Here is my first concept , an F14 tomcat coming in for an emergency landing. I would need to add something in the foreground , maybe a flight deck guy running for cover or something.
Still trying to come up with other ideas, any comments appreciated.

Great to see you Mike! Good luck! An emergency crew standing by would be good too. Maybe show why the plane is coming in for a crash landing..have a dogfight going on in the background.

Here is a concept sketch showing the energy station for a vast area getting its energy from solar collectors in space. The energy station distributes the energy in a cascade like fashion. Emphasis will be on the terrain around the station as well. If I go with this concept I will do a better sketch, maybe color even.

Hey all,

I am trying to come up with a better idea , so I would like some input for some concept ideas .

Here are some of my ideas.

1. The Wright brothers are flying their plane , a father and small child are watching . I will try to capture the childs amazement at this new invention.

2. The Biblical Lot is fleeing sodom as it is being destroyed in the background , also I would show his wife as a salt statue. The idea of a spectacular fearful event that you can't look at but want too should be seen in Lots face. Could also be Vesuvias erupting and the Pompeians (spelled incorrectly I am sure) either indifferent or running for their lives.

3. First contact with aliens. Lots of buildings and an imposing spacecraft with smaller craft as well. Maybe some conflict with religious belief or the Aliens are going to deceive us sort of thing.

4. In the future a guy drives an old model T car down the road with pedestrians staring at the driver. The driver has a big smile on his face.

5 A helicopter rescues someone trapped on the edge of a waterfalls. A distant shot with emphasis on some landscape as well.

6. A future city's energy generating center getting its energy from the sun or solar collector in space. A vast landscape surrounds the energy centre .See above image.

Hopefully one of these could turn into something I like a little more than my other concept . I wanted to enter the 2d challenge too but coming up with one concept is proving to be a tough job. Comments appreciated.

3, 5 and 6 are the most spectacular of the choices. Not sure which I'd do. 3 and 5 would allow you to establish the image from an emotional view as well. Lets see a sketch of 3 and 5.

I really like 5 and 6. 3 is ok, but maybe a bit too cliche? I think 6 would be better if you want to show off an enviroment, as well as the energy fx goign on. 5 seems like it would be better right upclose to the action, but depending on the compostion, a distant shot can work. good luck getting those ideas out.

Dude! I'm subscribed, fantastic finish you had to M&S i must say. I personally like 1 and 4, the others have a somewhat 'GSO' feel to it, I think it wouldd be nice to bring down the scale of the image and focus on the 'human spectacular', know what I mean? 4 has a lot of potential I think, you could show the guy jumping off a ramp in his car or something, could look really awesome!

Hmmm, tricky... the last sketch for number 6 looks like it can be really dramatic/spectacular.
But I really like the originality of the first two concepts, plus as keetmun says it can be really interesting to have more focus on the human reactions.
Number 4 could also work that way. Well, you've no problems in coming up with ideas anyway - good luck with whatever you choose :thumbsup:

I've just already discovering your thread... and the thing that jump into my face is your concept #2 sketch... really impressive... I love a lot airplane but I think you can forget the first concept for this one... I like this idea of sun energy station...
#4 appear interesting too... fun and contrast... but I'm not sure about the spectacular impact... but why not... :D

Here is my concept for "First contact" , I decided to go with a middle ages type setting. I will probably make the gorge more prominent and add a quite a few more buildings. The alien ships are just place holders now , it could also be a supernatural event instead of aliens.
Let me know your comments.

Mike you have great sketchez! Personaly i think previous versions were better. Only for the composition itself. This one above is a bit empty on the top half of the image. Of course you can modify it, but now it looks a bit non-balanced. Am sure you will find your way as i see youur works here. :wavey: :thumbsup:

Hey all,
Thanks for the comments, I have finally decided on what I am doing. I am going to do the "First contact " concept as in my latest sketch although things will change as the composition isn't that great as Tremoside pointed out but I like the vast feel to it.

I am also planning on doing the concept #6 or the Solar energy station sketch for the 2d challenge as I have wanted to large painting like this for a while. Hopefully I can finish both but only time will tell.

If you were to go with the last sketch you maybe can tilt the canvas and throw something enormous in the sky to balance out the compo, No?

Here is a sketch of the Main castle on the left side of the image. This is just an idea of the style the model will probably be quite different when I model it.

Here is the start of modeling the main castle,the textures aren't final just reasonable placeholders while I model. This is just one wall of a much larger castle, may need a few more details but the castle isn't that big in the final so this should do. Let me know your comments and crits.

This update shows more progress on the castle model , I just have to do the front wall and then duplicate what I have for the right side with a few additions so it doesn't look too symmetrical.
I think the castle needs something on the lower part of the walls, any thoughts on this.

Here is the castle model almost completed just need to add a few things to the entrance , maybe an insignia over the drawbridge door.Also, the textures need some work. Comments and crits are welcomed.

I think it could look good to have some climbing vegetation covering some of the lower parts - it would break up the symmetry and soften it a bit. Perhaps wine, woodbine or something like that.

Gunilla- the vegetation is a good idea, the castle will be surrounded by lots of trees too so that should help.
Squibbit- thanks , sometimes when I draw on paper I am looking for the Ctrl+z to undo .
mac_andre- hopefully the texture I put on later will fix this a bit.

Well, here is my first test to create a terrain. This is just a test terrain, I was experimenting with textures for the vertical rock face. This was done in Carrara's vm , I didn't use the terrain editor . I then textured the grass and rocks with one shader . I am happy that I got some vertical and some not so vertical rockfaces happening on the main vertical rockface.
The trees were done using carrara's tree modeler and then Replicated . They are not in any great position yet just seeing how they looked against the terrains.

• You are specially good in landscapes Mike, i know it is a test but i suggest more colors in the rocks when final textures are there, the trees in front look out of place, the others are well positioned, good advances with your image! :thumbsup: see you in your next post!

Hey guys,

In this update I added some color variation to the vertical rock face,changed the tree size to get a better sense of scale and added a walkway at the top edge of the ledge. I am happy with the way this looks so I will model my terrain soon, thanks for the comments about the colors.

Here is an update to my concept skecth, I hand drew the background then added the foreground elements on the computer.
Still dont know if it will be a spaceship they are looking at or a more supernatural/spaceship/light fx event or not.
I needed some characters in it and I think this adds to the image. Let me know your comments and crits

Here is the layout of the elements in 3d,trying to get an interesting angle on the scene. I wanted the viewer to get the feeling of overlooking the valley. I added the spaceship which is from my GSO entry and placed in this scene to see how it looks, I will model a new one for this scene if I decide to go that way.
Let me know your comments and crits on this composition and camera angle.

Hey all,
In this update I made the castle a little larger,did some more modeling to the vertical rock faces , added the gorge floor and river,added the distant mountains and also the waterfalls. I also cropped the image a little differently .
I think I will either start modeling the buildings for the village on the right or model the bridges.
If you have any comments or crits let me know.

Here are some low poly models with some textures on them,the buildings are middle ages time frame . These buildings are going on the right side of my image and will be quite small but I need quite a few of them. I will maybe model 10 more and then duplicate them to create the village.

In this update I have a more complete balcony, I am probably going to add a Stone bench and a couple of stone flower pot. The colors and textures may change but I think I am happy with the look of the balcony.

I have updated the balcony, I completed the railing around most of the balcony edge. I will have taller columns at the right edge of the image which I will model later.
I add the stone bench and Flower pots, a couple of edges need a little smoothing but this is generally what they will look like except I will add some flowers later.

I added the balcony to the scene as well as added the village to the right . I will add more houses etc in the distance as well I have to add alot of trees to the landscape.

Here is the start to the bridge model , don't want to go to far in case I have to make changes. This has a texture map I created mixed in with a modified image of some concrete using a Turbulence mixer. Still need to tweak the texture a bit.
I think I will complete the bridge with this design , I am trying to add a way for people to get from the top tier to the bottom tier . Should I add stairs or an elevator type gondola, any ideas on this would be helpful.

I am almost done the bridge, I may add some extra detail and am still thinking about the stairs/elevator issue.

Here is a close up render of the bridge and the inset picture is the whole bridge done using low quality render settings.

Now I just have to place them in the scene, let me know if you have any comments.

In this update I added the new bridges to the scene and also I have added the fluted column in the foreground on the right.
It is hard to see but I have shown a couple farmers fields behind the village.
I may start modeling the people and horses to place on the bridge and roads to help get a sense of scale.

Climax- Thanks for the comments, I was going to add more fields to the land (field of wheat) which should add color . I was also going to add a variety of tree colors to the scene which hopefully will help. The ship is not the final one , this one is from my GSO entry so I have to model another one which will fit this scene better.

Hey ,

Here is a low poly model of a horse, I didn't spend too much time on it as none of the horses in the scene are going to be too big. The inset image of the horse is probably twice as large as any horse will be in my image so I think the quality is good enough.
I did a quick uv map of the horse and then painted the texture map which is blended with a procedural shader. I will create a bunch of horses from this model.
Let me know what you think.

Well, here is my first update in a long while I took a break from this for a while. Actually I modelled the wagon a week or so ago but didn't post it . This is still not going to be that prominent in the final so the missing reigns shouldn't be noticeable.

Dude those are pretty nice updates! Since they're gonna be a bit far off I guess they should be ok, really depends on the actual distance, so you'll prob have to just put it in the final comp to see.

Well, I have started some modelling again. I usually model everything in Carrara studio , but I modelled this in Hexagon 1.2 . I like the new symmetrical modeling feature it has.
This is the base head which I will use for both of the foreground characters. I have to add the ears but I think the proportions are okay so far.

Wow. What an amazing scene. Your attention to detail and quality in all the individual elements is great. I think that your choice of subject and the scene is a really smart decision and obviously plays to your strengths. I can't wait to see this little world fully realized and rendered. Working on this contest is very difficult for me right now, but here is a small update. I add the sandals,hair,finished the hands and added some work on the robe. Still need to add some thickness to the robe , I will texture the character next.

Here is just my scene so far with a quick 2d sketch of the alien ship composited into the scene . Trying to get a feel for the shape of the ship .

What do you think , does the ship fit. I wanted a ship that looks like it could be menacing and peaceful at the same time.

Them guys lookin good. As for the scetch, I don't think it fits well. the other one you had was a better shape, maybe round it out more. this current scetch seems too busy of a design but that does keep things interesting in the final shot. I don't know, maybe its just me but i like it and i don't, I say try another scetch. I see something like what you had before but cross it with a jellyfish.

The environment is looking great! When I think of a ship for this, I definitely think of something very different from what you have... Something much rounder, elongated and filling the empty space a bit to the left and down from where you have your ship now. Probably larger, too!

Not an easy choice... I personnaly like the design for the first one- it's well propartioned and have a good harmony. On the other hand a more "stretched" and less round shape maybe fits better in your scene? :shrug:

Here is a model of the house that will be in the foreground,you will see this house from the top in the final image sort of like this image. This house will be surrounded by trees so I am not that concerned with the sparse looking walls.
I was thinking of adding some sort of Gutters,downspouts and a rain barrel . Do you think they had this in the middle ages?

I have added the sky to my image and the start of my alien ship, the lighting in general needs to be fixed up but this is my first attempt at a sky concept.
I used Carrara studio 5's new Volumetric clouds to create this entire sky with no postwork, I am very happy with the skies C5 can produce. I am building my scene in C4 so I created the sky in C5 and then used a jpeg of the sky as a backdrop in C4 .

Great job on your image! I've been trying for a similar effect (with cliff and moss textures), but with far less beautiful results. All of your elements are blending together quite well, and the lighting is great. The only thing I'd suggest is a bit less lens flare. Alexi.

The sense of scale on this is fantastic. It invites your eye on a journey that seems endless. You can also feel the scale of time - from the geologic ages that carved the canyon to the civilization that devoted centuries to building the bridges to the simple chess board awaiting a move.Definitely spectacular.

In this update I have added the first bunch of trees to the gorge as well I fixed the pose of the characters as I was having problems with the charachters keeping there original pose once bringing them into the scene.
Looking for some comments or crits on the trees if possible,do they fit the scene well?

I like the crispness of the shadows on the foreground figures, but perhaps the shadow being cast from the spaceship should be softer, since that area is way across the canyon? hmm I am not sure, but I guess it is debateable.

You don't need something really burned... but if I judge with your style of shadow... especially visible with the alien ship... you must have a lighting more contrasted... that can increase a lot the readibility of your picture yet fantastic... to go to the spectacular...

I have added more trees on the right side of the image and changed the lighting a bit more. The sky still needs to be brighter but I am getting closer .
Are the trees on the right too big, I am thinking a little smaller but I sortof like it this way . I now have to add the trees on the left and then the ones on the distant mountains.

Actually I think I prefer it without so many trees. Especially the ridge on the left. You had that ancient feeling that seems a little diminished now. (What was the name of that village on the mound where Theodon lived in "lord of the Rings"?)
Sounds like a great idea to enhance the spaceship with some kind of lights. They remind me a little bit of Douglas Adams description of the Vogon ships in Hitchhikers Guide. "The spaceships hung in the sky like bricks don't"

Still one of my favorite images though. Good luck on the end run!

I have added the trees to the distant mountains as well as the impression of sprawling city . I used Carrara 5's new replicator tools to do these trees. I used Replica for all the other trees.
I also brightened the image in post , maybe to much , it is hard to tell with having the rest of the image there to compare against. I will render the background as a separate layer.

Well, here is the alien ship modeled and textured . I may add a bit to the textures , like some reflection and change the lettering on the ship.
I was after a ship that looked organic but mechanical at the same time . Now I can concentrate on rendering out the middle ground layer of my composition.
Let me know if you have any comments or crits.

Well ,here is my image with all the layers composited together. I have a foreground ,middle ground,background and haze layer.
I have yet to add some postwork or another layer for the mist in the gorge and maybe a flock of birds flying about. Also,I am going to add some lighting effects to the ship .
Let me know if you have any comments or crits.

eventually just a little bit more contrast with some more vivid color... but is really a personal feeling... wow very nice view and result ! :thumbsup:

Wow Mike - this is really an impressive scenery now, great work!
Only thing I notice is that the objects, especially the ship, seems a bit to evenly lit. The shadows they cast is hardly noticeable on the things. Maybe make your main light more intense and reduce the ambience would be good - other than that, I have no comments just some drooling :drool:

hey man thats really cool , i think that the work in the textures is very nice, also the illumination is just perfect....by the way...do you know a very cool tutorial to texture mountains like yours and how to get that illumination?:cool:

Jjdog- yes I would like a little more vivid color too, when I did the middle ground layer I chickened out and reduced the brightness a bit . I will try something to increase the vivid colors a bit.

Gunilla- yes I was planning on adding a bit more contrast lighting to the ship , as far as the shadow it casts I think it is just the angle of the ship and its shape with respect to the sun that make the shadow smaller than you would think. I will try and do something about this too. Thanks.

I have difficulty with lighting stuff but I am working on it so I am glad you like it. It is rendered with Carrara's Skylite rendering which is like a lightdome , also carrara uses a terrain bump shader which worked well here for the terrains.

Hey Carlos,

I am not familiar with Maya,Lightwave or 3dsmax but I am sure they would have the same thing.
In the color channel or difuse channel I would place 2 stone texture maps and then use a "blender" function to mix the 2 together . I would also place these same textures in the terrain bump channel so they match the color channel.

Hope this helps a bit.

Last time I saw your thread was like a month ago. I see you came a LONG way since :thumbsup:

but I gotta tell ya, your forground really gets "swallowed" in the midground !
really man ! its hard to make a focal point that way. U gotta do one of the following to get more depth -

different lighting / contrast levels

I'd go with either the second or the third in your case.
I think some more fogging could really really add depth to your scene.
since you got everything layered up in PS this shouldnt be a problam. just play with it.
I hope to see an update on this !

Thanks for the comments, this is the first time I have rendered in layers so I can now I can play with things like fog and lighting to the middle ground layer. I will probably do a bit of both of fog and contrast , I will try and emphasize some more depth throughout the image.

Well, here is a possible final image . I tried to emphasize some depth in the image from foreground to background by adding the fog to the gorge. Adjusted the contrast a bit too to the middle ground layer.
I also added some lighting to the ship,if I can do a convincing static electricity I will add that later.

this is alot bettr allready !

I'de say dont be afraid to saturate the front a bit more and de-saturate (and slightly de-contrast) the mid ground and especially the backround (which would have much more depth the more u do this).
I'd play with the levels\color balance some more too.

anyways this is good enaugh allready to me !

At final stages the most importent is to leave the image for few hours, don`t think about it and go back... that gives a fresh approach when you see the things which works well and those which wors bad.

Well, here is the final image. I saturated the foreground and desaturated the mid and backgrounds . I added a couple of bird layers but they are barely visible in the smaller renders.
I think the image isn't quite as flat as it was before. I learned quite a bit about working in layers in this contest and it definitely has its advantages in postwork.
I will post my story that goest with the image in a bit.

Here is my final image with the story line , my image is Titled , It's your move. Hopefully the story is understandable as I am the farthest thing from a writer. Thanks to all who stopped by my thread and good luck to all.


It was a bright and sunny day when it came, some people couldn’t see how dark it really was , they seemed to be mesmerized by it’s lights and massive size. This spectacular mechanical bird brought with it ideas that were intended to destroy our spectacular ancient civilization and its beliefs. They wanted all peoples to be their subjects , they had a game plan, a strategy to replace our rightful King, this was there first move to show themselves in such an impressive way..

In response , many people were awestruck with there opening move and were frozen, they couldn’t see a move ahead and their King would be thrown down in time with there full consent. However, many people recognized there devious intent and walked away from this spectacle and after contemplation and thought made the correct move and there rightful King still stands.

We are all pawns for the taking in this game of there’s but if we make the right moves we will remain standing with the true king in his Spectacular Kingdom.
