J.C. Coelho is entered in the "Spectacular Challenge" update: View Challenge Page (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/spectacular/view_entries.php?challenger=8032)
Latest Update: Modeling: Geno's boots
09-05-2005, 06:43 PM
First idea to mind..
A member of the next-gen glam outfit KIZZ doing some serious aerobatics.
Make up, shock pose and freak tongue on a leash.
Spandex-clad and perfect build of course?
Well so what, isn't R. Williams still doing it?
Umm.. next concept coming up :D
On second thought I'm staying with this one...
09-05-2005, 08:12 PM
I think this concept will depend a lot on the actual figures.
It would be pointless should the modelling not go well? or get successful enough.
On the other hand a futuristic rock concert is something that could be quite spectacular? Also band members can have extreme poses and even float in mid-air.
Paraphernalia and decadent dress style a must :D
Also can't the human figure be spectacular by itself, specially in extreme poses?
Just a messy sketch on bond to establish an initial idea...
ahh, damn you beat me to it :-)
This was like one of the first 3 ideas to jump in my head - not exactly the Futuristic rock band burt definitely something involing pace painted guys and guitars - like kiss or something.
I wish you all the best 0 seeing as how i had ideas along this line, i'm gonna love wathcing you bring it into full SPECTACULARITY! :-)
Sure cant say i envy you doing those human models - i pretty much battle with organic modelling.
Stick to it, this is a really good idea!
09-06-2005, 06:20 PM
Thanks Don :D
Actually I'm kind of happy with the idea myself.
I've been doing some mad fast modelling so I can picture things properly.
Also want to do a really dynamic composition :D
I'm posting the guitarist's new pose as soon as it starts coming together.
Just a new concept sketch for now, I'll do modelling posting later.
This is actually a big learning process for me :D
I will follow this thing through, I will follow this thing through...
09-06-2005, 09:14 PM
A better concept of old Geno :D
Colours not decided at all, just an idea of paraphernalia work that'll need to be done. His dragon boots might end up morphing into his legs and he might get dragon claws..
I'd like to note that I already have the low-poly pose and will start posting my modelling progress soon.
Just a suggestion ... you might want to reconsider the use of characters which display a remarkable resemblance to real/fictional characters already existing. Originality scores higher points with the judges.
09-07-2005, 07:54 AM
Thanks for the suggestion.
I actually initially wanted to "spoof" the the existing Kizz(?) band :D
On second thoughts this idea already wasn't final since the singer is female.
I haven't gone for remarkably resembling anyone with Geno(?) lol
You won't find a picture of anyone looking exactly like that.
Also, Kizz is not a final name for the band, just a developing concept.
For Geno(?) I'll borrow the idea of face paint, and mostly the big boots concept.
It might inspire some paraphernalia. I'll probably add the tongue too.
It will all however have an original twist.
Disclaimer: Any resemblance between portrayed characters and existing personalities
is purely coincidental and/or humouristic and not to be taken seriously.
09-07-2005, 01:37 PM
OK I think I finally nailed the concept.
No more disturbed attempts at presenting the idea in 2D :D
I think I finished a 3D maquette of the image ahead.
I now have the basis to start modelling away...
Also have a preliminary composition down.
Went for diagonals and more or less balanced the figures equally.
I want them to dominate the image.
So it's all about aerobatics and a live show,
the time Geno did his fly over Gwenny's head :D
Any C&C? Like, dislike?
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Actually I do realise that everything is quite ugly at this stage (lol)
Thing is it really still is just a concept.
I already have the low poly base to start modelling.
And that''s what's next, and hopefully my next post will be something
actually nice to look at :D
Until then (hopefully soon).
09-07-2005, 07:02 PM
Now I'm really confused whether this concept is OK according to the mission?
Maybe I don't understand American that well or I'm just confuzzled :argh:
Spectacular -> I went for a spectacle?
The challenge mission actually states an event that might become history?
With a story to it? Am I on the wrong track?
I went for spectacular, period :D
I'm going to ask the forum leaders about this one.
I also hope this whole thread doesn't just get deleted in the process lol.
- - - - - - - - - - - -
OK I cleared things up :D
It doesn't have to be historical, so I'm staying with this concept.
Maybe some rock bands made history by being so spectacular,
and are even now still being looked at (Kizz?)
So I'm not sure yet if this is in the past or future,
but it'll try put up as much time as I can to make it a spectacular entry :D
09-11-2005, 10:34 AM
Nice idea, you can def have fun with the lighting on this one. No idea how you 3D people get your figures sorted but looking good so far. Good luck.
09-11-2005, 07:28 PM
I'm currently trying to get somewhere new (and presentable)
with my poly modelling tool.
Still not much to show, probably this coming week.
Here's a tease on the meantime :)
09-13-2005, 01:00 AM
This is just to illustrate how I'm planning to do most of the modelling.
I'm using SubD surfaces working on the topology and using a box modelling technique.
Not necessarily a milestone but just to testify to the modelling progress.
I'm currently working on the first face.
I want to post the finished face next and then on to the whole figure.
Also keeping record of the process so I can show the whole progress.
09-13-2005, 02:28 AM
What`s Ur software for modeling ?
09-13-2005, 05:09 PM
Here's my current WIP of Geno's head :D
There's no actual texturing yet, just some sort of preview.
Hi there, I've been using the Silo modeller since version 1.2.
I've also worked on clay, plaster and more contemporary media.
I really think Silo can take me through the modelling milestones.
I wanted to say I'm not trying to offend anyone with this image.
My initial aim is rather to try bring some humour in, and some cartoony exagerations.
We'll see how and if that is going to work out.
Also I think the main challenge for me is to start AND finish an image.
It'll have to go through the entire cg workflow,
and this can also be the great reward of the challenge for me.
It'll also be a wonderful learning process.
09-15-2005, 03:11 AM
This is to illustrate the face modelling of the first figure.
I'll add some final tweaks and a little more geometry and post the final wires in more detail.
09-15-2005, 05:50 PM
Nice modeling, the head looks really good.
09-15-2005, 07:51 PM
Yes it's taking a while to post the finished head.
I'm actually not lazy and not particularly slow, I don't think.
Progress above is only a days work.
Its just that I'm living through a lot of turmoil right now :argh:
But yes, I'll be putting some hours in soon.
All my modelling will be done quickly, all my modelling will be done quickly...
09-15-2005, 08:26 PM
cool progress . But I think the lips shoul be better .It`s not so nice as my point .
Spin99, looking good! I like the poses and so far the modeling is going fast. I'm looking forward to seeing this one finished!
Um abrašo da terrinha para a Africa do Sul, bom Challenge!
09-16-2005, 08:37 PM
More views of the first face.
He got his cap and some placeholders for future hair.
I might add more detail later, might even paint it since I'm planning to use normal maps.
09-16-2005, 08:40 PM
Thanks. I'm actually happy with the lips for now.
Thank you. I'll be trying to get there.
09-19-2005, 04:39 AM
Here's some screenshots of the completed base model for Geno's hand.
I've really been working with topology on this one.
Knuckles may seem a bit unusual but I'll need them later when posing comes.
There's approximately 1100 polys on this one. I'm done being neurotic with detail, and on to some torso modelling :)
09-21-2005, 03:57 AM
Here's a screenshot of the current wip state.
Really enjoying the anatomy studies :)
09-21-2005, 08:51 AM
I actually worked a little further on the hand and thought
also that I could present it better.
I've changed the pose to be a little more natural for mapping.
I think knuckles are also beginning to make sense.
The proper subdivision level was captured as well.
I don't think I can delete the previous entry?
So this is the finished hand, before the final posing that is :)
09-21-2005, 08:19 PM
OK this is becoming a bit nuts but here's the new hand.
This really is the last version for now :)
I hope it's OK to post wips as milestones, just can't seem to avoid it at this stage.
I reworked the topology and modelled the knuckles more.
Also looked at skeletal structure of the hand.
I think I'm happy that it's hopefully beginning to look more natural(?)
I'll concentrate on the rest of the anatomy now :)
09-22-2005, 03:03 AM
Overall it looks pretty good but it could maybe use a couple viens, the knuckle on the thumb is a bit pointy, and the wrinkles on the 2nd and 3rd knuckles of the fingers look fake. They need to be smaller and greater in number. Outside of that, it is looking very good! Keep up the good work!
09-22-2005, 04:44 AM
New wip shot (updated) :)
Yes I've been battling with the knuckles and little hand things :argh:
(That's probably why I've been spamming the entries forum)
Currently thinking of maybe painting the veins later, maybe even using normal maps.
Thanks for the constructive crit :D
09-22-2005, 05:57 PM
Nice work on the hands, hands are a real bugger to model. Everything is coming along nicely. Something doesnt feel quite right in the proportions in that last render. Maybe the body is a tad too big or the head too small, and the legs a bit short, but that could be perspective? Judging by how you worked the hands I bet you will get it all looking good.
Great updates, cheers.
09-22-2005, 06:57 PM
09-22-2005, 07:22 PM
Thanks for the crit :)
Yes the proportions have changed recently.
His head was too big, knees too low, legs too short and hands too far (haha)
I'm using poly-by-poly at this stage, and only starting to stitch him together.
It's still very wip, but I'll update sometime soon :argh:
I'm coming to wish you good luck on your thread :)
09-24-2005, 02:30 AM
Blocked his back out.
No need for more detail, it wont even be on show :P
Actually he never even got ears because his mane..
I don't think there's a lot more anatomy work.
09-24-2005, 09:51 AM
An hopefully better render of the neutral posed hand.
A few more tweaks, after it got integrated into the body.
I won't bother you with more hands for a while now, promise.
I actually don't think I'm hand obsessed...
But then a specialist might think different :)
Any case, another hand.
09-24-2005, 10:40 AM
More current wip :p
09-26-2005, 02:52 AM
hey, very strong modelling man! keep up the great work, looking great!this never fitted better by word: keep on rocking! :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
09-26-2005, 04:33 AM
Thanks SaCha :)
You RAWKS too.
Well my update is a little late, but there's one coming soon.
09-26-2005, 11:48 AM
I've finished Geno's anatomy modelling,
so I thought I'd post some entries.
This is the modelling progress, somewhat embarassing,
but I thought I'd post anyway.
Props are coming next, so he can become a finished model.
He'll be wearing boots so I left his leg below the knee out.
His hand also got somewhat tweaked,
but I'll show later after mapping and posing.
I'm really getting used to the SubD media, and never
had so much trouble doing a hand.
Also this just so happens to my biggest effort so far
at modelling a full figure :)
09-26-2005, 11:50 AM
I think Geno is really based on my kiddy drawings of spider-man,
wish I could explain :)
Any case here's some anatomy views coupled with test renders.
I finally managed to render from the working pane without distorting the results (oops!)
I haven't started mapping at all yet,
it's just plain materials applied to the model.
Mapping will be an actual new experience for me.
09-26-2005, 11:53 AM
Here's some wires for you.
I spent last weekend with them :)
Hopefully my anatomy studies translated into the polys.
I think I'm really taking my modeller for a workout.
Geno's around 10000 polys by now.
09-27-2005, 12:43 AM
Yes I think my test renders are looking really AWFUL :(
Actually I think I'll keep those to myself from now on ('till mapping)
And somehow the rendered face in the mid of second entry looks baaad..
But if you compare that face to the actual orange ones you should be able to see
it's not such a bad face.
Any case I'm off today and back soon with some full rocker gear :buttrock:
And then it's time for Gwenny.
I can then start enjoying this :D
Imagine staring at Geno's butt for a whole couple days.
A naked guy wearing nothing but a pair of boots.
09-27-2005, 05:14 AM
I think that for now is not the color important... more important now is the model it self... and I have to say that we can see a great modeling here ;)
Good luck at texturing
09-27-2005, 09:00 AM
Here's a proper test render.
I've since noticed a funny ripple on his pects that I've managed to fix.
This is just to test that I should have no problems
getting quality renders with Geno's model.
09-27-2005, 09:06 AM
Hello Spin99, your modeling skills are great man, you're doing a very good job. Good luck.
09-27-2005, 05:13 PM
Yes I have to start texturing sometime.
I know most people would have started by now,
but the thing is I actually planned an unusual workflow for this.
I have to finish up with Geno and do the other model.
Then I'll start the mapping and texturing.
So it might be a while still.
09-28-2005, 04:52 PM
Well Geno the flying axe man got his boots (at long last!)
I think he's going on hold now, time to start modelling another figure.
He'll get the rest of his paraphernalia later.
I'm starting Gwenny the girl singer.
If you're surprised there's no textures yet,
it's because I chose a funny workflow.
I don't want to run the risk of texturing for nothing,
and will concentrate on it when most of the modelling is done.
That's to minimize switching back and forth between applications
09-29-2005, 11:05 PM
Hahah, those boots are killing me! Classic. Those damn figures are pesky to model, but it looks like you are making good progress.
09-30-2005, 05:31 PM
Yep very pesky lol :)
Well they are making most of it up for me so...
I'll update sometime still too wip.
09-30-2005, 09:45 PM
As soon as my 'puter boots I should be right back in the challenge :)
Hard Disk (OK)
-- Updated --
This is getting exciting :D
Why do I keep opening these e-mails I don't know.
I think I've opened something similar to "code red" twice now.
Once today even LOL
Also I just figured what was funny about my 'puter.
Well I'm still here *very evil laugh*
Microsoft please forget whatever I said in the past:
I LOVE YOU.
:buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
10-03-2005, 06:39 AM
Oh, oh, hardware problems? Good luck with this and of course also good luck with your concept:thumbsup: . I'm quite curious what you will make of it, it seems you are on a good way to a very unique scene. I'm watching...:)
10-12-2005, 06:00 PM
Thanks Sabrina :arteest: :arteest: :arteest:
Umm actually this is becoming preety complicated right now
On the one hand I'm moving elsewhere in Africa and I don't have net access just yet.
And then my disk went down with a crash, and I'm trying to get it back now (OOPS?)
Yeh I did have some backups any case.
So much for loving MICROSOFT so quickly.
-- Update --
I got my disk back again :D
This is getting really puzzling.
Any case I'll be back, as soon as I iron things out again.
Didn't Arnie say that :wise:
Spin99, good and fast progress on Gene's body! I like the boots very much, they are so glam!
I too prefer texturing only when modeling is done, so you're not alone!
Bom trabalho e melhoras pro computador!
10-13-2005, 06:01 PM
My 'puter is baaaack (?!)
I hope it's here to stay...
Any case I'm moving house and back to work hopefully by next weekend.
I'm going to be preety busy at work during the week as well.
See if it'll all work out (cross fingers)
Now living right on the tropic, with azure warm water, where people
laze away on island beaches sipping on coconuts.
You got to feel sorry for me (?) ;)
Like I said, those sunny beaches make it hard to get any work done! We're expecting more updates! Get to work right now! :applause:
Brincando, aproveita a praia! Fica bem!
