Latest Update: Final Image: finished at last
09-07-2005, 07:53 PM
So here is my general idea, it's sort of a future-past setting with kids in old-school propellor driven air ships, high above thier cliff side town. There is going to be an ocean and some clouds beneath them, and if that isn't spectacular enough, I'll through in some lens flares and motion blur. I'd like to try a combination of cartoony charcters and realistic (but stylized) backgrounds. Hopefully it will turn out ok.
09-07-2005, 08:18 PM
I don't know... Couldn't they have a break-dancing robot sidekick?... (kidding)
More foreshortening! I mean, um, my suggestion would be more forshortening.
09-07-2005, 08:21 PM
Woops, double post.
09-07-2005, 08:21 PM
Wow! Great drawing. The concept looks to be very cool. Can't wait to see this in 3d.
Oh yea, I agree, you need more foreshortening.:D
09-07-2005, 08:51 PM
Thanks for the comment on foreshortening , chris that guy, but the characters aren't supposed to be parallel to the ground. I wanted it to look like they where doing barrel rolls or something. Maybe with vapour trials this will be more evident. I may set the second character back in space a bit, (it's gonna be 3d, so I can adjust the elements a lot for the final image). I'm going to start with ont of the plans tonight, adn on some of the buikldings for the town. Alexi.
09-07-2005, 09:44 PM
cool ... :)
waiting your modeling soon .. :)
09-08-2005, 02:17 AM
Nice sketch. The two characters remind me of Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable for some reason, hehe. No doubt the modeling will be great, but maybe play with the composition a bit more.
09-08-2005, 03:13 AM
Veyr cool sketch you have there. The view from the top makes the image looks realyl grande and spectacular.
09-08-2005, 06:28 AM
Man, you´ve got the best "jetpack" designs I´ve seen in a long while. Can they hover with those? :) Good luck with the modelling, I´m looking forward to seeing how the image turns out.
09-08-2005, 06:33 AM
Welcome! And goodluck! Love the POV and the gliders.
09-08-2005, 06:37 AM
Really nice concept - I really like the composition - very balanced and dynamic.
09-08-2005, 12:12 PM
Congatulations... fantastic concept... I like a lot your space-island-town  Few month ago, I have a similar project, but without time to do it... It's with lot of pleasure that I will following your project :applause:
09-08-2005, 12:12 PM
Here are some designs for the girl character, with a little help from by buddy brian wong (his are the good ones). I tried to keep the design simple and fairly cartoony, kind of like the characters from the incredibles, (but not in a copyright infringment, get sued by pixar sort of way.) This is the character I'm going to start with, and hopefully I'll have time for both.
09-08-2005, 12:17 PM
hi ... thats some coolest drawing not to mention the even cooler concept.. keep it up and nice work :arteest:!
09-08-2005, 12:19 PM
Wow nice characters, I liked the little girl down... shes cute, with nice design...
Good luck :)
EDIT: I liked the shoes with this sheet over her chest...
09-08-2005, 12:28 PM
o how i wish i had your drawing skillz, so nice and so clean :/
can't wait to see how it will look in 3D, good luck!
09-08-2005, 01:01 PM
really nice designs man and the concept looks lovely.it cool to see someone else designing there character before modelling lots of people just can do a doodle and fire in the modeling.
if you can get the sense of distance between them and the city ,like they are really high up then it will be spectacular good luck
09-08-2005, 01:44 PM
:) Really great Concept, look forward to this one.
09-08-2005, 01:59 PM
Nice character design. I think the head is a tad big but lookign great though.
09-08-2005, 03:05 PM
Here are some possible designs for the male character. I hope I have time to get to him. I plan to do the girl and her airplane thing first, then the town, then this guy. So if I'm running out of time I can drop him from the scene. I'm working on more detailed drawing of the planes and the city, and I'll be posting them soon to get some feed back before I start modeling.
09-08-2005, 03:09 PM
Again, great sketches! You should be in the 2D contest as well. I can't wait to see some modeling.
09-09-2005, 12:09 PM
I did some specs for the two planes and some colour tests. This one is sort of based on a generic WW2 bobmber. I've started modeling the engine components and various mechanical elements. It's a welcome change from the stuff I model at work on the "Miss Spider and the Sunny Patch Friends" show (seriously, that's what its called). Anyway, thanks for all the comments so far.
09-09-2005, 01:07 PM
Thanks for the comment on foreshortening , chris that guy, but the characters aren't supposed to be parallel to the ground. ...
Yeah, I get that. I just mean: more overlap between the characters and the city, and if you bring one character closer and overlap the second a little, it will add to the sense of virtigo.
09-09-2005, 01:45 PM
seems you start very well....good luck:thumbsup:
09-09-2005, 05:06 PM
Another technical drawing of a aircraft (I think I'll call them flightpacks). I made these sketches for modelling purposes, but I decided to ink and colour them as well, to experiment with different looks. This colour sceme, as well as many design elements, are based on a combination of world war one aircraft.
09-09-2005, 05:22 PM
I really like those flying machines concept !
let's see them in 3D now !!!
09-09-2005, 05:28 PM
I like the jetpack concepts. I also like the first color scheme a lot better. The second one just doesn't look right to me.
09-09-2005, 05:33 PM
i cant tell you how much i love this idea and the characters, i cant wait to see this develop further. deffinately my favorite entry so far!
09-09-2005, 05:43 PM
Excellent concept, the ikarus style planes. Cool:thumbsup:
09-11-2005, 01:56 AM
I've made some good progress on the first air ship, shown next to the original concept sketch. I usually start with nurbs for the smmoth and flowing sections, then convert the geometry into pollys to add details. I used some books to reference 1930's engines to give the craft a reto look. I'm not sure how these things are supposed to land, but I suppose it dosn't really matter.
09-11-2005, 06:14 AM
Looking good! Can we see some other angles and a quick render.
09-11-2005, 02:39 PM
Here are a few details from the plane model.
09-11-2005, 02:43 PM
excellent job so far! really great detailed modelling.
09-11-2005, 02:48 PM
Another view of the plane, with some close-ups on the control handle. It is a fairly typical aviation-style joystick, but I added some dials and controls on top. I'll probably have to adjust it for the size of the character, which I suppose I should have made first.
09-11-2005, 11:42 PM
superb detailed modeling! excellent work!
09-12-2005, 12:20 AM
WoW really loving this, the concept is fantastic, detail amazing keep it up.
Nice stuff Alexi! Its so clean and detailed.
Our we going to see the city soon?
09-13-2005, 02:57 PM
Some sketches of the town, which i've got fairly well planed. It is going to be stone and plaster buildings with clay-tile roves, sort of like Florance or Nuremburg, but more fantasical. Hopefully it will not end up looking too much like naboo from starwars eposode 1.
09-13-2005, 03:02 PM
A few more concept sketches of the town, including details of the courtyard and gates. I'm going to add alot of plant life (trees and ivy) to give the town a garden-city type of look.
09-13-2005, 06:27 PM
I've begun to block in the town's layout using simple cubes and cylinders. The next step is to combine some architecual elements with generic houses to create a variety of structures. These can be mixed customized buildings which will fit in particular locations. I think I'll keep it fairly low-rez, because the whole town will be seen from high above.
09-13-2005, 06:40 PM
Waow. Nice sketch, great design. The modeling is looking really good. I can't wait to see more.
09-13-2005, 07:10 PM
This is coming along very nicely, I really love what you are doing!
09-13-2005, 07:28 PM
wonderful sketch and modelling. Good luck!
09-13-2005, 07:56 PM
I really like your unique airship model  . Looking forward to more of this!
09-13-2005, 10:07 PM
This town appear very pleasant... I like that... hmmm
09-13-2005, 10:36 PM
:) Wow moving fast with this, Its looking great.
09-14-2005, 04:24 AM
Nice work on the cityscape, I like the fact that it's not built on a flat 2d grid.
09-14-2005, 07:10 PM
Your desings look awesome man. The idea is trully spectacular.
09-15-2005, 01:35 AM
Coll concept dude, i like this flying machines.
COntinue the good work, i´m watching you.
09-15-2005, 06:48 AM
Those town sketches look great, very nice style... Have a feeling this will turn out looking really sweet.
09-15-2005, 09:39 AM
Your concepts look great, the city is amazing and detailed
09-15-2005, 03:42 PM
Beatiful sketches and very accurate details on it, same for modellign part that you've made until now. Looks a very promising image full of "speed" action. Very interesting town-planning in your model, looks like some country in tuscany. Congrats and of corse good luck ! :wip:
09-16-2005, 01:20 PM
I've been working on the first character for a while now, and she's just about finished. The hair is made of nurbs, and everything else is polygons. I went for a cartoony look so everything is rounded and simplified. A bit more tweaking and then i can u.v. map the geometry and then miror it.
09-16-2005, 01:23 PM
Hey, that's a great job doing in this thread. Simple design but efficient. great point of viw. Cool concept.
I will follow your thread.
09-16-2005, 01:25 PM
Some details of the character in wireframe.
09-16-2005, 01:45 PM
the 3d version of the character looks excellent! specialy how u've done the hair .. thats hard work man! and also like how ur designing the town!
09-16-2005, 03:08 PM
Polygon structure looks very accurate
09-18-2005, 02:22 PM
Real nice stuff around here I see. Very impressed with your drawings.
09-18-2005, 03:27 PM
That's some seriously clean modeling  Don't ask me why, but I get a clear feeling that you actually know what you're doing, like all the time!
09-19-2005, 05:11 AM
Very nice design for your character
09-19-2005, 03:56 PM
Here is a screen shot of some house models for the town. I have been keeping them fairly low-rez because the town is going to be seen from way above, but I'm still throwing in some details around the doors and windows. I've purposly tweaked the vertecies to give the geomety an imperfect look and add some character. These units will be combined and altered to create more variety.
09-19-2005, 03:59 PM
hey great low res models and like the idea of alteration and combination for different variations!
09-19-2005, 06:41 PM
A few more buildings, and some small props to help fill in the town. Once I get about 20 unique buildings I'll begin adding them to the super low-rez town I've blocked in, and the town should start taking shape. These houses are really easy and a lot of fun to build, (a nice break fron the chracter, which I am u.v. mapping right now).
Nice concept machine ! and nice little village too!
09-20-2005, 01:33 AM
You have a great concept , the models of the flying machine looks nice as does the character:thumbsup: . I like your building models you have done , I am glad you are finding them fun to model, hopefully I will find them fun to model as I have a medieval town and buildings in my concept too. Good luck with this.
09-20-2005, 05:22 AM
Very pretty Village Alexi... Simple, but largely sufficient for the resolution, goof work  I imagine yet the result with textures... let's go mate :bounce:
09-20-2005, 06:53 AM
Amazing ! Why didn't I see this thread before ?
First of all, your sketches are incredible ! great design ! Then, you seem to be a great modeler cos everything is full of details and really looks like the concept ! A great work flow at this time !
Maybe one of my favourite concept for the moment !
Congratulations !
09-20-2005, 01:48 PM
Here is the final bunch of ready-made buildings. I've alredy stared to place them in the low-rez town, slowly filling in the streets. I'll adjust them so they fit into thier specific sites properly (ie. corner houses will need windows on the open sides, and so on).
09-20-2005, 02:05 PM
Great low res buildings, I know how much of a pain it is making them :) Cant wait to see them in the scene!
09-20-2005, 02:31 PM
good idea , i like your concept...it seems a mix of Steamboy and The Castle in the Sky...good modeling and concepts sketchs too !
What kind of render will you use ?
09-20-2005, 02:32 PM
Very cool idea about the time and setup. Like the flying machines allot and a cool Low poly modeling of the city too. Good luck to you and it's always nice to visit your post and look at the progress.
09-20-2005, 03:11 PM
Smart thinking and cool modeling ..very well thought...
09-20-2005, 08:20 PM
awesome concept. It reminds me of Laputa.
No crits, just replying to subscribe.
09-20-2005, 08:32 PM
Excellent minimal polygon distribution Alexi!
This is coming together really well:thumbsup:
09-21-2005, 08:50 PM
Here is a larger view of the town in progress. I made a large hall with store fronts facing the open market area. I'm working on the citadel tower right now; trying to add levels and built in houses (without having it look too much like Minas Tirith). More posts comming soon.
09-21-2005, 08:55 PM
Hi, Alexi, I enjoy your concept and progress  keep it up
09-22-2005, 12:43 PM
I finished the first of my characters and her air craft. The model has been mapped so I begin to texture and pose her. I have to add some more detail on to the plane, and finish the area where the harness connects attaches. The control handles might need some work also, to properly fit the character's arms.
09-22-2005, 02:14 PM
Your work is really great. Can't wait to see what you can do with it.
09-22-2005, 03:33 PM
You're a mean concept designer, awesome dude. Model looks great, it's all on its way to be a really neat picture, top notch man, no crits!
09-22-2005, 06:38 PM
Some more views of the character and air craft.
09-22-2005, 08:02 PM
really good. it's really a good challenge.
09-22-2005, 08:42 PM
Wow, so clean and stylish - a slightly toony slant, yet still fully believable. That is truly skilled work.
09-22-2005, 08:48 PM
Very sweet and so perfect... super cool quoi
09-25-2005, 03:00 PM
I've been work on the town for the last couple days, and the citadel building is now mostly completed. I've also made some bridges, trees and some additional buildings. It's slow and steady work, but it's comming together.
09-25-2005, 11:20 PM
great work here!! congrats !very nice sketch & concept awesome composition and very clean modelling  keep postin'
09-26-2005, 05:07 AM
Very cool little town... congratulations Alexi...
09-26-2005, 05:20 AM
Very, very but very nice work on the modeling, how long did it take you?
09-26-2005, 05:37 AM
Wow, great things are happening there :)
Really nice modeling
Good luck for the next
09-26-2005, 08:25 AM
Yes, nice work ! Something makes me think of Steamboy, perhaps this is just the airplane style...

09-26-2005, 10:29 AM
Respected! Good luck
almost forgot that your last challenge entry was very nice, this one is comming great.
And the concept draw is lovely! Great line you have.
09-27-2005, 01:23 PM
HOLY CRAP, how long did it take you to model that.. you must be some sort of modelling master.. the geometry is AMAZING!!! Keep up the "RETARDED" work Alexi, can't wait to see your final.
09-28-2005, 07:08 AM
Impressive work :applause:
09-28-2005, 07:15 AM

Only one adjective comes to mind: Spectacular ! ! ! ! ! !
Spectacular preparatory work
One word sums it up
I look forward to seeing more.
Keep up the good work.
09-28-2005, 12:00 PM
Really good to see the city taking shape, looks great! Lov the placement of the windmill.
09-28-2005, 01:37 PM
That village is looking wonderful:thumbsup: , I really look forward to the texturing of the village. The flying contraptions also look great as does the character. Look forward to the next update.
09-30-2005, 01:43 PM
The town in almost completed, (the modelling that it, texturing is whole other story). But I've been filling in the empty spaces and adding lots of details. Soon I'll post some renders of it from different angles.
09-30-2005, 02:12 PM
This is tottaly SWEET! :bounce:
excelent work man !
u'v created a whole city location while keeping a very reasonable poly count (at least it looks that way).
i just hope u can texture and light that well too :)
09-30-2005, 02:58 PM
Very great job!
I just loved the buldings design  I liked your skeches too, and the idea is very promissing.
I will be waching here. Good luck!
09-30-2005, 03:01 PM
Hi , great work , that's an incredible number of details .
Good luck with texturing.
09-30-2005, 03:25 PM
Cool work Alexis! This is great, I like it very much , I like the concept too. Good luck for your next milestones. :)
10-01-2005, 07:46 AM
Ive only just found this one and its one of my favourites!
Superb concept, character sketches, modeling and design - everything about this entry is just sheer class!
Cant wait to see how it turns out.
10-01-2005, 08:01 AM

The city is beautiful I'm aware how much work did it take to build - men keep it up Good luck!!
Very cool idea! I can't wait to see te final image. I'm very curious at the texturing.
10-01-2005, 01:08 PM
Everything what I see here is fantastic.:scream: Good luck!!!
10-03-2005, 12:31 PM
Here is an un-textured render of the town model. I spent most of the weekend finishing up the central tower complex, but there are still a few empty areas. The model should be done within the next few days. I'm starting to texture the character as well, and I'll post some renders of her soon.
10-03-2005, 02:39 PM
the city came out very very nice! u could even make a walk through !:) yess definitly one of the cooler ones here!
watcha! impressiv work you did there. Nice sense of proportions also.
tha charactere now! c'mon, pls, post the charactere :bounce:
(mmmh texturing the village mm?)
10-03-2005, 05:11 PM
Another rendered view of the town, from another angle.

10-04-2005, 12:58 AM

10-04-2005, 03:14 AM
Congrats dude. Really impressive the levels of the details, i really liked the work.
10-04-2005, 05:33 AM
its just beautiful.... Very nice details, especially considering that this is not the center of interest in the image... great work..
10-04-2005, 05:56 PM
The town looks great; I can't wait to see it textured. And I also just found this thread for the first time, so I want to add that I love the concept as well. It's a pretty ambitious one, but it appears that you are having no trouble with it at all.
10-04-2005, 06:11 PM
thats a nice town. very good modeling and illumination. can't wait to see it with the textures:scream:
10-04-2005, 07:59 PM
Great progress, the buildings and your flying machine design rocks.Nice work with the poly count also.
Keep it up and cant wait for more:thumbsup:
10-05-2005, 08:06 PM
Here are a couple colour tests I've done for the airplane. I moved away from the yellow winged version in my concept drawing to a blue and red scheme. When I saw it in 3d I felt it wasn't working that well, so I tried another one using light and dark blue. The seat area with the controls turned out alright, but everything else is a work in progress.
10-05-2005, 08:19 PM
This is the latest version of the plane's colour. It's a little less busy and saturated then the previous versions, so as not to distract from the character. However, I still may go back to the original design if I can't get this one to work a little better. I'll need the plane to stand out against the town (which is going to be red and yellowish in colour and the ocean, which is blue-green).
10-05-2005, 11:13 PM
10-06-2005, 05:03 AM
damn dude what a sweet thread this is, it's a shame there aren't more of your threads floating around, i would love to see other examples of your work.
keep up the good work, the city is lookin great, character and mechanical design are spot on too.
10-06-2005, 06:34 AM
no words just :applause: :applause: :applause: ...
10-06-2005, 06:51 AM
Nice ! Textures are really good....
10-06-2005, 06:57 AM
Very nice! This whole thing is gonna look stunning when its finished! Especially when you texture up the town. The whole thing reminds me of Miyazaki films like laputa and porco rosso
10-06-2005, 07:01 AM
Wow, when i first saw your sketch it just blew me away.
And so far the modeling is just as good as the sketch:thumbsup:
I'm keeping my eye on you. (^_^)
my challenge entree (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?threadid=283168)
10-06-2005, 07:13 AM
I don't imagine you texture it like that... but it's really a good choice... totally agree with it... perfect so
It just looks like a 'Dinky Toy (http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=Dinky+Toys&meta=)', what is a good thing :)
10-06-2005, 09:49 AM
nice cool texturing ..very very stylish! this is going to look super!
10-06-2005, 12:24 PM
Here is a more detailed view of the seat area. There is still some u.v. stretching going on, but it's just about finished. I'm almost done the character now, so I'll be posting some images this afternoon. The NHL hockey season has started now so my productivity is going to slide a little, but I should be able to make the December deadline. go leafs go.
10-06-2005, 01:13 PM
yes man that texturing is ver good ,and the plane modes is cool. i'll be waiting for the pilot:scream:
10-06-2005, 01:38 PM
nice texture ! and great concept for prop!
10-06-2005, 05:07 PM
Some test renders of the pilot's textures. She's got the harness straps from the air plane, and I'm just about done modeling the facial expression. The hair is just a plain lambert yellow, but I'll make a more detailed texture with an alpha chanel. I might switch it to red to better suit the other elements.
10-06-2005, 05:14 PM
Looks good. I like the wool texture. I think the jetpack needs decals like a fighter plane.

Some renders of the character and plane together. The girl will be fairly easy to pose, and once that's done and the textures have been tweaked the character will be done. Hopefully I can finish texturing the town and start on the second character soon. I can use a lot of the parts and textures from this plane to make the second one.
10-08-2005, 01:51 AM
i love your style man, very awesome work :scream:
10-08-2005, 04:43 AM
I'm watching you from the beginning and want to tell that you're doing very nice
10-08-2005, 05:16 AM
ah... nice models... really like it:)
10-08-2005, 07:11 AM
Looking great. One small thing bugs me though - the shiny metal/ fiberglass type material the glider is made of looks a bit strange. Those small speckles and bumps make it look rough and irregular, yet it has a high gloss finish? Perhaps make the surface colour more constant and less noisy?
10-08-2005, 10:35 AM
i love your style
you do good modelling and nice concept..
10-08-2005, 11:31 AM
alex wonderful stuff ... great char and vehichle prompting childhood like emotions out of me
i gotta agree with andy though on the bump ... it threw me off a little too .. otherwise, fab stuff ... keep it coming
10-08-2005, 01:51 PM
Wonderful work. You have some great texturing on there.
10-08-2005, 08:35 PM
your texturing is cool,I like you modeling, good luck:thumbsup:
10-09-2005, 12:30 AM
Another huge leap forward!
10-10-2005, 02:31 AM
hey man....looking good:buttrock:
10-10-2005, 09:34 AM
I follow this thread since the start and it's really great, one of my favorites. I love the city, the point of view, the machine.
Just a little crit on the last picture you made, I think the machine is too reflective or maybe you have to connect it with the bump map; She seems very smooth with the highlight but seems more like clothe on bump and color.
Very cool !
Good design character and i like your plane color.
10-10-2005, 05:28 PM
Good, but looks like diffuse and specular maps are not fit each other. Plus, I couldn't anderstand waht your air crafts are made of. Strange material. Looks like cloth.
10-11-2005, 04:57 PM
A half-render half painting of the town and surrounding landscape. It's all going to be 3d in the final image, but this is the general concept. I'm gonna see how quickly I can texture this thing, then start the second character.
10-11-2005, 06:12 PM
The ammount of buildings and their variety makes a great cityscape, great work so far
I`m looking forward for the textured town version.
10-11-2005, 06:26 PM
hey great modeling of that town, and vey good rendering...i'll be waiting for the textures:thumbsup:
10-11-2005, 06:43 PM
I like the POV, and the concept is inspiring to me. I've dreamnt about flying like this many times in my sleep - although I usually just jump up and start moving my arms as though swimming through the sky. I wonder how many peeps have the same dream?
In any case, see - your concept got the java brewing. Looking forward to seeing this through. :)
10-11-2005, 06:49 PM
Some views of the character's pose. I've adjusted the texture on the plane's surface, reducing the bump map and the reflectivity. I was going for a glazed fiber-glass type thing but I don't think it looked very good. Now I'll try for a more polished metal look. I need to finish the hair still (adding more strands and creating a texture), but otherwise it is just about done. Thanks to everyone who left comments and suggestions.
10-12-2005, 12:49 PM
Great stuff Alexi! Can't wait to see your final
10-12-2005, 01:02 PM
Nothing to crit... very simpathetic stuff... very cool...
great work so far Alexi
10-12-2005, 01:46 PM
:applause: nothing more to say...
10-12-2005, 02:07 PM
Great Concept and Design. Believebale. I just thought maybe, his legs hang around in a weird way. Or better said. You know in Hanggliders they have a bag for the legs, just thought maybe that would made more sense. Just a thought.
10-12-2005, 05:03 PM
Everything is great. I really like your caracters. One question, why you didnt map the city before you model it, I mean I imagine that there are some buildings that are copyes of others, to speed the motheling, so why you didnt texture them before model the entire city. Or did you keep them like instances to make easier the texture proces?. Jus a thought.
10-12-2005, 07:46 PM
I didn't map the buildings from the begining because I figured I would be changing each of the base buildings around and that the original maps would get distorted. My plan is to just automatic map the buildings, and apply genetic tiled textures of stone or plaster. I've made a pretty good roof texture (clay tiles) that I can apply to most of the rooves, (which i can map with a Y axis planar map). Hopefully this kind of half-assed approach will hold up from the distance teh town is going to be seen from. The key will be to have the textures simple enough that seams and repeated areas woun't be noticed. ac.
10-12-2005, 08:03 PM
Wow Alexi, the different aspects of your scene have a great styling... They remind me of my old Moebius comix:thumbsup: Loving the way this is coming together mate... Keep Rokkin:buttrock:
10-17-2005, 07:53 PM
The town is done now, in terms of modeling. Here are a couple renders from different views I'm concidering using for the final image. I added in some trees and extended the terrain a bit, but I think I'd better add some more trees to fill up the space. I'm doing texturing tests and I should be posting the results soon.
10-17-2005, 08:21 PM
And the other side . . .It looks cool from this vantage point, so I may flip the image horizonally and use it to fit my composition (from the concept sketch). However, the other side has the runway and waterfall, so it make more sense to go with that one. Much to ponder, there is.
10-17-2005, 08:40 PM
Congratulations.....very good. I like this kind of village. You cad add a litle island with a lighthouse on the top of it.
10-17-2005, 08:43 PM
wow. thats cool man
10-17-2005, 08:44 PM
That give me the envy to play with it... the toy village... seriously... your work is fantastic Alexi

10-18-2005, 10:28 AM
Maaan, that's SPECTACULAR! already...ah you...you ....no words. The first view is better!
10-18-2005, 11:12 AM

Hi Alexi, kickass stuff happening here. Love the concept. Sorry I haven't visited earlier, but I'll follow from now on.
The city is great! Really amazing. This is the best idea for the contest I´ve seen so far.
10-18-2005, 08:37 PM
Really great ! amazing detail !

This is really spectacular! Great concept and wonderful idea!
10-23-2005, 08:14 PM
That is beautiful. No real crits. I love the scale and the setting and design. It must be a wonderful place to live :) Looking forward to seeing more of this image as it continues.
10-23-2005, 08:40 PM
Wow Alex! That's really very cool stuff! The city is really very similar to 'the ultimate city'... It may be a city of my dreams...! Really cool to see you're able to build such a cool concept around the challenge theme! :scream:
I can't wait for the moment in the image-creation process when your gonna play with the mood - the lighting & texturing...! :)
You might wanna check out my GSO entry (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=180665)... It's a little bit similar to your work here, only you do it better! I've seen myself how hard it is to get a whole city of different looking houses, so I admire you the more!
Have tons of fun & Lots of luck!
10-25-2005, 02:28 AM
A detail of some of the textured buildings. I've made up several different stone and roof textures and I've begun to appy them to the buildings that will be nearest to the camera. It has been really slow going, but once I get the (original) buildings mapped properly it will just be a matter of transfering those u.v.'s to the other copies of that building.
10-25-2005, 02:35 AM
looks very nice
10-25-2005, 02:42 AM
Here is a shot of the whole town with the textured rooves. The testure are 256 or 512 pixel tiles that I can re-use on rooves of (almost)any shape. For the towers a tile texture was revolved in photoshop (with thanks to Chris). The hardest to size correctly was the citadel building (the largest dome), which still needs a bit of work.
10-25-2005, 05:47 AM
• Yeah! i like the idea, love that strategy game style on the city and i must say, i love the idea of those guys flyingaway, it promises an spectacular image
10-25-2005, 06:23 AM
Pretty and cool... nothing to crit... just very pleasant
Same thing as Lemog, nothing to crit, this city looks nice!
10-25-2005, 12:41 PM
Really lovely stuff here alexi, great work!
I dropped you a PM by the way :)
10-25-2005, 12:46 PM

10-25-2005, 12:47 PM
Crazy concept! I like it !

very brilliant ! I follow this thread for a moment, it's time to say what I think !
WAAAAAAAW ! :scream:

10-25-2005, 02:21 PM
wow really detailed roof texture !
10-25-2005, 03:09 PM
hey the texturing on the roof is great, i think that you have a beatuful escene with that town:eek:
10-25-2005, 04:21 PM
excellent work again Alexi !
10-25-2005, 04:30 PM
Greate job!!! realistic and stylish! Keep it up!
very nice progress !
ya gonna texture the walls next ? make sure u varray their detail as well as you did on the roofs :)
10-26-2005, 09:59 AM
it's a delight for the eyes.
Nothing to say but move on. It's great work.
10-28-2005, 07:57 PM
Here are some of the textured buildings and props. It's taking a lot longer then I thought to texture the houses, even though I'm not mapping them really carefully. And because I added little details to many of the copies I can't even transfer the u.v.'s. My delema now is whether to make all the buildings out of the same stone texture or to varry textures (as I've been doing). This adds interest but makes the town look kinda cluttered. Maybe I'll just desaturate them all a bit so certain textures don't stand out so much.
10-28-2005, 08:03 PM
A more detailed view of buildings and streets. I've got some low-rez people and horses walking aroung and I'll be adding more, as well as some other details to fill in the space. Hopefully I can finish over the weekend and get going on the second character!
10-28-2005, 08:33 PM
Can't wait to see the finished piece!
ey man, besides saing again ya doing a good job on this image, as one who is currently working ona huge scene myself, I gotta tell ya u are doing a great job with keeping everything (poly count and texture size limits) so detailed yet affordable to render ! :applause:
can ya give us some info about that ? (whats the poly count, how many objects, how many textures)
10-28-2005, 09:25 PM
wo wo wo i am realy exited watching your progress :bounce: :bounce::bounce: welldone ...... luck may be
with you
10-29-2005, 08:37 AM
Very pretty and inspiring  it's very funny to discover all these "little details"... bravo :bounce:
10-30-2005, 12:11 AM
In response to zman's question about the size if the town: Right now it is 200,780 faces (and 40mb), but I'm always adding more stuff. I'm using about 30 different textures right now, 12 different stone\brick types, 4 kinds of rooves and various colours of wood, plaster and grass. Typically the textures are 512 by 512 and are tilable. I've just made some good cobble stone textures for the ground and rock for the cliff face, so I'm nearing the end. Alexi
10-30-2005, 02:05 PM
the closeups look amazing! I wonder what the whole composition (with characters) looks like now.
By the way, did you get the PM I sent you a couple of days ago?
10-30-2005, 05:36 PM
What a lot of details in that piece...:applause: great progress:thumbsup:
11-01-2005, 07:34 PM
Well, the buildings are finally done. I realize that you can't really see much detail from this far away, so I'll post a close up or two, once I finish texturing the ground. Hopefully I can finish everything within the next few days and I can start lighting the final composition. (I just hope the details will show well in the final image).
11-01-2005, 07:39 PM
Same thing, just another view. I'm not sure how I'll handle the cliff side (it dosn't look that good when I smooth it), so I'll probably end up adding more edges to keep the ridges well defined.
11-01-2005, 08:25 PM
that's awsome dude, great!!
Keep it up:buttrock:
11-01-2005, 08:43 PM
great view, beautiful city, and the textures are looking good:buttrock:
11-01-2005, 09:03 PM
 Exellent work my freind, Love the City. Keep it up.
Very impressive! The city itself is looking spectacular so far :) It definitely has a more toy-ish style than real, so good luck with keeping it all consistent!
11-01-2005, 10:47 PM
awesome modelling ,i like it very much.
11-01-2005, 11:32 PM
looking good the town! :bounce: :bounce: ! understatement it looks great!! :):)
11-03-2005, 05:55 PM
The town is done! Now it's just the cliff and the water that need to be textured and the background will be complete. Soon I'll bring everything together and work out the final composition and lighting.
11-03-2005, 05:59 PM
Here is a detail of that last render. The details did't show up too well when I compressed the image to 150kb. In this view you can see a few items still need textureing, and I'm going to add more prople to fill out the streets.
11-03-2005, 06:02 PM
Looks good. I think the hole in the big dome needs to be textured with something a little darker.
11-04-2005, 05:38 AM
this is coming along spectacularly!
11-04-2005, 06:52 AM
Your creation is a real dream for me... I imagine myself... walking in the market place... :applause:
11-04-2005, 07:01 AM
Your details are amazing:applause: . I really like your scene!!:)
11-04-2005, 03:22 PM
Wow that's beutiful! Gives a warm feeling when I'm looking at it. Just imagine that someday the strategy games will look like that... oh yeah...
11-05-2005, 06:19 AM
Alexi, your work is just amazing, I'm with lemog walking in it.
I want a little city like that to myself, how much for one?
Stunning simply stunning!
11-05-2005, 08:41 AM
man this entry simply rocks!! im speechless:arteest:
11-05-2005, 04:07 PM
Amazing work. I really enjoy each step, there is so much to learn from your work. I am speachless.
11-05-2005, 07:01 PM
i don't know how can i show you my feeling alexi ...... wow !! :bounce:
11-06-2005, 02:40 PM
what can i said....excellent work here, just waiting and seeing your work :)
waiting for your next update !
The village is already spectacular. :)
11-08-2005, 02:52 PM
Here is the latest render of the town, it dosn't look like much has changed but I've been textureing a lot of the smaller ogjects and adding more details. I've got the cliffs textured, though I'm still going to add a layer of moss over the rock. The ocean still needs a texture as well, and the river needs some more work. But other then that I'm happy with how it's all comming together. All that's left is adding some more people in the streets.
11-08-2005, 03:05 PM
it dosn't look like much has changed
Quite in contrary, it looks much more lively now! This really starts looking more and more spectacular, keep up the great work
11-08-2005, 03:21 PM
Great textures, care to show some techniques?
11-08-2005, 04:16 PM
This is one that I really can't wait to see the composited image! love the elements seperately.
11-08-2005, 04:56 PM
:shrug:i have nothing to say, i have no words to say what i feel to you work:D
11-09-2005, 02:12 AM
Must be fun to texture all those tiny bits :). Looking great, nice image! Should look spectacular with the final lighting.
11-09-2005, 02:43 AM
Ahh, this looks so well - very curious to how the final'll look! It's still beautiful, though not yet spectacular.. though I imagine a well made lighting would really make this amazing.
11-09-2005, 07:49 PM
Alexi, it's an outstanding work with architecture! everything seems so "toy-like" - great!
With some fog this can come out with good depth and feeling of height! And good sence of color also!http://forums.cgsociety.org/images/icons/icon13.gif
11-09-2005, 08:18 PM
Looking good with that texturing, Keep going. Will your people be in low poly?
If you have time could you post a rendered shot from the main tower overlooking the town?(i've been wanting to see the perspective of the town.):buttrock:
11-09-2005, 08:22 PM
WOW! Great job. I love the look of it, it reminds me of something Age of Empires-ish. It'd be cool to see an animation of them flying over the city when its all done. I can't wait to see the next update
11-09-2005, 09:24 PM
Great Work. And it seems alot of work. I know that you are going to be a winer. Good luck we all are watching with interest.
