View Full Version : Can I reduce my poly's in this model?

My poly count is a little higher than I'd like it to be. Can I reduce the Poly's in this model without sacrificing much shape?

Why yes, yes you can.


You will need to adjust where the polygons split up the side of the weapon. Since you are going for lo poly/game engine stuff you will likely need them to be triangles anyway. Coming up from the trigger you should be able to ditch a lot of that subdivision going into the tube shape.

I was able to reduce my model by 400 faces after triangulation and I was even able to add more detail too it. Here is an update. Is that what you were talking about? Do you think I should continue to reduce faces in areas similar to the one I circled?

holy crap, you definitely can. Here, I outlined which polys you could merge. These are just some of the many possibilities. Everything within one of those red squares would become one poly. Baisically any edge that doesn't make curvature on the edges of it can go.

Wow man that's really helpful! I guess you didn't see my other post though. Sorry you did all that work when I had already done it :(

well the new pic still has some areas that could be reduced, such as the area you circled and the bottom back of the gun (bottom right area in the first picture, where I drew out some rectangles).

Although I am keeping this low poly it won't be used for anything except some still renders so I don't think I need to reduce it anymore or I will loose some important detail.

Do you guys agree? Am I ready to texture? I was able to remove almost 700 faces after triangulation and I added more detail at the same time, most noticably the clip.

yeah I don't really see anywhere else you could remove something...
