Hi Wil! Thanks for stopping by my thread... c'mon get drawing... go on go on, you know you want to.. :)

09-11-2005, 06:38 PM (

well finnaly managed to get something done.

maybe going for something not grand like end of the world or big disaster or whatever but something like weel this pic.. a spiders reflection in a cats eye... the spider simingly unaware of the huge threat.... obviously just a concept and not end thing..will think more on things.... any suggestions are most welcome. cheers!!

09-11-2005, 06:42 PM
hehe nice concept, but in the reflection, wudn't u see underneath the spider,it looks more like a duplicate.

09-11-2005, 06:47 PM
yeah i thought someone was bound to point that out... just duplicated it as a place holder so u get the idea.... and surprise surprise you are the first to reply... never let me down :bounce: :applause: :argh: :D

09-11-2005, 07:39 PM
man that's scary, freaky, and gives me gussbumps,
love it, just don't know if it fits the subject
good luck man :wip:

09-11-2005, 07:41 PM
reminds me of aeon flux

09-11-2005, 10:28 PM
Hi Wil,

Great concept sketch and definitely a stand out idea. I tend to lean more toward these types of concepts for illustrations than the average/typical design. This is definitely a plus in my book and I think it will make for an awesome image. Keep up the good work! - J

09-12-2005, 12:11 AM
It's really cool looking, but aren't cat's eyes more like slits(couldn't think of a better word)
in the eye?

09-12-2005, 12:19 AM
nice start, mate. love ur idea.good luck.

09-12-2005, 01:57 AM
wow... exlent idea... simply but fantastic!!!:scream:

09-12-2005, 07:18 AM
NOOB!- thanks man.. that pic is great....
Mecha Hate Chimp - thanks. Yeah i am trying to go for something different. just trying to rack my brain..
Mavrick71 - the eyes were not tiny slits on the cat i was referencing... i think it changes lie our eyes do depending on light and focus now read this A F U o i j t f c . . .
xric7 - appreciate it.. your stuff is great
Ducklator- just like me- simple but fantastic

More to come soon!

09-12-2005, 11:22 AM
great concept! a very inovative idea! i like it alot!

09-12-2005, 11:26 AM
eeek this concept made me shiver, and yet it is awesome and original

09-13-2005, 01:58 AM
yup, the idea is definately unique and is standing out. can't wait to see more progress bro

09-13-2005, 12:31 PM
Wil .. nice to see u here my friend .. I like your sketch but the idea seems strange for me ..
anyway good luck this time :)

09-13-2005, 04:56 PM
ho-ly crap.

that actually took my breath away when i looked at that! looking at something so simple as this in comparison to the grand epic of things people seem to be creating... its truely awesome that you can get such a gasping reaction to an image this simple. this freaks me out but its amazing! nice.

09-14-2005, 01:42 AM
Good Luck Wil!

09-14-2005, 04:06 PM
I would be scared if a spider got that close to my eye. Nice coloring!:bounce:

09-14-2005, 04:46 PM
Man this is freaky!! nice thinking:)

09-14-2005, 10:24 PM (

this is a robot that was made as an experiment in artificial intellegents. it would have no skills and would learn from the outside world. however human society was wiped out by a major epidemic and the robot which was never switched on was left for hundreds of years... untill somehow it booted up and it's first experience is something like what you see in the concept here.

what you think?

09-15-2005, 12:01 AM
man cool concept, how you gonna show it?
I'm thinking nice close up, could work,
really like that idea, cheers

09-15-2005, 12:07 AM
i like the idea, but i think this is really hard to express. maybe the robot should be more human like, so you can make a wider range of facial expressions.

curious how you will approach this goal  will keep watching

09-15-2005, 01:08 AM
I really like the robot. it seem to be amazed by the dragonfly. i look forward to see the complition of your drawing! congrat!

good luck!

09-15-2005, 08:01 AM
very nice ur robot concept.cheers.

09-15-2005, 12:32 PM
calisto - thanks..will be trying to devlop this sort of thing more

nebezial- dont be too frightened.. thanks

Arc80 - wow thanks man.. wil be developing it more

abourabe - sorry to confuse! keep watching

naludai- wow thanks for that... I am honoured!

Gord MacDonald - i hate that saying.... a pet peev ... good luck!! but thanks...

pushav - then don't look behind you buddy! thanks

Donsam - thanks man

Korline - yes closeer i think would work like my first concept.. watch this space

Llynna -hmm i do not se why it would be hard to express.. i thibnk with the sorroundings and the insect flying by will give that sence of awakening... the robot will probably not be having a facial expression yet.... but thanks for your cmments.

cyberarts - thats the idea mate.. thanks!

xric7 - much appresciated!

09-15-2005, 12:56 PM
aww so cute! i love it!:)

09-15-2005, 08:48 PM
that's a cool robot and the idea is very simple and effective enough, but i'm still voting for the first one
Hey, how bout putting the spider and the dragonfly into a death match? hehehe, just thinking out loud.

09-18-2005, 04:39 PM
Hi W!l,

I actually think a mixture of both would be nice. Instead of the cat, maybe have the spider sliding down its thread with the robot as the background. The nice is you could make the robot's surfcae reflective and still pull off what you were trying to do in the initial sketch. Just an idea. Keep those sketches coming! - J

09-18-2005, 08:21 PM
i agree with the robot-spider (reflection combo) .. nice to see you again wil  good luck

09-18-2005, 09:59 PM
awe Wil! very very cute concept, so sweet, so innocent! wonderful! keep it up, love the peacefull and sweet approach you started here, keep it up!

09-18-2005, 10:48 PM
just stop to see if there is anything new :wip:

09-24-2005, 03:13 PM
Hay will welcome back!! ;)

09-24-2005, 03:21 PM
your concept is good, however, it will be hard to show everyone how long he has been sitting there without some really good rusting and cobwebs, etc... or if he's in the water, water creatures and plants growing all over him too. Dragonflies are elegant aren't they? Keep going, this idea has potential.

09-24-2005, 05:26 PM (

this is a similiar idea to the first robot one but this robot has amost been destroyed and is hanging from the building where they built all the robots... in tokyo... taht is soppposed to be a flag its haging from... it wakes up and finds itself hanging upside down as a bird flys by...

09-24-2005, 05:43 PM
calisto- just like you!
Arc80- that whole insect deaathmatch might not be a bad idea.. cheers.
Mecha Hate Chimp- good idea mate... still working it all out
OrO- cheers mate
the1st_angel - thanks man.. trying to go for peacful/ subtle image.. thanks for support
Neozoom - good to see u again to
birdybear- yes, i have been thinking about that.. will have to see what i can do

09-24-2005, 05:57 PM
cool concept and ur latest update.

09-24-2005, 07:35 PM (

just sketching . .

09-24-2005, 09:00 PM
hi W!L! good luck with the challenge and I like the second idea with the robot and a dragonfly.. very emotional, but it needs more surrounding. keep up the good work buddy!

09-30-2005, 11:17 PM
I really like the robot that is hanging from the flag... very cool. I'd love to see more development on that one... i almost want to see one of the robots hands lifting slowly towards the birds... in an aloof wondermaent

10-02-2005, 07:36 AM
xric7 - thanks.. glad to have your support.
NinjaASSN - yeah thanks mate... still tyring to rac my brain to get it better.. or similiar idea.

birdybear - yes i do prefer that one.. the sketch sucks but the idea i like and i might do something with that... or just something high up in the sky.. i have been skething alot and am leaning toward doign somthign very high up. flying though the sky.. trying to get high emotion in the pic..

So anyway.. i am thinking of scraping the robot idea (maybe) and starting developing something that ahs been on my ind for a while.. i have been thinking of doing this graphic novel for a while and so i thought i should so something toward that fr this challneg to finnaly get something done toward it.

update soon.. . hopefully today!

10-02-2005, 08:23 AM
havent seen anythyning for a while, :wip:

10-03-2005, 08:32 PM
nice sketches..:) the last one looks great.... I'll wait to see more...

10-04-2005, 09:57 AM
la da dee da dum da dee

10-04-2005, 03:27 PM
Nice mood! There is a "sensibility" thing on the air... Very good!

10-04-2005, 06:15 PM
Ducklator - THthanks mate
DoInferno - cheers ..thats what i am going for..

QUESTION! - can anyone tell me why my images are always blurry and lose like 75% of the quality when i upload it to this site? I am using photshop save for web option and optimzing to 150kb file size at about 600 by 800 pixels..... Just other peoples do not seem so blurry and crap.... It is really annoying me1

10-04-2005, 06:45 PM
Hey Wil! theis looks really really beautyfull. i love the composition and hearing you plan this with a destroyed city brings some gives me nice visions between bladerunner and ff visions. this definately will be a great piece, keep up the great work mate!

10-04-2005, 06:49 PM
great concept so far but are you gonna change the angle..i don't know make it more dynamic..ever try to leave the images as a normal jpg without optimisation..still the las image will be recived in tiff format you know and there won't be problems there..good luck man!

10-04-2005, 07:22 PM
Looking nice bro  Definately liking the composition and the way the mood is developing. Can't wait to see if flesh out and see the design of the destroyed city :D

keep it up mate

10-05-2005, 11:06 AM
the1st_angel - that is some nice feedback... thanks for the encouragement angel.

OrO - Yes oro i will be trying lots of differnet angles and designs etc etc before i start on the main piece... hanks for the advice.

Arc80 - cheers arc... I will try to makeit great

10-05-2005, 12:39 PM
 good luck

10-05-2005, 07:23 PM
and thx for the very good advice

10-06-2005, 07:06 AM
Hi! I like your idea! The top view always makes impession on me. And the blue sun!!! It's cool! :) Good luck!

10-06-2005, 09:43 AM (

my girlfriend decided to stick miss congeneality 2 last night.. so out came my mac and did a few sketchs for the challege... one of which was the composition sketch. not exactly what i am goig for background wise... the robot will not be on a cliff. most probaby a destroyed city. lotsv more to be added but this gets the feeling across.... comments welcome.

10-06-2005, 06:35 PM
 Great concepts W!L....

I really love your characters and look forward to seeing how they develop.

I prefer the angle of the first memory concept as there's a feeling of depth - also the closeness of the character makes it more intimate. Though then again, I suppose the solitary figure on the cliff adds a sense of isolation, so either could work. Maybe looking down slightly on the figure might work well and allow you to play with depth???

Really looking good....looking forward to the next installment

10-08-2005, 06:12 PM
Yo personally, I thinks that you should go with this image. It is your best one yet.

10-12-2005, 08:01 PM (

havent had any time to do anything compositionwise.. but here is a quick sketch of robo design... trying to develop the look i want.. not there yet...

10-12-2005, 09:40 PM
Cool design, Wil! It kind of looks like this robot has dreadlocks. I like that - i designed a robot like that once, too: it's the illo i was working on before this challenge started! (sigh, maybe some day I'll get around to finishing that.) Anyhow, I like the design of the body too, it hints at a lot of functionality. Good luck with it!

10-12-2005, 09:53 PM
Hi Wil, I love robots, so bring 'em on! I think the one with the robot sitting on the top of a cliff with the bird would make a charming pic, especially if you show two extremes - the dirty, smog-filled city contrasting with the charming and pure moment happening above.

One of your previous concepts reminded me a bit of Rust Boy (, there's a scene in that where Rust Boy sees a grasshopper for the first time ... aaaaaaw.

I'll be watching to see where you go with this!

10-13-2005, 11:28 AM
MrFreeman - thnak sfor the input. still ahveto mess around wth composistion. by no means fininshed. i think it will be alot closer in the final o0ne as i am going for a more intimate feeling so thanks.

pushav - thanks mate, will do!

walrus - thanks. yeah. trying to make it look as unique and cool, but also kinda cute as i possibly can.. more developments to come ove rthe next few days. - show me your robot mate.

Speaky - yeah see what you mean. never really done robots before, usually fantasy stuff. but enjoying it!

10-14-2005, 02:24 AM
nice going wil~i like the robot design,a female bot it is?~would love to see some details on it~keep it coming man~

10-15-2005, 08:59 PM
:bounce: Hi W!L.... I love your characters and how they are developing....(haven't I said this already??)

the characters might be robots, but there's a real sense of emotion in there which is tricky to portray and it's definitely proving successful, even in your quick sketches.

Love the concept and hoping to see more developments soon. Still plenty of time for the masterpiece to evolve...keep going :applause:

10-17-2005, 09:10 PM
great sketch man! but i wanna see the full composition before i give my point of view...the rest is good luck and have fun!

10-18-2005, 01:47 AM
Looking Sweet. Like the concept.

10-18-2005, 05:31 AM
I really like you robot concept 2. The little guy hanging from the flag has some really cool dynamics to it...the tension, balance, interest of the bird, and how it got up there. I also like its design alot. I'm no one to listen to, but i think you should revisit this piece, maybe develope it more.

11-01-2005, 12:17 AM
the second robot is cute but i prefer the nice profile view of your original concept, somehow its just perfect and ready to rock :)

11-01-2005, 06:52 AM
sh@ke- thanks.. and no the robot is assexual

MrFreeman- thnaks for your support! really appreciate

OrO- thnank u!

cuppacam - appreciated mate

KITTNLITTER- yeah i still quite like that and am far from decided on a composition

the1st_angel- eyah angel-the composition there certainly works... but i ust think it is a bit flat..... thanks for the input

SOOOOOOooooo anyway.. I might NOT be finishing this comp! ahhh! I am involved in a project with my best mate at the mo and it is taking all my time.... a graphic novel that he is writing and i am illustrting.... I will be posting lots of character designs on the 2d finsihed works section of cgtalk for input so you can see i am not lying! But anyway i am going to try to finish the competition becasue i do like it and i like my concept so far.. so good luck to everyone and hopefully, maybe , update soon?

11-01-2005, 08:02 PM
Ah, so that's why there hasn't been an update. All good mate. Just hope you finish this piece and goodluck on the graphic novel :buttrock: will be looking forward to seeing some designs on the characters :bounce:

cheers mate

11-01-2005, 10:11 PM
oh..boooooo..  i was looking forward to seing your image finished....good luck with your novel and all your other projects...cheeres :buttrock:

11-09-2005, 06:59 PM (

Contrary to what i previously said i am now going to try to finish this competition.

So I give you my line art... though about composition in my wee brain for a while and did rough sketches but this was done in 30 mins all in photoshop using my faithful wacom.... very very rough.. but i am detailing in painting.. this is just a guidline. Dont know if you can see very well... but the robot is amongst a derilect destroyed city. a spider is hanging down from one of the ruined structures and he is straing at it in amazement after powering up for the very first time.

it will become clearer with colour..

11-10-2005, 02:27 AM
lets see some colors WIL:scream:,gosh,we have less than 30 days

11-10-2005, 01:13 PM
yesss...go on man! finish the challange ...make us droolll   i wanna seee it take shape!! good luck :buttrock:

11-10-2005, 08:38 PM
 i really like the concept W!L and hope you can get time to finish this.

I loved the robot images and it would be really something to see you put all the elements together. It's amazing what you can do in three weeks. I like the robot spider idea and will be good to see in colour...

Good luck and look forward to the next update :applause:

11-10-2005, 09:20 PM (

just some base colour

11-10-2005, 10:15 PM
Glad to hear you're finishing the entry mate. Base colour is looking good so far. You definately have a very consistant pallete. Keep it up bro

11-12-2005, 12:35 PM
Nice loose painterly start! Are you gong to have enough time? Go, go, go!

11-12-2005, 01:02 PM (

decided that the bacgorund was a bit uninspired and needed a lot more stuff in than just buildings so i have added a tram and a car as well as a few other things that will make themselves clearer as i progress.. any crits very welcome. I have not touched robot since initial painting ... just working on background.....

11-12-2005, 01:05 PM
Arc80- thanks mate
Jose Pardo - dont worry- i shall finish.. enjoying it alot.... dont usually do bacground really..

11-12-2005, 01:24 PM
cool...didn't have enough time to look at the other pages but from what i see dog...your gnna do great...keep it up man.

11-12-2005, 01:25 PM

thanks for checking out my work

can't wait to see your update

11-12-2005, 08:53 PM (

more work on background... car, tram etc.... looking very dull at present so will have to sort that out.... think i will put the robot in next and the spider.

11-12-2005, 08:55 PM
very cool

keep up the great work

11-16-2005, 10:15 PM
more detail..more..more..more:arteest: ...keep going my friend...good luck:beer:

11-20-2005, 12:34 PM (

ERM... not sure how much more i have actually done... but i have spent fr to many hours doing it... feel jaded with it... but tell me what you think... been working on background.

11-20-2005, 05:09 PM
just dropping by to see what is going on this thread my friend, Hurry you've got 15 days, good luxk to ya!;)

11-20-2005, 05:25 PM
wee your back:applause: ..looks good..but paint faster there is not much time left:argh: ..pls hurrry..keeping my crits for when you do the robot too :wip: good luck..go wil go go

11-23-2005, 09:55 PM
hehe, yea, paint faster :D easy to say I know.. well, I suggest u to put some harder color into this piece, not so bright that r present now. Make strong brush strokes with define shapes, not so blury and I think ur progress will be much quicker. Play a bit with curves to make colors as they r now a bit stronger and go on from there. good luck buddy!
