Here is my first concept , an F14 tomcat coming in for an emergency landing. I would need to add something in the foreground , maybe a flight deck guy running for cover or something.
Still trying to come up with other ideas, any comments appreciated.

09 September 2005, 02:08 AM
hehe, nice concept. Took you a while to join in. Good luck:thumbsup:

Great to see you Mike! Good luck! An emergency crew standing by would be good too. Maybe show why the plane is coming in for a crash landing..have a dogfight going on in the background.

09 September 2005, 02:29 AM
• HELLO THERE! how have u been? Nice to have u in, I guess you were waiting until have your sketch right? the concept is cool, may i suggest a mega big explotion in the background and chaos in the crew in foreground, maybe they have not seen the comming Tomcat and they would probably die if it crash BOOM! i can feel spectacularness allready! :scream:

09 September 2005, 03:21 PM
hi mike . nice to see you in.

the concept is looking good . certainly has the sense of speed! are u going to add more elements?

09 September 2005, 04:09 PM
Hey all ,
Thanks for the comments , I really don't know if this is the concept I am after . I am trying to come up with another idea but I am drawing blanks. I am sort of waiting for a better idea to pop into my head.

09 September 2005, 05:09 PM
concept is cool. waiting for the updates:thumbsup:

09 September 2005, 08:22 PM (

Here is a concept sketch showing the energy station for a vast area getting its energy from solar collectors in space. The energy station distributes the energy in a cascade like fashion. Emphasis will be on the terrain around the station as well. If I go with this concept I will do a better sketch, maybe color even.

09 September 2005, 08:28 PM
Hey all,

I am trying to come up with a better idea , so I would like some input for some concept ideas .

Here are some of my ideas.

1. The Wright brothers are flying their plane , a father and small child are watching . I will try to capture the childs amazement at this new invention.

2. The Biblical Lot is fleeing sodom as it is being destroyed in the background , also I would show his wife as a salt statue. The idea of a spectacular fearful event that you can't look at but want too should be seen in Lots face. Could also be Vesuvias erupting and the Pompeians (spelled incorrectly I am sure) either indifferent or running for their lives.

3. First contact with aliens. Lots of buildings and an imposing spacecraft with smaller craft as well. Maybe some conflict with religious belief or the Aliens are going to deceive us sort of thing.

4. In the future a guy drives an old model T car down the road with pedestrians staring at the driver. The driver has a big smile on his face.

5 A helicopter rescues someone trapped on the edge of a waterfalls. A distant shot with emphasis on some landscape as well.

6. A future city's energy generating center getting its energy from the sun or solar collector in space. A vast landscape surrounds the energy centre .See above image.

Hopefully one of these could turn into something I like a little more than my other concept . I wanted to enter the 2d challenge too but coming up with one concept is proving to be a tough job. Comments appreciated.

09 September 2005, 09:14 PM
It`s nice and keep ur reason to do that .goodluck ...

09 September 2005, 09:22 PM
3, 5 and 6 are the most spectacular of the choices. Not sure which I'd do. 3 and 5 would allow you to establish the image from an emotional view as well. Lets see a sketch of 3 and 5.

09 September 2005, 11:41 PM
I really like 5 and 6. 3 is ok, but maybe a bit too cliche? I think 6 would be better if you want to show off an enviroment, as well as the energy fx goign on. 5 seems like it would be better right upclose to the action, but depending on the compostion, a distant shot can work. good luck getting those ideas out.

09 September 2005, 12:42 AM
Dude! I'm subscribed, fantastic finish you had to M&S i must say. I personally like 1 and 4, the others have a somewhat 'GSO' feel to it, I think it wouldd be nice to bring down the scale of the image and focus on the 'human spectacular', know what I mean? 4 has a lot of potential I think, you could show the guy jumping off a ramp in his car or something, could look really awesome!

Cheers mate

09 September 2005, 05:55 AM
Hmmm, tricky... the last sketch for number 6 looks like it can be really dramatic/spectacular.
But I really like the originality of the first two concepts, plus as keetmun says it can be really interesting to have more focus on the human reactions.
Number 4 could also work that way. Well, you've no problems in coming up with ideas anyway - good luck with whatever you choose

09 September 2005, 07:26 AM
Yep . always good to have human re-action dude

09 September 2005, 08:01 AM
Nice concepts so far, good luck to ya!

09 September 2005, 07:47 AM
I've just already discovering your thread... and the thing that jump into my face is your concept #2 sketch... really impressive... I love a lot airplane but I think you can forget the first concept for this one... I like this idea of sun energy station...
#4 appear interesting too... fun and contrast... but I'm not sure about the spectacular impact... but why not... :D

Best wishes for you, I'm waiting your final choice

09 September 2005, 01:09 AM (

Here is my concept for "First contact" , I decided to go with a middle ages type setting. I will probably make the gorge more prominent and add a quite a few more buildings. The alien ships are just place holders now , it could also be a supernatural event instead of aliens.
Let me know your comments.

09 September 2005, 01:26 AM
Mike you have great sketchez! Personaly i think previous versions were better. Only for the composition itself. This one above is a bit empty on the top half of the image. Of course you can modify it, but now it looks a bit non-balanced. Am sure you will find your way as i see youur works here. :wavey:

09 September 2005, 02:01 AM
Hey all,
Thanks for the comments, I have finally decided on what I am doing. I am going to do the "First contact " concept as in my latest sketch although things will change as the composition isn't that great as Tremoside pointed out but I like the vast feel to it.

I am also planning on doing the concept #6 or the Solar energy station sketch for the 2d challenge as I have wanted to large painting like this for a while. Hopefully I can finish both but only time will tell.

09 September 2005, 02:08 AM
If you were to go with the last sketch you maybe can tilt the canvas and throw something enormous in the sky to balance out the compo, No?

Well anyway, its great to see you have decided on a on the previous concept that you have done, I will check back, lata!

09 September 2005, 05:11 PM (

Here is a sketch of the Main castle on the left side of the image. This is just an idea of the style the model will probably be quite different when I model it.
Any comments let me know.

09 September 2005, 05:16 PM (

Lets try that again

09 September 2005, 08:45 PM
so good progress

09 September 2005, 11:25 PM (

Here is the start of modeling the main castle, the textures aren't final just reasonable placeholders while I model. This is just one wall of a much larger castle, may need a few more details but the castle isn't that big in the final so this should do. Let me know your comments and crits.

09 September 2005, 12:30 AM
no crits mmoir! the castle is coming out nicely!cant wait to see the whole one !
have fun!

09 September 2005, 01:51 AM
Wow mike you're going grandiose again, nice start on the modeling and I like your idea of first contact in the middle age.

09 September 2005, 02:10 AM
hey dude. come to say good luck and looking forward to seeing some great work mike. Your concept is pretty kewl..and great start on the model.. see ya soon, subscribed

09 September 2005, 06:25 PM (

This update shows more progress on the castle model , I just have to do the front wall and then duplicate what I have for the right side with a few additions so it doesn't look too symmetrical.
I think the castle needs something on the lower part of the walls, any thoughts on this.

09 September 2005, 10:52 PM
Hi mmoir, nice start, i look forward to your images.

09 September 2005, 12:17 AM (

Here is the castle model almost completed just need to add a few things to the entrance , maybe an insignia over the drawbridge door. Also, the textures need some work. Comments and crits are welcomed.

09 September 2005, 12:35 AM
Now I can judjment alittle about final result .really really strong .no need to any crit or comment , just Gudluck ...:scream:

09 September 2005, 05:03 AM
Mike, you're having fun? aren't you.

This is looking really nice, can't wait to see it with final textures.

09 September 2005, 06:17 AM
Oh mate, you're faster than me... already finishing your fantastic castle, and if you see me... always don't finish the first stair of my dungeon :scream: hahahaha
Good continuation Mike :bounce:

09 September 2005, 10:26 AM
castle is looking great! slow down man!:) outer wall turrets and there cone shaped roof looks amazing but roof of the main body is dull.. are u going to add more detail there?
two thumbs up!

09 September 2005, 11:49 AM
very nice model, texture looks repetitive, but still a WIP... :wip: congrats!

09 September 2005, 12:00 PM
can't wait to see to your finish one!!!:)

09 September 2005, 12:13 PM
great design, but still looking like a miniature. ;)
i think you will fixed that... later ;)

09 September 2005, 12:44 PM
sweet work dude, hah , i tried to rotate it, reflex ....

09 September 2005, 02:09 PM
I think the castle needs something on the lower part of the walls, any thoughts on this.

Very nice work with the castle, Mike!
I think it could look good to have some climbing vegetation covering some of the lower parts - it would break up the symmetry and soften it a bit. Perhaps wine, woodbine or something like that.

09 September 2005, 08:42 PM
Hey Guys ,
Thanks for the comments.

Gunilla- the vegetation is a good idea, the castle will be surrounded by lots of trees too so that should help.
Squibbit- thanks , sometimes when I draw on paper I am looking for the Ctrl+z to undo .
mac_andre- hopefully the texture I put on later will fix this a bit.
at_626- thanks
jddog - yes , I agree . I will work on this.
yunisirees- thanks , I was thinking of using a red color for the top main roof and putting minature turrets on the corners.
Ramtin_moom,Lemog, -thanks
ar LutiK- after struggling a lot to come up with an idea for the challenge, I am having more fun now since I know what I am doing.
hhssuu,Neeno, thanks for the comments.

I am taking a break from the castle and am going to start on the mountain and trees that the castle will sit on .

09 September 2005, 08:50 PM
Nice work on the castle - looks good!

09 September 2005, 09:02 PM
Looks very good !!

Waiting for uptdates !!!

09 September 2005, 11:47 PM
Looks good so far. What do you have planned for the castle wall textures when you get back to it? Waiting to see your next update.

09 September 2005, 08:42 PM (

Well, here is my first test to create a terrain. This is just a test terrain, I was experimenting with textures for the vertical rock face. This was done in Carrara's vm , I didn't use the terrain editor . I then textured the grass and rocks with one shader . I am happy that I got some vertical and some not so vertical rockfaces happening on the main vertical rockface.
The trees were done using carrara's tree modeler and then Replicated . They are not in any great position yet just seeing how they looked against the terrains.
Let me know your comments and crits.

09 September 2005, 08:44 PM (

Sorry For the double post.

09 September 2005, 09:11 PM
• You are specially good in landscapes Mike, i know it is a test but i suggest more colors in the rocks when final textures are there, the trees in front look out of place, the others are well positioned, good advances with your image! see you in your next post!

09 September 2005, 09:15 PM
Nice landscape, like climax said you probably want to do somethin' about those scattered trees, anyways good stuff so far, I'll holla!

09 September 2005, 12:05 AM (

Hey guys,

In this update I added some color variation to the vertical rock face, changed the tree size to get a better sense of scale and added a walkway at the top edge of the ledge. I am happy with the way this looks so I will model my terrain soon, thanks for the comments about the colors.

09 September 2005, 05:01 AM
Nice terrain work you have there.... Look really detailed So wonderful.

09 September 2005, 03:54 PM (

Here is an update to my concept skecth, I hand drew the background then added the foreground elements on the computer.
Still dont know if it will be a spaceship they are looking at or a more supernatural/spaceship/light fx event or not.
I needed some characters in it and I think this adds to the image. Let me know your comments and crits

09 September 2005, 07:48 PM
Hi Mike,

I like the concept... looks more balanced now

I'm looking forward to see your wip:thumbsup:

09 September 2005, 04:19 PM (

Here is the layout of the elements in 3d,trying to get an interesting angle on the scene. I wanted the viewer to get the feeling of overlooking the valley. I added the spaceship which is from my GSO entry and placed in this scene to see how it looks, I will model a new one for this scene if I decide to go that way.
Let me know your comments and crits on this composition and camera angle.

09 September 2005, 04:33 PM
hi mmoir . cool sketch! the 3d one looks great! maybe a little fog or dof will give the image more depth!anyway its just a sketch yet!
the angle is great!

09 September 2005, 08:35 PM
Impressive concept AND modeling! This is going to be very, very good!

09 September 2005, 05:37 AM
Mike, even more grandiose then last challenge but I'd really like to remind you that you need to sleep to. Awesome work mate :thumbsup::thumbsup:

09 September 2005, 10:26 PM (

Hey all,
In this update I made the castle a little larger, did some more modeling to the vertical rock faces , added the gorge floor and river, added the distant mountains and also the waterfalls. I also cropped the image a little differently .
I think I will either start modeling the buildings for the village on the right or model the bridges.
If you have any comments or crits let me know.

09 September 2005, 11:41 PM
NIce looking stuff, I dont't notice anything as of yet, hope that you will work on that waterfall somemore, as of that is it, Until the next psot, holla!

09 September 2005, 01:47 AM
Beelow- I will work on the waterfall more, this is basically positioning the waterfall , I may add another waterfall on the other side of the first bridge.

Ar lutik- When I first heard "Spectacular" for the contest this is sort of the image I had in my head .

Cartesius- thanks for the comment

yunisirees- I did add the distant mountains and a little more haze in this last update

Yongkiat,Maxter- thanks for the comments.

See ya .

09 September 2005, 07:00 AM
I like your terrain solution a lot! Nice texture!

09 September 2005, 08:12 AM
Very nice result for the ground... impressive Mike

09 September 2005, 08:29 AM
• Damn! I love the way your lanscapes look! the far mountains really made a great diference! just put a couple of teapots there and you are done!

09 September 2005, 02:45 PM
Yeah man. Plane crasher is my favourite. (Since i crashed allot of model planes in my life ) :)

Cool concept and good luck to you.

09 September 2005, 02:50 PM
nice landscape and good constructions on it!

keep it up

09 September 2005, 03:11 PM
mmoir :) how are you old friend , I see you've done lots of work , I wish you gl this time seeya :)

09 September 2005, 04:36 PM
You are showing your neat design work here Mike. I think this will be like a sci fi book cover. Spectacular!!

09 September 2005, 07:48 PM (

Here are some low poly models with some textures on them, the buildings are middle ages time frame . These buildings are going on the right side of my image and will be quite small but I need quite a few of them. I will maybe model 10 more and then duplicate them to create the village.
Let me know if you have any comments.

09 September 2005, 03:59 PM
Your 3d layout looks already promising and I really like your landscape modeling:thumbsup: . Nothing to crit on your lowpoly models. They will make a nice little village!:)

09 September 2005, 06:26 PM (

Here is a model of the railing I plan on using in the foreground of the image. Which color do your think I should go with , I will model the posts next .

09 September 2005, 06:29 PM
Double post.

09 September 2005, 03:46 PM
Steady progress you make mate, the level of detail is indeed appropriate. Just dropped a line to cheer you on!

:buttrock:

09 September 2005, 08:18 PM (

In this update I have a more complete balcony, I am probably going to add a Stone bench and a couple of stone flower pot. The colors and textures may change but I think I am happy with the look of the balcony.
Let me know if you have comments or crits.

09 September 2005, 01:41 AM (

I have updated the balcony, I completed the railing around most of the balcony edge. I will have taller columns at the right edge of the image which I will model later.
I add the stone bench and Flower pots, a couple of edges need a little smoothing but this is generally what they will look like except I will add some flowers later.
If you have any comments or crits let me know.

09 September 2005, 06:25 AM
Beautiful updates for these interesting details Mike... :wip:

09 September 2005, 04:20 PM (

I added the balcony to the scene as well as added the village to the right . I will add more houses etc in the distance as well I have to add alot of trees to the landscape.

Let me know if you have any comments or crits.

09 September 2005, 04:36 PM
Veri nice updates, mate. Especially the last one.

09 September 2005, 05:08 PM
This looks terrific - I haven't seen it for a while but the latest updates are really smashing. I think you should do a fly trough of it later - so much nice details... Keep going like this

09 September 2005, 06:37 PM
great concept and modelling Mike. The details are fantastic :D

09 September 2005, 08:22 PM
I agree, theres so much details and great concept too:bounce:
Go on:thumbsup:

09 September 2005, 09:21 PM
Divaise,Le-Go,daWinky,keetmun,Lemog,suk-grigorij,Gunilla,Agamemnwn and Mr Micro26

09 September 2005, 09:30 PM
Nice update

Good details:thumbsup:

09 September 2005, 09:51 PM
Nice view, and greate concept. You have interesting detail on balcony.

09 September 2005, 01:56 AM
 Texturing looks amazing. Great detail on the balcony fence. The stone pots and bench look real. I dig the craft aswell. Excellent modeling my freind.

what about adding some people on the bridge on the left, maybe on a horse caridge. oblivious to whats going on.

09 September 2005, 04:43 AM
Wow Mike, my jaw just fell was online to much lately decided to check your thread and bang!
my jaw it my desk.

Awesome work!!!

09 September 2005, 04:49 AM
real nice, dude

09 September 2005, 05:48 AM
Veeery nice texturing man! i loved!
i will be waching here

c ya

09 September 2005, 06:17 AM
Very spectacular... I'm imagine me in your environment... and the impressive feeling... really good Mike

09 September 2005, 07:52 AM
hi mmoir .. the scene looks awesome now man! everythings come together! hmm the shadow that the alien ship casts is a bit harsh for me on the cliff takes away the details!what do u say man?

09 September 2005, 09:44 AM
very nice.. very epic appearnce to it.. i look fortward to seeing this huge

09 September 2005, 11:31 AM
Your last update looks already spectacular, great environment:thumbsup: . I agree with yunisirees - the shadows are a little hard.

09 September 2005, 01:16 PM
Good job on the balcony scene concept, that's the one I'd go with. I like the composition and the sense of depth and space makes it visiually impressive. Great stuff, keep it up. Alexi.

09 September 2005, 11:01 PM
Nice beautiful enviorment man, man you're having a quick start... i can't wait to get going too~ your entry is looking very soild, can't wait to see more:)

09 September 2005, 12:41 PM
Maxter, andreja,ar LutiK,Squibbit,LAURO_MX,Lemog,stripe,daWinky- WOw , thanks for all the comments .

P&P- Thanks for the comments , yes I was going to add some people on the bridge.

yunisirees,- Thanks for the comments, I agree the ships shadow is to harsh, I will fix this.

daWinky- I agree with the shadow comment too.

alexichabane- Yes , I am going with the balcony in the scene.

hhssuu- thanks , and good luck getting your entry started.

I have been working on the large bridge model and will post an update soon.

09 September 2005, 02:52 PM (

Here is the start to the bridge model , don't want to go to far in case I have to make changes. This has a texture map I created mixed in with a modified image of some concrete using a Turbulence mixer. Still need to tweak the texture a bit.
I think I will complete the bridge with this design , I am trying to add a way for people to get from the top tier to the bottom tier . Should I add stairs or an elevator type gondola, any ideas on this would be helpful.

09 September 2005, 02:55 PM
A darn double post again, Sorry.

09 September 2005, 09:30 PM
For me some winding stairs would fit in there quite good. Nice update:) .

09 September 2005, 10:29 PM (

I am almost done the bridge, I may add some extra detail and am still thinking about the stairs/elevator issue.

Here is a close up render of the bridge and the inset picture is the whole bridge done using low quality render settings.

Now I just have to place them in the scene, let me know if you have any comments.

09 September 2005, 10:47 PM
Great progress!

looking realy impresive.

09 September 2005, 05:31 AM
Superbe Mike

09 September 2005, 06:04 AM
hei mmoir
cool! the bridge is nice! carry on the fun man!
hehe when i see the bridge i think of stairs man! :) could add to the complexity !

09 September 2005, 06:32 AM
the scene becomes bigger and bigger. great progress...

09 September 2005, 07:38 PM (

In this update I added the new bridges to the scene and also I have added the fluted column in the foreground on the right.
It is hard to see but I have shown a couple farmers fields behind the village.
I may start modeling the people and horses to place on the bridge and roads to help get a sense of scale.

09 September 2005, 09:25 PM
very nice idea, and i like alot the perspective, and the panoramic is very cool...good work:thumbsup:

09 September 2005, 10:20 PM
Wow, this is really spectacular. I waiting to see more.Congrats

09 September 2005, 11:18 PM

I like how it is coming along.

To me, some of your objects look flat and some do not. maybe it is just me.

Keep working at it.

09 September 2005, 11:53 PM
I love the perspective view and the details of the mountains. Keep the good work.

09 September 2005, 12:16 AM
• Every time better and better Mike! i love the lanscape, but there is a lack of color, maybe some colored trees will make it even better, lighting is great though the ship is too dark, keep it up! u r doing great!!

09 September 2005, 12:19 PM
melkao,denverbz,banzato- thanks for the nice words

Agent_Orange- which objects look flat to you , is it in the final scene or one of the object shots.

Climax- Thanks for the comments, I was going to add more fields to the land (field of wheat) which should add color . I was also going to add a variety of tree colors to the scene which hopefully will help. The ship is not the final one , this one is from my GSO entry so I have to model another one which will fit this scene better.

09 September 2005, 12:25 PM
It very much интерестно!
Beautiful landscape!

09 September 2005, 12:47 PM
The bridge fits in there perfectly. I enjoy to watch the progress in your scene!:)

10 October 2005, 05:28 PM (

Hey ,

Here is a low poly model of a horse, I didn't spend too much time on it as none of the horses in the scene are going to be too big. The inset image of the horse is probably twice as large as any horse will be in my image so I think the quality is good enough.
I did a quick uv map of the horse and then painted the texture map which is blended with a procedural shader. I will create a bunch of horses from this model.
Let me know what you think.

10 October 2005, 12:12 AM
hei mmoir

hmmm yess the model looks good at small sizes.. ur going to make different textures for the bunch of them right? then i think it will do great man!

10 October 2005, 12:25 AM

Sergey Banityuk,DaWinky - Thanks for the comments

yunisirees- yes, I plan to use different texture maps on the different horses.

10 October 2005, 10:21 AM
Your horse looks pretty nice and I think it will work good to add some details to your landscape.

10 October 2005, 10:38 AM
Nice low horse Mike... a real Percheron ? nice detail for your scene my friend

10 October 2005, 04:39 PM
looking good man, love the bridge.

10 October 2005, 09:11 PM
Hey there, great looking concept and implementation! I love the details, great looking scenery!

10 October 2005, 01:48 PM
Hey guys ,

Thanks for the comments , I haven't been able to spend much time on my entry lately . Hopefully I will be able to get back to work on my image soon.

10 October 2005, 09:33 PM (

Well, here is my first update in a long while I took a break from this for a while. Actually I modelled the wagon a week or so ago but didn't post it . This is still not going to be that prominent in the final so the missing reigns shouldn't be noticeable.
Let me know your comments and crits

10 October 2005, 11:09 PM
Nice modeling and textures. I would say that the horse's neck and face are too wide though.

10 October 2005, 11:56 PM
Nice modeling and textures. I would say that the horse's neck and face are too wide though.

i'm agree, and i think that te horse still needs some work in the textures...the rest is ok:thumbsup:

10 October 2005, 02:47 AM
Dude those are pretty nice updates! Since they're gonna be a bit far off I guess they should be ok, really depends on the actual distance, so you'll prob have to just put it in the final comp to see.

Cheers mate!

10 October 2005, 03:19 AM
Nice job!!! I like modeling & texturing!!!

10 October 2005, 09:02 AM
Hey Mike,
That's a pretty nice horse and wagon I think! And the detailing should be more than enough for the size in the scene. Really looking forward to see this huge scene come together!

10 October 2005, 09:34 AM
Wow! you had so many concepts! Glad u have picked a nice one and very nice work so far. Good luck for the challenge.

10 October 2005, 01:59 AM
Hi Mike, you have been a great work in this scene, i liked the models. Also good work with the textures, i'm waiting to see more. Keep going mate

10 October 2005, 02:01 PM
hiya mmoir
long time man! but nice modeling and texturing mate for somthing thats seen from afar!:bounce:
cheers! waiting for some more man!:)

10 October 2005, 09:43 AM
Hey Mike,
nice that you are back with an update! I like your horse and wagon:thumbsup: . As mentioned before I agree that from a distance it will work very good in your scene:) . Hope to see more soon!

10 October 2005, 06:34 PM
Hey Mike, Sweet updates happening. Nice mood in the render

10 October 2005, 11:05 PM
hey man your adding nice detail in the textures, keep it up man!

10 October 2005, 02:09 PM
Hey great looking wagon you got there! Just out of curiosity what is the poly count for the horse and wagon? Keep up the great work! :buttrock:

10 October 2005, 12:46 AM (

Well, I have started some modelling again. I usually model everything in Carrara studio , but I modelled this in Hexagon 1.2 . I like the new symmetrical modeling feature it has.
This is the base head which I will use for both of the foreground characters. I have to add the ears but I think the proportions are okay so far.
Let me know your comments and crits.

10 October 2005, 12:59 AM
Thanks for all the comments,
mmbenya- the horse and wagon/barrels etc in my last post was 29,000 polys.
hhssuu,Digital_Rebellion,daWinky,yunisirees,denverbz,MD.Tangir,BobbEr- Thanks for the comments.
Gunilla,keetmun-I think the detailing should be enough too for the size in the final image.
melkao,gardogg- I may tweak it later , thanks for the crits.

10 October 2005, 02:01 AM
Wow. What an amazing scene. Your attention to detail and quality in all the individual elements is great. I think that your choice of subject and the scene is a really smart decision and obviously plays to your strengths. I can't wait to see this little world fully realized and rendered. I've always been a fan of images that take us someplace that never existed until the artist created their image :)

10 October 2005, 04:03 PM (

Here is the model of the monk's body , not really defined I just wanted correct proportions . I still have to do finish the hands but I will do this later . I want to get started on the robe.
Let me know your comments and crits.

10 October 2005, 06:53 PM
I really like the peaceful expression in his face! Well done
Looking forward to see that robe.

10 October 2005, 11:01 PM
Nice body model man, you seem to be producing so many nice piece to go in the scene, it's definatly gonna be a rich environment, keep it up

10 October 2005, 03:31 AM
Hi Mike, really good progress!! :bounce:

I love all the details

10 October 2005, 03:44 AM
Goof start for the body Mike... just enlarge hips and the thighs and that will be very good... much more detailed is certainly not necessary if he have clothes...

10 October 2005, 03:29 PM
Hi Mike. Been away from this challenge for some time so am really impressed with your pic so far. Great stuff!

10 October 2005, 01:15 AM (

Not much of an update , finding it hard to work on my contest entry. I just roughed in the robe and have to add the folds and hood. He should have sandals too.
If you have any comments or crits let me know.

11 November 2005, 10:22 PM (

Working on this contest is very difficult for me right now, but here is a small update. I add the sandals, hair, finished the hands and added some work on the robe. Still need to add some thickness to the robe , I will texture the character next.
Any comments or crits let me know.

11 November 2005, 07:09 AM
Your monk model is looking good now:) , I hope you find soon the time for some more work on your scene!

11 November 2005, 03:34 PM (

Here is just my scene so far with a quick 2d sketch of the alien ship composited into the scene . Trying to get a feel for the shape of the ship .

What do you think , does the ship fit. I wanted a ship that looks like it could be menacing and peaceful at the same time.

11 November 2005, 05:36 PM
Them guys lookin good. As for the scetch, I don't think it fits well. the other one you had was a better shape, maybe round it out more. this current scetch seems too busy of a design but that does keep things interesting in the final shot. I don't know, maybe its just me but i like it and i don't, I say try another scetch. I see something like what you had before but cross it with a jellyfish.

11 November 2005, 12:23 AM
Hey Matt,

Thanks for the comments, I know what you mean . I like and don't like the sketch of the ship, I will think about the ship design as I model other stuff and hopefully something else pops into my head.

11 November 2005, 10:19 AM
Hi there mate!
Great work so far.. I agree that this ship is a bit too busy. I think that some longer and rounded design could be better here...
and make this river before it falls down the cliff more visible, because now it looks like it started just before the waterfall.

good luck and wating for more!

11 November 2005, 04:10 PM
The environment is looking great! When I think of a ship for this, I definitely think of something very different from what you have... Something much rounder, elongated and filling the empty space a bit to the left and down from where you have your ship now. Probably larger, too!

11 November 2005, 06:10 AM
Hi Mike, though I don't know how a spaceship crossed with a jellyfish might look:scream: , I agree with P&P (and the others) about your sketch. I also liked more the previous version, something more rounded...But the landscape already looks so nice...:) . I'm looking forward to see more!:bounce:

11 November 2005, 07:48 AM
Personaly... I love a lot this one... very good design and very contrast in your composition... It just need to be more close and more giant... to finish to be spectacular and impressive...

:applause: :bounce: :applause: really better than the first one...

11 November 2005, 06:11 PM
Great progress Mike, your scene looks fantastic:thumbsup:

i agree... first concept is better:beer:

11 November 2005, 02:16 PM (

I am looking for some input on which ship design you think best suits my image. I am going to pick from one of these 2 or the one in my previous post.
Any input would be appreciated.

11 November 2005, 02:41 PM
Not an easy choice... I personnaly like the design for the first one- it's well propartioned and have a good harmony. On the other hand a more "stretched" and less round shape maybe fits better in your scene?

Both could probably work well - but my vote still goes for number 1

11 November 2005, 02:43 PM
Surely the number "1" mate... without doubt :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

11 November 2005, 07:56 PM (

Here is a model of the house that will be in the foreground, you will see this house from the top in the final image sort of like this image. This house will be surrounded by trees so I am not that concerned with the sparse looking walls.
I was thinking of adding some sort of Gutters, downspouts and a rain barrel . Do you think they had this in the middle ages?
Let me know your comments or crits.

11 November 2005, 09:51 PM
Hi Mike,

I go with Lemog: No doubt, the first space ship will fit much better than the others in your scene!
The house is good, I agree about the walls, why more work than necessary...

I was thinking of adding some sort of Gutters, downspouts and a rain barrel . Do you think they had this in the middle ages?

I'm not sure if they had downpouts, don't no what gutters are( gates?), but rain barrels are a good idea I think...:)

11 November 2005, 10:05 PM (

Just an update of the house with displacement map on the walls. I think it is better this way.

11 November 2005, 10:11 PM
Thanks everyone for the comments.

Dawinky, by gutters I mean the eavestrough that go on the fascia boards and thanks for the comments .

11 November 2005, 01:10 PM (

Here is the house with the displacement on the walls fixed as well I added the shed to the side. This is better than the previous one I think so I am done with this for now.

11 November 2005, 04:45 PM (

I have added a bunch of low poly people and the wagons on the bridge. I may add some more but this event has just happened so I don't think there would be that many people there.
Let me know your comments.

11 November 2005, 05:25 PM
Simply great

11 November 2005, 05:38 PM
Wow - it looks huge - you got a great sense of scale in there now. Amazing amount of details, great work!

11 November 2005, 05:39 PM
Really nice work Mike! I love the concept and the execution of the environment :)

11 November 2005, 06:45 PM
wow man thats great....your nivel of realism is fantastic:drool:

11 November 2005, 08:40 PM
Wow, great scene and details, amazing. Congrats

11 November 2005, 04:18 AM (

Here is the Monk model textured , I hand painted the textures . You will only see this character from the back/side . I will build the older monk from this model.
Let me know your comments.

11 November 2005, 04:24 AM
hiya mmoir
been a while since i lasted checked! but wow cool updates man! very detailed!:thumbsup:
hmm could improve the folds on the monks cloths ... but still looks great!
cheers man!

11 November 2005, 04:30 AM
yunisirees, I don't know what is the best way but I was going to add the folds after I pose him. Don't know yet if I am going to rig the character or just move/rotate etc.

11 November 2005, 05:57 AM (

Here is the Monk posed after I rigged the character, I added some fold at the bottom of the robe. I also added the bible falling from his hands .

Let me know your comments or crits.

11 November 2005, 07:39 AM mysterious of topic , good concept at once

best regard

11 November 2005, 04:55 AM (

I placed the monks in the scene, the one monk should be rotated more. Also the house is placed in the foreground too.
I will work on the sky next, if you have any comments or crits let me know.

11 November 2005, 06:34 AM
Hi Mike,
your scene is coming along very crits on the visible parts:) - the house is placed well and you already mentioned to rotate the left monk a little...everything looks amazing:thumbsup: ...I'm curious now to see the sky and the ship...

11 November 2005, 09:39 PM
nice enviorment mano just dont let ya man jump into the vally.coz if they do they wont be seen in the message( in the making of this picture nobody was hurt).just kiddin.nice job all the best

11 November 2005, 01:36 AM (

I have added the sky to my image and the start of my alien ship, the lighting in general needs to be fixed up but this is my first attempt at a sky concept.
I used Carrara studio 5's new Volumetric clouds to create this entire sky with no postwork, I am very happy with the skies C5 can produce. I am building my scene in C4 so I created the sky in C5 and then used a jpeg of the sky as a backdrop in C4 .
Let me know if you have any comments or crits.

11 November 2005, 09:13 AM
Hi, Mike, i think your image needs a little bit of colour saturation (personal sugestion), and a good idea is in the table (marked with a red point) put a chess (for example).

Great image, and good luck

PS: I attach you your image with the color idea (

11 November 2005, 02:20 PM
Great job on your image! I've been trying for a similar effect (with cliff and moss textures), but with far less beautiful results. All of your elements are blending together quite well, and the lighting is great. The only thing I'd suggest is a bit less lens flare. Alexi.

11 November 2005, 02:38 PM
Gunilla,Pjanssen,melkao,denverbz- thanks for the comments
yunisirees- I did improve the folds of the clothes hopefully.
kreuz,daWinky- thanks.
immortalx- I actually thought of having people jumping off the bridges , thanks for the comments
ilusiondigital- I do have to improve the lighting (brighter in general), I was thinking of putting something on the bench but didn't know what , the chess board is a good idea. I was also thinking of putting some sort of light exactly where you put the lens flare on my image.
alexichabane-Thanks, I was thinking of some sort of lens flare too.

11 November 2005, 03:57 PM
Well, hope you like the ideas, and waiting updates, friend

11 November 2005, 06:48 PM
excellent textures and illumination...the escene is getting really spectacular:p

11 November 2005, 08:45 PM
The sense of scale on this is fantastic. It invites your eye on a journey that seems endless. You can also feel the scale of time - from the geologic ages that carved the canyon to the civilization that devoted centuries to building the bridges to the simple chess board awaiting a move.Definitely spectacular.

11 November 2005, 10:59 PM (

I have updated the lighting a little although now the sky needs to be a bit brighter. I also added the flowers in the foreground.
Next I will do all the trees on the landscape.

11 November 2005, 12:58 AM
I thought that was a photo:eek:. Amazing, mate. You have been a great work with the light, keep going. Congrats :applause:

11 November 2005, 11:59 AM (

In this update I have added the first bunch of trees to the gorge as well I fixed the pose of the characters as I was having problems with the charachters keeping there original pose once bringing them into the scene.
Looking for some comments or crits on the trees if possible,do they fit the scene well?

11 November 2005, 04:36 PM
Wow a ton of great work you have done here. Very impressive.

I like the crispness of the shadows on the foreground figures, but perhaps the shadow being cast from the spaceship should be softer, since that area is way across the canyon? hmm I am not sure, but I guess it is debateable.

11 November 2005, 04:43 PM
You don't need something really burned... but if I judge with your style of shadow... especially visible with the alien ship... you must have a lighting more contrasted... that can increase a lot the readibility of your picture yet fantastic... to go to the spectacular...
...that comes good Mike, keep your hand on mate

11 November 2005, 02:36 PM (

I have added more trees on the right side of the image and changed the lighting a bit more. The sky still needs to be brighter but I am getting closer .
Are the trees on the right too big, I am thinking a little smaller but I sortof like it this way . I now have to add the trees on the left and then the ones on the distant mountains.

Any thoughts or crits would be appreciated.

11 November 2005, 02:49 PM
Hey Mike!

The trees that you added made a huge difference. I agree with you that the sun should be brighter. illusiondigital's idea for contrast and color saturation is good but that lens flare... noooo, imo looks cheesy.

11 November 2005, 03:42 PM
Wow, Mike, your scene is really growing to something spectacular now:thumbsup: . The added trees are bringing additional life in here, but maybe they are a little too big on the right side? I agree, that a little more contrast would make the scene more readable. Good luck with your last adjustments!:)

11 November 2005, 03:51 PM
hey mmoir.... thats a lot of work! really amazing:thumbsup:

11 November 2005, 04:28 PM
Exc. Ups!

Nice work!

11 November 2005, 04:44 PM
You have a great entry here!

How about showing a little bit of the horizont? I think that would give it a little system. You don´t really have a focal point in this image. (I don´t know where to look first.)
Great execution and nice colors. I also love the architecture that is going on. Keep it up!

peace, pete

11 November 2005, 06:17 PM (

Here is a low res raytraced image of the scene with all the trees so far. I added some brightness in post to the image as some suggested. I will add the trees in the foreground and on the distant mountains next.
Then I need to finish the alien ship, let me know if you have any comments or crits.

11 November 2005, 06:33 PM
very nice render and you success in give a sense of huge scale to the scene! do you plan to add something to the flying ship?

11 November 2005, 06:33 PM
Hey Guys ,

Thanks for the comments .

Pete, maybe you didn't see my full image, I have a horizon line in my image and the alien ship would be the focal point of the image. Thanks for the comments
Luks,melkao,glenn23, thanks for the comments .
daWinky, I think I will shrink a few of the taller trees and the contrast idea is a good one. Thanks.
SNoWs, Thanks for the comments , I was going to be adding some sort of lights at the front of the ship , not a lens flare , I didn't mean that in my previous post. I was thinking of having some sort of static electrical discharge at the rear of the ship too.
Lemog- thanks for the comments , I am going to try and make the image brighter
soapy, the alien ships shadow should be softer in the final image.

11 November 2005, 06:52 PM
Actually I think I prefer it without so many trees. Especially the ridge on the left. You had that ancient feeling that seems a little diminished now. (What was the name of that village on the mound where Theodon lived in "lord of the Rings"?)
Sounds like a great idea to enhance the spaceship with some kind of lights. They remind me a little bit of Douglas Adams description of the Vogon ships in Hitchhikers Guide. "The spaceships hung in the sky like bricks don't"

Still one of my favorite images though. Good luck on the end run!

11 November 2005, 07:54 PM
Glenn,- I shrunk the trees on the right side a bit and I will remove some of the trees on the left. I have to find a happy median, I don't want it to look sparse but natural . Thanks for the commments.
I have seen Lord of the rings but am not a huge fan so I don't know the name of it.

Monsitj- I plan on adding to the alien ship , don't know if I am going to model it like my sketch or not.... Thanks for the comments.

11 November 2005, 10:48 PM (

I have added the trees to the distant mountains as well as the impression of sprawling city . I used Carrara 5's new replicator tools to do these trees. I used Replica for all the other trees.
I also brightened the image in post , maybe to much , it is hard to tell with having the rest of the image there to compare against. I will render the background as a separate layer.
Let me know if you have any comments or crits.

11 November 2005, 01:52 PM (

I have combined the background and foreground layers in this image. I also changed the 3d lighting in the image to be brighter than before. I have to render out the middleground image next but I have to finish of the alien ship model.
Any comments or crits appreciated.

11 November 2005, 06:06 PM (

Here is were I am headed with the ship model. I just added stuff in my 2d app to add some more interest to the ship.
Hopefully I will have an update with the model shortly .

11 November 2005, 01:49 PM (

Well, here is the alien ship modeled and textured . I may add a bit to the textures , like some reflection and change the lettering on the ship.
I was after a ship that looked organic but mechanical at the same time . Now I can concentrate on rendering out the middle ground layer of my composition.
Let me know if you have any comments or crits.

12 December 2005, 02:35 PM
woula... :wip: waiting for an up-date here...

12 December 2005, 03:06 PM
wonderful panoramic, and beautiful:scream:

12 December 2005, 03:33 PM (

Well ,here is my image with all the layers composited together. I have a foreground ,middle ground, background and haze layer.
I have yet to add some postwork or another layer for the mist in the gorge and maybe a flock of birds flying about. Also,I am going to add some lighting effects to the ship .
Let me know if you have any comments or crits.

12 December 2005, 04:10 PM
eventually just a little bit more contrast with some more vivid color... but is really a personal feeling... wow very nice view and result !

12 December 2005, 04:23 PM
Wow Mike - this is really an impressive scenery now, great work!
Only thing I notice is that the objects, especially the ship, seems a bit to evenly lit. The shadows they cast is hardly noticeable on the things. Maybe make your main light more intense and reduce the ambience would be good - other than that, I have no comments just some drooling
Good luck for the final tweaks!

12 December 2005, 04:26 PM
hey man thats really cool , i think that the work in the textures is very nice, also the illumination is just the you know a very cool tutorial to texture mountains like yours and how to get that illumination?

12 December 2005, 04:31 PM
Jjdog- yes I would like a little more vivid color too, when I did the middle ground layer I chickened out and reduced the brightness a bit . I will try something to increase the vivid colors a bit.

Gunilla- yes I was planning on adding a bit more contrast lighting to the ship , as far as the shadow it casts I think it is just the angle of the ship and its shape with respect to the sun that make the shadow smaller than you would think. I will try and do something about this too. Thanks.

12 December 2005, 04:40 PM
Hey Melkao,

Thanks for the comments , as far as textures they are just blending of several textures together . so they are procedural. I have difficulty with lighting stuff but I am working on it so I am glad you like it. It is rendered with Carrara's Skylite rendering which is like a lightdome , also carrara uses a terrain bump shader which worked well here for the terrains.

12 December 2005, 04:51 PM
Hey Carlos,

I am not familiar with Maya,Lightwave or 3dsmax but I am sure they would have the same thing.
In the color channel or difuse channel I would place 2 stone texture maps and then use a "blender" function to mix the 2 together . I would also place these same textures in the terrain bump channel so they match the color channel.

Hope this helps a bit.

12 December 2005, 04:53 PM
Ey man
Last time I saw your thread was like a month ago. I see you came a LONG way since

but I gotta tell ya, your forground really gets "swallowed" in the midground !
really man ! its hard to make a focal point that way. U gotta do one of the following to get more depth -

different lighting / contrast levels

I'd go with either the second or the third in your case.
I think some more fogging could really really add depth to your scene.
since you got everything layered up in PS this shouldnt be a problam. just play with it.
I hope to see an update on this !
really nice work besides that:bounce:

12 December 2005, 05:02 PM

Thanks for the comments, this is the first time I have rendered in layers so I can now I can play with things like fog and lighting to the middle ground layer. I will probably do a bit of both of fog and contrast , I will try and emphasize some more depth throughout the image.

12 December 2005, 05:23 PM
Looking good so far... sure that they are gonna look great at the finishline...:buttrock:

12 December 2005, 05:23 PM
Looks already like a final image

Good luck in the last steps :bounce:

12 December 2005, 04:52 AM (

Well, here is a possible final image . I tried to emphasize some depth in the image from foreground to background by adding the fog to the gorge. Adjusted the contrast a bit too to the middle ground layer.
I also added some lighting to the ship,if I can do a convincing static electricity I will add that later.
Let me know if you have any comments or crits.

12 December 2005, 05:08 AM
• Great Mike I love it! no matter what chances you do to your final it will look amazing, so Go man, The time is running out!

12 December 2005, 09:26 AM
i like your work but i think its too"flat" some diference of distance you have make. little fog ?

12 December 2005, 11:55 AM
ey man
congrats !
this is alot bettr allready !

I'de say dont be afraid to saturate the front a bit more and de-saturate (and slightly de-contrast) the mid ground and especially the backround (which would have much more depth the more u do this).
I'd play with the levels\color balance some more too.

anyways this is good enaugh allready to me !
once again congrats

12 December 2005, 02:03 PM
Hey Guys,

Thanks for the comments .

Zman- thank for the tips , you are right I was going to saturate the front but I didn't as I thought it would be too much. I will try out your suggestions

12 December 2005, 02:17 PM
Looks good

At final stages the most importent is to leave the image for few hours, don`t think about it and go back... that gives a fresh approach when you see the things which works well and those which wors bad.

Good luck :bounce:

12 December 2005, 04:04 PM (

Well, here is the final image. I saturated the foreground and desaturated the mid and backgrounds . I added a couple of bird layers but they are barely visible in the smaller renders.
I think the image isn't quite as flat as it was before. I learned quite a bit about working in layers in this contest and it definitely has its advantages in postwork.
I will post my story that goest with the image in a bit.
Thanks to all who visited and commented on my thread throughout the contest , it is appreciated.
Good luck to all the contestants.

12 December 2005, 04:14 PM
Congrats very impressive. Such a beautiful enviroment you have created...and quite a spectacular way to disturb someones chees match -cheers

12 December 2005, 02:12 AM (

Here is my final image with the story line , my image is Titled , It's your move. Hopefully the story is understandable as I am the farthest thing from a writer. Thanks to all who stopped by my thread and good luck to all.

It was a bright and sunny day when it came, some people couldn’t see how dark it really was , they seemed to be mesmerized by it’s lights and massive size. This spectacular mechanical bird brought with it ideas that were intended to destroy our spectacular ancient civilization and its beliefs. They wanted all peoples to be their subjects , they had a game plan, a strategy to replace our rightful King, this was there first move to show themselves in such an impressive way..

In response , many people were awestruck with there opening move and were frozen, they couldn’t see a move ahead and their King would be thrown down in time with there full consent. However, many people recognized there devious intent and walked away from this spectacle and after contemplation and thought made the correct move and there rightful King still stands.

We are all pawns for the taking in this game of there’s but if we make the right moves we will remain standing with the true king in his Spectacular Kingdom.
