I'm looking to make some smoke columns. The Large Black sooty one you'd find from a oil well fire or building fire. Not looking for anything really fancy. It doesn't have to show flames or stuff like that ore move around. Just around a fixxed point :)
cool! I hope you share it when you're done. I'd like to see the settings you come up with.

I'm sorry I didn't make the above to clear did I?
I am looking for information on how to make such a smoke column. I'm new when it comes to HV and Particles and I am looking for guidance. I have searched the Major Lightwave sites (Flay, LWG, Preset Central, Main Lightwave tuts on the Web) but I have yet to find anything that fits what I am looking for.
Any help? I mean is HV/Particle combo the right apporach or spheres of deferent sizes be easier and less render time? Or some of both?

the doc has a couple of short exercises, after you have finished them you can load hv presets that come with lw and study them. there are quite some, and the items under Clouds and Fire&Smoke may fit your need.
here are some links to online hv tuts:

Heres a test I did recently using a single object and some procedurals to get a column of black smoke.

Larry. That is very close to what I am wanting. Any tips on how you did it?

Add an emitter and apply a gravity value to it.
If you want something more dynamic I suggest you look into using a wind effector.
As for texturing, if time isn't a factor, just alter a cloud preset to dark grey, or for the speed conscious use sprites.
That may have been usefull, tell me if ya need more info:thumbsup:

I updated and moved the smoke colume quicktime movie and another related quicktime:
I have some things in the works to make these tutorials available on CD CHEAPLY in the next few days.
Neither of these uses any particles or hypervoxels. The smoke column took 2.3 sec/frame to render.
