Here's my storyboard:

I hope it reads well...? Looking forward to rig that cactus! :D

11-08-2002, 04:51 AM
Yeah, it reads....unless he's not trying to get the cactus through the door and not walking away to get a saw to trim it and the cactus doesn't slap his face and take off running. If that's the case, it doesn't read at all. :)

It'll be funny to watch. Especially if you nail the surprise of the slap. This is just an opinion, but I'm not really into that camera angle. To me it's kind of keeping the action sort of distant and I don't feel like part of the scene...does that make sense. I think lowering the camera would help. But hey, that's easy to do in a 3d program!!!

Oh, a couple of those boards are showing up as black frames. :curious:

Hehe.. cool..

I was just wondering how that cactus is going to walk? Maybe something like this? :bounce: just slower (more mass)?
Or he could have long "arms" with which he could "walk". You know.. a bit like a gorilla.

11-08-2002, 12:07 PM
@Rogue: aye, the "cam angle" surely is not right in my scribbles. Also the black frames are blank cuts to suggest passing of the time. (sort of breaks - 15 seconds aren't enough time to get him to do 2 tries and walk away getting a hacksaw.)

@danylyon: i've been thinking about this problem for a while... my initial idea was to grow him some kind of legs - but this would probalby look cheesy (sort of early thirties non-disney funnies?!)

also the competition rules are quite restricting: sectional geometry only!

so i thought it would be more of a challenge to try him getting to walk convincingly WITHOUT appropriate limbs?!

someone else said it before: in a good animation you can make a box look alive....

i don't know much about biomechanics of spikey plants so i guess i just have to give it a go and TRY!

it will probalby do :bounce: as you said - OR: kind of sneak with a lot of hip movement across the floor (think of a beautiful woman with a long ball robe - you don't get to see any legs either)

Rogue hit the most important spot: i have to "nail the surprise of the slap"

11-08-2002, 12:25 PM
or.. he could grab his pot and putt it up so that his legs appear and walk away this way.

meet Mrs. Cactus:

gonna start rigging it this evening...

11-08-2002, 01:50 PM
when we will meet Mr.Mover?:bounce:
go on maelstrom !
present us mr Mover!
in wich software are you working?

11-08-2002, 01:56 PM
I'll start Mr. Mover after Mrs. Cactus - after all: "Ladys First!" - isn't it?

still not sure wheter she's gonna have legs or not... i think i start with a non-legged version and add some if it's not working out.

I'm on Maya.

The top edge of the pot is too sharp.. but besides that.. mhm.. I like!

11-08-2002, 02:54 PM
Seems like a nice idea. Looking forward to some animation.

11-09-2002, 05:43 PM
rigged the cactus yesterday evening and added some controls...
it was fun thinking about it's required movement capabilities.

i will add more controls tomorrow and do some quick animation tests.

11-13-2002, 04:35 PM
mhm.. any updates?.. any animation tests?

12-09-2002, 01:28 AM
it's done! :bounce:

i spent this weekend animating and finished my entry. i didn't have enough frames left to do the whole story depicted in my scribbles, so i had to cut a bit.

i think it's still quite ok! here are the links to the FINAL:

Mover maelstrom FINAL (.zip) (http://steinmannbob.ch/div/maelstream.zip)

one problem:

I was early enough on time, but i can't login to the challenge page.
tried everything, getting new passwords, loggin in and out on cgtalk and i even created a second account (maelstrom2)

nothing did help :(

on cgtalk everything works fine, but not on the challenge page. unfortunately i can't upload my animation, so PLEASE accept my entry!!!
i wrote an email to the webmaster of cgchallenge and PM'ed lildragon.

i'll send my entry to these two adresses personally and do really hope they find out what the problem is...

12-09-2002, 02:38 AM
i guess there must be some kind of database error ?!

12-09-2002, 02:42 AM
the upload for animations is not enabled yet dont panic :)

12-09-2002, 03:00 AM
hehe, you're right, i'm slightly panicking! :scream:

it's not that i can't upload, i can't even LOGIN!

12-09-2002, 09:42 PM
thx to Leonard and Lildragon, they solved the problem! :applause:

i'm in too now.

12-09-2002, 10:34 PM
haha..nice one Maelstrom..loved it..

Damn that 15 seconds though eh... I would love to see the full thing without time restriction...

12-10-2002, 02:12 AM
Thx nemises, glad you liked it! :wavey:

i know, it lost some of it's point and you can see a little glitch where i had to cut it. but i don't tell where it is! ;)

i'll probably do a full version later on when people think it was worth it.

I like the action of him carrying the plant into the door. From that point onward:
-the plant being set down is unnatural movement and too quick.
-It looks like his motion curves could use some smoothing. He cuts from pose to pose quite stiffly.
-At the hold while he's thinking he goes dead as only his hand is really moving.
-could use some anticipation for the cactus hitting the guy
-Also needs follow-through in general. Add a some more bounce at impacts and such.

Congrats getting it done in time also!

12-19-2002, 12:50 PM
thx for the crits! :bounce:

it was my first animation and i had to rush in the end a lot. half of it was keyframed in a little bit more than an hour. when he sets down the plant he actually drops (almost throws) it at the end of the movement. that was the idea, but maybe it doesn't read right.

i hope the next one will get better...
