Wow, mine looks pretty tame compared to other entries, but I'll keep going with it anyway. The story is that the male lions have been killed off by the humans and the females have banded together to discuss the future of the pride. They are meeting with a human female to strike up a deal and see to it that no more of their number are killed off. As a show of good faith, the human woman has brought her daughter along and has come unarmed.

So I have this inability to work slowly and build up color before adding texture. Oh well, I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. The lions are from a photo reference. I still have to figure out the humans, but I'm sure it'll come together.

Looks good.
But I would suggest working on the composition a bit more before you get too far.
Slow down, we have time. Make sure that the drawing works before moving ahead.

Just my suggestion.

I agree with KOryH, adri_n. There is such a thing as moving too fast. It's a fact that the more time you take on an artwork, the more time you have on fixing the details, the better your artwork will come out in the end. Some crits: It doesnt look like the humans are going to a meeting or on a meeting with the Lionesses in my opinion. It just looks like they're having a casual walk or something. If they're on their way to a meeting, I suggest showing atleast a hint of the place that they're going. And if they're already on a meeting, then the humans must atleast be facing most of the Lionesses. And you cut out a piece of the Lioness's head at the bottom right of the picture. That would distract your viewer. Don't be afraid to drift off a bit from your references. Keep it up. I'm also new at this contest. Goodluck to us all.

Thanks for the crits. I'll work out the composition. They're supposed to be meeting at the rock in the distance, but I'll try to make it a bit more obvious.

It blows me away. I just found out about the challenge, entered it and found that people already have work up.

I like the direction you are going in for you piece, I am a big nature guy. Best of luck to you.

Yeah this is an excellent start. Nice take on the topic, not so action as most peoples instinctive response, but potentially very epic nonetheless.
You have a great sense of lighting and perspective already, so i have no doubts this is going to be a great piece.
nice work

i like the idea.ALOT. But the scene you have right now just is not doing it justice.... he humans are aay from the viewer, distancing us from them and it doesn't look lie a meeting as others have mentioned..more like a casual stroll. Try not to just take the references you have used and put them together like a jigsaw to make up a composition, but really experiment with tryign out new compositions.... maybe go deeper into the story, think of how desperate these lioness are and what motivation the human character has for going there, alone.. also the little girl does not seem even a bit shy or scared. everything seems a bit friendly. maybe the little girl can e looking at a lioness who disagrees with the peace talk and thinks it a futile course of action and has an expression like she is contemplating ripping her apart.

just a gfew ideas cos i really like the idea.. keep up the good work... colours and shading are good

I agree with W!L. Love the idea, but I think it needs some more thought... looking forward to seeing how ths turns out.
