What would happen if H.P Lovecraft was right ? Is Earth enough to handle the Old Ones' power ? Fear, hatred, madness, distress and insanity will show up, but when ?

Front / Right view of the Great Cthulhu.
I freely took as a starting point the various references of Cthulhu on the web, I will work hard on his face detail.

i dont know H.P Lovecraft but from what i got that's one of the only Spectacular Ideas that i'v seen, including mine:scream: :applause:

09-11-2005, 03:06 PM
As a big fan of H.P Lovecraft I`m subscribing to your thread and wishing you good luck

Have nice... nightmares :D

09-11-2005, 03:37 PM
First of all, let me say that you have some very impressive and POWERFUL sketching abilities. The sketches are not very clear to me in terms of what is going on though, but from the looks of things it appears that you've got a big wave approaching a hillside with a church on it an in the wave is a giant octopus? Is this some kind of storm or tsunami wave? Is the octopus just washed up in the wave, or did he summon it and is riding it so that he can get washed up on shore and eat some people?

Sorry but I just need to hear some more narrative I guess. What is going on?

The idea looks VERY cool. I just want you to clear up a little what is the message behind these sketches. A little history about your squid would be nice too. What is he known for? Is he mean or nice? Is this town under threat?

I'm working on the Splines Network, using 3dsmax.

-> 3rd user : just check 'Cthulhu' on google, you will see what H.P Lovecraft has done (He was a writter from end nineteenth century to the first twentieth century half part)
Thank you for your support. :)

-> Nomad : I wish I will NOT have such nightmares, lol ! Brrrrr...I have "goose flesh" ! ;)

-> Gardogg : thank you very much.
Indeed, Cthulhu (the name of the big octopus monster) is merging from the ocean and, as you see, he's not a small piece...rising like this from depth makes a big twist into the water, generating some tsunami effect.
Others elements need to be fixed : I still do not know if it would be interesting to put some fanatics, who are running away from the tsunami (putting theses littles jokes into the scene, for example...)
What I'm sure is : Cthulhu has awaken from the ocean and he definitely wants to go somewhere (Well, I do not know where) I still have to add more story elements..
Thanks again for your interest !

-> Tee Double U : Yeah, something like that. Advice : If you see something like that, You gotta run (and pray a lot), for sure ! ;)

Good luck. Can't wait too see the updates.

Right now, I am skinning the Bust.

I'll make a standard pose and then, compile and finalise it before exportation.

Thanks for all the comments, I hope you'll enjoy this Lovecraft dedicated WIP. :)

10-03-2005, 02:32 AM
why do you need IKs for still image? i think, FK or spline controllers would give a far better control over individual bones, especially in such a long chains.

10-03-2005, 07:43 AM
That's a good question...Indeed I did not think about that, doing my setup like a robot.
Anyway you re right, I ll try something better.

10-03-2005, 07:52 AM
Great job, JC ! Can't wait to see your work on Zbrush... :bounce:

10-04-2005, 08:03 AM
Thank you gpepper. :)

For the moment, I'm still working on the skin, I removed the useless bones and use now splineIK.
About Zbrush, I already tested some displace using mental ray, into max...But I won't post it now. (It's horribly slow to render, indeed.)

10-04-2005, 07:48 PM
wow...that's going great...i wonder why i havent seen your thread for a while...anyway i'm it's stunning...Keep it up:thumbsup: and good luck

A fast render with mental ray, without SSS.

Still a lot to do, hands are not done yet, I tried to work a little on the lighting, giving a more critical effect on the scene.

Posing almost done, next I adjust the uvs and make the displace map on Zbrush.

From now, I'm working with Zbrush.
Rendering with Mental Ray in max7.

Map need to be fixed, I think there's quite too much displace on the face.

Claw's displace is just a bad test, I'll change it.

Blacks zones on the map are not done yet.
Still working on the displacement map.
I added a fast shader & diffuse map to give an idea of the skin (just an idea ;)!)

Lighting is not the real scene one, just some test.

10-12-2005, 05:19 AM
Thanks for the big version... easyer to appreciate your work... just one remark... the blue color is perhaps to uniform... that not permit us to distinguish each parts distinct of the monster.

10-12-2005, 07:15 AM
ça le fait bien ! continue !

10-12-2005, 08:31 AM
Great character. like the head. Just be careful to make the head visible and readable because the color are too near I think.
But I 'll wait for render.
