View Full Version : Select by Name Version 3

09 September 2005, 12:28 AM
Hey all,

I've updated the select by Name to version 3!! :) basically the main difference is:

a) Scaleable!
b) Uses Active x ListView to display the object details so now you get all pretty colors.

Other then that no real changes. Beyond this (if I get any time) I'm going to work on optimizations.

So give it a play. (

Nice, I hope you don't mind some feedback on features.

I wish "Normal" "Hidden" "Frozen" were radio style instead of filter style. You know, you click Hidden and it unclicks Normal. Yes...I'm lazy. ;)

It would be cool if there was a biped category. I find myself selecting all the biped objects often to scale my timing.

Lastly, It seems to crash on me when I try to resize the window.

-- Error occurred in rlt_newSelectionTool.resized()
>> MAXScript Rollout Handler Exception: -- Unknown property: "width" in EditTextControl:edt_stringFilter <<
>> MAXScript Rollout Handler Exception: -- Unknown property: "width" in EditTextControl:edt_stringFilter <<

Hey thanks for the feedback!

Radio buttons type system would stop you from being able to see both hidden and frozen objects with non-hidden and objects. I might make it so if you hold ctrl and click the buttons the others automatically click off?

biped stuff I'll look into

The error your are getting is because you're using max 6.. I'll put in a catch for this now.

OK, I've updated the upload with the ctrl click on the mode buttons and the catch for the max 6 crash.

Thanks again!

Hey, thank's! But i have some error scrit when i resize the pannel. :(

PS: I use a lot your Select by name v2. :)

Looks good!!

Have some suggestions though, the ability to save preferences, like size and show subtree...
Don't know about the delete key, looks out of place and scary what if you exidentaly missed the invert button... :)
I also think it's better to stick with max conventions regarding colors. The text now has a green color with me... I would prefer it to be the regular style max uses, but that's me..
In a new scene with no objects yet, I hit select all and the script crashes..
Cancel should be named close matching the selection floater.

But I like it a lot, the direct way of selecting objects filtering etc...

Keep it up!

OK, I updated it with some major changes:

1) the ability to save window size
2) the colors for the object display window are now present in the color manager (inside customize interface|colors|Select By Name V3) so you can set the colors to be whatever you want.
3) "In a new scene with no objects yet, I hit select all and the script crashes.." - fixed
4) Renamed 'cancel' to 'close'

5) Saves "ALL" settings for the rollout

Excellent tool!
One more request though ;)

Maybe there some way of closing the dialog on hitting enter...
My workflow on selecting objects..
hit the H key
select objects
hit enter / or select button

But since this tool wil directly select the objects it won't close after selecting, maybe the enter key kan help there... just a suggestion though... for those of us with (sometimes) limited workspace...

Cool tool!

"Maybe there some way of closing the dialog on hitting enter..."

Done! ;)

Hope you don't hate me by now .. but the the list types seem broken, can't get it to filter geometry and camera's and such..!? Also hitting enter does nothing on my install... anyplace specific where I should hit enter?

And also it save my preferences, but it doesn't update them when opening, for example show subtree, is selected when openening but it doesn't reflect in the list...

Hate do be the bringer of this sort of news, I know it has taken many hours to write this...

Keep it up and thanx!

Nice work man!!

Yes! This is cool! It even displays Pflow components!!!

If there's one more thing to comment is that the colors don't load upon opening the dialog for the first time after closing and reopening it works fine!

Great tool,

Hey all,

I've just updated it with my (TM) "internal update system". So if you downloaded it within the last couple of days you should already be getting the prompt to update. If not download the newest one and you'll get the option to prompt to update.

Wow, very cool script
Some feedback:

clicking on columnheader to sort
shift+click don't work correctly :(
click+drag to multiselect

Great script! The sort of thing I've been planning to write for *years*. Thanks!

My comments:

I added a minimize box in the titlebar
I got rid of the bold font, which makes it a little easier on the eye
Not sure about some of the colour choices! Maybe break these out into the ini file so that the user can change them manually?
Also - what's with the THREE new ini files it's created!!?? One file with sections would suffice, surely?
But great job. Really useful.

I kicked off the standard "select by name" ;)
Your's is much better..

- renaming an object directly in this tool would be great!!
- after double clicking an object maybe the window could close

I don't think so...
- isn't so hard to rename objects with default tools
- press Enter to close window

I often drag toolwindows to the right side of the screen and over the object's name textbox. In addition to that it's practical to rename an objects in the same window where all objects' names are in.

the closing by doubleclick isn't that important... ;)

You can drag Command Panel to right side :p

Look at this: (

...but renaming "in place" after hiting F2 (like in explorer), will be really cool :)

Thanks guys for the feedback.

I'm not really using Max much anymore but maybe sometime I'll get a chance to make some updates.
