Firstly: Hi, Iím a long time occasional lurker of this site. So thanks to all who have submitted here over the last few years for the pleasure of seeing some amazing art and for the inspiration.
I must admit it feels like a big step to enter into something like this.
So hopefully I wont crash and burn too much on my first attempt.
For creative fun I like to take photographs. Then I do things to them. In a way a photograph is simply a stage for a story. OK, some photos are great as stories in their own right. And that is what makes them great photos I guess. But most others need embellishment, I guess I hate to see a good photo go to waste, just because it did not capture that unique moment.
Spectacular. What a great theme for making art.
I have spent the last couple of days thinking about what Iím going to do for this.
I guess I have been trying to identify the things that I find spectacular.
This is not easy because for an artist some pretty innocuous things can be pretty spectacular. So I have narrowed it down to the 3 of the biggest things.
1: Space, I mean look up at the stars and well, you just cant beat that. Also I keep thinking of all those fabulous images from the Hubble telescope and the Hugens probe doing its rounds around Saturn. They are Spectacular.
2: Cityís. Human beings build some amazing things, Look at a city at night and imagine a human being from say 3000 years ago seeing the city for the first time. Wow.
3: Technology, especially whatís happening in Nanotech, Biological sciences and Space exploration.
SO: How does one make an image out of this?
The stars and space will be my stage. It will be close to home, (earth), it will be an object that uses these fabulous technology to build a living environment.
We shall build a spaceship.
Our spaceship however is not an object of war or exploration. It will be a place for people to live. As such our builders will also be artists, building places that shine wonder into the hearts and minds of all who see and live on them.
And for the casual visitor from 2005 it will be nothing short of Spectacular.

OMG, people are looking already.
Anyway, there are more images (coming soon) that make up the Concept Sketch part.
I have gotten quite involved in the construction of the spaceship, I have some requirements:
It has to be possible (sprinkled with some imagination) with the technology coming out today.
It has to be feasable, I want people to look at this image and be inspired into making one.
It has to be functional and sustainable.
Reaserch research research, Funny actually,, The questions I have are ones like:
Why does the earth spin? and the sites that give me a digestable answer are meant for high school students (ahem) very easy to understand. :)

I think the Critical elements of the Spaceship design are getting there.

I have discovered that planets are totally amazing machines, In making this ship I needed to identify the critical elements that make up a planet, and the so Called Dynamo (planet - core) that generates our magnetosphere and protects us from that nasty old stellar radiation seems to be pretty important.
Ok, next is pulling this all together. I have been taking some star photos that I plan to use as mattes.
Also I need a human element in the image, I was thinking something along the lines of a sport in space. Yachting with solar sails perhaps, or Solar wind surfing. This will take a week or two to pull together, so In the meantine, Im curious what my peers think?..

OK, Time is running out, Im never going to make it. Well, perhaps next time. This the work up to date. Lots of work to do on the spaceship part. The Human element represents the naked truth of our inability to appreciate the spectacular right in front of us. All photograps shot on a 6 Megapixel SLR camera. (star shots were fun) Some Hubble telescope imagery is here too.
The phone box and model are from an old photograph, Some of it hand painted then re- photograped. Im going to try and put an effort this weekend, perhaps I can still make it.
