So here is my general idea, it's sort of a future-past setting with kids in old-school propellor driven air ships, high above thier cliff side town. There is going to be an ocean and some clouds beneath them, and if that isn't spectacular enough, I'll through in some lens flares and motion blur. I'd like to try a combination of cartoony charcters and realistic (but stylized) backgrounds. Hopefully it will turn out ok.

Thanks for the comment on foreshortening , chris that guy, but the characters aren't supposed to be parallel to the ground. I wanted it to look like they where doing barrel rolls or something. Maybe with vapour trials this will be more evident. I may set the second character back in space a bit, (it's gonna be 3d, so I can adjust the elements a lot for the final image). I'm going to start with ont of the plans tonight, adn on some of the buikldings for the town. Alexi.

Nice sketch. The two characters remind me of Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable for some reason, hehe. No doubt the modeling will be great, but maybe play with the composition a bit more.

Here are some designs for the girl character, with a little help from by buddy brian wong (his are the good ones). I tried to keep the design simple and fairly cartoony, kind of like the characters from the incredibles, (but not in a copyright infringment, get sued by pixar sort of way.) This is the character I'm going to start with, and hopefully I'll have time for both.

really nice designs man and the concept looks lovely.it cool to see someone else designing there character before modelling lots of people just can do a doodle and fire in the modeling.
if you can get the sense of distance between them and the city ,like they are really high up then it will be spectacular good luck

Here are some possible designs for the male character. I hope I have time to get to him. I plan to do the girl and her airplane thing first, then the town, then this guy. So if I'm running out of time I can drop him from the scene. I'm working on more detailed drawing of the planes and the city, and I'll be posting them soon to get some feed back before I start modeling.

I did some specs for the two planes and some colour tests. This one is sort of based on a generic WW2 bobmber. I've started modeling the engine components and various mechanical elements. It's a welcome change from the stuff I model at work on the "Miss Spider and the Sunny Patch Friends" show (seriously, that's what its called). Anyway, thanks for all the comments so far.

Yeah, I get that. I just mean: more overlap between the characters and the city, and if you bring one character closer and overlap the second a little, it will add to the sense of virtigo.

Another technical drawing of a aircraft (I think I'll call them flightpacks). I made these sketches for modelling purposes, but I decided to ink and colour them as well, to experiment with different looks. This colour sceme, as well as many design elements, are based on a combination of world war one aircraft.

I've made some good progress on the first air ship, shown next to the original concept sketch. I usually start with nurbs for the smmoth and flowing sections, then convert the geometry into pollys to add details. I used some books to reference 1930's engines to give the craft a reto look. I'm not sure how these things are supposed to land, but I suppose it dosn't really matter.

Another view of the plane, with some close-ups on the control handle. It is a fairly typical aviation-style joystick, but I added some dials and controls on top. I'll probably have to adjust it for the size of the character, which I suppose I should have made first.

Some sketches of the town, which i've got fairly well planed. It is going to be stone and plaster buildings with clay-tile roves, sort of like Florance or Nuremburg, but more fantasical. Hopefully it will not end up looking too much like naboo from starwars eposode 1.

I've begun to block in the town's layout using simple cubes and cylinders. The next step is to combine some architecual elements with generic houses to create a variety of structures. These can be mixed customized buildings which will fit in particular locations. I think I'll keep it fairly low-rez, because the whole town will be seen from high above.

I've been working on the first character for a while now, and she's just about finished. The hair is made of nurbs, and everything else is polygons. I went for a cartoony look so everything is rounded and simplified. A bit more tweaking and then i can u.v. map the geometry and then miror it.

Here is a screen shot of some house models for the town. I have been keeping them fairly low-rez because the town is going to be seen from way above, but I'm still throwing in some details around the doors and windows. I've purposly tweaked the vertecies to give the geomety an imperfect look and add some character. These units will be combined and altered to create more variety.

A few more buildings, and some small props to help fill in the town. Once I get about 20 unique buildings I'll begin adding them to the super low-rez town I've blocked in, and the town should start taking shape. These houses are really easy and a lot of fun to build, (a nice break fron the chracter, which I am u.v. mapping right now).

Here is the final bunch of ready-made buildings. I've alredy stared to place them in the low-rez town, slowly filling in the streets. I'll adjust them so they fit into thier specific sites properly (ie. corner houses will need windows on the open sides, and so on).

Here is a larger view of the town in progress. I made a large hall with store fronts facing the open market area. I'm working on the citadel tower right now; trying to add levels and built in houses (without having it look too much like Minas Tirith). More posts comming soon.

I finished the first of my characters and her air craft. The model has been mapped so I begin to texture and pose her. I have to add some more detail on to the plane, and finish the area where the harness connects attaches. The control handles might need some work also, to properly fit the character's arms.

I've been work on the town for the last couple days, and the citadel building is now mostly completed. I've also made some bridges, trees and some additional buildings. It's slow and steady work, but it's comming together.

The town in almost completed, (the modelling that it, texturing is whole other story). But I've been filling in the empty spaces and adding lots of details. Soon I'll post some renders of it from different angles.

Here is an un-textured render of the town model. I spent most of the weekend finishing up the central tower complex, but there are still a few empty areas. The model should be done within the next few days. I'm starting to texture the character as well, and I'll post some renders of her soon.

Here are a couple colour tests I've done for the airplane. I moved away from the yellow winged version in my concept drawing to a blue and red scheme. When I saw it in 3d I felt it wasn't working that well, so I tried another one using light and dark blue. The seat area with the controls turned out alright, but everything else is a work in progress.

This is the latest version of the plane's colour. It's a little less busy and saturated then the previous versions, so as not to distract from the character. However, I still may go back to the original design if I can't get this one to work a little better. I'll need the plane to stand out against the town (which is going to be red and yellowish in colour and the ocean, which is blue-green).

Very nice! This whole thing is gonna look stunning when its finished! Especially when you texture up the town. The whole thing reminds me of Miyazaki films like laputa and porco rosso :thumbsup:

Here is a more detailed view of the seat area. There is still some u.v. stretching going on, but it's just about finished. I'm almost done the character now, so I'll be posting some images this afternoon. The NHL hockey season has started now so my productivity is going to slide a little, but I should be able to make the December deadline. go leafs go.

Some test renders of the pilot's textures. She's got the harness straps from the air plane, and I'm just about done modeling the facial expression. The hair is just a plain lambert yellow, but I'll make a more detailed texture with an alpha chanel. I might switch it to red to better suit the other elements.

Some renders of the character and plane together. The girl will be fairly easy to pose, and once that's done and the textures have been tweaked the character will be done. Hopefully I can finish texturing the town and start on the second character soon. I can use a lot of the parts and textures from this plane to make the second one.

Looking great. One small thing bugs me though - the shiny metal/ fiberglass type material the glider is made of looks a bit strange. Those small speckles and bumps make it look rough and irregular, yet it has a high gloss finish? Perhaps make the surface colour more constant and less noisy?

I follow this thread since the start and it's really great, one of my favorites. I love the city, the point of view, the machine.
Just a little crit on the last picture you made, I think the machine is too reflective or maybe you have to connect it with the bump map; She seems very smooth with the highlight but seems more like clothe on bump and color.

I like the POV, and the concept is inspiring to me. I've dreamnt about flying like this many times in my sleep - although I usually just jump up and start moving my arms as though swimming through the sky. I wonder how many peeps have the same dream?

Some views of the character's pose. I've adjusted the texture on the plane's surface, reducing the bump map and the reflectivity. I was going for a glazed fiber-glass type thing but I don't think it looked very good. Now I'll try for a more polished metal look. I need to finish the hair still (adding more strands and creating a texture), but otherwise it is just about done. Thanks to everyone who left comments and suggestions.

Everything is great. I really like your caracters. One question, why you didnt map the city before you model it, I mean I imagine that there are some buildings that are copyes of others, to speed the motheling, so why you didnt texture them before model the entire city. Or did you keep them like instances to make easier the texture proces?. Jus a thought. :thumbsup:

I didn't map the buildings from the begining because I figured I would be changing each of the base buildings around and that the original maps would get distorted. My plan is to just automatic map the buildings, and apply genetic tiled textures of stone or plaster. I've made a pretty good roof texture (clay tiles) that I can apply to most of the rooves, (which i can map with a Y axis planar map). Hopefully this kind of half-assed approach will hold up from the distance teh town is going to be seen from. The key will be to have the textures simple enough that seams and repeated areas woun't be noticed. ac.

The town is done now, in terms of modeling. Here are a couple renders from different views I'm concidering using for the final image. I added in some trees and extended the terrain a bit, but I think I'd better add some more trees to fill up the space. I'm doing texturing tests and I should be posting the results soon.

And the other side . . .It looks cool from this vantage point, so I may flip the image horizonally and use it to fit my composition (from the concept sketch). However, the other side has the runway and waterfall, so it make more sense to go with that one. Much to ponder, there is.

A detail of some of the textured buildings. I've made up several different stone and roof textures and I've begun to appy them to the buildings that will be nearest to the camera. It has been really slow going, but once I get the (original) buildings mapped properly it will just be a matter of transfering those u.v.'s to the other copies of that building.

Here is a shot of the whole town with the textured rooves. The testure are 256 or 512 pixel tiles that I can re-use on rooves of (almost)any shape. For the towers a tile texture was revolved in photoshop (with thanks to Chris). The hardest to size correctly was the citadel building (the largest dome), which still needs a bit of work.

Here are some of the textured buildings and props. It's taking a lot longer then I thought to texture the houses, even though I'm not mapping them really carefully. And because I added little details to many of the copies I can't even transfer the u.v.'s. My delema now is whether to make all the buildings out of the same stone texture or to varry textures (as I've been doing). This adds interest but makes the town look kinda cluttered. Maybe I'll just desaturate them all a bit so certain textures don't stand out so much.

In response to zman's question about the size if the town: Right now it is 200,780 faces (and 40mb), but I'm always adding more stuff. I'm using about 30 different textures right now, 12 different stone\brick types, 4 kinds of rooves and various colours of wood, plaster and grass. Typically the textures are 512 by 512 and are tilable. I've just made some good cobble stone textures for the ground and rock for the cliff face, so I'm nearing the end. Alexi

Well, the buildings are finally done. I realize that you can't really see much detail from this far away, so I'll post a close up or two, once I finish texturing the ground. Hopefully I can finish everything within the next few days and I can start lighting the final composition. (I just hope the details will show well in the final image).

Same thing, just another view. I'm not sure how I'll handle the cliff side (it dosn't look that good when I smooth it), so I'll probably end up adding more edges to keep the ridges well defined.

Here is the latest render of the town, it dosn't look like much has changed but I've been textureing a lot of the smaller ogjects and adding more details. I've got the cliffs textured, though I'm still going to add a layer of moss over the rock. The ocean still needs a texture as well, and the river needs some more work. But other then that I'm happy with how it's all comming together. All that's left is adding some more people in the streets.
