Central Europe. Poland. Near the crossing of borders between Poland and Ukraine, Poland and Byelorus. Grand forests of province Lubelskie. Dedicated mushroom picker just found a mushroom that no man has yet seen (or ate :D ) - biggest Boletus erythropus in the solar system.

I present to you the darkest mushroom picking in the entire history of mushroom picking

09-06-2005, 06:23 PM
haha cool idea!! I look forward to seeing more progress, maybe a more dramatic angle? looking up at the muchroom perhaps. Nice work!

09-06-2005, 06:24 PM
awww look the cute animal hehehe.

i agree with enialadam on the angle though!

09-06-2005, 06:27 PM
cool idea.
and agree about interesting angle too.

09-06-2005, 06:31 PM
What a show-off mushroom, man :applause: haha. Good luck and may the Mushroom be with you!

09-06-2005, 06:37 PM
Scale of the mushroom is key, yeah change the angle, good luck, holla!

second view of angle

09-06-2005, 07:56 PM
I've added two concepts - 5mins each (no time to sketch now - school tomorrow :( ). What do you think about this two ideas? "Your opinions are important to me" ;) especially about the angle.

09-06-2005, 08:01 PM
Iīd make the mushroom bigger, exagerated, specially the above part,! I donīt know the english term to the above part of a mushroom:shrug: :D

09-06-2005, 08:07 PM
very nice idea :) enjoy :)

bardzo fajny pomysł :) powodzenia :)

09-06-2005, 08:08 PM
I agree with Gonzalo Golpe, concept one is closer to my thoughts on the angle. Nice work keep the sketches coming! :D

Good luck

09-07-2005, 05:33 AM
nice to see you here ;) great concept - waiting for some more detalis, hope u will get prize :)

09-07-2005, 12:35 PM (

Third concept

09-07-2005, 12:39 PM (

Fourth mushroom concept

09-07-2005, 12:44 PM
Two new concepts. I think that third is the best, but I'm still waiting for your opinions (before starting coloring WIP)

09-07-2005, 02:38 PM (

Angle concept 3 in color

09-07-2005, 02:41 PM
Hey there ,nice start and fun idea!!!maybe you should play around some more with your camera angles.Something like a few from below up to the mushroom to make this mushroom look really overwhelming, dominating and huge.
Good luck and have fun:thumbsup:

09-07-2005, 02:46 PM
What do you think about this angle? should I keep changing it ?

09-07-2005, 02:54 PM
Indeed I should maybe have done a more agressive angle from below.More perspective from the root of the mushroom quit near to us till the upside of the mushroom so far away from us.

Still is an great and funny idea.
Maybe to go more dramatic it could be some kind of a giant cutting down the mushroom with all this windows and balconys, etc, etc on the mushroom with these scared dwarf's jumping out in panic.
that's just an suggestion ofcourse.(maybe had to many mushroom's myself there,ha,ha)

09-07-2005, 03:25 PM (

Fifth angle sketch. Is angle correct ? maybe sketch need some changes ? Waiting for opinions :)

09-07-2005, 04:08 PM
I like angle four the best. The mushroom crops off the top of the picture so it really gives that sense of looming. But in concept five we have the little guy in forced perspective too, so we are also looking up at him, which makes him intimidating also.
I like that in four the mushroom seems opressively big, but the gy still seems teeny.
well thats my 2cents.
good luck :)

09-07-2005, 04:17 PM
That last concept works, I love that you have forced the perspective, on the Mushroom and the guy, now probably work on the guys poses, to give more life and dynamics, really cool!

09-07-2005, 04:25 PM (

I've connected concepts four and five - idea based on Cavematty post :)

Guy is smaller - hope you like it. Any ideas of guy poses ?

09-07-2005, 05:55 PM (

First colors... This sketch will be my coloring WIP. Mushroom picker pose taken from sketch fourth.

I await your opinions :)

09-07-2005, 06:55 PM
yeah! Much better I like this a lot! Can't wait to see what else you come up with, nice work!

09-08-2005, 01:54 PM (

Some more details and provisional lights :)

waiting for comments...

09-08-2005, 02:05 PM
I had some doubts about your mushroom concept earlier When browsing thru 2D) but now I'm happy that I waited a day longer before posting here :) Now it looks really cool!

I just can wonder how "spectacular" that gigantic mushroom would smell irl (btw I hate the stench of mushrooms) :D

09-08-2005, 02:34 PM
Yeah, much better:) And just a thing: Why donīt you open the angle of the camera to watch the hole mushroom and more part of the forest? Go for it!

09-08-2005, 02:43 PM
Gonzalo Golpe ( Mushroom seems to be bigger in this angle of camera. If I'll show whole "hat" (mushroom top part) camera angle will look more horizontal.

At least... I think so :P

09-08-2005, 05:46 PM (

I've changed background trees on the right.

Do the changes result in better effect or should I return to the previous positions of the trees ?

09-08-2005, 06:25 PM
Hey man, you're idea's really original. I think your previous sketch holds the picture a lot better. The angle of the tree of your current sketch seems to drift off the picture. Goodluck dude!

09-09-2005, 01:25 PM
Original idea...

Also I know why the mushroom is so big, beacause it was contamined by the Tchernobyl explosion... don`t eat it :D

Anyway good luck

09-09-2005, 01:54 PM
I'm glad you've started adding a few more 'less spectacular' mushrooms - I want to see loads more mushrooms! (your character defiinitely going for the pick of the crop)
Good work. I like the chubby little dude with the ax - maybe it would be nice to see him in a costume as weird as the situation?

09-09-2005, 02:08 PM
ok, Drakula:) I meant add more vertical to the hole composition to show the hat, but allright, Itīs your composition:) Iīll say that your compositionīs one of my favourites:thumbsup:

09-09-2005, 02:57 PM (

I've made layers with separated trees. Now I can change the backround fast an easy ;) What do you think about it ?

Is the background color ok ? Maybe something more foggy ?

Waiting for opinions, comments and ideas.

09-09-2005, 06:13 PM (

Some mushrooms and branches added.

Big mushroom bottom part lightning basically changed.

Trees background changed.

As always - waiting for your opinions :D

09-09-2005, 10:23 PM
In my opinion the guy from Concept Sketch: final sketch had way better perspective and fitted more to overall angle. I'm waiting for the color progress ;)

09-09-2005, 10:32 PM
HAHA looks like we're going to have a lot fun with that one!. Great concept. Powodzenia!

09-10-2005, 07:07 PM (

I've cleaned some grass before painting it seriously. Stump almost finished :)

09-10-2005, 07:09 PM (

Closeup of the stump :)

09-10-2005, 07:13 PM
your idea is really different and in your close-up I can see you have great attention to details. when you added the foreground mushrooms it shrunk your man a bit and he's starting to look more like a very tiny person rather than a normal sized guy chopping down a really big mushroom. i'm not sure what could fix it... or if i'm the only person who thinks this is happening?

also, the trees that fade into the background are done really well, even at this early of a stage. nice work.

09-10-2005, 07:29 PM
Yes I noticed that too, the guy looks like a dwarf :D
You can probalby fix that easilly...

The closeup looks great

09-10-2005, 07:31 PM
I think it would be a good idea if there was a fairly big mushroom in the forground. One that would be impressive compared to everyday mushrooms, but is completely ignored because of the humongous one in the midground. And maybe put the cute animals back in, watching the guy.

Nice work.

09-10-2005, 07:32 PM
nice coloring...

09-10-2005, 07:33 PM shrunk your man a bit and he's starting to look more like a very tiny person rather than a normal sized guy chopping down a really big mushroom. i'm not sure what could fix it... ...

Maybe put things beside him that set the scale, like small trees, or a deer.

09-11-2005, 10:48 AM (

I've started to color tree, and path. Big brench on the middle of the image has been removed - IMO it was the account for the mushroom picker scale problem. I've added little polypody on the right (instead of deer - I can't find place for it :( ) - maybe now guy looks better.

What do you think about the changes ? Hope you like it :)

09-11-2005, 12:43 PM
You're going in the wrong direction with the composition now. Read my previous post, this might help to fix the guy's scale or maybe I'm wrong?.

09-11-2005, 12:55 PM
you mean this sketch ?

09-13-2005, 04:37 PM (

some little updates. I've added some leaves and I've started to paint more background details.

Waiting for opinions. I still don't know how to pose mushroom picker o_O

09-14-2005, 09:46 AM
interesting idea...
hallucinogenic mushroom :)

Powodzenia ;)

09-14-2005, 10:20 AM
Try to have your trees follow the perspective of the mushroom (it is somewhere in the middle to tope of the mushroom, the vp I mean), the way you have it draw now, it is downgrading the image causing confusion and you want to do that. YOu want to keep that illusion of scale! I wouldn't go landscape with this image neither, I go portrait, so you can increase the size of this mushroom, and follow the concept sketch that you have previously drawn out, these should help you out some, this Image can look very promising if you do these things, will check back lata! Great stuff so far, holla!

09-14-2005, 01:26 PM
i really liked the final line art....looking good ..keep chopping!!!

09-14-2005, 02:14 PM (

I don't have time to paint more at the moment. I think it looks a bit better. Soon I'll try to make new trees with better perspective (maybe it will be better to change mushroom angle a bit ? )

Beelow: Don't you think that if I'll make "portriat background" the whole image will look... hmm... empty? Maybe I didn't understand what you were trying to say, but it seems to me that "portriat background" mean very simple background.

09-14-2005, 04:15 PM
I show what I mean, I'm sorry if you did not understand, I will post some quick later, I am in class right now. holla!

09-14-2005, 08:36 PM
hey man, cool, love those shrooms (they don't have them here)
I think that lttle bit of the hat showing, that means you have to go up a bit would help,
the size of the little guy, I think is made by trees and the bottom part of the foreground, the proportions are of, check that, landscape works for me on that, but perspective of the trees this could make a big difference,
be back later

09-15-2005, 03:58 PM (

I've added some bushes... I think that I'll change a bit the mushroom picker's pose.

What do you think about the update?

09-24-2005, 08:38 AM
Maybe this could help You. (

09-24-2005, 02:43 PM
helo man! this is crazy ha ha I like it, this little fela looks like ex-presidend of Poland...

but i like it keep it runing man ! this is goood !

09-24-2005, 03:18 PM
Nice theme, good colours, but your composition is bizarre. The mushroom, along with the guy, should be the focus, yet we can't see the top of the mushroom at all. Instead, 1/4 of the image is just ground and leaves. The bottom 1/4 should be chopped off (pardon the pun) and added to the top, moving the tree stump up as required. Another problem is that the guy is central. I'd move the shroom and the guy over to the right.

09-24-2005, 05:04 PM
helo man! this is crazy ha ha I like it, this little fela looks like ex-presidend of Poland...

but i like it keep it runing man ! this is goood !
HAHAHAHAHAH You mean Lech Wałęsa? Now I see it too :D

10-13-2005, 07:33 PM
one of the best ideas in the contest!

go on boy!

10-14-2005, 06:07 AM
Huh, I almost forgot about the chellenge :D I'll try to make sth today. Trees are going to be painted again - these are not satisfying me :)

thx for comments

10-14-2005, 06:51 AM (

And here's my vision of new trees, background and composition. No mushroom picker yet - I'll add him soon.

any ideas ?

10-15-2005, 02:27 PM (

And some coloring. There are some unerased things, but don't take notice about it - it's still just a beginning of final coloring :)

10-16-2005, 05:04 PM (

Here comes the fat boy :D No axe now - chainsaw will be better i think :>

10-16-2005, 05:06 PM (

And some dirty updates on the whole image. Hope you like it.

waiting for comments :)

10-16-2005, 05:20 PM
Hey! I like the two small mushrooms! :) You should add more stuff like that, just small things that make some variation in the environment.. I think the trees make the image look flat.. The ones which is far away is almost as thick as the ones close and in some places the far away ones are thicker then the closer ones.. This really disturbes the depth pf the image!

Good luck!

10-16-2005, 06:22 PM
i like the idea you have going, but it seems like there should be a treasure trove of tinier mushrooms of the same and maybe different kinds, like a shrine almost, surrounding the bigger mushroom.

10-18-2005, 06:24 PM (

And some updates on the right :)

10-19-2005, 12:15 AM
Hm, now I'm actually a bit confused. I was about to comment Your work before last update. Ok, now the mushroom looks really huge but we lost that cute foliage on the left. The dude with chainsaw brought some humoristic flavor to the painting but how the jury is gonna take it? :P Anyway I'm really impressed with the technique progress. Keep my thumbs for You mate.

10-19-2005, 11:45 AM (

And some little updates of the top part of the mushroom. Soon I'll try to update with something "bigger".

10-23-2005, 02:18 PM (

I've rearranged the frame. I'll try to finish this pic next week.

Waiting for opinions

10-23-2005, 06:18 PM (

"Hat" coloring :)

I'll be glad to se some comments here :/

10-26-2005, 03:06 PM (

And bigger update :). No bushes in the foreground now. Some new ideas. There will be also additional mushrooms one the bottom, and on the tree (on the left). Some close-ups in my next post.

10-26-2005, 03:08 PM (

And close-ups. Hope you like the changes :>

11-01-2005, 09:55 PM
very good idea of work;
the picture is better from site to site of topic
the composition of this picture is really great, it's amazing and spectacular!
i'm waitnig for your next steps
pzdr ;)

11-02-2005, 02:12 AM
are you talkin bout the pose wit the hands in the air i like that one too but i need a good light source for it.... i love the mushrooms man i if you look at the sketches there all over some of the sketch comps on my challenge page

11-02-2005, 03:08 PM (

Some bigger picture today (1100x629px - click to enlarge) :>

Left side of the picture almost done. New mushroom picker and some ideas with lightning and foliage. Generally I'm planning now to detail right-side backgrund, guy and clean picture from single pixels and dots. Any ideas for above ?

Comments are REALLY WELCOME! I need them! :D

11-02-2005, 03:29 PM
Good idea! A mushroom fantastic!)

11-02-2005, 03:59 PM
Oh my, an update was made ;) Now what I don't like is that increased glow which destroyed a bit the background foliage and bushes. On previous pic it looked way better. Good that You increased the light intensity on the lying tree but still it is too similar with the ground on the left side of it. Because of that it is hard to figure out what it is (first i thought it is somekind of a crack in a ground :P. Background and foreground foliage is sensational :) Great job mate.

11-05-2005, 08:24 AM (

Some background updates. I'm having really enough of this picture. I'll try to finish it as soon as possible.

Your comments are important to me at this time - come on! make your post-counter bigger! :D

11-08-2005, 12:20 AM
Hey c'mon, You didn't update that much. I'd even say it's really hard to find the updates here :P Don't get too lazy :D More dramatic shadows please :)

11-11-2005, 01:23 PM (

I gave up :D That's a final coloring. Final image in the next post.

and closeups:
