Latest Update: Coloring WIP: Horn
09 September 2005, 02:34 AM
Hello, this is my first time entering a challenge. I hope I'll learn a lot from everyone! :)
The topic confused me a little, so I hope this pic theme is okay.
I always loved ancient myths so I tried making my own.
The dark knight cuts off the horn of the unicorn man, releasing its life energy into the lands. Birds, leaves, flowers, and butterflies fly from the wound, turning the soil from decay into a grand forest.

That piece sounds wonderful! It is full of action and exitment. Although I can't say it is the most grandiose theme so far, it is a gorgeous idea. The layout seems pretty well done as well. Good luck!

Ooh, nice so far!! Check out the painter Zubaran, (http://san-francesco.org/postcard/cards/sfranciszurbaran.jpg) I think you'd like his figurative stylization and lighting approach.
Good luck! :)

A lovely concept and I am looking forward to seeing this image progress. Good luck with the challenge. :)

Woohoo! Thanks for the comments guys.
Yeah I was also thinking it wasn't grandiose enough (I'm seeing pictures of the end of the world and stuff out there :)), but hopefully I can do something with the effects rather than zooming out to give a shock hit with the environment.
I checked out Zubaran, reminds me of one of my all time favorite artists, Caravaggio. Indeed his art is great and inspirational. Thank you!

I guess this would be my "line art" stage. Filling in the composition and basic colors.
09 September 2005, 03:32 PM
nice concept too.

Well, I guess this is the coloring stage. I'll change stuff as I go along since I'm not very good at making things solid so early - so here I go! :)
I'm trying to get a good balance with all the stuff shooting out - I want it to feel like a "gush" of energy while not being too overpowering.

very dramatic concept, almost biblical I cant explain it, cant wait to see more, good luck!
09 September 2005, 03:11 PM
Thanks teyekanik, that's exactly what I'm going for. :D
A little back story, though I'm not sure if it's well explained in the pic:
The unicorn is the source of forests, and the outside world is a dark and arid place.
The dark knight is also dark because of the bleakness of the world around him. He decides that something must be done, so he seeks out the unicorn man. The unicorn man knows that he must give to the world, so he resists his loss of his horn but understands the sacrifice that needs to be done.
I tried to make the dark knight have a face of intense determination, but have kind eyes.
The unicorn should look powerful yet powerless, half resisting yet half giving in.
I never drew anything like this before, so it's fun. I'm glad I joined this challenge! :)

I have to agree with Teye here, you do have a biblical style and it's not that common any more. I know a few people that paint lke this but only a handful, which is very good. I wish you the best in the challenge and will definitely check back for more updates.

WOW! This is one of my favourite images of the contest! The story behind it is rather wonderful too, and if the finished article ends up anything like your avatar, then I'll be one happy bunny! Best of luck with this!

too true - I love your invented mythology as much as your image, very painterly style and process - please, please update regularly so we can all chart in intricate detail; how your mind plops onto the screen*
*(hmm - possibly not the most delicate way of putting it, but still....)

Beautiful as is. Nice in the extreme.
09 September 2005, 12:36 PM
wow you move fast.. liek the idea.. and it looks really good.

Hey guys, thanks for your comments!
I'm quick up to this point, and this is where I slow to a crawl... whenever I start putting in the details the image just becomes so flat and loses its color.
That's what I'm doing right now, so I'll post the image after my first round of detail crunching. :) Probably a week from now.
Again, thanks for your comments! Very encouraging! :bounce:

Yes. It looks biblical, and dramatic. Really spectacular. Good luck ;)

The very interesting story! The very convincing characters! And I have only one remark about the yellow bird in the foreground. It seems to me that she cuts the character in half, maybe to try to turn her? Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the comments!
Ah, that's true. I'm not too sure what I should do, since I don't want it to be looking left like the other birds, and looking right will be strange I think. Anyway, I'll try something. :)
Thanks for the critique!
Argh, I can't find time to work on this too much right now, it's frustrating!

coooolllll..i really like the concept...it frightens me..good luck

Nice entry, nice image, nice colors and nice composition
And good atmosphere.
Faces expressions very sensitively rendered !
Not totaly conviced by the front plane bird, i find it little distractive :(
The eye do go at the center part of image but this bird is taking too much attention me think.
Not sure, maybe by displacing him more on the right corner, following left thigh direction line? (with wings braking it)
anyhow, waiting for next update :)
10 October 2005, 07:43 PM
hey, interesting theme, could be epic... keep it up!
10 October 2005, 12:19 AM
I like the concept! But I have a little opinion to make. I my head, it should be the dark knight who keeps life energy within' him. Black equal bad for me and white=good. It is only my personnal way too see good and vilains you know, so keep on with your personnal taste.
Your idea is great and so imaginative, so keep on your good work! =0)
