right leg is still stiff as he moves toward the box. It also stays in that position a while after he does move forward. I'd have him take that step (with the right foot) a little sooner. Also, he looks as if he would fall backwards just before he moves forward. Yeah, he's drunk, but he still needs to get his locomotion from falling forward. He looks kindof like he'd fall backwards now. If you look at the quicktime and scroll with the keypad at the point he makes that first step with his left foot, you should see it. Easy fix, just move his waist forward a bit there.

His hand looks better now. If I might add a suggestion though, when he moves his left hand over to grab the urinal, you could have his body fall to his right and then catch the urinal with both he almost fell over. It looks like you might be going for that now, but I think his body needs to fall over some more if you are. It'll add more to his drunkedness.

A couple of things that I kind of liked more in the original one was when after he puts his right foot up against the stall, he looks to his left quickly and then back to his right...whereas now he's just looking to his left. It's a little slower now, but I like the original a little more. It's a quicker movement (although you could slow it a tad) and I like him looking back to the right again.

Another thing I liked a little more in the original was when his foot started to slip, he looked over at it. I thought that was just great and hope you put that back in. It gives a certain empathy to him because you know exactly what his thinking....oh, what am I going to do about this. :)

Well, everything but the first paragraph is reall just my opinion. There's nothing wrong with what you've got now, I just like some elements from the first one bit more.

Still, looks great and is funny!!!

heheheheh amazing........ i really like it.

it would be cool to see some piss dripping while he slips of the wall heheheh

Do you plan on finishing this animation? It would be a shame not to complete such a funny short...
